His current model called UltraPhones is the isolation headphone of choice for top professionals across the country. Knudtson is also an educator and author of numerous drum method books. In 2002 Gordy released the first book and instructional video about Open/Close Technique, which introduced nomenclature, notation, and synchronizations, and showed how it can be used to create a family of single stroke rolls which directly parallel the double stroke rolls. *Watch for a video with a lesson on Drum Channel in the near future. Join us in Episode 4 of Nashville Drummers Podcast! Today we feature our good friend Taylor Friesth. We learn about his unique background and journey to Nashville, his passion for education that led him to publish his 1st book, 'The Sly Hat', and how he's learned to define his own unique path. About Taylor:Colorado native, Taylor Friesth, is a performer, author, and educator who has delved deeply into drumming since the age of 6 years. Since then he has performed on stages such as Red Rocks and Folsom Field. His drumming has led him to perform with various groups from GRiZ to New Orleans style brass band Guerrilla Fanfare. His versatility has given him a wide range of musical abilities that has resulted in a unique sound of his own.Taylor has found a love for teaching drums ever since middle school where he began to give private lessons to local kids in his neighborhood. As a 13-year-old, Taylor would reach his audience by distributing drum lesson flyers throughout his school and local music shops. Over time his teaching would expand to go online where he started his website TFdrums.com, a website devoted to showing drummers how to expand and rethink how they look at the drum set. His dedication to finding the most effective way to teach each individual student is something he still works on to this day.In 2016, Taylor released his book “The Sly Hat”, a 13 chapter book focused on how to use your hi-hat foot as a part of your grooves and fills, as opposed to having it keep a steady pulse under what you are playing. The book caught the attention of drummers such as Gordy Knudtson (former head of percussion at McNally Smith College of Music, and drummer for the Steve Miller Band), Rod Morgenstein (former head of percussion at Berklee College of Music, and drummer for Winger), and Skip Hadden (Weather Report), and even received a review in the 2018 November edition of Modern Drummer.Today, Taylor teaches local drum clinics featured around his book, The Sly Hat, and works with students from all over the United States through his website TFdrums.comFollow Taylor on Social Media:tfdrums.comInstagramYouTubeFacebookAs Mentioned in the Episode:The Sly HatThe Sly Hat (Video Trailer)GRiZGuerrilla Fanfare Brass BandMusic Featured in this Episode:Music by Guerrilla Fanfare Brass Band"Cymbology" "F-Town"℗ Moorhead Avenue Records------Connect with Nashville Drummers Podcast:InstagramFacebookWebsiteInterview by: Dan Ainspan, Nathan SletnerRecorded October 2021 in Nashville, TN

Join us for our second “Virtual Concert” live streamed from Unity Minneapolis on Friday, May 15th at 5:00 PM CST. This musical event will not only benefit the Twin Cities' and Unity communities by reaching out to our many friends and family at this time of social distancing and sheltering in place – your online donations during the event will also benefit the artists, as well as the many ministries of Unity Minneapolis. On hand to deliver the musical festivities will be Joyann Parker and Lori Dokken. Joyann Parker has been called “the best Twin Cities female singer you've never heard.” (Jon Bream/StarTribune). Joyann is a classically trained pianist but after her ears came into contact with the soul sounds of the Stax label and later also added blues, she decided to invest in a career as a soul singer. Bill Wilson of Reflections in Blue says – “Joyann Parker is the real deal … a powerful vocalist, an accomplished musician on both guitar and piano, and the writer of songs that hold up over time. This is blues and deep southern soul of the highest order. Joyann Parker is a 21st century blues woman.” Joyann has become a frequent guest artist for Unity Minneapolis' Sunday morning services and it is there that congregants have become fans of her earthy, authentic and often gospel-tinged stylings. She and Lori have struck up a musical partnership over the past year and together they serve up staples of the contemporary music catalog with a new drive to dig deeper into the style, genre and lyric of whatever selection they are performing. Lori Dokken – Over the past four decades, Lori has performed at every major venue in the Twin Cities from The Dakota to The Guthrie to The Ordway. A sought-after accompanist, she is also a successful concert producer, educator, vocal coach, arranger, and vocalist. Currently the Music Director at Unity Minneapolis, she has also been the MD for everything from ensembles at McNally Smith College of Music to acts at the Bryant Lake Bowl and recently was the Music Director for Disenchanted during its successful run at The Illusion Theater in November 2014. She has produced headline shows for cruise ships as well as local cabaret acts and has opened for legends like Eartha Kitt, Carole King and Tony Bennett. Lori has sung backups for Kenny Loggins and shared the stage with Beatrice Arthur. Her diverse production credits include sold out shows at The Hopkin's Center for the Arts, The Dakota Jazz Club, The Chanhassen Dinner Theatre and many local concert venues. She partnered with The Ordway Center for the Performing Arts to produce “Painting Joni” – a concert featuring the music of Joni Mitchell for which she was also the Musical Director, Arranger and one of the featured performers. She was the Entertainment Producer for five years for an HIV/AIDS fund raiser called “Healing of the Hearts” which netted over $500,000 in proceeds for The Aliveness Project and also founded and produced a charity golf tournament for ten years that raised close to $250,000 for One Heartland.

ED CHERNEY is an engineer, mixer and producer. He’s won Grammys and TEC Awards and just won his first Emmy. He owes success to the musical greats he’s sat behind over the years — giants like Quincy Jones and Bruce Swedien, Don Was and Phil Ramone — listening through their ears, learning how they make great music. Ed’s all up in the tech, but knowing where a song’s heart lies and seeing that it shines through is what he’s known for and maybe why he’s worked with such diverse artists as Bonnie Raitt. The Rolling Stones. Wynton Marsalis. Iggy Pop. Bette Midler. Eric Clapton. Wynonna. Buddy Guy. Jackson Browne. Lenny Kravitz. Ry Cooder. Keb’ Mo. Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, John Mayer, Elton John, Sting, Bob Seger, Jackson Browne, the Goo Goo Dolls & New Spinal Tap. 3 GRAMMYS. One Best Engineered Album win -Bonnie Raitt’s “Longing In Their Hearts” came in a year that he recorded and mixed three of the five albums nominated in the category.Ed has won 5 TEC Awards awarded by NAMM and was inducted into TEC Hall of Fame in 2015. He has recorded and mixed Willie Nelson’s new “Summertime, Willie Nelson Sings Gershwin,”. Ed founded the Grammy’s Producers and Engineers Wing. Recorded in the midst of the worldwide shock and mourning, this episode departs just a bit from the approach we’ve taken so far in Liquid Music Playlist. In the second part of the conversation, “hip hop’s poet laureate” (CNN), Saul Williams, talks extensively about his intimate experiences with the “divine communicator” Prince Rogers Nelson and the enormous impact Prince had on musicians, artists, and listeners alike. Williams begins the interview with insights into his multimedia work MartyrLoserKing, hacking as performance art, and “music as the weapon of the future” (Fela Kuti) as well as his Liquid Music Series performance with the Mivos Quartet, which included the premieres of two brand-new commissions by Jace Clayton and Ted Hearne (co-commissioned with the Givens Foundation for African American Literature). “There are so many people growing up now with manufactured sound – with manufactured artists – with manufactured careers – manufactured ideas wrapped in plastic and sold to you. Prince never allowed that to touch the essence of what he created. Because he understood creation and he understood the potentiality and the power of music and of art itself. And so, if there is any lesson that we can learn from Prince, it’s to continue to let our middle fingers go up to the industry, to the manufacturing of ideas and realize that that divine independence that connects us as human beings – to life, to this planet, to the whole, to the spirit, to love – that we have to continue to investigate that though sound, through voice, through heart, through rhythm, through guitar, through all this stuff, and we cannot let whoever these moguls are get in the way of musical freedom.” – Saul Williams PLAYLIST: 1.
