In this episode of Content Amplified, host Ben Ard sits down with Frank Pasquine, Marketing Director at DoubleVerify and author of the newly released novel The Prince of New York. Frank has spent nearly 20 years in marketing across ad tech, entertainment, and agencies, but publishing his own book forced him to see content strategy from an entirely new angle.Frank shares the story of how he went from studying economics at Fordham to screenwriting at NYU, nearly beat Gossip Girl to the punch with a pilot at William Morris, and eventually built a full marketing career while holding onto that creative spark. Now he's applying everything he's learned in B2B to promote his debut novel as a one-person team with a personal savings budget. The conversation gets into the reality of marketing your own product versus marketing someone else's, the surprising fragmentation of platforms when you're the one spending every dollar, and why in-person activations combined with digital amplification have been his most effective strategy on both sides. What you'll learn in this episode:What changes when the product you're marketing is your ownHow a screenwriting background shapes a content marketing careerWhy in-person activation plus digital amplification is the highest-performing content playThe 100-day playbook Frank recommends before launching any side projectHow to approach TikTok, Instagram, and BookTok as a first-time authorWhy freedom to experiment is the biggest advantage solo creators have over corporate teamsFind The Prince of New York on Amazon or search for Frank Pasquine. Eric Zimmer launched The One You Feed podcast in 2014 with no audience, no name recognition, and a podcast name that took explaining. Twelve years, 850+ episodes, and 500 million downloads later, he released his first book — How a Little Becomes a Lot — a title that is, in every way, the story of his life. In this conversation, we talk about how incremental progress actually works, why you can't see it happening in real time, and why that's actually fine. We also go deep on the business reality of podcasting in 2026 — the early mover advantage is gone, ad CPMs are harder to sustain, and Eric is actively pivoting from reaching many people loosely to serving fewer people more deeply. Then we spend a lot of time in the weeds of the book publishing process: the six-month proposal, the 18 months of writing in half-day increments, the uncomfortable dance between your vision and what an agent and publisher think will sell, and the emotional work of promotion — watching who shows up and who doesn't, and applying his own frameworks to keep from spiraling. This one got personal. I'm in month 11 of my own book proposal, and Eric helped me see the other side of a process that has genuinely been shaking my confidence. EPISODE 500 - Dominick Domasky - A.I. and Authors, Publishing A Book in 2025, Celebrating A MilestoneAI's Role in Content CreationDavid and Dominick discussed the role of AI in content creation, particularly in writing and podcasting. They expressed concerns about the reliance on AI tools, which they believe can lead to the production of "beige" content that lacks personal stories and deep connections. They emphasized the importance of human creativity and the value of personal experiences in writing. They also discussed the potential pitfalls of using AI to generate content, such as the lack of authenticity and the inability to capture the essence of a personal story. They concluded that while AI can be a useful tool, it should not replace the creative mind of an author.Consistency, Authenticity, and Networking SuccessDominick emphasized the importance of consistency and authenticity in achieving success, using the example of a friend who appeared on Oprah. He stressed that success requires putting in the same effort that led to success elsewhere and being consistent in sharing one's message. He also highlighted the importance of networking and reaching out to the right audience, using the example of a fantasy book author who found more success at a comic-con than at a book event. David agreed with these points, noting that the author's ability to connect with people at the comic-con was key to their success.Persistence and Continuous ImprovementDominick and David discussed the importance of persistence and continuous improvement in their respective endeavors. Dominick shared his experiences with various events and how he learned from them, emphasizing the value of networking and adapting to different situations. David then shared a quote from Theodore Roosevelt, "Do what you can with what you have where you are," and how it relates to authors. They both agreed on the importance of sharing one's journey, both the successes and struggles, to inspire and connect with others. David expressed his appreciation for Dominick's willingness to share his experiences and journey, which he believes helps others feel more comfortable in their own struggles.Support, Motivation, and Podcast GrowthIn the meeting, David and Dominick discussed the importance of reaching out to others for support and motivation. David expressed his gratitude towards Dominick for his consistent support and guidance. They also discussed the upcoming 500th episode of their podcast and the need for more authors to be featured. David encouraged Dominick to send him new authors who have never been on a podcast for a great first experience. They also touched on the topic of sharing content and the benefits of evergreen content. If you're a writer, you've probably experienced this frustrating thing: all kinds of people feel free to give you advice. Usually, it's not because they're experts, or bestselling authors, or even avid readers. It's because their one friend ffrom high school is a successful author, and maybe you should talk to them to get help. Or because they're no expert, but they've heard you should write every day to succeed. Do you write every day? No? Yikes. (Neither does your host, writing coach Karena Akhavein, Ph.D.) Or because they care about you, and it's really hard, maybe impossible, to succeed as a writer. Or because you asked them their opinion on the rough draft of your book, and they don't read much, but they really don't like that genre so maybe you should rewrite it to sound more like Stephen King? Writing advice is everywhere. And more often than not, though advice comes from a good place and has some golden nuggets troughout, much writing advice can actually be harmful to writers in the long run and hold them back from their writing goals and their dream of being a successful published author. Tune into this uplifting episode of the How to be an Author podcast to dissect which wriitng advice is helpful, which can be harmful, and which ideas and concepts can actually move the needle in your writing career.

Today we have an exciting topic to delve into. In this episode, we will be exploring the intriguing question of how authors should treat the costs associated with their publishers when it comes to their taxes. Are these expenses considered straightforward deductions, or is there more to it? Join me as we navigate this gray area and uncover the implications for authors and aspiring authors alike. We'll discuss different scenarios based on the intention behind publishing the book, the costs involved, and whether treating them as expenses or assets is more advantageous. But remember, this is just for educational purposes. To get specific advice, it's important to consult with your CPA or tax preparer. So grab your headphones and get ready for an enlightening discussion. Let's dive in! What you'll hear in this episode: [01:40] Questions on author expenses and tax deductions. [04:19] Marketing activities planned, prepare for accounting discussion. [07:32] Considering book inventory and marketing expenses When deciding whether to keep inventory of a book and sell it, there are a few considerations to make. If your intention is to use the book as marketing collateral, such as giving it away at events or conferences, it can be viewed as a marketing expense, similar to business cards. However, if you plan to sell the book beyond the first year, it may be considered an asset rather than an expense, as books don't expire after a year. In summary, the decision of whether to keep inventory and sell the book depends on your marketing strategy and long-term goals for the publication. [09:42] Consider alternative options and discuss with accountant.
