He just wants to work on the drums all day To commemorate four centuries in business, the Zildjian cymbal company commissioned Aaron Latos to build 400 snare drums from the same alloy that goes into their rides, crashes and high hats - staple elements of a jazz or rock drum set. Recipients include Sheila E., drummer's drummer Steve Gadd (Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover") and tatted celebrity Travis Barker of Blink 182 (who survived a plane crash and dated Kim Kardashian). The anniversary passed in 2023 and Latos, who moved last year to Beacon with his wife and two young children, is 10 units shy of fulfilling the order. In the meantime, he's trying to perfect the manufacturing process for his own line of snares, tom-toms and bass drums crafted from nickel silver, which he assembles nearly from scratch in his Newburgh shop. Only the washers and tension rods clamping down the hoops that tune and tighten the drumheads are machined off-premises. By year's end, he plans to move the lathes, drills and rollers to a space in Beacon double the size of his current spot. Latos, 36, hails from West Virginia and made a living drumming in recording sessions and touring with country singer Margo Price. He performs around town with the Stephen Clair Band and takes on select students and studio projects. Drummers are notoriously picky about their gear and setup. Drum and cymbal angles must hit every time. Some prefer wood over metal snares. Others argue over tuning techniques. Every cymbal sounds different and comes in myriad shapes and sizes. Latos is so detail-oriented that he patented a snare drum throw-off system, the mechanism that lifts and holds down the coiled snare wires that add snap to the two and four beat of nearly every pop and rock song. His patent for the butt plate, which anchors the snares, is pending. "I'd have more patents, but they're expensive," he says. As far as he knows, Latos is the first to make nickel steel drums. He digs the sound, but the manufacturing process is like wrestling an alligator and presents "the most annoying and frustrating fabrication characteristics" that are "difficult to cut and work." The raw material arrives in long, flat sheets, like the plies of wood used in most drums. Labor consists of rolling, shearing and brazing them together. His loud, hefty snare drums pay homage to models used by big band jazz drummers in the 1920s and '30s designed to cut through 17-piece outfits in the days before specialized microphones. Weighty shells for his floor and rack toms are capped by silvery stainless steel and solid brass copper-colored hoops. Bass drums come with brown wood hoops. The end results are so striking that each piece looks like a sculpture. A basic snare costs $2,000 and a full drum kit starts at $10,000. Customers range from doctors and lawyers to pros, including Bob Meyer, a jazz cat and early adopter, Jeremiah Green of Modest Mouse (who died in 2023) and Harvey Sorgen, who has played with Hot Tuna, Derek Trucks and Paul Simon. Latos' workshop is relatively tidy, although gold and silver shavings litter the floor, including the rug in the cozy corner with a couch, turntable and pile of vinyl records capped by Mel Torme, Chuck Mangione and Haitian group Bossa Combo discs. "Every 22 minutes or so, I come over and flip the record," he says. "It helps me focus on what I am doing and what I should be doing." Latos Drums is located at 11 Spring St. in Newburgh and at latosdrums.com.

In Lee's own words: I was born and raised in Concord, NC.  Just Northeast of Charlottle, it was a town of 25,000 back then.  As long as I can remember, music was around.  Whether it be the turntables or 8 tracks; where my older brothers played rock and roll of the 60s & 70s, Dad listened to older country artists or Mom's Pontiac Bonneville, which seemed to always have the hits playing through it's car stereo from either 61AM Big Ways, 95FM WROQ or 1100 WBT-AM…Music was always a comforting companion.       Not coming from a particularly musical family other than them playing the radio, the drum bug came from the next door neighbor playing and then taking it from there.  I was playing with records by 8-9 years old; began school band in 7th grade with the natural progression through high school playing in marching, jazz and symphonic bands throughout.       Since music was not viewed in my family as something you pursued as a career, I studied English Literature & Writing at Pfeiffer University until my senior year in 1990-91 when long time friend and a musical mentor, Rick Lee, called and said, "I'm forming a new band and you're the drummer."  This was the beginnings of my music career and the 2019 Carolina Beach Music Hall Of Fame band, Too Much Sylvia.       After leaving TMS in 1994, I played with a few different bands out of Charlotte and all around the East Coast through 1996.  In September 1996, a weeklong trip to Nashville, TN put the hook in and I moved to Music City on January 11, 1997.  Fortunately, I got club and road work pretty quickly while learning constantly along the way.  The idea was to make a living while seeing the world and that plan came to fruition over the years backing artists like Gary Allan, Mark Chesnutt, Heidi Newfield, Kelly Pickler, Loverboy, Kendell Marvel and, now, Hank Williams Jr.  Also, to be able to play and share time with some of the finest musicians & people along the way has just been magic. It's a ride I can't get off of...Nor do I want to.      Along with time on the road with Hank Jr., I offer drum/percussion tracks to any clients out of the "Boom Boom Drum Room", do club/showcase/session work around town and spend time caring for my family.  It's never boring and music is STILL a comforting companion.     Hope to see y'all at a show sometime!!   Some Things That Came Up:    -2:00 Moved to Nashville Jan 11, 1997 along with Jim Riley and Pat McDonald  -3:40 Followed the band Sugar Creek, who played on “Star Search” -4:10 Joining the melodic rock band “Too Much Sylvia” right before Nirvana exploded -6:15 Carolina beach music  -7:00 Checked out Nashville in August of 1996. Bill Reichenbach grew up in the Washington, D.C. suburb of Takoma Park, Maryland where he studied trombone with Gene Brusiloff and Robert Isele. After high school, Bill was accepted to the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. There, he studied with the great Emory Remington. While still a student, Bill began his recording career by playing lead trombone on several Chuck Mangione albums, a couple of albums with the Eastman Wind Ensemble (one on bass trombone and another one on euphonium), and the first recording of Leonard Bernstein's “Mass” (on bass trombone) which was composed for the opening of the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.  After graduation, Bill toured for while with the Buddy Rich Big Band on bass trombone. During this time, the band recorded an album called “Stick It” which featured Bill on an arrangement of Jobim's “Wave”.  In 1975, Bill moved to L.A. where he started playing the jazz tenor trombone chair on Toshiko Akiyoshi's big band. He made quite a few albums with the band over the next several years and was a featured soloist on all of them. At the same time, Bill was also the solo jazz trombone player on Don Menza's big band and he recorded solos on an album with the band. Don put together a sextet out of the big band and featured Bill on tenor and bass trombone on a recording with that band.  As a studio player, Bill has played on about 2000 records, 1000 motion pictures, and countless TV shows and jingles.  Bill's jazz quartet album "Special Edition" (Nothing But Bills Records) featuring Peter Erskine on drums, Jimmy Johnson on bass, and Biff Hannon on piano, reached number 10 on the national jazz radio play lists.  New York trombonist Mike Davis and Bill have done 4 albums together - “Bonetown”, “Brass Nation”, "New Brass" and most recently, “Absolute Trombone II” and have played concerts all over the United States, Canada, and Europe.  Bill has been a featured artist and clinician at several International Trombone Festivals including Utrecht (Holland), Nashville, Urbana (Illinois), North Texas State University, and most recently Las Vegas (2007), and Salt Lake City (2023).  Some of the artists Bill has recorded with:  Michael Buble, Harry Connick, Jr., The Jonas Brothers, Christine Aguilera, Seal, Mya, Quincy Jones, Barbra Streisand, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Toto, The Yellowjackets, Seawind, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, David Foster, Aretha Franklin, Al Jarreau, Earth Wind and Fire, Dr. John, Arrowsmith, and Ray Charles.  Some of the motion pictures which Bill has played on are:  “Indiana Jones 5”  "Wolverine"   "Night in the Museum 2"  “Indiana Jones and the Curse of the Crystal Skull”  "Up"  “Sex in the City”  “Hancock”  “Ratatouille”  “Spiderman 3”  “Hairspray” “Dreamgirls”  “Transformers”  “American Gangster” “Wall-E”  “I Am Legend”  “Dreamcatcher”  “X-men II”  “Identity”  “The Core”  “Daredevil”  “Red Dragon  “Chicago”  “Men in Black II”  “XXX”  “Training Day”  “Spiderman”  “Collateral Damage” “Black Hawk Down” “Planet of the Apes” “Monsters, Inc”  “Don't Say a Word” “Zoolander”  “Princess Diaries”  “American Pie 2”  “Legally Blond”  “Scary Movie 2”  “The Mummy Returns” “Evolution”  “What Women Want” “Proof of Life”  "X-men"   "Space Cowboys"  "Remember the Titans"  "Meet the Parents"  "Family Man"   "Charlie's Angels"  “The Matrix”  “The General's Daughter” “The Green Mile”  “South Park”  “Sixth Sense'  “Deep Blue Sea”  “Toy Story 2”  “Magnolia”  “Stuart Little”  “Galaxy Quest' “Reindeer Games”  “U-571”  “Godzilla”  “Contact”  “Conspiracy Theory”  “The Jackal”  “Alien Resurrection”  “Men in Black”  “Air Force One”  “Batman and Robin”  “Forrest Gump”  “Independence Day”  “Mars Attacks”  “Hercules”  “Mission Impossible”  “Batman Returns”  “Twister”  “The Rock”  “Starship Troupers”  “The Frighteners”  “Jurassic Park”  “Nixon”  Bill is an Artist-clinician for the Greenhoe/Shilke Co. Knights of Swing   It's 1947, America is recovering from WWII, and the Civil Rights Movement is still years away.  Big-band swing music is all the rage. Knights of Swing chronicles the adventures of a determined group of high school jazz musicians who recruit their reluctant science and math teacher, Mr. Miller, to help them form a “really swingin' big band.”  Things get complicated at Castle High when school administrators and community leaders object to the band's diversity.  Alliances form and lines are drawn. Through a soul-searching and uplifting journey of forgiveness and unconditional love, Knights of Swing illuminates the power of music.   Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod. (Please Subscribe)
