In new remarks for this week's baseball, history, and politics reissue, we consider the heat dome hovering over half the country and wonder what it means for baseball. Then we revisit the offensively potent but frequently discarded outfielder Roy Cullenbine and take a visit to interwar Washington for a mostly non-baseball story of political corruption. The Infinite Inning is a journey to the past to understand the present using baseball as our time machine. Baseball, America's brighter mirror, often reflects, anticipates, and even mocks the stories we tell ourselves about our world today. Baseball Prospectus's Steven Goldman discusses the game's present, past, and future with forays outside the foul lines to the culture at large. Expect history, politics, stats, and frequent Casey Stengel quotations. Along the way, we'll try to solve the puzzle that is the Infinite Inning: How do you find the joy in life when you can't get anybody out?
Tim Cates gets you ready before the Dodgers start a 3-game series against the Rockies. Dave Roberts talks about Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman's struggles at the plate. DV catches up with Michael Conforto.

Joe explains why he's in favor of keeping this move. Looking at the College World Series, why did we see so many headlines around the managers of these teams? When it is a thousand degrees outside, Elly gets sick on the field and then homers, and we just stay in the air conditioning and curse climate change. Geaux Tigers! Congrats to LSU on their College World Series win, fair and square, unlike the suspicious victory in the Jello Shot Challenge for charity (we're looking at you, Paul and Livy). The Dodgers just have so much going on trying to overcome the bad press about staying mum as the city burns. They are donating a million dollars, but for what exactly? Did they prevent ICE from entering the ballpark grounds? Nezza disregards the directive and sings the anthem in Spanish. And still no other players speak out. Terry Francona continues to charm, and Harry Caray's grandson reminds us to keep the L in “flag.” Manny inspires Andy to greatness and a new nickname. Woody keeps topping out at 451' homers. Hosts Alex Kirshner, Ben Lindbergh, and Lindsay Gibbs talk about the NBA Finals and the Oklahoma City Thunder's victory over the Indiana Pacers – the comeback kings of the season. They discuss how the Pacers' unsatisfying underdog ending and Tyrese Haliburton's on-court injury made this one of the more bittersweet Finals of recent years. Then, the panel dissects the sale of the Los Angeles Lakers to a group of investors led by the Dodgers' owner Mark Walter, and the team's record-breaking $10 billion valuation, and what it means for the presence of big, big money in sports team ownership. Finally they discuss the Edmonton Oilers getting iced out of Games 5 and 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals by the dominant Florida Panthers. They ask why Edmonton can't get it together, and whether they might just be getting a little long in the tooth. On the bonus episode available exclusively for Slate Plus members, the panel discusses another, less-positive team acquisition story: Mat Ishbia's purchase of the Phoenix Suns back in 2022. The Atlanta Braves took a significant step toward turning their season around by sweeping the New York Mets only to stumble in a series loss to the Miami Marlins over the weekend and receive crushing injury news on ace Chris Sale. Grant McAuley discusses the week that was and the pivotal week ahead, Sale's injury prognosis, and where the rotation goes from here.
