In this episode, Hakim Kay and I jumped on this hot topic in Uganda from a statement that Eddy Kenzo said in his press conference “Philly has no song that's better than mine”.
In this episode, I bring back my brother Hakim Kay. Hakim appeared on the podcast last year on episodes 83 & 84. Talking about what it means to be a Ugandan Diaspora. Hakim Williams is an Assistant Professor of Africana Studies and Education at Gettysburg College. Early this year, he was a Visiting Scholar at the Advanced Consortium on Cooperation, Conflict and Complexity (AC4) at The Earth Institute, Columbia University. This week on Bridging Philly, we celebrate the pages of Philadelphia's African American book authors and book sellers. Host and KYW community impact reporter Racquel Williams discusses the legacy of the Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection at Temple University with its curator, Dr. Diane Turner, who worked closely with the scholar. She and art director Eric Battle describe the historic contributions of Black Philadelphians in their recent graphic novel, BLAM! Black Lives Always Mattered! Next, children's book author Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow shares how important it is to publish pictures of young, Black Muslim children for kids to see images that look like them. Finally, West Philly's Hakim's Bookstore earns a blue historic marker for the distinction of the city's longest-operating, Black-owned bookshop. Yvonne Blake continues her father's dream of sharing knowledge. A šta smo pričali, čućete u samom podkastu!

“I would say that you have to realize that learning doesn't have to be and isn't an assignment. It's not something that has any inherent value. There is no value in reading a book by itself or going through a course or sitting through a course or listening to an audiobook. But if instead you realize that all of these are tools and powerful tools to move you to where you want to go. Then everything changes and it becomes so exciting and so much fun to say.” In Season 5, Episode 01 of the Boss Uncaged Podcast, S.A. Grant sits down with the Founder of InsiderSchool.com, Brandon Hakim.
Nick Hakim - “Vertigo” from the 2022 album COMETA on ATO / PIAS. Nick Hakim has been making amorphous psych-soul since 2014 that hones in on his gorgeous buttery smooth croons. Just since 2020, he's released three projects, 2020's WIl This Make Me Good, a collaborative record with jazz saxophonist Roy Nathanson, Small Things, in 2021, and, most recently, the intimately stunning COMETA. Featuring appearances by Alex G, Helado Negro, Arto Lindsay, and DJ Dahl, with co-production from indie's go-to guy Andrew Sarlo, COMETA is a collection of romantic songs written through different lenses, guided by Hakim's own experience of falling in love in a way that made him feel like he was floating. This is best seen on our Song of the Day, “Vertigo,” in which Hakim is struck by the hypnotic feelings of falling in love. The tender track whirrs and sputters as Hakim coos, "Can't tell if it's me or the room that's moving." “The key is to find that extremity of love for yourself,” he says of the romantic themes on the record. “It's about growing into someone you want to be; it's about finding pure love within yourself when the world around us seems to be crumbling.” The song comes with a cinematic and perfectly-paired video by Asli Baykal shot at a real-life rotating house in Bosnia-Herzegovina built by Vojin Kusic for his wife, who desired a life where she could enjoy constantly-evolving views. I have this conversation on a weekly basis about education reform, "is college really worth it anymore", and "I wish they would have taught me this in school". New York singer/songwriter Nick Hakim has been producing records of gently psychedelic soul here for almost a decade. Occasionally, he drops the gentle psychedelia in favor of something more obviously trippy – it happens several times on his newest album, Cometa. (The title is Spanish for “kite,” although the American-born Hakim sings in English.) He is one of those singers whose voice rarely seems to rise above a whisper – and though he's probably sick of being compared to the ill-starred but still-mythic English folkie Nick Drake, Hakim's songs can sound a little like Nick Drake fronting a psychedelic soul band from the early 70s. Nick Hakim and his band perform these songs in-studio. (-John Schaefer) Set list: Vertigo, Happen, Feeling Myself

Friday is a day of great historical and religious significance in Islamic tradition, as Allah makes clear in the Qur'an. As such, the yearly consumer event of “Black” Friday – variants of which have been adopted throughout the world – is, then, both a misnomer as well as antithetical to the forgotten religious festivals that it seems to have replaced. This frenzied celebration of consumption is observably destroying the planet. In contrast, the tradition of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was that of deep consideration for the earth's environment and the animals that live here alongside us. Only through following his example can we begin to restore the perfect balance of creation that we have disrupted due to our unquenchable greed for worldly possessions that will not accompany us to the hereafter.

A pro-trans charity group in the UK aimed at LGBTQ youth comes under fire for employing a man who uploads pornographic images of himself online as a schoolgirl. Needless to say, parents are outraged. Plus, updates to the University of Pittsburgh saga where taxpayer funded experiments had unborn babies kept alive for as long as possible during their abortions and their scalps transplanted onto lab mice. Finally, alleged election security breaches profiting communist China aren't enough to stop one Georgia county from renewing its contract with Konnech.
There remains a tendency to reduce the history of African and Caribbean people in Britain to a simple story: it is one that begins in 1948 with the arrival of a single ship, the Empire Windrush. Yet, from the very beginning, from the moment humans first stood on this rainy isle, there have been African and Caribbean men and women set at Britain's heart.Professor Hakim Adi is the first historian of African heritage to become a professor of history in Britain— he has been researching and writing about the history of African and Caribbean people in Britain for decades. Hakim joins Dan to chart a course through British history with an unobscured view of the actions of African and Caribbean people, sharing the stories of the Africans in Britain during the Roman period, Black Tudors, Stuarts and Victorians, and shedding light on the Windrush Myth. This episode was produced by Hannah Ward and edited by Dougal Patmore. If you'd like to learn more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad-free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit - subscribe to History Hit today! To download the History Hit app please go to the Android or Apple store.Complete the survey and you'll be entered into a prize draw to win 5 Historical Non-Fiction Books- including a signed copy of Dan Snow's 'On This Day in History'. This week I got to speak with Hakim El Hattab. I feel pretty special as Hakim told me he doesn't do public stuff very often. I get it! He's a busy man with a family, a successful company, and ambitious other projects. I think of Hakim as the master of simple but satisfying UI concepts that have a way of becoming bigger than demos. Consider Ladda, which you can find as part of his personal site, which is a button that expands to show a spinner. This concept started with Hakim has has made it's way to surely hundreds or thousands of websites, some as big as Slack and some as awesome as CodePen itself.
