From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.Happy Homegrown! It's that time of the year when, for eight days, local music reigns in Duluth and Superior. The Homegrown Music Festival continues through Sunday. Emily Lee of Duluth is attending Homegrown for her twelfth year, and like many music lovers, she's studied up on the Field Guide to make sure she can see her favorite bands. Check out the schedule here.Emily says: I'm going to see [Blues-rock band] The Adjustments Saturday night. Strikepoint is playing this year, which is kind of unique. They're an amazing handle choir here in town. My husband can't wait to see Bratwurst, and you have to watch out at that show, because Bratwurst throws raw meat off the stage. So a lot of people show up in ponchos.Something new this year is the Homegrown Variety Showcase on Friday night at Studio Four, and it's kind of like a variety talent show with poets, comedians and dancers. So that's something cool this year to check out. There's also different dress up nice each week for Homegrown, so that's kind of fun to see what everyone wears. Tonight is Eccentric Art Teacher & Gym Coach Night. Friday is Leather & Lace Night. Saturday is Pirates & Princesses Night. Sunday is Relaxation Sunday; they have a couple of daytime shows on Sunday because that's the last day of the festival.— Emily LeeNative stories on screenActor Silvestrey P'orantes of Minneapolis highly recommends checking out “Framed Differently,” an evening of four short films by local Native filmmakers with a Q&A to follow. Hosted by Sequoia Hauck, the event is Saturday, May 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Public Functionary's Main Gallery 144 in Minneapolis. The films are Ajuawak Kapashesit's “The Comedian,” Rosy Simas's “yödoishëndahgwa'geh (a place to rest),” Oogie Push's “Hunting Morels: Mushroom Secrets” and Moira Villiard's animated film “Love Lessons in a Time of Settler Colonialism.”Silvestrey says: [They're] all doing different films about Indigenous perspective outside of just the title of being Indigenous. There's a lot of pressure sometimes to fit into the stereotype of like, well, we got to talk about language and reclamation and what have you. But sometimes, you know, we just want to talk about what we want to talk about. We're really emphasizing that we are artists who have things to say outside of just who we are.— Silvestrey P'orantesYouth strings take the spotlight in MarshallSt. Paul musician Mary Adamek wants people to know about a musical opportunity in Marshall, Minn., this Saturday. Southwest Minnesota StringFest invites string players aged 13–18 to rehearse and perform alongside professional musicians on Saturday, May 3. The event is free and sign-ups are still open for students in Minnesota and southeast South Dakota. The festival culminates in a free concert performance, open to the public, on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Fine Arts Theater of Southwest Minnesota State University.Mary says: The festival is organized and funded through a partnership by three organizations: the St. Joseph School of Music, St. Paul Conservatory of Music, the Southwest Minnesota Orchestra and Southwest Minnesota State University. This is the only string festival available to string students in southwestern Minnesota.— Mary Adamek

Patti Arntz joins Jocelyn for a conversation on today's bonus episode! Patti has been a music educator and church musician in the Twin Cities area for over 40 years. She has degrees in music from Hamline University, St. Paul, MN and Drake University, Des Moines, IA and a Master's Degree in Education from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN. She recently retired from teaching elementary music with the Robbinsdale Area Schools in the Twin Cities area. During her 30 years of instructing young children to sing and make music, she also directed the Robbinsdale All-District Elementary Honors Choir for 15 years. Throughout her teaching career, she served as an organist and director of youth/adult choirs in local churches. In 2003, Patti was contacted by St. Olaf College to see if she would take a student teacher. The answer was yes, of course. That student teacher was Jocelyn Hagen. The favor was returned when Jocelyn served as a mentor for Patti's compositions and arrangements. In 2010, Patti commissioned Jocelyn to compose a children's choir piece in memory of Teresa Benjamin, Assistant Director of the Robbinsdale Elementary Honor Choir. Teresa passed away in the spring of 2003. This composition, “I Started Out Singing,” has become very popular in recent years. Keeping in touch with her elementary music roots, she serves as an adjunct professor at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minnesota, instructing elementary education majors on teaching and integrating music into their future classrooms. Patti lives in the Twin Cities area with her husband, Rolland, where she enjoys outdoor activities, traveling and cooking. She sings with Singers in Accord and is a charter member of the choir. Her adult children, Kyle and Melani are both very involved in music in the Twin Cities area. Charitable giving is one of our favorite financial topics; during this time of year, it seems to be on people's minds more. Many of our clients here at Summit Wealth Group are charitably inclined, as evidenced by the spike in requests we see annually, to redeem investments toward the end of each calendar year so that they can give to their church or other favorite charity. The problem is most people don't know that instead of simply writing a check to a charity, there may be more tax-advantageous ways to give, which preserves more of the donor's wealth which, in turn, could be used down the road for additional philanthropic causes. Listen to hear Dave Noland and Stephanie Brinkman discuss some tax advantageous ways you can give. Hosts:Dave Noland, CFP®, CRPSTM | Financial AdvisorDave's career in the Financial Services industry began in 2000, working part-time at a large national commercial bank while pursuing his degree in Finance from Arizona State University. Upon graduation in 2002, Dave took a position with a credit union with a more client-focused approach than the big bank he'd previously worked for.In the summer of 2011, after holding various branch-level positions with the credit union ranging from Personal Banker to Branch Manager, Dave decided it was time to pursue his true professional passion: financial planning. He left the banking world and joined the investment industry as a broker for a large wirehouse firm. Within a few years, he'd completed all requirements to obtain the CFP® certification and moved into an advisory position with the same firm. Dave has been blessed with the privilege of managing his client portfolios since early 2016, first with the large wirehouse firm and, more recently, with Summit Wealth Group. Dave was impressed with how Summit treated clients and staff like family and not like faceless names or numbers. With Summit, Dave partners with his clients to pursue their dreams by getting to know and understand their needs, wants, and wishes, along with the concerns and fears that may keep them up at night. With this knowledge, Dave can craft a tailored plan designed to give them the confidence to successfully realize their goals. He feels most fulfilled in his work as he sees these dreams become a reality over time. I've been blessed to have grown up around some hammers on the mat, and Brian Rodas was certainly one of them. Brian wrestled at MFL MarMac High School, where he was consistently one of the top guys in the state at 215 and heavyweight. However, his road to state always seemed to go through kids who ended up either at or near the top of the podium at the state tournament. Brian finally qualified for state his senior year, where he finished runner-up to Blake Rasing of New Hampton. Remember that name. Brian also starred on the football field and went on to both wrestle and play football at Southwest Minnesota State University. He now is an assistant coach at Minneota High School, one of the top Class A programs in Minnesota. So sit back, relax and enjoy, Brian Rodas!

As an Investment Adviser Representative of Commonwealth Financial Network®, he wants to:Help determine an appropriate strategy for investing that helps each client achieve the things in life that he or she desires so that each can experience more true wealthEncourage clients to delegate the day-to-day management of their investments to him, so they can follow their passions and focus on what's important to themTrack the progress they are making toward their financial goals and update them regularlyDave and his wife were trained several years ago through Larry Burkett's Christian Financial Concepts (now Crown Financial Ministries) to be family budget and debt counselors. For many years, they did this as an avocation, never taking a dime for their services. Dave developed a heart for helping people get their "financial house" in order and decided to become a full-time investment advisor in 1994. He still has the same motivation today that drew him into financial consulting in the first place: "to help clients experience peace and purpose with their finances." He has expanded his planning process to include True Wealth planning. True Wealth planning builds upon the financial planning model, but it adds one additional critical step—helping you pair your assets with your life's purpose. This may sound like a high and mighty ideal, but this is the additional critical step that is so often missing in financial planning. Jason and Matthew talk with Samantha Troyer, an SCI peer mentor in Wisconsin who joined up with U2FP's Cure Advocacy Network (CAN) to become a legislative advocate there. Sam is joined by our CAN Manager, Jake Beckstrom. We talk about the current effort to pass an SCI research funding Bill in Wisconsin, its attendant ups and downs, unique challenges, the perseverance required for this work, and the power of our shared SCI story. We wanted to give you an inside look at our advocacy efforts, in a state where we have a bill in play right now. This work to pass SCI funding at the state level is difficult and satisfying, as you'll hear. These SCI research funding bills are especially unique in that they require our community's voice at the table where funding decisions are made. And right now, we need your voice more than ever in Wisconsin. Consider writing a letter of support for our bill, or showing up in person at the Wisconsin capital to testify (more info here: https://u2fp.org/get-educated/our-voice.html/article/2022/03/17/can-i-get-a-witness-). Let's help our advocates in Wisconsin get this thing done. --- Samantha Troyer is a grateful to have survived a deadly car accident 15 years ago, even though she came back a quadriplegic. After her spinal cord injury (C1/2) and rehab at the Froedtert Medical College of Wisconsin, Sam decided to become an SCI peer mentor there. Sam wanted to help share the strength she learned from surviving trauma on to others who have suffered an SCI. This work as an SCI peer mentor motivated Sam to find more ways to advocate for a better future for members of the SCI Community - which is why she joined U2FP's Wisconsin CAN in their push to pass an SCI research funding bill there. Working to improve the quality of life for herself and others with an SCI maximizes her gratitude for life and minimizes the pain I endure daily. Sam knows that some people view a quadriplegic brimming with gratitude as ‘weird', but that's ok. Heck, she thinks it's awesome she's sometimes seen as weird. Sam believes she was born weird and that she is doing what she was meant to do. IG @midcoast_shutterbug Jake Beckstrom is from Watertown, Minnesota. At the age of 16, Jake had a diving accident in a backyard pool and sustained a C4-6 spinal cord injury. A lifelong love of hunting, fishing, and the outdoors led him to pursue a path of environmental sustainability. He received a B.S. in Environmental Science at Southwest Minnesota State University, and in 2015, he received a law degree and master's degree in Environmental Law and Policy at Vermont Law School. Jake is eager to use his experience in public policy and advocacy to work with the Cure Advocacy Network to lobby for smarter spinal cord injury research funding and find a cure for paralysis.
The fact that millennials are earning less than their parents did at their age isn't a secret, but did you know it's 20% less? Millennials have accrued only half the net worth that their parents had by their age. If this concerns you then you're going to want to hear what you can do to help close that gap. The East Side Freedom Library invites you to a presentation by Dr. Chris Mato Nunpa, The Great Evil: Christianity, The Bible, and the Native American Genocide. In this account of the history between Indigenous Peoples and the United States government, readers learn the role the bible played in the perpetration of genocide, massive land theft, and the religious suppression and criminalization of Native ceremonies and spirituality. Chris Mato Nunpa, a Dakota man, discusses this dishonorable and darker side of American history that is rarely studied, if at all. Out of a number of rationales used to justify the killing of Native Peoples and theft of their lands, the author emphasizes the role of a biblical rationale, including the “chosen people” idea, the “promised land” notion, and the genocidal commands of the Old Testament God. Mato Nunpa's experience with fundamentalist and evangelical missionaries when he was growing up, his studies in Indigenous Nations history at the University of Minnesota, and his affiliation with the International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) were three important factors in his motivation for writing this book. Chris Mato Nunpa, Ph.D is a former Associate Professor of Indigenous Nations & Dakota Studies at Southwest Minnesota State University. Professor Mato Nunpa holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus, with the Collateral Field for the Ph.D. in American Indian Studies. He also studied theology at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, Evanston, Illinois. Dr. Chris Mato Nunpa is a Wahpetunwan (“Dwellers In The Leaves,” or Wahpeton) Dakota from the Pezihuta Zizi Otunwe, “Yellow Medicine Community” (BIA name, Upper Sioux Community), in southwestern Minnesota. Shout out to Marcus Brissman over in the Sporadically Board Facebook Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/510403706050913/ - who put up an excellent, interesting thread on cheating in board games a few weeks ago. In response, Jason reached out to a blogger on BGG who wrote about cheating in board games a few years ago, Dr. Corey Butler, professor of social psychology at Southwest Minnesota State University. What drives people to cheat? Who cheats? How often does it occur? For those who have cheated, how do they justify their behavior? If you cheat at a solo game and no one sees, does it count as cheating? We attempt to answer these and more questions about the psychological aspects of cheating.
