Formed in Minneapolis in the early 1980s, the group has blended punk, roots music, power pop and other influences to create its own unique sound. After a series of indie releases and two albums for A&M, the band's widespread commercial breakthrough came with Columbia Records' release of the Grave Dancer's Union album in 1992. “Black Gold” and “Somebody to Shove” were hits on Billboard's Alternative Rock chart, with the latter reaching #1. “Runaway Train” was a top-5 pop single and earned Pirner a Grammy for Best Rock Song. The follow-up album, Let Your Dim Light Shine, produced the top 20 singles “Misery” and “Just Like Anyone.” To date, Soul Asylum has released over a dozen studio albums and Pirner has released one solo album, Faces & Names, in 2002. The band's most recent record, Slowly But Shirley, was released in September of 2024.
PipemanRadio Interviews Super Group Ultrabomb at Punk Rock Bowling XXV in Downtown Las Vegas.Ultrabomb's legacy is already cemented, thanks to the unmatched pedigree of its members. On bass is Greg Norton, a founding member of the trailblazing Hüsker Dü, whose influence helped shape the sound of American punk rock and inspired generations of artists including The Pixies, Green Day, and Foo Fighters. Behind the drums is Derek O'Brien, best known for his work with Social Distortion, who has been a driving force in the genre through his contributions to seminal bands like Agent Orange, Adolescents, and DI.And now, Ultrabomb adds a powerful new dimension with the addition of Ryan Smith (guitar). A veteran musician, songwriter, and producer, Smith is known for his work with Soul Asylum. His dynamic presence and deep roots in punk and indie rock make him a natural fit for Ultrabomb's raw and high-voltage sound.Ultrabomb played a one-off show during Punk Rock Bowling, performing at the Punk Rock Saves Lives event at Hogs and Heifers on Saturday, May 24.In addition, fans had a rare opportunity to connect with punk rock history: Greg Norton offered personalized tours of the Punk Rock Museum in Las Vegas on May 22, 23, and 24.Subscribe to The Adventures of Pipeman at https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-adventures-of-pipeman--941822/support Take some zany and serious journeys with The Pipeman aka Dean K. If nothing else, music is healing. Look no further than my guest on this episode—Dan Murphy, former lead guitarist from the 80s-90s cowpunk band Soul Asylum and the alt.country super group Golden Smog. The Minneapolis-based Murphy, who thought he had quit the music biz for good roughly 13 years ago, is in the midst of an unexpected musical renaissance. In this episode, Dan and I discuss his band the Scarlet Goodbye's (https://thescarletgoodbye.com/) second album El Camino Adios. We talk about his partnership with band co-founder Jeff Arundel, a few tunes from the record, and how he has rediscovered his love of being in a group again. Go grab a beer or two and dig into this one!
Making a Scene Presents an Interview with The Scarlet GoodbyeThe Scarlet Goodbye is the brainchild of two seasoned Minnesota musicians: Dan Murphy and Jeff Arundel. When their paths crossed unexpectedly, it sparked a collaboration that neither saw coming—but both clearly needed. Dan, best known for his foundational work with alt-rock legends Soul Asylum and the supergroup Golden Smog, brought his gritty, guitar-driven edge. Jeff, a mellow, introspective singer-songwriter and producer, added warmth and nuance. Together, they found creative common ground in an attic studio in St. Paul, Minnesota. http://www.makingascene.org

Tom Ackerman talks with Curtis Francois, owner of World Wide Technology Raceway, about the 2025 Bommarito Automotive Group 500, which moves to Father's Day weekend (June 14–15). The event kicks off the post-Indy 500 oval stretch of the IndyCar season and aims to create a fun, family-friendly atmosphere. Francois shares details about the track's unique design that challenges both setup and skill, creating exciting racing with drivers like Josef Newgarden and Pato O'Ward. The weekend also features the INDY NXT developmental series and the Celebration of 66 Fest, a Route 66 Centennial partnership with Illinois, including concerts by Soul Asylum, Cracker, and Sponge.
Tom Ackerman talks with Bernie Miklasz about the Blues' 5-3 loss to the Jets in Game 1 of the playoffs. Despite a strong start, the Blues unraveled in the third period due to penalties and poor puck possession, while Connor Hellebuyck held firm facing just 17 shots. Bernie also breaks down the Cardinals' offensive struggles—scoring just 3.1 runs per game over the last 12—while the starting pitching boasts a sharp 2.42 ERA. Later, Curtis Francois joins to discuss the 2025 Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at World Wide Technology Raceway, now moved to Father's Day weekend. The race will feature a Route 66 celebration with concerts by Cracker, Soul Asylum, and Sponge, highlighting the track's unique design and family-friendly upgrades.

Upon its release in 1992, Beautiful Mess by Thelonious Monster received plenty of critical acclaim yet not the sales or media exposure to launch the band into the new alternative explosion. Lead singer Bob Forrest's deeply personal lyrics explored themes of addiction, relationships, and self-destruction, not all that different from other bands at the time, but musically the band sounds more in step with Minneapolis bands like The Replacements and Soul Asylum the late 1980s. Featuring a slew of notable names from bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Porno for Pyros, and more as his backing band, the band succeeds at bringing Forrest's stories to life even if a few lyrics choices didn't stand the test of time. Dave Pirner is my guest on this episode of That's How I Remember It. I grew up a massive Soul Asylum fan so I was thrilled to have Dave here to talk about his excellent new record, playing trumpet in the Minnesota Youth Symphony, different roles producers play, honoring his deceased band member Karl Mueller, our mutual guitar teacher Chris Osgood, and whether he is the guy yelling at the police at the beginning of The Replacements' Stink record. Was a great talk. Listen and subscribe.
Episode 179 features a conversation with a musician who has been on-and-off my radar for several years, drummer and DJ and more, Jerry Pentecost. While he has most recently been seen performing with Soul Asylum, he has performed alongside artists such as Bob Dylan, Amanda Shires, and even Old Crow Medicine Show. Jerry shares his upbringing, the best donut in Nashville, raising his kids, and more! Huge thanks to Jerry for taking some time away from his busy schedule for this and thanks to everyone who listens! You can find Jerry on social media at @jerrypentecost
This week we're discussing every album by alternative rock band Soul Asylum. Most people know them because of the Grammy-winning “Runaway Train.” But they actually started out as a wild Minneapolis punk band alongside The Replacements and Hüsker Dü. However, they quickly became a very straightforward rock band. Fans of the band beware, this is a brutal episode.Closing track: “Another World, Another Day” from Made to Be Broken (1986)Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexTom @tomosmansoundsHistory Tom's stuff:Music on Spotify, ApplePodcast on Spotify, YouTubeSubstackWebsiteMike's Picks:Say What You Will… (1984) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteLet Your Dim Light Shine (1995) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:Made to Be Broken (1986) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteThe Silver Lining (2006) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode…Say What You Will… (1984)Made to Be Broken (1986)While You Were Out (1986)Hang Time (1988)And the Horse They Rode in On (1990)Grave Dancers Union (1992)Let Your Dim Light Shine (1995)Candy from a Stranger (1998)The Silver Lining (2006)Delayed Reaction (2012)Change of Fortune (2016)Hurry Up and Wait (2020)Slowly but Shirley (2024)

Today's Song of the Day is “The Only Thing I'm Missing” from Soul Asylum's album Slowly but Shirley, out now.Soul Asylum will be performing at First Avenue on Saturday, December 28.
Dave tells the creepiest story about house hunting. He and Lydia once went house hunting and found a ghoulish art piece on the back of a bedroom door. There was an update to the 1989 Danbury Cold Case. City officials say there may have been an accomplice. NOTE: We edited today's podcast so that all of our interviews are at the end of the podcast back-to-back-to-back. Those interviews include: Jim Breuer, Adam Ferrara and Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum.
Dave Pirner and Soul Asylum are coming to Norwalk, CT this weekend. The boys got the opportunity to hang with Dave and talk about his amazing career, heading to sea with Kevin Smith and Soul Asylum's new album this morning.
We start the week with the September 2024 New Music Train winding its way from Louisville up to Wisconsin. Jay Ignacio and Bob Peterson are on board and they fill you in on new music from MJ Lenderman, Being Dead, Soul Asylum and Muun Bato. As we celebrate episode 200, we are doing a second take on our Tribute: A Tribute to Tributes series. This time, we're looking at the 90's classic: Sweet Relief
This week, Dave Pirner returns to the show to discuss the writing and recording of Soul Asylum's hit 1995 single "Misery." In this insightful conversation, Dave reveals the inspiration behind the song's biting critique of corporate America and the record industry. He shares how the band experimented with recording equipment during this period, enjoying creative freedom without interference from their record label, and how they worked with producer Butch Vig on the album Let Your Dim Light Shine. The discussion also touches on the success of the album, which solidified Soul Asylum's place in 90s rock, and the enduring popularity of "Misery" as a fan favorite that continues to resonate in live performances. Welcome to season 4, episode 11 of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast. This week my guest is Nick Cucci, Executive Director, Recording Academy. It is not often you meet someone who has worked with the likes of David Bowie, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Dixie Chicks, Soul Asylum, Harry Connick Jr, Kate Bush, KISS, and the list goes on and on. Nick Cucci started his career working for college radio in NJ. In this episode you will hear how Nick went from local college radio to being the Senior Executive Director for the New York Chapter of the Recording Academy. The Recording Academy does so much for the music industry – the one thing you may recognize is that the Recording Academy produces the Grammy Awards. Before the Recording Academy he held senior positions at Rough Trade Records, Columbia Records, RCA Records and MTV.Nick understands and has seen first-hand the impact that music has on all of our lives. It helps people through difficult times, we listen to it to celebrate milestones, and it is part of our everyday life. Nick has spent his career helping those whose passion and love of the music get their voices and instruments heard by the masses. This story truly is one that proves you really have no idea where your path will lead you and who you will meet along the way. What I loved most about this interview is that you can truly hear how much Nick loves the work he does. It is not just a job or career. Music is embedded in his soul. Although they've released over a dozen albums covering four decades, odds are if you ask someone on the street to name a song by Soul Asylum, it's going to be the mega-hit "Runaway Train" off their 1992 album Grave Dancers Union. There were other singles, "Black Gold" and "Somebody To Shove" off Grave Dancers Union, "Misery" and "Just Like Anyone" off the follow-up Let Your Dim Light Shine, but those albums and songs represented a band that had worked and toured and recorded since the early 1980s, taking a primordial post-punk and hardcore sound and slowly evolving album by album, starting with their debut Say What You Will, Clarence...Karl Sold The Truck in 1984. Like their Twin/Tone Records labelmates The Replacements, the manic youthful energy gave their lead singers an opportunity to gradually find their literal and lyrical voice. On each successive album, and a jump to major label A&M, the band continued to refine and improve their brand of midwestern alternative college rock, and reached the heights of their songwriting prowess just as a second major, Columbia, took a chance that would land them a home for their sixth album and eventual double platinum seller, the aforementioned Grave Dancers Union. Songs In This Episode Intro - Down On Up To Me (from Hang Time) 22:24 - Voodoo Doll (from Say What You Will, Clarence...Karl Sold The Truck) 28:36 - Masquerade (from Say What You Will, Clarence...Karl Sold The Truck) 33:16 - Tied to the Tracks (from Made To Be Broken) 36:46 - Can't Go Back (from Made To Be Broken) 40:20 - Freaks (While You Were Out) 47:22 - Endless Farwell (Hang Time) 51:30 - Cartoon (Hang Time) Outro - Closer To The Stars (While You Were Out) Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Buckle up everyone—it's milestone time! This episode of For Songs is the nice, big, round number of 70! That's right, 7-0! And helping me celebrate is the most popular guest I've had—Minneapolis singer/songwriter/guitarist Dan Murphy. A co-founding member of one of Minnesota's biggest rock band Soul Asylum, Dan is making his third appearance on the show. In this episode of For Songs Singles, Dan discusses the first single from his new band's forthcoming album. The song is Speedway, the band is the Scarlet Goodbye, and the album is El Camino Adios, set for release in January. The band's second album, El Camino Adios marks a departure of sorts for Dan and his songwriting partner Jeff Arundel. As exemplified by the undeniably catchy Speedway, El Camino Adios is a character/story driven album, inspired by everyday life in rural America. Dan talks how he and Jeff approached the album and made a conscious effort to evoke stories and write outside the first person. Dan also details how a few years of playing live together brought a greater cohesion to the songs. So sit back, crack a beer, and enjoy Dan's third appearance on the show!

Baxie talks to legendary Massachusetts based singer/songwriter Juliana Hatfield! Since the late 1980's Juliana has released nineteen solo albums (with the promise of more on the way). She's released three albums of covers--including last year's "Juliana Hatfield Sings ELO". Plus, she released several records with her first band, The Blake Babies. She's also had numerous collaborations with the likes of Evan Dando of The Lemonheads and Paul Westerberg of The Replacements. Juliana talks about all of that, songwriting, touring, and many of her hits like "My Sister"(1993), "Spin the Bottle"(1994), and "Universal Heart-Beat"(1995). Juliana is going on tour this month with Soul Asylum and will be making a stop at The Sinclair Theater in Cambridge on November 4th. She and the Juliana Hatfield Three will also make a stop at The Drake in Amherst on November 3rd. Brought to you by Metro Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Chicopee
