Send us a textWelcome back to the conclusion of my interview with retired Las Vegas Metro Lieutenant Randy Sutton. Most cops, including myself, have a recurring nightmare of being in a gunfight and their firearm malfunctioning or their rounds hitting the bad guy with no effect. My guest on today's show lived that nightmare, going toe to toe with a gunman less than a few feet away from him, with his pistol malfunctioning, and once he cleared his weapon, the rounds hitting, but having no effect. All the while the bad guy was firing his gun at him so closely he could see the fire coming out the barrel. Lt. Sutton joined the Princeton Police Department at 19 years of age, becoming one of the youngest Police Officers in the state. He served the town for ten years before joining the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, where he served for almost 24 years, retiring at the rank of lieutenant. During his service, he distinguished himself as one of the highest decorated officers in department history, having earned multiple Lifesaving awards, Exemplary Service awards, Community service,e and a Medal for Valor. The good lieutenant is also a public speaker, prolific author, podcaster, and the founder of Wounded Blue whose mission is to improve the lives of injured and disabled law enforcement officers by providing support, education, assistance and legislative advocacy to our true American heroes. Please enjoy this often raw and very real conversation with Lieutenant Randy Sutton. In today's episode we discuss:.· Saving a baby who was shot in a drive-by shooting during a gang initiation.· Randy's career progression in the Vegas Metro PD. · Randy's opinion of the Vegas Metro PD now compared to back when he was on the job.· The biggest changes in the department in the last twenty years.· How many times was he told by tourists that prostitution is legal in Vegas?· What if anything is being done about prostitution in Las Vegas?· How is order kept in a town that is flooded with drunk/high tourists who are vulnerable to criminality?· How Randy dealt with an unexpected end to his law enforcement career.· What is The Wounded Blue? Las Vegas Hotel Fire: One of the Deadliest Hotel Fires in America. On the fateful morning of November 21, 1980, one of the deadliest hotel fires in U.S. history erupted at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. The blaze claimed 85 lives, injured nearly 700 people, and forever altered fire safety protocols nationwide. This harrowing event, which unfolded in the glittering heart of Las Vegas, remains a chilling reminder of the devastating consequences of safety oversights. A Las Vegas Police Officer on scene tells the story. Check out and follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms. The fire began around 7:07 a.m. in a restaurant on the casino’s first floor. A refrigerated pastry display case in The Deli malfunctioned, sparking a blaze that quickly spread through the casino. Within minutes, thick black smoke engulfed the building, rising through elevator shafts and stairwells into the 26-story hotel tower. Of the approximately 5,000 guests and staff inside the MGM Grand that morning, many were trapped in their rooms, succumbing to smoke inhalation. You can listen to the interview as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast website, also available on platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and most major podcast outlets. Mark Rusin, a former Las Vegas Metro Police officer and retired ATF agent, vividly recalls the chaos. “It was like hell on earth,” Rusin shared during the interview on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast. As one of the officers on the scene, Rusin and his squad were tasked with the grim duty of recovering bodies from the smoke-filled hotel. Look for supporting stories about this in platforms like Medium, Newsbreak and Blogspot. Police and fire crews responded swiftly, with the Clark County Fire Department receiving the first call at 7:17 a.m. Despite their rapid deployment, the fire’s intensity and the building’s design flaws made rescue efforts perilous. Metro Police helicopters airlifted officers to the rooftop, where they descended into the hotel to locate victims. Las Vegas Hotel Fire: One of the Deadliest Hotel Fires in America. It is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. “The hallways were pitch black,” Rusin recounted. “We carried gurneys, flashlights, and axes, navigating through the eerie silence broken only by the sounds of distant alarms and our own footsteps.” His team found victims in stairwells and corridors, many having succumbed while desperately trying to escape. Among the 85 fatalities, most deaths were caused by smoke inhalation rather than direct burns. Survivors and responders described harrowing scenes: guests breaking windows to escape, others clinging to balconies awaiting rescue. One victim, described by Rusin, died shielding his wife from the smoke in a final act of love. Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms. The trauma of that day left an indelible mark on first responders. For Rusin, it led to years of reflection and healing, culminating in his book, Metro: Sin City Chronicles, which details his experiences as a Las Vegas officer. Las Vegas Hotel Fire: One of the Deadliest Hotel Fires in America. Platforms like the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, Apple Podcasts and Spotify make these stories more accessible. The MGM Grand fire stands as Nevada’s deadliest disaster and the third-deadliest hotel fire in U.S. history, following the Winecoff Hotel fire in Atlanta (1946) and the Dupont Plaza Hotel fire in Puerto Rico (1986). Its impact, however, extended far beyond the immediate tragedy. The incident exposed critical safety flaws, including the absence of sprinklers in the casino and the use of flammable materials in the building’s construction. Keep informed by following the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, MeWe, Pinterest, Newsbreak, Medium and other social media outlets. In the aftermath, Nevada implemented sweeping reforms to fire safety codes. These included mandatory sprinkler systems in high-rise buildings, fire-resistant construction materials, and comprehensive evacuation plans. Nationwide, the tragedy became a case study for fire safety and disaster preparedness. Las Vegas Hotel Fire: One of the Deadliest Hotel Fires in America. Decades later, the MGM Grand fire’s story continues to resonate, amplified by social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Survivors, first responders, and historians share their accounts, ensuring the lessons learned are not forgotten. Podcasts on Apple, Spotify, and Newsbreak delve into the tragedy’s details, while platforms like Medium provide in-depth analyses of its lasting impact. Stay up to date by following the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, MeWe, Pinterest, Newsbreak, Medium and other social media platforms. Today, the site of the MGM Grand is home to Horseshoe Las Vegas, a vibrant symbol of the city’s resilience. Yet, the memory of that devastating morning in 1980 endures, a somber reminder of the lives lost and the importance of vigilance in safety standards. For those who lived through it, like Mark Rusin, the fire remains a defining moment—a testament to the courage of first responders and the enduring need for preparedness in the face of catastrophe. In just two days, we will mark the 6th anniversary of the Las Vegas shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival. Firing from the 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay, Stephen Paddock fired more than 1,000 rounds in 11 minutes. After killing 60 people and injuring nearly 500 people, Paddock turned the gun on himself. It is the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. The motive? No one knows. That's right, the FBI is stumped. As well as the Las Vegas Metro Police. Last year, the FBI released documents in response to a FOIA request. Nothing in there exposes a motive either. It does give a little insight into Paddock's mindset, possibly. He is described as a “prolific gambler.” He would gamble anywhere from 6-8 hours a day playing video poker. Sometimes he played up to 18 hours a day. According to interviews conducted by the FBI of Paddock's friends and acquaintances, we know that Paddock described him as a “strange,” introverted, and someone who never made eye contact. Paddock only wanted to talk about gambling. Another gambler claims that Paddock was “very upset” that those days of pampering high rollers were over. The FBI's report from 2019 suggests Paddock might have sought notoriety and perhaps wanted to follow in the footsteps of this criminal father. The FBI also notes Paddock's physical and mental health was declining, as well as his money. But just because the FBI doesn't know what the motive doesn't mean they're worried to find out. In fact, when the FOIA request docs were released, the FBI and Las Vegas Metro Police cautioned that “Speculating on a motive causes more harm to the hundreds of people who were victims that night.” ***Thanks for listening to Overnight Opinions, a recurring news show on topics the mainstream media isn't telling you. Well known Elvis tribute artist Dana Mackay and his beauty queen girlfriend Mary Huffman were murdered inside their Las Vegas mansion.Dana headlined at the Dunes casino before moving to the Imperial Palace where he was the first Elvis to star in 'Legends in Concert'. He was a father and looking to leave the spotlight and start a landscaping business, supplying high dollar palm trees to the city of Las Vegas. Mary was a mother and former Mrs. Nevada. On October 30, 1993, Las Vegas Metro Police were asked to do a welfare check on Mackay after family and friends had not heard from the couple in days. When police arrived to the mansion named 'mini Graceland', the door was open, groceries were all over the floor and Dana and Mary were dead in a pool of blood.Police say the two were murdered, shot at close range multiple times. At first, Metro police thought the couple may have walked in on a 'burglary in process', however friends say nothing was taken from the home.
