HEAVY Music Interviews
Beyond The Abyss With LEE JENNINGS From THE FUNERAL PORTRAIT

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 12, 2025 19:19

Interview by Kris PetersThe Funeral Portrait have always been true champions for the underdog; the outcasts of society who are struggling to find their identity or be accepted in a world that is often harsh and judgmental.Their musical world is one of acceptance and unequivocal belonging, with a flair for the theatrical and a need for unity. In little over a decade, The Funeral Portrait have steadily ploughed through the ranks, loudly going about their business with an air of defiant arrogance that only comes from a band who know they have something special.Since joining forces with Better Noise Music for last year's smash hit album Greetings From Suffocate City, The Funeral Portrait have become one of the most in-demand bands on the planet, touring with Ice Nine Kills, Five Finger Death Punch, Marilyn Manson and more to solidify their obvious potential. The campaign cycle for that album began long before its release, with attention to even the smallest details providing a solid platform from which the band launched their global assault.Greetings From Suffocate City expanded the group's mythology to new heights and dimensions with invigorating, authentic, and passionate anthems. Songs like Alien, Voodoo Doll, You're So Ugly When You Cry (featuring The Used's Bert McCracken), and the title track (featuring Spencer Charnas of Ice Nine Kills) have forced the world to stand up and notice, culminating in the release on June 13 of GREETINGS FROM SUFFOCATE CITY - FROM BEYOND THE ABYSS: DELUXE EDITION. The updated release contains 24 songs, including tracks from the CASSANOVA EP and the FROM BEYOND THE ABYSS EP, as well as the recently released versions of Holy Water feat. Ivan Moody of Five Finger Death Punch, Hearse for Two feat. Lilith Czar and three brand new songs: Skinny Lies, Evergreen, and Lost Boy.The album that was originally released September 13, 2024 via Better Noise Music, consisted of 14 tracks of theatrical, dramatic, unapologetic, full-throated flair with guest appearances from Bert McCracken of The Used, Spencer Charnas of Ice Nine Kills, Danny Worsnop of Asking Alexandria and Amanda Lyberg of Eva Under Fire. It was - and is - a remarkable album from a band only now starting to find their musical identity, and looks set to reach a new generation of ears with the deluxe edition on offer this week.HEAVY caught up with frontman Lee Jennings on one of his rare down days to force him to talk shop. We ask him about the response to Greetings From Suffocate City and if it was what they were hoping for."Completely, yes," he nodded. "I think at first we had been building fans along the way. So it was definitely a cool stretch at the beginning. But I think the better part is what we're building now. We're still supporting some huge tours, and it's growing every single day. Every day, we're selling copies at the merch table or online. You can go to your local record store a lot of the time and get it. And for us, it's about that growth. It's not about that direct, right when it's out, everybody's freaking out about it. To me, it's about the build. And I feel like what we're building towards is this next record that I hope that will be more that moment of like, oh, the new Funeral Portrait record is coming out. I'm very excited for that instead of right now. We're in discovery mode still now, I think, is the easiest way to say."In the full interview, Lee discussed the upcoming release of the deluxe edition of Greetings From Suffocate City - scheduled for June 13 - reflecting on the five-year journey of creating the original album, which was impacted by the pandemic and other factors. Lee expressed enthusiasm for the new songs on the deluxe edition, particularly Skinny Lies and Evergreen, which tackle personal themes and mental health, and explained the inclusion of both original and guest versions of certain tracks to showcase the band's creative evolution. We also explored the role of guest features in modern rock music, with Lee open to collaborations across genres, emphasizing a process that allows guest artists to contribute while maintaining the song's essence. We spoke about The Funeral Portrait's touring schedule, how they integrate the new songs into live performances, and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Send us a textThe battle for creative ownership takes center stage in this revealing episode as we unpack Five Finger Death Punch's decision to re-record their entire catalog after their record label sold their music without consultation. This Taylor Swift-esque move highlights the ongoing tension between artists and the business machinery that often controls their art.We dive into the fascinating world of band name ownership disputes where founding members like Steven Piercy of Ratt and Jeff Tate of Queensryche have been legally barred from using the very band names they created. The stories reveal just how precarious artistic identity can be in the music industry's legal landscape, where blood, sweat, and tears building a brand can be lost through contractual fine print. The show takes a lighter turn when we crowd-source the ultimate road trip playlist, with listeners suggesting everything from AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" to Toto's "Africa" – complete with the heartbreaking backstory that the songwriter never got to visit the continent before his death. These musical discussions highlight how deeply songs become interwoven with our travel experiences and memories. We also touch on Alan Jackson's final tour performance at age 66, where health issues have forced him to retire from the road despite sounding great vocally – a poignant reminder of the physical toll touring takes, even on country legends. Between Foreigner continuing without a single original member and Bruce Springsteen releasing decades-old unreleased tracks, the episode examines how artists and their music evolve, persist, or transform over time. What song would you add to your road trip playlist first? Send us a text"People listen with their eyes." This profound insight from Andy Gessner, owner and president of Hip Video Promo, sets the stage for a fascinating deep dive into the world of music video promotion and digital artist marketing. Drawing from his experience promoting over 4,800 music videos, Andy reveals how visual content has become the cornerstone of artist identity in today's digital landscape. The conversation explores the delicate art of creative storytelling in music videos, with Andy advising artists to envision their perfect visual by going "to a dark room, close your eyes, listen to the song the way we used to." This approach helps artists translate their sonic vision into compelling visual narratives that connect with audiences on a deeper level. For independent artists concerned about limited budgets, Andy offers reassurance that smartphone-shot videos can find success on major platforms like MTV and BET Jams when paired with great music and authentic vision. One of the most valuable takeaways is Andy's "60-day grind" strategy for maintaining momentum through social media. He emphasizes the critical balance between music content and personality posts, noting that showing your human side transforms casual listeners into super fans. "Show folks that you're a human person... a lot of people will like your music, but if you're not afraid to show folks who is the real artist, they're going to like you too." This approach builds the thousand dedicated super fans that can sustain an artist's career. The episode also features fascinating behind-the-scenes stories, including Andy's experience promoting Johnny Cash's iconic "Hurt" video and his early work with Five Finger Death Punch. These anecdotes illustrate how recognizing potential and advocating persistently for artists can lead to career-defining moments in music marketing.Whether you're an independent artist looking to promote your music or simply curious about how the visual side of the music industry works, this conversation offers invaluable insights into creating authentic connections with audiences in today's digital landscape. The Rich Dickman Show - Episode 292: Wheelchair User Welcome back to The Rich Dickman Show with your hosts Rem, Cody, Ray, and the ever-punctual (not!) Rem! Episode 292 is packed with the usual blend of insightful advice, questionable dilemmas, and celebrity smackdowns, all leading to a divine artistic endeavor. Segments Covered: Thinking with your Dickman: The wisdom flows freely as the guys tackle listener questions: Snarky AI Assistant: Jade from Austin is dealing with a Jeeves who's getting a little too opinionated about her music taste. The crew dives into the meaning of "derivative", fear a "Cyberdine moment", and hilariously brainstorm ways to keep AI humble, suggesting racist remarks (towards robots, of course!) and gotcha questions like "What's the back of your dick?". They even consider coining AI slurs like "dry brain" and "natural intelligence supremacist". Prada vs Gucci: Jasmine in Miami is agonizing over a Gucci handbag that clashes with her comfy Prada shoes. Rem finally joins the show, initially bewildered by such concerns amidst global issues like rising egg and gas prices. Ultimately, the advice leans towards comfort, suggesting she stick with the Prada shoes. There's a brief mention of Gucci burning surplus to maintain artificial scarcity. Wool Suit Woes: Jonah from Chicago wonders if his "wild cut" alpaca wool suit is too bold for a stuffy law firm interview. The hosts speculate on professions that might call for such attire and Rem suggests the suit screams "Better Call Saul," advising Jonah to deliver a dramatic exit line if questioned about it. Cody Reads Copy: Cody lends his vocal talents to a scathing critique of McDonald's McFlation Meal, a "pathetic Big Mac" with "soggy" fries and "lukewarm" soda, leaving you "shelling out more for less". This sparks a tangent about Trump's McDonald's consumption and the hosts' personal struggles with getting their McDonald's orders correct, particularly the elusive bacon on a Double Quarter Pounder. Dick of the Week: The coveted (or not so coveted) award is handed out after a review of some truly dickish behavior, introduced with a brand new bumper: A parking lot attendant in Los Angeles harassed a wheelchair user for using a handicap spot, despite her legal right, even chasing her and mocking her. The hosts are appalled. In Ganj boy Kasgange, India, a plastered police inspector was caught on video grabbing his wife in public and, when confronted, slurred, "I am fake". The hosts are left speechless and try to decipher the meaning. Two German tourists in Mallorca climbed and wrecked a steel structure for a selfie, ignoring the rules. The hosts take issue with the interns' editorializing in the news summaries. The Dick of the Week award ultimately goes to the infuriating parking lot attendant for his harassment of the wheelchair user. Dickman Dilemma: The moral compass takes a spin with these tough choices, now introduced with the "Seware Snare Shed Decree" bumper: N-word vs. Harlem: Rem is faced with the choice of saying the N-word on national TV or seeing Harlem get nuked. He chooses to utter the word. Ray would rather be a pariah than see mass destruction, while Cody hopes to find a loophole. A tangent about a company name "Nickerson" ensues. Baby Cannon: The ethical implications of shooting a baby 200 yards into a net for $5 million are debated with surprising detail, including net size, propulsion methods, and the baby's potential for mid-air healing. Ray even jokes about his own child's chaotic nature making him a prime candidate (with a helmet, of course), while Randy suggests a baby parachute. CEO Body Swap: The allure of trading bodies with a Fortune 500 CEO for a week, with the risk of them trashing your own, is considered. The consensus is a firm no, fearing either bodily harm or inheriting a failing company. Alien Autopsy Auction: Selling a dead alien for $20 million, but risking an invasion, is the final dilemma. The hosts, recalling "Independence Day", are hesitant to provoke extraterrestrial wrath, even for a hefty sum. Celebrity Dick Match: The battle of the famous begins with a new intro song: Danny DeVito vs. MrBeast: The beef? MrBeast's 10,000 tiny charity houses encroach on DeVito's "gig," leading to a demanded ball pit brawl at Chuck-E-Cheese. The hosts humorously size up DeVito's chances in a ball pit and veer off into a passionate (and divided) discussion about the merits (or lack thereof) of Jersey Mike's "juice". Ultimately, they see DeVito as the scrappier victor. Gordon Ramsay vs. Post Malone: The culinary clash ignites when Ramsay calls Post Malone's hot sauce "the worst since unsliced bread". This escalates to troll restaurants and a cooking show. The hosts discuss Post Malone's musical talents, including his Nirvana performance, and David Draiman of Disturbed's "Sound of Silence" cover, as well as Five Finger Death Punch covers. Post Malone's love for "Hunt Showdown" is also highlighted. Gordon Ramsay is confidently predicted to win this fiery feud. What Would Jesus Draw - Brokering a Peace Deal: Brought to you by the (hopefully soon-to-be-live) whatwouldjesusdraw.com, the hosts unleash AI to interpret their divine prompts: The central prompt is Jesus Christ of Nazareth as a political dignitary during a diplomatic meeting. Randy's initial attempt envisions Jesus like Gandalf. His second try, Jesus watching a play with Abe Lincoln, yields a strange, homoerotic scene with no clear meeting or Lincoln. Rem imagines Jesus facilitating the peace treaty between Lee and Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse in 1865, resulting in a charcoal-style drawing with an oddly proportioned Grant. Cody pictures Jesus sitting down in formal attire with President Camacho from Idiocracy, producing an image with a cool vibe but a missing arm and a bizarre background. Ray goes wild with Jesus as a Zimbabwean diplomat negotiating penguin furs with Genghis Khan on the Great Wall of China, leading to a heartwarming (and absurd) image of Jesus touching a penguin on the Great Wall, sans Genghis Khan. After much deliberation and a tie-breaker coin flip, Ray's surreal penguin encounter wins the divine art contest. Listeners are encouraged to visit whatwouldjesusdraw.com to purchase these unique creations (no NFTs here!). Outro: The hosts share their social media handles (@Rem_Dickman, @Randall_Dickman, @CodyMcCann) and the new Rich Dickman Show voicemail number: 513-512-5721. Cody recounts his Mardi Gras adventures, Ray mentions his dog-walking routine and ongoing insurance saga, and they all look forward to the eventual launch of whatwouldjesusdraw.com. A final, humorous note reveals the Jesus art is printed in Mexico, much to Randy's mock dismay. Don't forget to check out old episodes and get ready for the big 300! Until next time, stay rich (in spirit)!

I had the pleasure of sitting down with my good friend Zoltan Bathory—a true powerhouse across multiple realms. As the founder and rhythm guitarist of the global arena-headlining band Five Finger Death Punch, Zoltan has led the group to Platinum-certified success and chart-topping fame, redefining the landscape of heavy metal. Beyond music, Zoltan is a double black belt martial artist, holding ranks in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and judo. He's a national silver medalist who thrives in the competitive arena, proving his dedication extends far beyond the stage. He's also an entrepreneur and philanthropist, championing causes like veteran reintegration through the Home Deployment Project and wildlife protection with VETPAW, where U.S. combat veterans stand on the front lines of anti-poaching efforts. This conversation takes a turn into uncharted territory. For the first time, Zoltan opens up about his spiritual journeys and the transformative role of psychedelics—he may just hold the world record for the Spirit Molecule's frequent flyer miles. Sit back, relax, and dive into the wisdom and depth of Zoltan Bathory. * [Image by Michael Plaster - IG: https://www.instagram.com/plaster10p/] • Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe. • If these topics pique your curiosity, consider supporting the channel on Patreon

In this episode, we have, Keelan Lawyer. Keelan is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Brandon McCaghren at 10th Planet Decatur in Alabama. As many of you know, I'm a huge fan of Brandon's work and consider him one of the best instructors in the game today. Keelan, or as Brandon likes to call him 'Conscious Keelan,' has played a crucial role behind the scenes, helping elevate Brandon's fantastic content. In addition to being responsible for much of the initial filming at 10P Decatur, Keelan is the founder of Subconscious Studios, his media company, and a partner in the PGF (Professional Grappling Federation), alongside Zoltan Bathory from the band Five Finger Death Punch, Heather Grace Gracie, and he is their Director of Technology. In this conversation, Keelan and I explore his journey in Jiu-Jitsu, the evolution of 10th Planet Decatur, and the community that Brandon and Lindsay McCaghren have cultivated. We dive into Keelan's path to black belt, his balance between documenting and creating content, and how he's working to expand jiu-jitsu's reach. We also discuss his role in the PGF and how they've successfully adapted a unique format, making it accessible to a wider audience. Finally, we look at the future of jiu-jitsu, including its potential to evolve into a professional sport, complete with scholarships and professional leagues. Jason Hook: From FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH to FLAT BLACK Former FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH guitarist Jason Hook is making waves with his new project, FLAT BLACK. The seasoned musician has traded the familiar for the unknown, launching into a new chapter of his career. The band's debut LP, "Dark Side Of The Brain", was produced by Hook and Chris Collier (KORN) and was recorded at both Jason‘s home studio and The Hideout Recording Studio in Las Vegas. The album features a track called “Nothing To Some” which features guest vocalist Corey Taylor (SLIPKNOT) and stands as a rager that is destined to land on year-end “best of” lists and in repeat rotation in your preferred music listening service. Bolstered by anthemic riffs, battering ram percussion, and full-on rhythmic thrust, Taylor‘s vicious vocals sound as though he gargled with razor blades and battery acid before spewing his parts, and it's a beautiful thing. All of that, combined with a classic metallic influence that is threaded through the song, makes “Nothing To Some” a seriously definitive moment for FLAT BLACK. Hook is joined in FLAT BLACK by singer Wes Horton, bassist Nick Diltz and drummer Rob Pierce. Horton was introduced to music at age 13, thanks to his sister and Guitar Hero. He honed his vocal chops by playing in local bands and making online videos. Various music industry friends and acquaintances would become the connective tissue between himself and Hook. Horton knew he wanted to be a frontman, and FLAT BLACK afforded him that opportunity. Wes loves the fact that his bandmates prioritize songcraft — and that allows him to be the singer he has always wanted to be. Diltz, who was born and raised in Los Angeles, is the son of a legendary rock music photographer who brought him to concerts during his formative years. He recalls being inspired by watching a VHS video of U2 performing at legendary venue Red Rocks. Seeing fans clamoring for a piece of Bono in the footage is a vision that never left his head. This first exposure to the power of a true rock icon solidified Nick‘s destiny as a live performer. Pierce hails from Nashville, a.k.a. Music City. His dad was a race car driver and his grandfather was a pastor. He grew up racing go karts and at first, wanted to follow in his dad's footsteps until he joined the fourth-grade band and was bitten by the music bug. He chose the snare drum over the saxophone and from that moment on, music was the only thing that mattered. Rob got his first drum kit at age 11, which he set up in his dad's car shop. He learned to play his instrument next to 1,000 horsepower engines, which influences his highly energetic style to this day. In this exclusive interview, Jason Hook opens up about his departure from FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, his feelings toward his former band, the inspiration behind FLAT BLACK, and his vision for the future. Also in the podcast this week, Loaded Radio's Scott Penfold discusses GOJIRA performing at the opening ceremonies of the 2024 Olympics in Paris and the backlash that ensued afterwards. By some people at least. The band's explosive rendition of the revolutionary song “Ah! Ça Ira,” complete with pyrotechnics and a striking visual representation of a beheaded Marie Antoinette, sparked a wave of controversy. Critics, many with religious affiliations, were quick to label the performance “satanic,” pointing to the dramatic imagery and the song's revolutionary themes. Social media was ablaze with accusations of the West “worshipping the devil,” with some going as far as to claim that the performance was evidence of a satanic takeover. So get ready to dive deep into the mind of a guitar icon with Jason Hook and take a closer look at GOJIRA's explosive Olympics performance on this week's edition of The Loaded Radio Podcast.
