Najah Monique Todd is a pillar of the Tacoma Community, a master hair artist at Embellish Multispace Salon, a plus size model, globe trotter, and half of the duo that is the 90's pop influenced Tacoma band, known as Mirrorgloss. In this episode, we cover her recently established love for traveling and how impossible it isn't (even if you have to go it alone), keeping yourself safe in a Covid world and how important self-care and self-love is, especially amidst the chaos of a world grappling with racism head on. Najah also shares her thoughts on police violence, while recalling her own story of being arrested after calling the cops to help her in a domestic violence situation, and how betrayed she felt as a woman when the female officer threatened to book her for resisting arrest if she continued to cry.Through every dip and dive, in true Najah style, she embraces the good in all of these experiences, and shares how right now, America is loving itself, because you can't make a real change until you've looked into the darkness and purged it at the core. Najah is a strong, beautiful, and powerful woman, and it's an honor to give her a platform to share a snippet of her life with my listeners as she talks about her music and her life."Love yourself in the truest form possible." - Najah Monique ToddMusic from the show:Intro clip: I'm The Asshole by Zebrana BastardEnd track: Fantasy by MirrorglossLinks from the show:Follow Najah on InstagramSewell Trips - Travel The World, starting with the Dominican Republic, one of Najah's favorite travel planners that works with a payment plan that fits your budget, and also builds trips focused on helping African American women to see the world.Sewell Trips on FacebookEmbellish Multispace Salon - Book your hair appointment with Najah!Big Girlz move - Najah's Workout programMirrorgloss - Najah's music project with her bestie, Del Brown.Mirrorgloss WebsiteMirrorgloss on BandCampMirrorgloss on FacebookMirrorgloss on InstagramMirrorgloss on SpotifyZebrana Bastard LinksZebrana Bastard on Patreon Zebrana Bastard Website Zebrana Bastard on Youtube Zebrana Bastard on Facebook Zebrana Bastard on Bandcamp Zebrana Bastard on Instagram Zebrana Bastard on Twitter Show Sponsor: Becka Makes Buttons, LLCSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/zebranabastard)
Stephen Gibb is a heavy metal musician who has played in many bands, including Black Label Society, Crowbar, Kingdom of Sorrow, Saigon Kick, and before Covid struck, had been spending time accompanying his father, Barry Gibb, on tours. In 2011, Stephen offered me a chair on one of the lowest days in my life. Almost ten years later, we take an hour or so to share our struggles with addiction and our love for a life worth living in sobriety. Connection is a powerful gift, and you never know where it might one day lead.In this episode, the "Prince of Disco" (I found out 4 days prior to recording that he is the son of a Beegee) tells me about learning how to take accountability for himself and making better choices in a sober life, getting kicked out of Black Label Society, a relapse that almost took his life, and a web series scheduled to launch in July called "Addiction Walks" accompanied by the podcast "Addiction Talks".Please know that for anyone out there suffering with addiction, you truly are not alone in your struggle, and there is a thread of kindness that exists among those of us in recovery who are more than happy to help weave you into the tapestry of a beautiful, sober life.Tracks:Intro: 'I'm The Asshole' by Zebrana BastardEnd Track: 'Easier Now' by Stephen Gibb (unreleased track for an upcoming solo album)Stephen Gibb Links:WebsiteFacebookTwitterInstagramYoutubeOther LinksSunrise Detox Center Becka Makes ButtonsZebrana Bastard LinksWebsiteFacebookInstagramTwitterSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/zebranabastard)
This episode starts with a piece of one of Dr. Martin Luther King's Speeches. In the archives, the clip was called "Something Happening". It ends with one of my favorite bands that doesn't exist anymore, SuperNothing from Kent, WA. The song is called Facetime. In between, you have my own thoughts and opinions as to what is currently happening in the world. I'll have a guest with me next episode to discuss the process of recovery as we share our own stories of struggle, how we met, and why connection is so important. Here's the link to the audio clip for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.Here's how you can download the rest of the SuperNothing album, Life We Chose.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/zebranabastard)
Ethan is a guitarist and founding member of Portland based metal band, Unholy Crown. He and I have been friends since our mid teens. We partied together in our youth and supported each other in our recovery paths as adults. His addiction to heroin led him to almost a decade of incarceration, where he began taking college courses that would later pave the way for his life after prison. In this episode, we cover D&D, music recording gear, how Covid-19 has helped shape the current state of his band and their goals for the future, life after addiction, going after a bachelors in music, and the importance of tackling relationship issues and goals as a "team" with your significant other.Music used in the episode:Intro: I'm The Asshole by Zebrana BastardEnding Track: Kalashnikov by Unholy CrownLINKS from the Show:Unholy Crown on BandcampUnholy Crown on YoutubeUnholy Crown on FacebookAx fx 2 (Bias Music Tech Link)Zebrana Bastard on PatreonZebrana Bastard WebsiteZebrana Bastard on YoutubeZebrana Bastard on FacebookZebrana Bastard on BandcampZebrana Bastard on InstagramZebrana Bastard on TwitterShow Sponsor:Becka Makes Buttons, LLCSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/zebranabastard)
(New Episode out every other Wednesday)Michelle is one of the kindest and most compassionate women I've ever met. She is the lead singer of Le Saboteur, with roots deep into the Seattle Underground. Every project she's ever touched turns heads, and for as talented as she is, she's equally humble. Due to Covid-19, plans to interview before her upcoming album release tour got halted, and the conversation I had originally wanted to do with her transformed into what we have here...something very real and raw as we tackle radical compassion after heinous crimes against animals, humanity, and our planet. I wasn't fully prepared for the conversation, but whenever unprepared in life, we still carry on.Trigger Warnings: Religion, Sexual Assault, Global Warming, Animal Cruelty, Police Brutality, Mental HealthIntro song: "I'm the Asshole" by Zebrana BastardEnd Track: "Tightrope" by Le SaboteurALL THE LINKS:Le Saboteur WebsiteLe Saboteur on BandcampLe Saboteur on InstagramClimate Change NasaClimate Change and WildlifeFarm SanctuaryScience-based diet information resourceFeral Cat InfoBird Conservation & CatiosZebrana Bastard WebsiteZebrana Bastard on BandcampZebrana Bastard on YoutubeThis episode is directly supported by Patrons on Patreon.com/zerbanabastardSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/zebranabastard)

In this continuation from episode six (Don't Fuck with Horses), we cover a lot of hard learned lessons which leads to stressing why self-care is so incredibly important. After being diagnose with breast cancer at 31, Butterfly essentially shut down, and would not accept the news until seven years later when she was forced to face her disease or die. Instead of using chemo and other toxic methods commonly used in the United States to treat her cancerous body, she turned towards forms of alternative medicine from China, India, and a certain type of mushroom commonly used as a treatment for cancer in Japan. We talk about her methods of recovery, maintaining health, and learning how to negotiate space within her body to successfully live with Lymes disease. We also touch on how shedding toxic relationships with friends and family is not only okay, but necessary, reaping the benefits of the energy you put into the world, and thoughts on self care.We delve into distrust of the government, thoughts and opinions on human nature, and dropped some love for Maya Angelou, an incredible woman, author, and poet. I hope you enjoy this as much as we did recording it.Music used in this episode:Intro: "I'm The Asshole" By Zebrana BastardEnd Track: "Place For Pause" co-composed/recorded by A. The woman I sit down with is Butterfly Fiddle-Hooper, a bi-racial, classically trained violinist, who has been honing her craft for well over thirty years. The first guest I'd never known prior. She is the first documented person to hula-hoop while playing the fiddle and is also a cancer survivor, who has successfully lived with Lymes Disease for over 10 years.I am grateful for the time she shared with me as we covered a variety of topics from growing up as a half black and half white child among a racist and "prestigious" equestrian family in the desert of Reno, Nevada, to turning her back on horses, falling in love with the fiddle, and learning how to dance for this moment and this moment alone. Within' the experience shared between us, we tackle heavy subjects such as varying degrees of abuse, relationship endings, death, definitions of family, inspiration behind the music, and embracing the inevitable changes in life, I hope you can find a message of hope as we share a bit about ourselves on the paths on self discovery. We got lost in conversation, so this episode will be split into two parts.Music used in this episode:Intro: "I'm The Asshole" By Zebrana BastardEnd Track: "Heart Beat" composed/recorded by A. Sherrie Mayes Vineyard is responsible for Urban Unglued Freaks and Fae, a series of yearly vending events that take place all around Western Washington. What sets her apart is that everything she does is for the love of the artists she finds. She doesn't make money off the events she puts on, and it truly is a labor of love. The work she does extends beyond the events she puts on and into hosting live meetings as well as an online Facebook group that exists just to help vendors learn, grow, and be the best they can be. In this podcast, we dive into why she started Urban Unglued, her passion for encouraging weirdos to be their best selves, and the community that she's built from all of it. We also cover what sets her apart from other vendor coordinators and how you can be a part of this community, if vending in Western Washington is something you're into or may be trying to get into.Music used in this episode:Intro: "I'm The Asshole" by Zebrana BastardEnd track: Secret Unreleased Song by Jesse Kenneth Cotu Williams and friendsJesse also has a new album out now called "I Tried", which you should definitely check out.LINKS from the show:Captain Slinky's Weird Lamps on FacebookUrban Unglued Freaks and Fae on Facebook for upcoming eventsUrban Unglued Freaks and Fae on InstagramThe Bazaarists on Facebook (great networking hub for any vendors in Western WashingtonZebrana Bastard on FacebookZebrana Bastard on InstagramZebrana Bastard WebsiteZebrana Bastard on Patreon (support the show)Becka Makes Buttons Website(Sponsor of this show, and great place for custom buttons)Becka Makes Buttons on FacebookBecka Makes Buttons on InstagramSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/zebranabastard)
What's it like to tour after cancer?Always amazing, always humble, always kind. The wonderful Molly Mess of San Diego punk band, Some Kind of Nightmare, joins me on this episode to talk about her battle with breast cancer, the aftermath of a double mastectomy, life on the road after, connecting with fans, and more. Molly Mess, and her husband Chy Mess have been on the road for 6 years together, in a band for 14 years, and have celebrated over 17 years of love and friendship. There's a strength that shines throughout their lives and in their music. It's a rare but beautiful thing when you find someone willing to tackle everything that life brings on.Band Bio (Taken from FaceBook): The American punk rock band, Some Kind of Nightmare, has brought amazing energy, raw sound, and a strong stage presence with them everywhere they perform. In 2013 they quit their jobs, threw out everything they owned, hit the road, and never looked back. The three piece group continues to take on the nation with their message of overcoming struggle and modern social issues, while gaining support and momentum along the way.Music used on the show:Intro: 'I'm The Asshole' looped clip by Zebrana BastardEnd Track: "Driven Red" by Some Kind of Nightmare***LINKS***Some Kind of Nightmare on FacebookSome Kind of Nightmare on BandcampSome Kind of Nightmare on YouTubeSome Kind of Nightmare Tour ScheduleSome Kind of Nightmare on InstagramCancer Is Not Funny (It's Hillarious) blogspotBlast Off Vintage (Salem, OR Clothing shop & Venue)Zebrana Bastard on Patreon (support the show)Zebrana Bastard WebsiteZebrana Bastard on FacebookZebrana Bastard on InstagramBecka Makes Buttons, LLC (Show Sponsor)Becka Makes Buttons on FacebookSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/zebranabastard)
