Whether you're dreaming of entrepreneurship or just want something that's yours, this episode will inspire you to take the next right step—messy or not.
If you're a woman business owner over 40, join the Dear FoundHer... Forum to find support, advice, resources and mentorship—JUST FOR YOU. It's all inside, without the gatekeeping and without the overwhelm. Julie Wainwright knows what it's like to be underestimated, and to prove people wrong. She built The RealReal into a billion-dollar luxury consignment business, then watched from the sidelines as a board she no longer trusted forced her out. But that's only part of the story. In this episode, Julie sits down with Lindsay to talk about what it really means to lead. From the ashes of Pets.com to the early days of The RealReal, Julie explains how she saw an opening in the e-commerce space and moved fast, testing, iterating, and winning customers city by city. She didn't wait for investor buy-in. She mailed postcards. She knocked on doors. She made it work. What convinced early customers to trust her with their Chanel and Prada? What does it take to scale a business from $10 million to $500 million when most investors don't even understand your category? And what do you do when the company you built is no longer yours?Julie shares how strategic partnerships, like an early collaboration with Neiman Marcus, helped put The RealReal on the map. She reflects on the power of in-person experiences, like pop-up stores, and why human connection can drive business in a way digital never fully replaces. Now leading her second venture, Ahara, Julie is focused on precision nutrition and on helping other entrepreneurs find their footing. Her new book, Time to Get Real, is both a memoir and a playbook for anyone building something that feels personal. If you've ever doubted yourself, or felt like others have doubted you more, Julie's story will remind you what's possible when you trust your vision and keep going.Episode Breakdown:00:00 Introduction to Julie Wainwright and The RealReal05:04 From Pets.com to The RealReal: Julie's Founder Story11:29 Building Trust in Luxury Consignment17:43 Raising Capital and Finding the Right Investors22:37 Scaling E-Commerce Through Strategic Partnerships28:14 How Resale Impacts Luxury Markets29:17 Leadership Changes and Boardroom Challenges32:58 Lessons from Entrepreneurship and Gender Dynamics36:48 Starting Over: New Ventures and Growth39:24 Why Nutrition Became Julie's Next Mission43:34 Advice for Aspiring EntrepreneursConnect with Julie Wainwright:http://www.instagram.com/realrealjulieGet on the Marketing Made Simple Waitlist: https://lindsaypinchuk.myflodesk.com/waitlistDear FoundHer Forum: https://www.dearfoundher.com/dear-foundher-forumDon't forget to follow Lindsay on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lindsaypinchukFollow Dear FoundHer on Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/dearfoundherPodcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm Hosted on Acast. On today's show, we're chatting with Yuri Carter, an Atlanta-based vintage and archival fashion connoisseur. After many years working in the luxury consignment business where she learned tricks of the trade, she established Yuri's Market in 2017, as a premier destination for curated vintage and high-quality fashion. Yuri's Market has evolved into a comprehensive marketplace, and a physical archival and vintage shop in Atlanta, further solidifying Yuri's Market's presence in the vintage fashion industry. This one is for the vintage designer enthusiasts – I loved Yuri's stories and I know you will, too – so, let's dive right into it! DISCUSSED IN THE EPISODE: [2:52] Yuri grew up in Chicago with a love of eBay and consignment shops. [6:07] She learned a lot about the vintage industry working for various vintage and luxury consignment shops. [13:24] Eventually she decided to apply that learning to her own vintage business. [16:52] After a brief hiatus, she approached Yuri's Market through a new marketing lens. [21:50] What's trending with Yuri's customers this season: furs and leather, python and cheetah print, Pucci, and Fendi. [28:23] Yuri's personal style and favorite pieces. How do you make extra money in a low-risk way? And one method I keep coming back to is the idea of starting a consignment business. So you're selling other people's stuff and just taking a percentage. They get paid, you get paid, and you've got no upfront inventory risk like you'd have with a traditional physical product business. Sarah McAffry of Statemint Consignment earned over $10,000 from her first consignment event and has continued to grow from there. She has been crushing it in this space for the last 10 years, and it has now expanded to 23 locations across the country. Meri is moving to Parowan but first she gives Kody the symbolic middle finger by giving the furniture they picked out together from Colleen's Consignment to her sister Rebecca and her husband (Kody's best friend) Nathan. Meri has never looked happier, and Kody's mood is much lighter as well, until Sonny and Cher's divorce comes up again. Christine and David have been dating for somewhere around 6 weeks to 2 months. They are not engaged, yet, but nevertheless are looking at wedding venues in Moab. They drag three of their kids along and subject them to French kissing and canoodling the whole day. (Ep2/2). With Gadaffi's first shipment of weapons to the IRA now landed at Shannon airport and dispersed around to hiding places, in this second and final part of this documentary series, we hear how the IRA trained on these weapons. We then travel north, to Northern Ireland where on Tuesday, November 28th 1972, the IRA carried out ten rocket attacks injuring, maiming and killing. As we complete this story, we meet with the son of the first victim to be killed by these rockets, RUC Constable Robert Keys, a 55yr old father of six who was just finishing up his night shift at Belleek RUC station in Co. Fermanagh. Narrated by Liam O'Brien and Conor Keane. Produced by Liam O'Brien. Readings were by David Nelligan and Joe Garry – with special thanks to Colin Barker, production engineer in RTÉ Limerick. (2024) Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

First Consignment: 01 – AirliftIn the summer of 1972, Libya's Colonel Gaddafi made an approach to the Provisional IRA with an offer of weapons. This was to become the first modern weaponry the IRA got access to. The first shipment of arms landed in Ireland in late 1972, a shipment that few, even to this day, are aware of. More than fifty years after all of this took place we finally tell a story that has never been told before. In this first part of a two part documentary, we follow these weapons from their point of manufacture in Russia, through to their arrival on Irish soil. (Part 1 of 2) Narrated by Liam O'Brien and Conor Keane. Produced by Liam O'Brien. (2024) Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

From hats in the hall closet…to bats in the belfry, we can help you save money on the basics.Today, we'll offer you a few common-sense strategies for saving money on three basic necessities: clothing, utilities, and home maintenance.Saving on ClothingWhen it comes to clothing, it's easy to get tempted by sales or the latest trends. This is especially true if you have kids, especially teenagers, with rapidly changing sizes and opinions on what's “cool.” But keeping your family's wardrobe sharp doesn't have to break the bank.Shop Thrift Stores: You don't have to buy new. Thrift stores offer deals on current styles and wardrobe basics. This is a great way to save, especially if you have kids. Teenagers might resist, but give them a budget and challenge them to find something they like. It's a fun way for them to learn the value of money and creativity.Consignment Stores: Consider shopping at consignment stores, where you can find stylish clothing at a fraction of the cost. Plus, when you're done with your gently used items, you can trade them in for cash or discounts, adding money back into your clothing budget.Re-think Your Wardrobe: Instead of filling your closet with items you'll only wear once or twice, focus on versatile, high-quality basics. A good pair of slacks or a neutral skirt can serve multiple purposes, from work to church or an evening out. Spend on these core items and use accessories and thrift store finds to add variety.Cutting Down on Utility BillsUtilities are another area where costs can quickly add up, but there are several ways to save.Energy-Efficient Appliances: Invest in energy-efficient appliances when it's time to replace your old ones. While it may cost more upfront, these appliances will save you money in the long run. You can also find deals on “scratch and dent” models, which are new but have minor cosmetic flaws.LED Lighting: Switch to LED bulbs; although they're more expensive initially, they last longer and use less energy, reducing your electricity bills over time.Utility Rebates: Check with your utility company for rebates on energy-efficient systems like electric hybrid water heaters or smart thermostats. These rebates can help offset the initial costs of upgrading your home's energy systems.Simple Habits: To further reduce your energy consumption, unplug appliances, turn off electronics, and adjust your thermostat when you're not at home.Smart Home MaintenanceRegular maintenance is crucial to avoid costly repairs if you own a home. Here are some tips to keep your home in good shape:HVAC Maintenance: Have your heating and air conditioning system checked annually to ensure it's running efficiently, especially before the peak seasons of summer and winter.Seal Air Leaks: Check the caulking around windows, doors, and light fixtures annually. Replace weather stripping if necessary, and consider adding insulation if your home feels too warm in summer or too cold in winter. Again, utility companies often offer rebates for insulation upgrades.Roof and Attic Checks: Remember your attic. If unused, ensure it's not becoming a home for critters. Rodents and other animals can cause significant damage, including chewing on electrical wires, which is a fire hazard.By taking simple, proactive steps in clothing, utilities, and home maintenance, you can manage your money more effectively and keep your expenses under control. These practical tips are designed to help you save more while still maintaining a comfortable and stylish lifestyle. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I'm in my 70s, and my spouse and I have been married for over two years. I've saved a significant amount of money initially kept in a lockbox. After selling my condo, I put that money into a couple of CDs, as they offered the best rates. These CDs will earn me over $4,000 a year in interest. I also have a few thousand dollars more that I need help with. I'm concerned that depositing this large cash amount in the bank might raise money laundering suspicions with the government. My dad passed away over a year ago, and my mom is trying to get Social Security benefits. However, neither of them has the required 40 credits. Can they combine their credits to qualify? My question concerns an income property that I have. Is it better to keep it during my retirement or sell it? My main concern is the capital gains tax I'll incur when I sell it since I've owned it for over 20 years, and it's depreciated.Do you consider classic cars a viable option for possibly a small part of a retirement portfolio?Resources Mentioned:Wise Women Managing Money: Expert Advice on Debt, Wealth, Budgeting, and More by Miriam Neff and Valerie Neff Hogan, JD.
