Back when I was an elementary teacher, annual planning was a huge and important part of my classroom curriculum each year. A strong plan for the year meant I could easily focus on the things I needed to get ready for each week, and would keep me on task to achieve and teach everything I wanted to cover. It's funny then that the first few years of focussing on my full-time art career that i shied away from annual planning. I think part of it was that I was unusual about where I was headed. However, once I sat down and got into annual planing for my maker business magical things started to happen. I started to get so much more done and felt a lot better about the day-to-day running of my business. ‘Making a Life' starts with Melanie sharing her journey of coming to a cross roads in her career and finds herself determined to write a book (she was previously a book editor at Abrams) of her own “investigating and celebrating the role making by hand can play in making a good life.” At the time I came across this book I had been doing a lot of research about the value that we place on handmade items as a society and how this has changed over time. I knew this book would be something significant. And I certainly wasn't disappointed. In this episode I dig into the big question of balancing motherhood with running your own creative business with the oh-so-talented Amy Whetton of Wild Canary Studio. Amy is mother to two energy-filled twins (aged six) and lives with her husband in the suburbs of Toronto (they live in a really lovely small-ish house that is SO filled with character, I love when she shares peeks of their home on her Instagram feed!)Amy's days are filled with her family: her funny dog, kids covering her house in dominos, and her husband currently working from home, all the while with her running her wonderful creative business focussing on watercolour paintings, prints, and stationary. In this episode we talk about just this: is there such a thing as balance when it comes to these things? What does that even look like? Amy shares how things work for her, how she started her business, the roadblocks she has faced, and her dreams for the future. In this episode we cover:+ How to work in a small space…and make it work.+ The benefits of working for yourself.+ Taking the chance to try something new when things just aren't working. For Makers:Be sure to check out this fun quiz that will tell you what type of maker you are and what steps you can take next to build the business of your dreams. In perhaps the most perfectly timed episode ever - I am thrilled to welcome my friend Bonnie Christine to the show to discuss one of my favourite topics - getting things done! This time of year many of us are deep into reflection after a year comes to a close plus looking ahead and annual planning for the year to come. In this episode we chat all about how she took her big scary goal - becoming a surface pattern designer - and broke it up into bite-sized pieces to make it more achievable. We also dig into one of Bonnie’s favourite topics - productivity. We discuss annual planning, Bonnie’s new Flourish planner, and she shares tricks and tips that she uses to run her business more efficiently. Leave a review on tunes to win a copy of Bonnie’s beautiful planner. Simply take a screenshot of the review and send it to me by email at Julieanne@heirloomisland.com or as a DM on Instagram @heirloomisland. Have you ever admired someones work from afar and then finally gotten up the nerve to say hi? Well, that’s what I did with Kody. She is a crazy-talented watercolour artist and I have admired her work on Instagram for a few years now. When I started this podcast I knew that I finally had a reason to reach out to her! Kody’s work is beautiful. Like, down-right gorgeous. Delicate colour plus tiny details that really draw you in and make you feel all those good feelings. She paints portraits, does lots of custom orders, is currently working on illustrating a book, and has the most adorable set of printable paper dolls (like seriously cute!). I was curious to ask her ALL the questions about how she makes custom orders work for her business.

Friends, meet Charisse. Charisse and I met years ago at an ETSY Team Captains Summit in Toronto. We instantly bonded over being moms, makers, and our strong desire to go and hide in our hotel rooms away from crowds (we went for coffee instead in a quiet cafe and talked for hours - it was lovely).Charisse runs Pixel Paper Hearts; a successful humour-filled stationary business. Her work is inspired by ‘real life’ and features her own lettering and artwork (and humour!) She wholesales her work in 44 stores across Canada. In this episode we chat about why working from home is so great (*normally* so many hours alone!), lessons learned from moving into wholesale (thank-you Emily Arbour), and how to keep the orders rolling in. We dig into why it’s important to just start (even if you don’t feel ‘ready!’), and how wholesale can really help grow your business.

I found Gia Graham one day when I was scrolling through Instagram. Her artwork and use of colour caught my eye. I found out more about her and her work and her wonderful and oh-so-fun ‘Palette Play’ project. I have always thought about doing an everyday project but to be honest, I felt scared of the idea. I didn’t want to start - for risk of not finishing. It turns out, I kind of fell into doing a daily art project, and it was amazing. As an artist and independent business owner, I spend a great deal of my time alone. I work in my studio while my children are at school and my husband is at work in the city. I like the quiet. It suits me. There is a lot of room to think and to relax when I am working on creative projects. When Covid-19 changed things this Spring our whole family was at home. My husband working away with the door closed on Zoom meetings and the boys (8 + 9) doing homeschool and me trying to carry on working with them. Working creatively; drawing, developing ideas, and painting for long stretches of time was a struggle. I soon determined that there was no way that I could carry on with the schedule I had been running on that things needed to change. So I put many larger projects on hold, focussed on the kids and scheduled out a solid quiet hour each day to do some creative work that would make me feel good. And that is how my daily art project began. Quite by chance.I painted a small watercolour painting the exact size of a vintage polaroid picture for 39 days leading up to my 39th birthday. The medium and size stayed the same but the subject of each painting was totally open. Some days I thought about the small things that were making me happy that day, a peek of green sprouting in the garden or thinking about popping into my favourite shop. This project and the hour I spent each day helped me feel positive during a trying time, and really gave me a chance to slow down and focus on the art of making and how good that feels. In this episode we cover:+ How to make your own project unique+ The benefits of taking part in a daily art project+ How to cheat (and why it’s ok)Subscribe / Leave a ReviewHave you subscribed to my podcast? When starting out selling work as a maker or artist the usual route is to sell your work on your own at a market or online shop. Next you might be considering looking to have your work for sale in stores. This is normally done either by selling things on consignment or having the shop buy from you at wholesale (Episode 1 covers wholesaling your work).Today I welcome my friend Bridget Saprong to the podcast. Bridget is the owner, manager, and curator of The Mutchmor, a beautiful gallery and cafe on Manitoulin Island. The gallery is filled with interesting artwork and handmade goods by local artists and beautiful items sourced from abroad. I have sold my artwork though The Mutchmor for many years and thought Bridget would be the perfect person to chat with about this topic because - she does this very well.Subscribe / Leave a ReviewHave you subscribed to my podcast?
