Spreche ich mit anderen Menschen über das Thema Familie, wir oft schnell klar, dass die meisten Familiengeschichten nicht gleichförmig sind oder gar reibungslos verlaufen, sondern immer auch von Konflikten und Unstimmigkeiten geprägt sind und sie äußeren Einflüssen unterlegen sind, die sie auf die eine oder andere Weise zu beeinflussen vermögen. Denn immer agieren Menschen miteinander und selbst wenn sie es nicht tun, löst dies eine Reaktion aus. Aber die Familie ist auch die kleinste gemeinsame Zelle, wir erwachsen aus ihr und sie bildet unseren Ursprung. Aus Mangel an Wissen über die eigene Familiengeschichte kann es dazu kommen, dass wir im Laufe unseres Lebens eigene Wahrheiten dazu erfinden, die sich in uns so manifestieren, dass wir sie für die Wahrheit halten. Vielleicht lässt es sich mit selbst erdachten Geschichten manchmal auch einfacher Leben. Das Streben nach Wissen über die eigene Herkunft ist auf jeden Fall eine Triebfeder, die viele Menschen antreibt. Ähnlich ging es vielleicht auch Monika Helfer, als sie ihren, in diesem Jahr im Carl Hanser Verlag veröffentlichten, Roman „Die Bagage“ schrieb bzw. schon vorher, als sie sich mit ihrer eigenen Familiengeschichte befasste. Diese setzt sie in ihrem Roman teils aus eigenen Erinnerungen, teils aus Erinnerungen von Angehörigen und sicher auch mit etwas Fantasie und Wohlwollen zusammen.Sie setzt ein im Jahr 1914 bei ihren Großeltern Maria und Josef Moosbrugger. Diese leben in einem Bergdorf im Vorarlberg nahe Bregenz und werden von der restlichen Dorfgemeinschaft nur als die Bagage bezeichnet. Ihr Haus befindet sich weit abgeschieden von den anderen – bis zum nächstgelegenen dauert es eine Stunde – denn ihre Vorfahren waren zu spät gekommen und hier war der Boden am billigsten gewesen, jedoch auch am schwierigsten zu bebauen. Der Postadjunkt stellt hier nur einmal die Woche die Post zu, aufgrund des beschwerlichen Weges, und er ist es auch, der Maria die Nachricht übermittelt, dass Josef in den Krieg einberufen wird. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt haben Maria und Josef vier Kinder: Hermann, der Älteste und stillen Gemüts, der sich eher den Tieren verbunden fühlt, dann sein zwei Jahre jüngerer Bruder Lorenz, der als eigensinnig beschrieben wird und mit seinen Rechenkünsten die Lehrer ins Staunen versetzt. Tochter Katharina, die zu diesem Zeitpunkt elf Jahre alt ist und der Mutter im Haushalt helfen soll und der kleine Walter, der laut Helfers Worten „[...]noch zu nichts zu gebrauchen [war]“. (S. 22)Der Stand der Familie im Dorf ist schwierig. Sie sind die Außenseiter und das aus vielerlei Gründen. Neben der schon erwähnten randständigen Lage ihres Hauses kommt auch noch Marias ausgesprochene Schönheit hinzu. Es wird betont, dass es keinen Mann im Dorf gibt, der ihr nicht gern einmal nahe gekommen wäre, was fast zwangsläufig auch den Neid und die Missgunst der Frauen nach sich zog. Aber auch Josef ist den übrigen Dorfbewohnern suspekt. Er spricht nicht mit und auch nicht wie die anderen Männer und beteiligt sich nicht an ihren Aktivitäten, zudem er in ihren Augen den Neid um seine schöne Maria ablesen kann. Die Ausnahme ist der Bürgermeister Gottlieb Fink. Mit diesem macht Josef seine „Geschäftchen“, wie es heißt und von denen niemand etwas Genaues weiß und um die er ebenfalls beneidet wird. Der Bürgermeister ist es auch, den Josef bittet, auf seine Maria aufzupassen, während er im Krieg ist, und dieser verspricht es ihm.Es folgt die Zeit von Josefs Abwesenheit. Der Leser erfährt beispielsweise wie der Bürgermeister Maria mit auf ein Dorffest in einer nahe gelegenen Ortschaft nimmt, wie sie dort einen Deutschen kennenlernt, der kurze Zeit später vor ihrem Haus steht. Und dann wechselt Monika Helfer von der Erzählenden dazu, wie sie selbst vom nun Folgenden erfuhr:„Diese Anekdote hat meine Großmutter ihrer ältesten Tochter Katharina erzählt, aber erst einige Jahre später. Meine Tante Kathe hat sie mir dann weitererzählt. Sie sagte, ein einziges Mal sei ihre Mama, also meine Großmutter, betrunken gewesen in ihrem Leben, sie wisse nicht was der Anlass war, da habe sie plötzlich, wie aus dem himmelblauen Himmel heraus gesagt, sie habe sich ein einziges Mal verliebt in ihrem Leben, nämlich in diesen Mann und seither wisse sie, dass Verliebtsein nichts bedeute, aber Liebe bedeute viel. – Niemals in einem nüchternen Zustand hätte Maria so zu ihrer Tochter gesprochen“ (S. 37)Einige Zeit später wird Maria erneut schwanger und das gesamte Dorf beginnt zu rechnen, ob Josef überhaupt der Vater sein kann, da seine Urlaube von der Front sehr kurz waren, oder ob nicht viel eher der Fremde aus Deutschland der Vater sein könnte. Maria gebärt schließlich ein Mädchen – Margarethe, kurz Grete genannt – die einmal Monika Helfers Mutter werden wird und die Josef angeblich nie angesehen oder angesprochen habe. Nach Grete folgen noch zwei weitere Kinder.In Monika Helfers Rekonstruktion ihrer Familiengeschichte geht es aber nicht nur um ein vermeintliches Familiengeheimnis, in dessen Mittelpunkt die Frage nach der Vaterschaft von Grete steht, sondern auch darum, wie sich Maria und die restliche Familie in Josefs Abwesenheit durchsetzen müssen. Durchsetzen gegen ein Dorf, in dem einstige Verbündete zu einer Bedrohung werden, so dass die Kinder, besonders Lorenz, plötzlich und auch mit einem gewissen Selbstverständnis, die Rolle seines Vaters einnimmt und so zum Beschützer und Versorger wird. Es zeigt, was Erwachsenwerden in einer solch hierarchisch geprägten Umgebung bedeutet. Aber auch, welchen Stand eine Frau hat, die nicht den Konventionen entspricht, wodurch wiederum die Doppelmoral der Kirche und der Menschen entlarvt wird.Auf gerade einmal 160 Seiten rekonstruiert Monika Helfer die Geschichte ihrer Familie. Es ist eine Mischung aus Biografie und Leerstellen, die Helfer mittels eigener Vorstellungskraft, Fantasie und sicher auch Empathie für ihre eigene Herkunft füllt. Dabei entsteht nicht der Eindruck, dass sie Dinge verklärt, sondern im Gegenteil, es führt dem Leser einmal mehr vor Augen, wie traurig und auch wie komplex und verstrickt das Netz der Menschen sein kann, die wir unsere Familie nennen.Monika Helfers „Die Bagage“ erhält meine ausgesprochene Empfehlung und ich möchte meine Rezension mit folgendem Zitat von Leo Tolstoi beenden: „Glückliche Familien sind alle gleich, jede unglückliche Familie ist auf ihre eigene Weise unglücklich.“ This is a public episode. Irgendwie sind wohl Ostwochen im Studio B. In meiner letzten Rezension in diesem Newsletter, es ging um das hervorragenden "Gittersee" von Charlotte Gneuß, war ich voll des Lobes ob der präzis wiedergegebenen Sprache, die man hierzulande sprach, bis wir alle "unter der Woche" und "zwischen den Jahren" zu sagen lernten, um unseren neuen Overlords zu gefallen und unsere Chance auf eine D-Mark-Lohnerhöhung zu erhöhen. Irmgard Lumpini fing kurze Zeit später an (ostalgieinfiziert?) "Das Narrenschiff" zu lesen, das jüngste Buch von Christoph Hein, und berichtete seltsame Dinge: Die Sprache sei "DDR-Sprech", spoilerte die Kollegin. Nun, Heins Sprache war nie ausschweifend oder gar romantisch, das gaben seine Helden nicht her, aber als ausgesprochen "ostdeutsch" geschrieben empfand ich seine Werke nie. Was also war passiert? Ja, Christoph Hein, Jahrgang 44, ist ein "ostdeutscher" Schriftsteller, ein "DDR-Kenner" gar, sagt der Klappentext, wobei man sich fragt, ob denn dann jeder westdeutsche Schriftsteller ein "BRD-Kenner" sei. Egal, ich wurde seltsamerweise Fan und zwar mit seinem Erstling "Der fremde Freund" und das im zarten Teenageralter von 12 Jahren, obwohl ich doch damals literarisch zwischen Andromeda und Kassiopeia lebte. Ein paar Jahrzehnte später, genauer: mehr als vier, war ich wieder interessiert, war doch das neueste Buch von Hein erschienen, und dessen Sujet, die Zeit um den Mauerbau herum, aus der Sicht eines Abiturienten irgendwie faszinierend, wenn auch literarisch eher so lala, ich berichtete. Ging es in “Unterm Staub der Zeit” noch um einen recht kleinen Zeitraum in der Geschichte der DDR, sollte es in "Das Narrenschiff" um des ostdeutschen Staats gesamten Existenzraum, von der Idee bis zum Scheitern ihrer Manifestation gehen. Warum nicht, machte ich mir ob der 750 Seiten Mut, Geschichte muss nicht immer Cromwell sein, lasst zur Abwechslung mal Zeitzeugen sprechen. Ich ging rein.Der Roman beschreibt die Geschichte der DDR von ihrer Planung in den Vierzigern im Moskauer Exil bis zu ihrer endgültigen Beendigung mit der Währungsunion im Sommer 1990. Das passiert über die Beschreibung der Leben eines Dutzend Personen, die, familiär oder zufällig, intergenerational miteinander zu tun haben, deren Wege sich treffen und verlieren. Ein "Roots" für Zonis gewissermaßen.Nun tu ich mich, gesegnet mit der Gnade der Geburt in eine minuscule Familie (1x Eltern, 1x Bruder, 1x Großeltern, Tante+Cousine) traditionell schwer mit der Zuordnung von so komplexen Entitäten wie Nichten, Neffen, Schwägern oder gar Schwippschwägern und war leicht besorgt, ob ich den Familienbäumen folgen kann. Aber da war der Real Existierende Sozialismus vor, der die DDR nach nur 40 Jahren im Schlaf erstickte. Das war nicht genug Zeit für eine komplexe Genealogie der Bewohner der 15 Bezirke. Ich konnte folgen.Wir beginnen mit einem Blick auf die Gründer der Republik, wie sie in den letzten Zügen des 2. Weltkrieges aus Moskau eingeflogen werden, wobei es schon dort Gewinner und Verlierer gab; beim Aufbau des sozialistischen deutschen Staates sollte von Anfang nichts schief gehen, da wirst Du nicht berücksichtigt, wenn Du die kleinste Abweichung von der Parteilinie gucken lässt. Alles Männer, klar. Von der anderen Seite, geographisch wie geschlechtlich, werden in den ersten Seiten des Buches Frauen eingeführt, die ihren Mann respektive Vater während des Krieges verloren haben, wenn auch nicht unbedingt so wie man denkt. Denn Katinka ist eine Halbwaise und lebt mit ihrer Mutter Yvonne allein im zerbombten Berlin, nicht weil der Papa vor Stalingrad den gerechten Heldentod fand, sondern weil er ein Jude war und ihm die Flucht nicht gelang. Ein paar Kapitel im Buch sitzt sie neben Wilhelm Pieck, dem ersten Präsidenten der DDR, weil sie Klassenbeste ist. Damit ist sie vom Alter her prädestiniert, die DDR von Anfang bis Ende zu durchleben und uns das gesamte Buch hindurch zu begleiten. Um sie herum werden sich Personen tummeln, die einige prototypische Biographien des Landes repräsentieren, den strammen Funktionär, den Hinterfragenden, den Idealisten, die Karrieristin. Ab und an begegnen einem Personen, die wir als "Berühmtheiten" zu erkennen meinen, Stasi-Abwehrchef Markus Wolf definitiv (im Buch Fuchs) und auch der Anwalt und Unterhändler Wolfgang Vogel als Kuckuck ist wohl zu erkennen. Gemeinsam ist (fast) allen, dass sie der Nomenklatura angehören: selten in höchsten Sphären schweben, aber nie Fußvolk sind. Das werte ich nicht, das Buch ist mit seinen 750 Seiten für eine Biographie eines ganzen Landes sicher nicht sehr lang, aber was die Lern- und Lesebereitschaft eines potentiellen Publikums betrifft eher am dicken Ende des Spektrums und da die Geschichte eines Landes erzählt werden soll, welches vom Anfang bis kurz vor seinem Ende ausschließlich Top-Down organisiert war, macht es irgendwie Sinn, sich in die Innenleben der dem Staat ideell Verpflichteten zu begeben. Den Opfern der DDR wurde in den letzten Jahren ausgiebig Platz und Stimme gegeben, da ist es ok, einmal unapologetisch die andere Seite der Story zu lesen.Das heißt nicht, dass man viel Neues lernt (wenn man aus dem Landstrich kommt), weder was die Fakten noch die Innenansichten der Protagonistinnen betrifft, da bleibt sich Christoph Hein treu. Verschlossen, manchmal fast autistisch sind oft seine Romanhelden und auch auf dem "Narrenschiff", im Buch wie dem diesen Namen gegebenen Land, lebte man unabhängig von der gesellschaftlichen Schicht, jeder in seiner Bubble, dort wo man safe war. Der Blick ging zum Nachbarn, nicht um Kontakt herzustellen, sondern um die Gefahr abzuschätzen, die von ihm ausgeht. Diese lauerten, wie in jeder Hierarchie, von oben wie von unten und nur mit moralischer Flexibilität war es möglich, sich ein so angenehmes Leben in der rationierten Welt der DDR zu machen, wie es die Menschen, die wir begleiten, führen. Explizite Kritik daran darf man vom Buch nicht erwarten, Verfolgte des Regimes kommen nicht vor, aber wie gesagt, ich sehe das nicht kritisch, nicht jedes Buch muss jede Seite beleuchten. Ich als Leser entwickle eher Mitleid mit der grauen, unglücklichen Existenz der Akteure. Bis zum Bau der Mauer getraut sich keiner eine Perspektive zu haben und danach war sie zugestellt. Bitter.Die Flussgeschwindigkeit des Buchs ist hoch, wir durchlaufen die DDR in Höchstgeschwindigkeit. Zwischen manchen Kapiteln werden ganze Jahre übersprungen, was auch eine Aussage ist: es war nicht viel los in der Zone. Was los war, geschieht im Hintergrund von Episoden des Privaten der Akteure: Liebschaften, Karrierebrüche, Kinderkriegen, Sterben geben Anlass, wie nebenbei zu erzählen, was in der DDR und, seltener, der Welt gerade geschieht: 17. Juni, Prager Frühling, NATO-Osterweiterung, Mauerfall. Die Erzählweise dieser Episoden erinnern ein wenig an Alexander Kluge in seiner epochalen "Chronik der Gefühle", wenn man es wohlwollend betrachtet; an eine Aneinanderreihung von Schulaufsätzen, wenn man garstig ist. Die Sprache ist wohlwollend "ungekünstelt" und böswollend "unkünstlerisch". Nun ist Christoph Hein ein Künstler und das Buch bei Suhrkamp erschienen, also muss die Plattheit der Dialoge, das Einheitssozialistisch der Beschreibungen Methode sein. Aber so steif , Herr Hein? Ein Jugendlicher studiert in einer fast ausschließlich weiblichen Studiengruppe, was in diesem Satz zusammengefasst wird:In seiner Seminargruppe war er der einzige männliche Student, was ihn zum Hahn im Korb machte. Der Mittelpunkt in einem Pulk gleichaltriger Mädchen zu sein, gefiel ihm, und er genoss es sehr, von allen jungen Frauen umschwärmt zu werden und mit der einen und anderen sogar ein intimes Verhältnis zu haben.Es wimmelt in Charakterbeschreibungen von DDR-Zeugnisworten wie "wissbegierig", "umsichtig" und "verantwortungsvoll" und zwar nicht eingestreut, sondern in der vollen realsozialistischen Breitseite. Hein beschreibt die Entwicklung eines Kindes in der Schule mit:Er war bei dieser Beschäftigung [dem Werken] sehr geschickt und einfallsreich, lernte aufgeschlossen und wissbegierig alle Techniken, die der Lehrer den Kindern beibrachte.Ein schwuler Mann sagt zu seinem Freund nach dem Abendessen:Du bist ein Weltmeister der kulinarischen Improvisationen, ein Held des Herds.Seriously? Nun konnte ich Charlotte Gneuß bestätigen, dass man in der DDR oder mindestens in Gittersee exakt die Worte verwendete, die sie ihren Protagonisten in den Mund legt. Da ich mich nicht in den Kreisen der DDR-Nomenklatura bewegte, kann ich Christoph Hein diese Bestätigung nicht geben, vielleicht sprach man in Parteisekretariatsfamilien am Abendbrottisch wie Honni beim 8. Parteitag, aber ich kann das nicht wirklich glauben. Und selbst wenn es so war, muss man dann den ganzen Roman in diesem Stil schreiben? Das über 750 Seiten durchzuhalten ist zweifellos beeindruckend, und ich bin nicht sicher, ob ich das Kompliment hier dem Schriftsteller oder dem Leser mache.Kurzum: Wenn man kein traumatisierter Verfolgter des SED-Regimes ist, der beim Lesen von Büchern, die klingen wie die Anklageschrift, wegen der sie in Bautzen saß, PTSD bekommt, sollte man „Das Narrenschiff“ angehen, vielleicht mit ein wenig Wohlwollen und Offenheit der absurden Sprache gegenüber. So wie einen der Brutalismus einer tschechischen Kleinstadt ästhetisch nicht sofort begeistert, es einen aber irgendwie doch kriegt, so ist der Blick auf 40 Jahre DDR, den das Narrenschiff über zwei Buchlängen in reinem DDR-Deutsch liefert, den Aufwand wert, meine ich, hoffe ich. Und wünsche mir und Christoph Hein im nächsten Buch eine Rückkehr zu seiner eigenen Sprache. This is a public episode. "Wahrhaftigkeit" ist nicht mein erstes Kriterium beim Lesen eines Buches. Im Gegenteil, mit allzu viel Sinn für das Mögliche wäre Harry Potter ein sinnloser Streber in Eton gewesen statt eines mäßig begabten Zauberlehrlings in Gryffindor und Drogon eine überdimensionierte Echse in den Sümpfen um Venedig statt ein feuerspeiender Drache über Braavos. Langweilig.Bei Romanen, die etwas realere Begebenheiten abbilden hingegen, sagen wir, das Leben in der DDR, weiß ich es zu schätzen, wenn die Autorin oder der Autor, wenn sie schon nicht die Begebenheiten 1:1 abbildet, dann doch die Gefühle, die in der Luft lagen, die Erlebnisse, die die Protagonisten geprägt haben, exakt wiedergeben, statt sich eine retrospektive Idylle zu bauen. Looking at you, Uwe Tellkamp. Dessen absurder Roman "Der Turm", den zu lesen uns das westdeutsche Kleinbürgertum im Jahr 2008 auftrug, weil sie endlich einen Ossi gefunden hatten, der sie nicht verabscheute, hielt ich jahrelang für den Grund, dass ich einen weiten, weiten Bogen um jeglichen "Wenderoman" machte. Dabei entgingen mir Werke wie "89/90" von Peter Richter und sogar das immens lustige "Vom Ende des Punks in Helsinki" von Jaroslav Rudiš. Das muss ich nun alles nachholen. Denn, wie ich seit der Lektüre von Charlotte Gneuß' "Gittersee" weiß, kann man über eine Zeit, die man selbst kind of erlebt hat, lesen, ohne mit dem Kopf zu schütteln. Es war wohl immer nur dieser auch hier im Studio B saftig verrissene "Turm", der mir die Retrospektive versauerte. Und natürlich die in den Neunzigern prävalente Ostalgie mit ihren Superillus und MDR-Talkshows und dem ständigen Gejammer der angeblich Abgehängten, von denen man genau die gleiche direkte Linie zu einer AfD-tolerierten Landesregierung ziehen kann, wie vom rechtsradikalen Uwe Tellkamp.Unter einer ebensolchen präfaschistischen Konstellation lebt man heute (Danke, Uwe!), wenn man in Gittersee wohnt, einem Vorort von Dresden, welches wiederum der Geburtsort des Literaturpodcast und -newsletter "Lob & Verriss" ist. Ich weiß also, wovon ich lese, wenn dieses Städtchen im gleichnamigen Roman von Charlotte Gneuß Schauplatz einer wahrhaftigen Begebenheit in tiefen, tiefen DDR-Zeiten ist. Dabei spielt es kaum eine Rolle, dass Gittersee, obwohl von meiner Hood nur fünf Kilometer entfernt, für mich damals, in den 80ern, auf dem Mond lag. Denn der Mond lag in der gleichen DDR und dort waren die Verhältnisse überall dieselben, außer vielleicht in Berlin und von dem haben wir in Dresden-Löbtau genauso geschwärmt wie Karin und Marie in Gittersee.Das tun die beiden Sechzehnjährigen im Jahr 1976 hauptsächlich auf der Stein-Tischtennisplatte vor der Schule und langweilen sich dabei ein bisschen. Es liegt sich nicht sonderlich bequem auf dem heißen Beton, schon gar nicht im beginnenden Sommer. "Unbequem" ist für Karin in diesem seltsamen Ort Gittersee ohnehin irgendwie alles. Wir reden hier nicht von der Unbequemlichkeit, die ein Teenager in 2025 erlebt, dessen tägliches Internetkontingent schon um 16:30 Uhr aufgebraucht ist. Wir reden von dieser seltsamen Langeweile, vor der Langeweile, die es nur im Osten gab, mit zwei TV-Programmen, zu wenig Brause im Sommer, zu schweren Fußbällen auf unbeschatteten Hartplätzen, wenn man ein Junge war und Klamottenproblemen, seltsam riechenden Haarsprays und Jungs in Kutten als Mädchen. Für Karin beginnen damit aber nur die Schwierigkeiten. Ihre spätgeborene kleine Schwester im Krippenalter muss bespaßt werden, denn ihre Mutter ist abwesend. Zunächst noch nicht körperlich, aber wenn sie abgekämpft abends nach Hause kommt, hat sie keinen Nerv für den Balg. Da kann Karin "die Kleine" noch so abgöttisch lieben, eine Sechzehnjährige hat andere Sachen im Kopf. Zum Beispiel ihre erste Liebe Paul, 17, der sie spontan bittet, mit in die Tschechei zu fahren, sächsisch für die CSSR, von Gittersee nur eine Stunde mit dem Moped entfernt, zum Biertrinken, Klettern und Rummachen. Irgendwas ist seltsam an der Bitte, so kurzfristig am Freitagnachmittag, wie stellt er sich das vor, drei Tage boofen und schwoofen, pardon my sächsisch, das erlaubt Vati nie. Mutti ist es eher egal. Seltsam ist: Paul hat für Ostverhältnisse utopisch viel Geld dabei, 600 Mark. Um Kletterzeugs zu kaufen in der Tschechei, sagt er. Klingt fast plausibel.Natürlich darf Karin nicht mit, Paul und sein Kumpel Rühle fahren los und nur einer kommt zurück. Ein paar Stunden später stehen die Behörden vor der Tür: “Was wusste Karin von der Republikflucht ihres Schwarms?”Hier beginnt eine Odyssee durch einen Sommer, es ist der Sommer '76, wird bald klar, durch einen Ozean von Teenagergefühlen, durch den Schlund, den die Stasi jedem unter die Füße stellte, den sie für vulnerabel hielt. Nichts, was eine 16-Jährige aus einem Dorf fest in Stasihand auch nur ansatzweise managen kann.Ich habe exakt fünf Kilometer von Karin entfernt gebebbelt. Unser beider Hinterhöfe waren wiederum jeweils fünf Kilometer vom Dresdner Hauptbahnhof entfernt, der, auf dem 13 Jahre nach der Romanzeit die Leute auf fahrende Züge von Prag in den Westen aufspringen wollten. Der Unterschied in diesem Ostdreieck war, dass vor meiner Haustür die Straßenbahnlinie 7 in zehn Minuten zum Hauptbahnhof fuhr, vor Karins Tür fuhr noch nicht mal ein Bus. Warum das für die Volkswirtschaft der DDR, oder sind wir ehrlich, der UdSSR, so wichtige Dorf von der Großstadt abgeschnitten war, wird klar, wenn man weiß, dass dort Uran abgebaut wurde. Dafür brauchte man Bergarbeiter, aber die sollten sich nicht unbedingt mit dem Volk verschmischen, also stellte man ihnen ein paar Platten hin und einen Konsum und eine Kneipe und ließ das Dorf Gittersee nicht zur Vorstadt von Dresden werden.Die Wahrhaftigkeit im Roman entsteht durch Charlotte Gneuß' Sprache. Zum Beispiel hat kein Kind über fünf im Osten "Mama und Papa" gesagt. "Mutti und Vati" war der Kompromiss zwischen Zuneigung und Respekt, der die Kindheit zur Jugend machte. Ein Fahrrad wurde "ab-" nicht "an-" geschlossen und man erinnert das erst, wenn man es nach Jahrzehnten wieder liest. Es geht hier nicht um Lokalkolorit, es geht um die Exaktheit in der Sprache, die es braucht, um ein wahrhaftiges Bild einer Zeit und eines Lebens zu erzeugen, völlig wertungsfrei. Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass das in extrazonalen Ohren possierlich oder sozialistisch klingt, je nach Vorurteil, aber ich habe das Privileg bestätigen zu können, dass hier handwerklich genau gearbeitet wurde. Damit erarbeitet sich der Roman eine Ehrlichkeit, die er braucht, wenn er von der Zustandsbeschreibung des real existierenden Sozialismus zur "realen Fiktion" kommt. Hier: wie die Stasi versucht, die sechzehnjährige Karin zur Informantin, zum IM, zu machen. So psychologisch perfide wie geschickt arbeitet sich die Staatsmacht, "der Apparat", an der gerade von ihrer ersten großen Liebe verlassenen Jugendlichen ab, es bricht einem das Herz beim Lesen. Ob es gelingt, überlassen wir der Leserin. Ich im gleichen Alter wie Karin war pre-89 natürlich der Meinung, dass ich die Schergen aus der Tür gelacht habe, denn ich hatte, ganz der Rebell, zur NVA-Musterung einen P.I.L. Sticker an meinem FDJ-Hemd zur Musterung, ey! Und post-89 spielte es keine Rolle mehr, es gab Techno und Drogen und die Gewissheit, dass man ein standhafter Oppositioneller gewesen war. Es brauchte 35 Jahre, um mir wieder Zweifel an der eigenen Heldengeschichte einzuimpfen und allein dafür gebührt "Gittersee" jede Lobpreisung.Das Buch hätte natürlich im Jahr 1991 von einem der ehemaligen IMs geschrieben werden und erscheinen müssen, von jemandem, der in der gleichen Position war wie die Protagonistin. Aber das ging nicht. Nicht weil es unter denen keinen gegeben hätte, der das genauso präzise und wahrhaftig hätte beschreiben können wie Charlotte Gneuß, who knows, unter den Hunderttausenden hätte es sicher Talente gegeben, looking at you Sascha Anderson, sondern weil eine wahre Story einer Autorin wie der Protagonistin die gesellschaftliche Vernichtung durch Spiegel und BILD bedeutet hätte. So muss es ein paar Jahrzehnte später eine “wahrhaftige” Geschichte tun, statt einer wahren, geschrieben von einer Spätgeborenen. Vielleicht etwas zu spät, um aus dem Überleben in der vergangenen Diktatur zu lernen, für die kommende gerade richtig. Mit dem Vorteil, dass die Freiheit der Fiktion aus einer schnöden Lifestory einen durchaus dramaturgisch spannenden Roman, fast einen Krimi, macht. Und da man eine Autorin wie Charlotte Gneuß, Jahrgang 1992, schwerlich des Mitläufer- oder gar Tätertums in der DDR bezichtigen kann, versuchte das deutsche Feuilleton uns zu erklären, dass so jemand ja schwerlich einen Roman schreiben kann, der das Leben in der DDR realistisch wiedergibt, nur weil ihre brutale Erzählung den "Heile-Welt-Uwe-Tellkamp-Fanboys and -girls" in den FAZ u.ä. Redaktionsstuben das Lesevergnügen versaut.Denn insgesamt ist Gittersee eine beeindruckende Erinnerung daran, dass die DDR nicht nur Poliklinik und Rechtsabbiegerpfeil war. Dass die Legende von der Solidarität, dem achso happy Leben in den Brigaden, dem vertrauensvollen und hilfsbereiten Zusammenleben, exakt das war: eine Legende. Dass die DDR vornehmlich ein Gefängnis war, welches die Leute, die darin eingesperrt waren, gegeneinander auf- und um den Verstand gebracht hat, in den Wahnsinn trieb. Und eine Erinnerung daran, dass Gefängnisse nicht nur Wärter brauchen, sondern auch Capos, und wie man zu keinem solchen wird, ist eine Weisheit, die auch heute nicht unnütz ist.
