It is difficult for me to characterize what Scott, Elizabeth, and myself discussed on the latest LGM podcast, better known as “the tightest 117 minutes in the history of podcasting.” Our writ was to discuss the latest Paranoid Style album, “Known Associates,” as well as to talk about Elizabeth’s contribution of liner notes to The Replacements’ Let it Be: Deluxe Edition and we did indeed discuss these things, but there were digressions. Some questions that emerged and re-emerged over the course of the pod: What is your theory of album sequencing, in terms of where you put the best song and where you put the hardest song? Is this album the Paranoid Style’s entry into the Yacht Rock genre? Does the presence of a saxophone necessarily imply Yacht Rock, or is some sort of boat reference also required? Is Van Halen Yacht Rock? Let’s phone a friend. Do you have strong feelings about the remastering of Tim? Elizabeth would like to hear from you. Are you offended by aspersions against Soul Asylum? Did Rod Stewart sell out? Is selling out even bad? How does Donald Trump feel about Kiss? What’s the deal with authenticity? What would say to Prince if he were using the urinal next to you? What would you say to Jon Langford? Would you like to hear a funny story about Keith Richards and drugs? Or one about Wussy? Did SEK go on a bender with Keith Richards? Did RFK Jr.? What will it be like the day that Sir Paul McCartney leaves us? A bunch of songs about Canadian songwriters, where Gordon Lightfoot is asked to be ranked by some metric? Is Gordon Lightfoot Yacht Rock? Is any expression of admiration for the Drive By Truckers excessive? The answer is no. Are the DBTs Yacht Rock? What is the demographic profile of an LGM podcast listener? Would we mind more of Elizabeth’s review of rock n’ roll books? Could Elizabeth be lured to Lexington for the Keeneland Spring Meet? Could this podcast have been more effectively edited for content and coherence? Possibly. Transcript is here. "I Should Be Happy" Singer/keyboardist Anne Richmond Boston showed up on the musical timeline in the late '70s when she joined the Atlanta indie rock outfit The Swimming Pool Q's. Before the goldrush of bands like R.E.M., Soul Asylum, O Positive, Big Dipper and Poi Dog Pondering signing to major labels, The Swimming Pool Q's kind of led the way, inking deals in the mid-'80s with A&M and Capitol Records. They put out five marvelous albums, including Blue Tomorrow and The Deep End, toured with Devo and The Police and garnered a reputation for being a spot-on live act, their brand of idiosyncratic pop filled with jittery rhythms, sterling sax fills, jangling guitars and sonorous vocals. Richmond Boston left the band in 1989 but roared right back with her 1990 debut solo album Big House Of Time. Filled with soaring originals like Dreaming and covers of numbers by Neil Young, John Hiatt and The Lovin' Spoonful, Big House Of Time made a huge splash at college radio. And then? Well, Richmond Boston designed album covers, worked in graphic arts, sang with The Drive By Truckers and Widespread Panic and rejoined the Q's. And that was that. But what about the rumored follow-up to Big House Of Time? Well, it was recorded and sitting on a shelf in a closet in Richmond Boston's house. Titled I Should Be Happy, her sophomore album was worth the wait. A riveting collection that's filled with meditative and melodic numbers, I Should Be Happy is contemplative and moving and finds Richmond Boston tackling the big questions with peerless harmonic grace. www.annerichmondboston.bandcamp.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenbooks.com Threads + BLUESKY + IG: @emberspodcast editor@stereoembersthepodcast.com

In Doug's annual attempt to get someone from Soul Asylum to listen to the podcast, there's a brief game centered around their song titles. Is “Gullible's Travels” a real Soul Asylum song? Only one way to find out.*Meanwhile, Alice finds that she now has three or four new old ice skating shows to watch in the future. If she can ever tear herself away from enjoying all the world's fonts.Other discussion topics may include:- Martin Mull, but not that one- Catapulting from backyard to backyard- Gardetto rye chip ice cream- What bird looks like a helicopter?- Dick Button: For when you don't have a zipper*Well, theoretically, you could just Google it, but ssshhhh.
Send us a textAnnie stops by the show to discuss music, how Loki's Folly came together, anxiety, new music and more.******‘Retribution' is a song looking at the parallels of extreme sides of emotions and how we react to difficult things,” says Annie Kuchenmeister, guitarist and singer for Loki's Folly, the Minneapolis-based indie-punk trio made up of sisters Annie (24), Nissa (19) and their brother Oskar (15). “The verses are an exploration of defensive and protective anger - wanting to hurt those who hurt you. While there's gratification and justification to seeking retribution, the chorus creates a vulnerable opposition to these harsher feelings. It's really about just not wanting to be alone forever and wanting to be cared for after being hurt.” At its core, “Retribution” channels raw emotional honesty through the band's trademark blend of kinetic guitar work, cathartic drumming, and melodic grit - a sonic space where fury meets tenderness head-on. “This song came out of a lot of feelings of frustration and anger,” Annie continues. “Dealing with those big emotions can be hard, and I really didn't want to be consumed by them. So, this song became a way to lay everything bare - the good and the bad - and explore it all honestly. The music and lyrics really came together as a unit; as the melody came about, an old lyric idea immediately clicked.”Following on the heels of their September 2025 single (“King of All Alone”),” “Retribution” continues Loki's Folly's evolution toward deeper, more introspective songwriting. This reflective thread connects “King of All Alone” and “Retribution,” both songs were produced by Ryan Smith of Soul Asylum and born from turbulent emotional spaces that transform struggle into strength. Where “King of All Alone” aches with longing and cautious optimism, “Retribution” pushes back with defiant honesty - together forming a striking one-two punch from a band unafraid to confront both the chaos and the catharsis of modern life. Formed in South Minneapolis, Loki's Folly began as a project between sisters Annie and Nissa, later joined by their younger brother Oskar on bass. Their bond - both familial and creative - gives their music a distinct urgency, weaving together themes of identity, isolation, neurodivergence, and resilience. On their debut Sisu, the band worked with legendary producers Ryan Smith (of Soul Asylum), Ed Ackerson (The Replacements, The Jayhawks), Kevin Bowe (Etta James, Jonny Lang), and John Fields (Jonas Brothers, Andrew W.K.), crafting a record that explored the complexities of adolescence and the emotional weight of finding one's voice in an uncertain world. While Sisu introduced listeners to their youthful defiance and eclectic spirit, “Retribution” feels like a step into something more introspective - a song that acknowledges the anger beneath the surface, but also the fragile hope that lingers within it. It's a fitting next chapter for a band growing up in public, unafraid to document the messy process of becoming. For more info about the band: https://lokisfolly.com/****If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comFollow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. This week Denae tells Kim about Soul Asylum's Runaway Train music video that found missing children. Sources: slate.com Did the “Runaway Train” Music Video Really Save 21 Kids? In 1993, MTV aired a music video for the song “Runaway Train” by Soul Asylum. In the video, names and photographs of real missing people were featured. In that music video, the picture of fifteen-year-old Vicky Hamilton is displayed just long enough to burn the image of the girl with the short bob haircut into your mind. When the video was made, Vicky had been missing from her family in Scotland for two years. A little while later in the video, there is another photograph of a girl, Dinah McNicol, an 18-year-old from Essex, in the UK, who had just finished her A-level exams. When the Soul Asylum video was made, Dinah had also been missing for two years. Aside from the fact that both girls went missing six months apart in the same year, and aside from the fact that they both appeared in the same music video, two other things connected these girls. They had both been murdered by the same man. And they both shared the same grave.Join Jen and Cam as we discuss the chilling case of Peter Tobin, one of the UK's most depraved serial killers. We explore how his unassuming life as a handyman masked a brutal reality, leading to the murders of Angelika Kluk, Vicky Hamilton, and Dinah McNicol.*Come join Jen and Cam in Italy 2026*We are touring Italy in 2026, and would love for you to come along! Formed in Minneapolis in the early 1980s, the group has blended punk, roots music, power pop and other influences to create its own unique sound. After a series of indie releases and two albums for A&M, the band's widespread commercial breakthrough came with Columbia Records' release of the Grave Dancer's Union album in 1992. “Black Gold” and “Somebody to Shove” were hits on Billboard's Alternative Rock chart, with the latter reaching #1. “Runaway Train” was a top-5 pop single and earned Pirner a Grammy for Best Rock Song. The follow-up album, Let Your Dim Light Shine, produced the top 20 singles “Misery” and “Just Like Anyone.” To date, Soul Asylum has released over a dozen studio albums and Pirner has released one solo album, Faces & Names, in 2002. The band's most recent record, Slowly But Shirley, was released in September of 2024.

We talk about his partnership with band co-founder Jeff Arundel, a few tunes from the record, and how he has rediscovered his love of being in a group again. Tom Ackerman talks with Curtis Francois, owner of World Wide Technology Raceway, about the 2025 Bommarito Automotive Group 500, which moves to Father's Day weekend (June 14–15). The event kicks off the post-Indy 500 oval stretch of the IndyCar season and aims to create a fun, family-friendly atmosphere. Francois shares details about the track's unique design that challenges both setup and skill, creating exciting racing with drivers like Josef Newgarden and Pato O'Ward. The weekend also features the INDY NXT developmental series and the Celebration of 66 Fest, a Route 66 Centennial partnership with Illinois, including concerts by Soul Asylum, Cracker, and Sponge.
Tom Ackerman talks with Bernie Miklasz about the Blues' 5-3 loss to the Jets in Game 1 of the playoffs. Despite a strong start, the Blues unraveled in the third period due to penalties and poor puck possession, while Connor Hellebuyck held firm facing just 17 shots. Bernie also breaks down the Cardinals' offensive struggles—scoring just 3.1 runs per game over the last 12—while the starting pitching boasts a sharp 2.42 ERA. Later, Curtis Francois joins to discuss the 2025 Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at World Wide Technology Raceway, now moved to Father's Day weekend. The race will feature a Route 66 celebration with concerts by Cracker, Soul Asylum, and Sponge, highlighting the track's unique design and family-friendly upgrades.

Upon its release in 1992, Beautiful Mess by Thelonious Monster received plenty of critical acclaim yet not the sales or media exposure to launch the band into the new alternative explosion. Lead singer Bob Forrest's deeply personal lyrics explored themes of addiction, relationships, and self-destruction, not all that different from other bands at the time, but musically the band sounds more in step with Minneapolis bands like The Replacements and Soul Asylum the late 1980s. Featuring a slew of notable names from bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Porno for Pyros, and more as his backing band, the band succeeds at bringing Forrest's stories to life even if a few lyrics choices didn't stand the test of time. In 1993, Soul Asylum's Runaway Train won the grammy for best rock song, and its wildly popular music video featured missing children, with the intent of locating them. All in all, of the 36 children featured in the U.S. versions of the video, 21 were considered found. Here's a deep dive into what that means, and rundown of those that are still missing. This week, Dave Pirner returns to the show to discuss the writing and recording of Soul Asylum's hit 1995 single "Misery." In this insightful conversation, Dave reveals the inspiration behind the song's biting critique of corporate America and the record industry. He shares how the band experimented with recording equipment during this period, enjoying creative freedom without interference from their record label, and how they worked with producer Butch Vig on the album Let Your Dim Light Shine. The discussion also touches on the success of the album, which solidified Soul Asylum's place in 90s rock, and the enduring popularity of "Misery" as a fan favorite that continues to resonate in live performances.
