Welcome to Nick's Pick's Vol. 1, in which we invite our Very Special Guest and returning champion Nick McCann on to discuss any documentary he chooses. Today's documentary is Some Kind of Monster, about Metallica, released in 2004, directed by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky. If you are at all interested in music documentaries, you've probably seen this one, or it's at least on your radar. We go on an emotional journey with Metallica as they deal with the departure of bassist Jason Newsted, spend a whole lot of time with "performance enhancement coach" Phil Towle, record their infamous St. Anger album, audition new bass players, almost fall apart, James goes to rehab, the art auction happens, the "stock" argument goes down, Bob Rock is in the mix, they eat a lot of takeout, so many things happen in this legendary documentary that we can't possibly cover it all in one podcast, but we try to do it justice. Her middle grade and young adult novels address religious identity, internet predation, eating disorders, and online bullying. Howdy! Step into the Get Out of Jail Saloon because it's the last chance for a handful of these wonderful Pavement songs and your old pals are here to sling you some bourbon and talk crap about stupid nonsense. Chris is celebrating Black Cat Appreciation Day, Mark has just scored a hat trick of goals agains a 9-year-old girl and Paul is living among the creatures of the night. Fortunately, Conundrum icons Emre Ramadan and Duncan Robertson are here to distract proceedings with analysis of certain members of Pavement's... eh... members and contribute to this whole food packaging thing that Mark is obsessed with. Thank goodness Chris is here with on point Simpsons references but how many times can you watch Some Kind of Monster? You only get two or may be three chances to make a first impression. Meet, David Bolen! David lives in Los Angeles and is a highly sought-after Cinematographer with numerous, narrative feature films, Television projects, and documentaries under his belt. David's work includes 2020's Sundance documentary darling “Some Kind of Heaven”, his feature film “Soni” which premiered at the 2018 Venice International Film Festival, and "Beast", which was in competition at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival and won the Independent Episodic Grand Jury Prize. David's work hasn't just made the rounds on the festival circuit, it's also reached the Oscars, his stunning cinematography on the New York Times OP DOC “A Concerto is a Conversation" was part of the reason this fantastic short was nominated for Best Short Documentary at 92nd Academy Awards. Most recently, his feature film “Gone in the Night” (formally “The Cow”) and starring Winona Ryder, premiered at the 2022 SXSW film festival and amazingly, secured distribution with Vertical Entertainment. It can currently be streamed on Amazon. David is not just a talented Cinematographer, he's also a wonderful friend and supportive filmmaker. He and I met a few years ago on the set of a true crime documentary series we were both working on, and we've been cheering each other on ever since. George Carlin wasn't just a comedian, he was one of the great American artists of the later half of the 20th-Century, and he was shaped by and interacted with the great events of his day with intelligence, wit, and an ever-adapting nature. That's what co-director Michael Bonfiglio (with Judd Apatow) of “George Carlin's American Dream” explains when he sat down with Mike. Bonfiglio's (producer of “Paradise Lost 2 & 3”, “Some Kind of Monster” & “The Zen Diaries of Gary Shandling”) film traces the “straight” comic of the 60s, the more personal and edgy comic of the 70's that we all know, and even the darker–but equally important, the film argues–comic of the 80s and 90s. Michael and Mike discuss the roots of Carlin's comedy in his Catholic school childhood in Manhattan, the birth of his comedy career in Los Angeles, and the cocaine-fueled 70s. Throughout, his wife Brenda and daughter Kelly stood by him, and despite his solitary nature, his comedy cohort inspired and challenged him. “George Carlin's American Dream” is now playing on HBO. Garrick Bailey and Timothy Paul Jones have already devoted one entire episode of this podcast to love. That was when they discussed Foreigner's 1984 hit “I Want to Know What Love Is.” But Garrick and Timothy are far too full of love to fit all of their feelings about love into a single episode. That's why they're joining forces with Huey Lewis to talk about love again in this special Three Chords and the Truth episode of The Apologetics Podcast. Along the way, the dynamic duo discusses the history of Huey Lewis and the News, Augustine of Hippo, the Trinity, and the widespread contemporary declaration that “love is love.” In the end, they discover that, unless the nature of God defines love, “love” distorts something good that God designed for our joy and for his glory. Also, “American Express” was probably a better name for Huey Lewis' band than “the News.” If only they had spelled it as “Ämërïcän Ëxprëss,” they might have been successful in keeping their original name as well as avoiding being sued by the credit-card company of the same name. In this installment of “Behind the Covers,” Garrick and Timothy take a look at a song that was popularized on the Grand Funk Railroad album “All the Girls in the World Beware!!!,” in which Grand Funk Railroad outdid Van Halen's song “Everybody Wants Some!!” by adding three exclamation points instead of stopping at a mere two. If only they had added umlauts as well, the title would have been perfect. The cover song this time is “Some Kind of Wonderful,” and your intrepid cohosts agree that Rod Stewart's cover version isn't wonderful at all. ABOUT HOSTS Timothy Paul Jones, Ph.D., is C. Edwin Gheens Professor of Christian Ministry at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He teaches in the areas of family ministry and applied apologetics. He has authored or edited more than a dozen books, including Why Should I Trust the Bible?, The God Who Goes Before You, Perspectives on Family Ministry, and Christian History Made Easy. Wait. Those are the words echoing in Val's head as he stumbles away from the Great Tree of New Elftown. Seems a simple enough instruction. But how do you wait on a tree? Are our heroes expected to sit for centuries. No. This is an entertainment medium. I'm not going to do that to you. I'm here to amuse you and irritate our players, while maybe weaving SOME KIND of compelling story. And hopefully... if I'm lucky... that's what waits for you today. If you think about it, Metallica is a lot like society. We talk about Metallica, the recording of St. Anger, the listless nature of an America sitting around just waiting for 9/11, and Rick's favorite documentary of all time: "Some Kind of Monster" (2004).
Daniel Lobell is a man of seemingly endless talents. He is a comedian, a comic book creator, a podcast pioneer and... a chicken farmer. And he is a good friend of Mark and Lowell's.He currently hosts the podcast “Modern Day Philosopher” where he and fellow comedians like Bill Burr, Maria Bamford and Lewis Black delve into some of life's deep questions and “Tipping the Scales,” a podcast about body image and health. Daniel has performed stand-up comedy around the world and has even done a TedX talk! His autobiographical comic book series “Fair Enough” as well as his two albums “Some Kind of Comedian” and “The Nicest Boy in Barcelona" are available through his website. Legendary all-American frontman and guitarist, Mark Farner, was the engine that pulled the original Grand Funk Railroad repeatedly to the top of the charts, and today he's a platinum recording artist 30 times over. At age 70, Farner commands the stage with the same intensity and outpouring of love as he did during the summer of '69 and his fans are still flocking to see “the Captain.” The rock patriot's synergy and open heart still come through in epic hits that defined a generation including— “I'm Your Captain” (Closer to Home)” “We're An American Band” “Heartbreaker” “Bad Time To Be In Love” and recut covers of “The Loco-Motion” and “Some Kind of Wonderful.” Being viewed as a “Rockstar” is only one facet of the legacy of this Michigan-born son. Mark is as real as they get: he's a husband, a father, and grandfather, and in his fourth decade of marriage to wife Lesia. He's a true family man. This podcast reveals the heart and soul of Mark. He shared some great stories that you have never heard before relating to the power of love and soul that radiates from his essense. Special thanks to Melissa Kucirec for arranging Mark to be a part of our Podcast family.
