My first memory is of hitting everything in sight at 2 years old. From playing in the church from the age of 5 to performing with the Percussion Scholarship Group, (PSG), starting in 4th grade, I have had many valuable experiences and lessons that have brought me to where I am today. Directed by Patricia Dash, percussionist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and her husband Douglas Waddell, percussionist with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Percussion Scholarship Group is where my formal training began. During my time there I was featured on radio and television with From the Top, The TODAY Show, and Chicago Tonight was awarded the Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award and received second place in the Chicago Symphony Youth Auditions. Thanks to them I was fortunate to be accepted to all colleges that I auditioned for in 2010 and I chose to go to DePaul School of Music to continue my training. While at DePaul I was able to develop quickly resulting in being added to orchestra sub-lists, advancing in Civic orchestra auditions, attending the National Repertory Orchestra Festival, and eventually winning the Detroit Fellowship in 2014. With the help of my mentors, the percussion section, the principal trombonist, and the remaining members of the symphony, I was able to begin advancing in major auditions as well as further my technique and knowledge of this particular business. After finishing the fellowship there, I applied for and was hired as a fellow of the Pittsburgh Symphony. This was cut very short because of my success in the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra audition, where I worked as the Principal Percussionist for 2 years and was layered tenured. I now serve as the Principal Percussionist of Grant Park Orchestra. I always hope that with each degree of progress I make in my life that I can somehow help someone else do the same.

Joining Michael, Sky, and Sui-Lin on the podcast today is the Principal percussionist of the Kansas City Symphony, published author, teacher, performer, arranger? (more on that later in the episode) and overall great guy Josh Jones! A native of Chicago, Illinois, Josh Jones started hitting things at age 2 and received his first drum set at age 3. Josh began his formal studies in percussion with the Percussion Scholarship Program under the direction of Chicago Symphony member Patricia Dash, and Chicago Lyric Opera member Douglas Waddell. He earned his Bachelor's in Music from DePaul School of music and was the orchestra fellow of both the Detroit and Pittsburgh symphonies. In 2020, Josh joined the Kansas City Symphony as Principal Percussionist. Josh has been featured at Carnegie Hall, on radio and television, and has had two short documentaries made about his musical development and experience. He also authored a percussion method book series, “Spatial Studies for Hitting Things”, and writes musical and philosophical blogs on his website, drummojo.com. Josh really enjoys giving back to the community as well as mentoring young musicians and traveling. In this episode of the show, we talk about Josh's time in the Percussion Scholarship Program, a program for young percussionists in Chicago that our very own Sui-Lin was a member of. We also discuss his career in other symphonies such as an apprentice in the Detroit Symphony, the principal percussionist in the Calgary Symphony, and the principal in the Kansas City Symphony. Also mentioned are some ideas about auditioning including how to overcome anxiety and what to bring, the documentary Josh was featured on in 2016, the books that Josh has been writing "Spatial Studies for Hitting Things", and many more interesting and engaging topics. Still not sold on watching this episode? Here are a few wonderful quotes from our guest on the topic of auditioning: "Don't play it accurately, play it musically." My guest today is the Principal Percussionist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, one of the most friendly musicians you could ever work with, my friend and colleague, Matt Howard. Sports, sports, and more sports…today's episode is a straight up masterclass on how being a professional musician is completely parallel to being a professional athlete. Think your tenure process was tough? Make sure you listen all the way to the end for an unbelievable story about the types of hoops LA Phil musicians jump through to make our boss, Gustavo Dudamel happy. Worried that you got a “late start” in classical music? Wait until you hear the surprising success timeline for someone who later became one of the world's premiere orchestral players… He wasn't at all competitive Had never heard his hometown orchestra until he was a senior He mostly just played drums in a rock band Didn't practice Didn't take lessons And when he finally decided that we wanted to go to college for music, he only applied to one college, into which he did not get accepted. Sound like a roadmap to success? You might be surprised… Matt's going to share some amazing advice on how to prepare for an audition, how to effectively use a metronome, and we're even going to find out who he thinks is the greatest drummer of all time. You're even going to get a free percussion rudiments lesson from Matt, totally for free by listening to this podcast…you're welcome. Enjoy and happy listening! In our final episode of Season 2, we welcome the Principal Percussionist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Matt Howard. Matt is from Los Angeles and he talks to us about his experience taking an audition for his hometown orchestra, and how he wasn't invited the first time (we've heard this before from several of our other guests). He lets us in on his routine for taking auditions, what it's like being on the other side of the screen listening to auditions, but also, he talks about breaking it down to the basics and being mentally prepared. What is the constant, and what is the variable? The more he broke it down, the more he realized the variable was almost always mental. Everyone preparing for an audition, regardless of your instrument, needs to listen to what Matt has to say. It's wonderful advice and Matt was a great guest!Thank you for subscribing and let us know your thoughts or who'd you like to hear on Behind the Screen at screenisup@gmail.com

Every now and again, you just have to have a dance party in your living room. That’s just some of the happiness advice Matt Howard shares in today’s episode of Lift U Up: Inspiring Health Stories. For Matt, music is always essential. Currently working as the Principal Percussionist with the https://www.laphil.com/musicdb/artists/2491/matthew-howard (LA Philharmonic), Matt shares his story on how his path led him to his https://www.nws.edu/news/first-year-percussion-fellow-lands-dream-job-with-la-philharmonic/ (dream job) so quickly. Even during a pandemic when he can’t perform live, Matt still finds a way to bring music into his life – and the lives of others. Matt still pinches himself when he is reminded that he is living his dream playing music for a living. Growing up, Matt recalls that there was always music playing around the house. From oldies to modern rock, he found himself drawn to the artists his parents would play. When they saw he caught the music bug, they helped him pursue his passion. Matt learned how to play the drums and other percussion instruments and attended a high school music program. As a senior in high school, Matt didn’t think that he wanted to have music as his life-long profession. But when an accident left him temporarily unable to play - he knew he had to do something after graduation. Time attending community college, led Matt back to becoming obsessed with percussion. “If you want to get good at something, you have to obsess over it,” says Matt. Today, Matt lives out his days continuing to find happiness in music.
