Thanks to her father, the Belgrade-raised Popovic was introduced to the blues at an early age, through his wide-ranging record collection and jam sessions hosted at the Popovic home. Born on May 13, 1976, Popovic took up guitar when she was a teenager and formed her first band, Hush, in 1995. Within a year, with the collapse of Communism in Eastern Europe, she was playing blues festivals in Greece and Hungary and working as an opening act for American blues masters, including Junior Wells.Popovic recorded her debut album with Hush in 1999, when she also moved to the Netherlands to study jazz guitar and world and pop music at the Conservatory of Music. She had the chance to see blues guitarist Bernard Allison at a club in Germany. He asked her to come on-stage and jam at the end of the show. While Allison invited Popovic to join him on a tour, she had to get back to the Jazz Academy in Holland. Allison asked for a copy of Popovic's record with Hush, and he sent it on to executives at Ruf Records in Germany, who were impressed with Popovic's powerful guitar playing and singing. Ruf contacted her to be part of their Jimi Hendrix tribute compilation, and then signed her to a recording deal of her own.Several months after this, she was on her way to Memphis to record Hush! The album was well received by blues radio programmers and the non-blues purist segments of the American, European, and Canadian blues festival circuits. In the spring of 2001, she performed at the Memphis in May Festival alongside Bob Dylan, the Black Crowes, and Ike Turner. Within five years of leaving Yugoslavia, Popovic, now in her late twenties, had the chance to perform at many of the major European blues festivals, including Peer, Bishopstock, and Notodden. Along the way she's sat in with the likes of Allison, Michael Hill, and Kenny Neal.Popovic has two albums out on the New Jersey-based Ruf Records America label, Hush!, released in 2000, and Comfort to the Soul, her 2003 release. Jim Gaines and David Z., who have worked with other blues-rockers, including Stevie Ray Vaughan, Santana, and Jonny Lang, had roles in recording and mixing both albums. Five of Popovic's sparkling originals shine on Comfort to the Soul, including her...

Premier blues guitarist Andy Watts has earned a reputation as Israel’s Ambassador of the Blues. Over the years he has brought some of the world’s leading blues artists to Israel to perform and record with his 9-piece rockin’ blues band, Andy Watts & Blues on Fire, known as the biggest R&B show in Israel. Andy’s recent guests have included Joe Louis Walker, Kenny Neal, Lucky Peterson, Rick Estrin, Bernard Allison, Eliza Neals and others. Andy developed such great musical chemistry with Kenny Neal that Kenny wound up co-producing Andy’s new album, SUPERGROOVE, for his new label, BOOGA Music, in cooperation with the VizzTone label group and BratGirlmedia label management. SUPERGROOVE features Watts’ signature guitar work and his great band – including bass, drums, keyboards, trumpet, trombone, saxophones and occasional guest harmonica. For vocalists, the album features special guests Joe Louis Walker and Eliza Neals, plus explosive soul singer Roy Young, Danny Shoshan and Gadi Altman.Half of the songs are Watts originals, while the others dig into classics by Freddie King and longtime influence Peter Green, plus compositions by Walker, Coastin’ Hank, and others. International Blues Festival Champion Kevin Burt joins Tom The Suit Forst on Chasing the Blues 2, Episode 31. For more than 25 years Kevin Burt has been electrifying audiences throughout the Midwest dispelling the myth that true blues has no roots in Iowa. His soul-inspired presentation is unique which consistently get him compared to a range of artists like Bill Withers and Aaron Neville, with the ability to build an audience rapport that has been compared to B.B. King. Kevin Burt has won many awards and played many festivals both solo and with his band, the Instigators. His awards include Best Entertainer in Iowa City (three times) Best Band in Iowa City (three times) Iowa Blues Challenge Champions, Named as one of the top 25 unsigned blues bands in the world by the International Blues Challenge Competition. Kevin is also recognized as one of the Midwest’s top blues heritage educators. This honor was given to him by the Governor of Iowa, Chet Culver in February of 2009. Kevin is a registered artist, and artist educator with the state of Iowa Arts Council. He has also written and published a classroom harmonica method book called “Just Play It: an introduction to blues harmonica.” His approach is simple, education through entertainment. His program has been going strong since 1994. Burt plans to continue this work as well as his community work with Children and the arts. With the support of his family and community, good things will be happening for Kevin “B.F.” Burt in 2019.In a comparably short career, Kevin Burt has shared the stage in one form or another with a who’s who in the music world.  Jassen is a seasoned bass professional that has toured the world playing his bass. Playing in bands from Dirty Looks , Bernard Allison , Jakes Blues, Ron Yarosz and The Vehicle , and even my band Smilo & The Ghost. We talk about his start in music, why he does what he does and how. Touching on life on the road , the good and bad, living abroad ,and how playing music parallels life. We end it with Jassens "the time I played Princes birthday party" story. Enjoy.

Blues guitar ace, Bernard Allison marks his return to Ruf records with “Let It Go”, another solid studio album to his already distinguished recording career. Bernard is the son of legendary blues icon, Luther Allison. Like his father, he molded his passion for blues and skills as a band leader in France. Today he is one of the top talents on the scene and leading the contemporary blues charge for the next generation of players while bearing the traditional blues torch passed down by his father.

Show # 271 – Live, Uncut & Uncensored Conversations With “Musicians You Should Know” Lisa Grissom from Tall City Blues Fest stops by to discuss the festival on July 10, 11 & 12.  Music On The Couch will be webcasting live once again and I am acting as stage Emcee for this Festival partner. Bernard Allison just released his first studio album in 6 years entitled In The Mix, which features all of Bernard's influences. Learning to play at an early age and listening to his dad's albums, put Bernard on solid ground.  He has made himself into his own man and we will explore his journey. Chefjimi comes by with the Blues411 Report and I am sure it will include updates on the new bionic knee. COUCH KID NEW MUSIC TIMES TWO First, Beth McKee brings her new album, the just released Sugarcane Revival to the Couch and we will speak with her about what has been going on in her life since she last sat with us back in June of 2011. Another Couch Kid returns when Ray Goren brings his EP Save My Soul to share.  Ray originally sat with me as part of the Generation Blues Band with Jamie “Bluesboy” Powell.  Jamie passed recently and Ray is continuing with the lessons he learned from his mentor and friend.

The response to last week's blues rock edition was so strong, I've got a follow-on this week. With some warm leftovers from last week and a few additional cuts from the library, the 197th Roadhouse is another strong blues rock edition. Omar and the Howlers, Bernard Allison, Robin Trower, Stephen Dale Petit, and Webb Wilder and the Beatnecks will propel you through 60 minutes with hardly any room to take a breath. Blues had a baby, you know, but it's pretty much grown up into the music in this edition of The Roadhouse Podcast – a full hour of great blues rock.

In the face of a 500-year flood in Iowa City, we ratchet up the defiance of Mother Nature with an hour of great blues. Songs about floods, rain, rivers, and water fill the hour, bringing a sense of determination and resolve. Cuts from Bernard Allison, Big Mama Thornton, The Holmes Brothers, Toni Lynn Washington, Kansas City Joe and Memphis Minnie allow us to stare straight into the water this week and resolve that we will not be defeated. In defiance of Mother Nature - the 174th Roadhouse Podcast. Please consider a donation to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to assist with all the natural disasters occurring around the U.S.
