It is an honor and privilege to welcome singer-songwriter and performer Liv Warfield to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. A former track star and gymnast, Peoria, Illinois-born Liv Warfield began building her legend in Portland, Oregon. Despite having no formal background in singing, she gained the respect of local superstars and became an icon in her own right. While she takes cues from musical influences like Nina Simone, Etta James, Mavis Staples, Sade, Tina Turner, and Mary J. Blige, Warfield has carved out a style all her own, which can best be described as “alternative soul with a lil bit of Rock ‘n' Roll.” In 2006, she self-released her debut album, Embrace Me. By 2009, she caught the eye of the one-and-only Prince and ultimately joined his group, the “New Power Generation.” After touring for several years and soaking up as much knowledge as she could from the ultimate music mentor, Warfield made her big splash on the national scene in 2014, first as a featured artist for VH1's “You Oughta Know” campaign and then with the release of her major label debut album “The Unexpected,” which was executive produced by Prince. What followed were show-stopping performances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show with David Letterman, and The Arsenio Hall Show; a 2014 Soul Train Music Award and nominations for two others; a BET Best New Artist Award nomination; an interview with National Public Radio; and high-profile cosigns from Lionel Richie, Cyndi Lauper, and Nancy Wilson of HEART. That same year, Warfield's performance closing out Essence Fest was hailed as one of the most memorable after-shows at the New Orleans House of Blues. In 2015, the accolades grew, with Warfield and the NPG Hornz being named one of the top 10 bands to see at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. It's no wonder she has left celebrities like Letterman declaring it's time to “cancel show business!” In 2017, Warfield began the next phase of her ascension, collaborating with another of her childhood influences, the aforementioned Nancy Wilson, to create the band Roadcase Royale. Their lead single, “Get Loud,” was featured prominently in the 2017 Women's March, and they released their debut album, First Things First, later that year. If that weren't enough, their remake of HEART's “These Dreams” was featured in Molly's Game, which starred Idris Elba, Jessica Chastain, and Kevin Costner. Warfield recently recorded music for the Oscar-nominated HBO documentary Da Bronx. She also tipped her hat into the theater realm to rave reviews playing Madame ZinZanni in the Chicago version of Teatro ZinZanni. This past summer, Liv Warfield auditioned for the NBC talent competition America's Got Talent: Season 19. Liv and her band performed an original song: “Stare,” that received a standing ovation from not only judges Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, Sofia Vergara, and Simon Cowell but also a Golden Buzzer from the Got Talent creator. During the AGT: Season 19 Quarterfinals, Liv and the band blew the audience away by performing “The Unexpected,” a song Prince wrote for her. In this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Liv Warfield spoke about the lessons she learned from Prince, her time on AGT, and performing in Teatro ZinZanni. Apres The Revolution, et The NPG, voici venu l'ère des 3rd Eye Girl. Today's guest makes me feel like royalty. It's drummer Michael Bland and he has worked with some of the best in the business. But before that, he played in school and found out he had perfect pitch! Finding that out helped solidify his decision to be a musician. But his parents weren't exactly thrilled about the idea and pushed him to have a backup plan. That is, until Prince called the house looking for Michael. This started a trend of Michael being offered jobs on stage in the middle of jams. Michael was the drummer for The New Power Generation during a time where Prince was reinventing himself. But Prince isn't the only high profile artist Michael has worked with. There's Paul Westerberg, Chaka Khan, Maxwell, Nick Jonas, & Soul Asylum. Michael relays some behind-the-scenes stories about Prince, Paisley Park, and The Paisley Park Power Trio, among other things. And that ties in to a new project he's working on with long-time collaborator, Sonny Thompson called (Br)others. They have a single coming out and are playing a show with a lot of The New Power Generation. Check Michael out @michaelblandofficial & @brothersmusic2024 on Instagram. The early bird sale was released for Celebration 2024 at Prince's Paisley Park and the date and talent was also announced which include The Revolution, New Power Generation, and Morris Day with special guests. We talk about the pricing, the acts playing, and all that we know so far.
We sit down with two music legends Sonny Thompson and Michael Bland. Both of them have shared the stage with Prince's New Power Generation, but they have plenty of stories of their own becoming legends in their own right. We talk about musical history in Minneapolis before Prince became a household name, Michael's work with Soul Asylum, dispelling vault myths, and so much more.
This week we will be discussing the great Diamonds and Pearls deluxe edition set by Prince. We will be talking about the addition of Prince's new band the New Power Generation with a focus on Rosie Gaines during this period. We will be discussing the songs from the original LP as well as some great previously unreleased songs. If you're a Prince fan, you're going to want to hear this.

Planet LP host Ted Asregadoo and Popdose writer Keith Creighton are inching closer to the end of the year with the November New Music Report. This episode is jam-packed with some stellar music recommendations just in time for the holidays. Segment One: The Big Album It's Prince! Known at various times as The Purple One, Christopher, His Royal Badness, The Artist, or Jamie Starr, Prince was at the top of his game between 1980 and 1987 with an impressive music output that few in the music world could match. Why? Because of The Vault. A prolific writer, Prince vaulted roughly 8,000 songs. In 1991, after a series of lackluster albums, Prince released “Diamonds and Pearls” with his new backing band, the New Power Generation. The result was his fifth (and final) #1 hit in the US with “Cream,” a #3 hit with the title track, and two top 20 hits with “Gett Off” and Money Don't Matter 2 Night.” Overall, “Diamonds and Pearls” was an absolute commercial success for Prince. On October 27, 2023, Sony released a super deluxe version with three CDs of vaulted tracks, a double live album, a remaster of the original record, and a disc with singles and different mixes. That's a lot of music, and Ted and Keith break it all down into digestible bits to highlight what's brilliant about the super deluxe edition, what's good, and what misses the mark. Segment Two: New Music Releases The Transcanada Highwaymen's “Explosive Hits Vol #1 is mostly a carefully curated album of cover songs popular in the 1970s. These are Mellow and Radio Gold songs sung by a supergroup consisting of Moe Berry from The Pursuit of Happiness, Chris Murphy from Sloan, Craig Morthey from Odds, and Steven Page formerly of the Barenaked Ladies, but has gone on to a fantastic solo career. Featured songs include their cover of Andy Kim's “Rock Me Gently, and “Which Way You Goin' Billy” by The Poppy Family. Samples of both songs are embedded in this episode. Lol Tolhurst (former drummer from The Cure), Budgie (from Siouxsie & The Banshees), and producer Jackknife Lee have created a cinematic mindscrew of an album entitled “Los Angles.” Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark are back with what will likely be the final album of their career, and boy what a way to go out! Nowhere on the record are songs that sound like their biggest US hit, “If You Leave.” Rather, as Keith says, this is a soundtrack for the end of the world. Ted compares “Bauhaus Staircase” to Tears for Fears' “The Tipping Point” for its strength, its familiarity at times, and the satisfying way it's all put together. Duran Duran is back with Dance Macabre, a Halloween-theme mashup of covers, updated obscure deep cuts, and some originals. Also, guitarist Andy Taylor returns to the group, and so does the drummer of 17 years with the band, Warren Cuccrullo. If you want to go on a journey with a musician who is a bit of an acquired taste, give Christian Kjellvander a try. “Hold Your Love Still” may not be for everyone, but once you become familiar with Kjellvander's voice, you'll find this record mesmerizing — as you will hear. Nat Jay's latest EP, “Turns Out It's Not The End” is one of Keith's favorites this year. Comparing her to an outlier star to Taylor Swift's galaxy-consuming supernova, Jay's song “Something More” could have been included in the new Hunger Games soundtrack — and you'll be able to hear why. Shplang! has been on the music scene for almost three decades, and is part of the International Pop Overthrow scene. Their latest song, “Understood” is featured in this episode. Segment Three: Stream It Before You Buy It Quick hit recommendations. "Pretty Vicious" by The Struts “Telephone Line” by Juliana Hatfield “New Blue Sun” by Andre 3000 “Revisions of Truth” by One Square Mile “Chronicles of a Diamond” by Black Pumas “Can't Find The Brakes” by Dirty Honey “Purple Rain” by Dolly Parton “Harridan” (Live) by Porcupine Tree

Peoria native Liv Warfield takes cues from musical influences like Nina Simone, Etta James, Mavis Staples, Sade, Tina Turner and Mary J. Blige, but has carved out a style all her own, which can best be described as “alternative soul with a lil bit of Rock ‘n' Roll.” In 2006, she self-released her debut album Embrace Me. By 2009, she caught the eye of music icon Prince and ultimately joined his group the New Power Generation. After touring for several years and soaking up as much knowledge as she could from the ultimate music mentor, Warfield made her big splash on the national scene as a featured artist for VH1's You Oughta Know campaign, and then with the release of her major label debut album The Unexpected, which was executive produced by Prince. What followed were show-stopping performances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show with David Letterman and The Arsenio Hall Show; a 2014 Soul Train Music Award and nominations for two others; a BET Best New Artist Award nomination; an interview with National Public Radio; and high-profile cosigns from Lionel Richie, Cyndi Lauper, and Nancy Wilson of Heart. That same year, Warfield's performance closing out Essence Fest was hailed as one of the most memorable after shows at the New Orleans House of Blues. In 2015, Warfield and the NPG Hornz were named one of the top 10 bands to see at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. In 2017, Warfield collaborated with another one of her childhood influences, Nancy Wilson, to create the band Roadcase Royale. Their lead single “Get Loud” was featured prominently in the 2017 Women's March and they released their debut album First Things First later that year. If that weren't enough, their remake of Heart's These Dreams was featured in the film Molly's Game. Warfield recently recorded music for the Oscar-nominated HBO documentary Da Bronx. Her third album Olivia is coming in 2023.
