Petar Janjic is a Minnesota drummer who has a fascinating and inspiring musical journey that you need to learn more about. Growing up in Serbia, Petar was always driven by the drums. Inspired by his drumming father and the rich Serbian music scene, Petar was constantly motivated to play and learn as much as possible about the instrument. He was influenced early on by the greats in music like James Brown and Prince, along with a blend of The Steve Miller Band just to name a few. At a young age he decided he needed to be in America to be near the music that he loved. Already an accomplished drummer, Petar moved to America to attend The McNally Smith School of Music on a full scholarship. He eventually became an instructor, and quickly became an in-demand local player. He also started working with some of the very musicians that inspired him back in Serbia. His enthusiasm for life and drumming are balanced as precisely as his ability to play. In this episode of [episode of what?], Paul “The Rög” Rogne and Petar scratch the surface of his story and learn more about his approach to playing in a series of videos that demonstrate his various techniques. We discuss how the D’Addario company is responding to COVID-19, how this pandemic is impacting their business, the retail instrument business, Evans turning drumhead material into face shields, and artists. John provides us insight on how his corporation is addressing the unparalleled government action to fight COVID-19. John is focused on keeping D’Addario strong and loyal to its employees, artists, and customers. John address this as follows: “With our employees, one of the most gut-wrenching decisions I ever had to make was to furlough all of our factory workers and the majority of our office staff a couple weeks ago. That was tough but, at the end of the day though I’m resigned to the fact that my objective is to make sure this company can come out of this in a strong way so that we can provide opportunities back to the people who were furloughed. Looking at this longer term, it’s in the better interest for everybody to let things simmer and wait it out a bit so we can come back out of this strong.” D’Addario is also working with its artists who have been impacted by the “Stay In Place” mandates as well. D’Addario has been helping to provide online lessons and more. In a statement in support of his artists, John goes onto say: “As an organization we’re really sensitive to the artist community because this is obviously not only going to cripple our business but obviously their interests and business. We’re already dreaming up ways we can help them. I don’t have all the answers right now, but it’s definitely a top of mind thing for us to address and I can assure you that we are going to do that.” We even get to talk a little gear as we discuss Evans’ new patented UV-cured coating process for their UV1 and UV2 drumheads. On this episode of the Minnesota Drummer Podcast, I had the opportunity to talk with Ollie Manley, who has been entrenched in and enhanced the Minnesota drumming scene since the 1960s. Playing up to 300 gigs a year since the 60s, Ollie made a name for himself as a quiet drummer with a light touch, which has constantly kept him working. Now in his 80s, he is still playing out with over 50 performances a year and offers advice to aspiring working drummers. Ollie paints a historical image of the hopping local music scene from the 1960s through the 1980s. We chat about his time at Dahlgren’s/Floyd Thompson’s Drum Shop where he rebuilt and repaired equipment for touring drummers like Louie Bellson, Art Blakey, John Bonham, and Jeff Porcaro. While at the shop, he made Medicine drums for different tribes and mastered the processes of rolling calf skin. And he even explains to us how to repair a Vistalite shell. We briefly talk about the history of the Martin Fleet Foot Pedal, which eventually became the DW 5000, and how he would convert pedals to chain-drive before being the norm. There is so much in this episode that there isn’t enough room to put it all in this summary, so please take a listen to this fascinating episode. I feel privileged to know Ollie and I’m thrilled to have you learn a bit about his drumming history.

On this episode of the Minnesota Drummer Podcast I am featuring a standout player from our scene that a couple of years ago landing his dream gig of playing for the legendary industrial metal band Ministry. His name is Derek S. Abrams. I became familiar with Derek in 2006 when our bands at the time; his being Skywind did a show together. Derek played masterfully and leveled the place with an exhilarating drum solo that showed that his skills were much more advanced than to being exclusively a metal drummer. Derek played in many local bands including Gingerjake and Black Flood Diesel before landing the gig with Ministry for their Spring 2018 tour after Joey Jordison had to bow out. Ministry was founded in 1981 by Al Jourgensen who was a trailblazer of Industrial metal. Ministry became commercially popular in 1992 with the hit’s; Grammy nominated N.W.O. and Jesus Built My Hotrod. Derek currently endorses Yamaha drums, Paiste cymbals, Evan’s Heads, Vader Sticks, and the Attack Rack. In this interview we talk about his history, independent rehearsal, his drum set up and why this set up is balanced with his self-proclaimed laziness, including why Derek angles the drums away from him to make drumming more efficient, technique, Ministry, and much more. On October 8th Minnesota Drummer posted an update story titled “Minnesota Drummer Derek S. Abrams embarks with Ministry on the final leg of Slayers retirement tour” located here: https://minnesotadrummer.com/?p=559 where he dicusses some additional piece to his arsenal not covered in this interview.
