In this episode of Talk of Fame, Kylie Montigney talks with Bibi Hakim. Bibi is a passionate advocate for mental health and gender equality, with an impressive background in political science and public administration from the University of Ottawa, where she focused on international relations and mental health policy. She previously served as a Legislative Assistant in the Parliament of Canada, where she worked closely with Members of Parliament, analyzing bills, legislative amendments, and committee reports on international trade, science and technology, government operations, and more. Her commitment to global advocacy led her to the United Nations Population Fund's Asia-Pacific Regional Office in Thailand. There, Bibi championed initiatives to eliminate gender-based violence, promote gender equality, and strengthen international mental health advocacy. She played a key role in regional consultations for the UN Commission on the Status of Women and developed a monitoring and evaluation platform used across UNFPA regional and country offices. Bibi is also the founder of Project Breaking Barriers, a campus-based initiative that creates safe spaces for students to decompress and learn mental wellness practices. Her efforts sparked faculty-wide recognition, leading to the creation of a scholarship supporting students facing mental health and financial struggles. Her advocacy work has reached the federal level—Bibi authored a policy proposal calling for accessible, affordable, and inclusive mental health services. This proposal was adopted by three major political parties during the 2021 election and helped pave the way for the establishment of Canada's first federal Minister of Mental Health and Addictions. Bibi is also a proud recipient of the Duke of Edinburgh's Gold, Silver, Bronze, and commemorative Diamond Awards. Listen in as we discuss Bibi's journey advocating for Mental Health. You'll be inspired by her dedication to inspiring others through advocating for people with depression & anxiety.Follow Me:Instagram:@Officialkyliemontigney@TalkoffamepodFacebook:OfficialkyliemontigneyTalkoffameTwitter:@Kyliemontigney4About Me:Hi, I'm Kylie! We discuss how progressives are not always necessarily socialists, and how, in many cases, progressivism can sometimes be a barrier to socialism. We also discuss the technicalities of the socialist strategy and how the Separation of Powers and multi-party democracy could function under socialism in order to avoid the pitfalls of past Marxist-Leninist Regimes, and what MLs today in general miss. Romina Hakim is the owner of Red Lips Media. She is one of those creators who scores a hattrick in audio creation as her work extends from radio, to voiceover and to podcasting. We talked all three with the Argentinian, from successful radio host and podcast coach to her voiceover work as a Spanish voice for big brands. She highlights her move from Argentina to Barcelona, where she faced challenges adapting to the Castilian accent but eventually secured voiceover work with apps like calm.com. Romina talked about the importance of creativity, audience engagement, and authenticity in podcasting. And (my favourite part) the need for podcasters to understand their audience, experiment with formats, and leverage social media platforms like Reddit and Pinterest to grow their audience. Please sign up for the SOUNDING OFF Newsletter. Dawgman.com's Kim Grinolds was at Big Ten Media Days this week and he was able to catch up with current CBS media personality and former Washington Head Coach Rick Neuheisel for a look back at his time on Montlake, including the teams and players that he coached. They talked about the 2000 Rose Bowl season that was filled with what Neuheisel called 'really high highs' and then 'knocked back down to sea level' with Curtis Williams' injury. He also shared stories and anecdotes with Kim on the following UW players, coaches and department personnel: Roc Alexander, Cody Pickett, Jeremiah Pharms, Wil Hooks, Willie Hurst, Hakim and Mikal Akbar, Marques Tuiasosopo, Jerramy Stevens, John Anderson, Todd Elstrom, Paul Arnold, Anthony Vontoure, Derrell Daniels, Jimmy Newell, Chris Massey, Sam Blanche, Nick Olszewski, Ben Mahdavi, Spencer Marona, Pat Conniff, Anthony Kelley, Steve Axman, Claudine Low, and Tank (Terry) Johnson, who was involved in finding a kidney donor for Nate Robinson.

There's a story we often tell ourselves about the American economy, particularly when we talk about trade, manufacturing, and small business. It is often simplified in political debates – one focused on bringing jobs back, on buying American, on protecting local industries through measures like tariffs. But the reality, as lived by the people actually making things, sourcing ingredients, and meeting payroll, is often far more complex, tangled in global supply chains and buffeted by forces far beyond their control. Homes, families, and livelihoods are at stake while people up top seem to be posting through it. What does it really mean when tariffs are threatened, implemented, and changed creating uncertainty? How does a third-generation bakery navigate sourcing ingredients like chocolate, which simply isn't grown commercially in the US, or finding replacement parts for specialized European machinery? What happens to prices, to cash flow, to the viability of a beloved local business when costs for everything from healthcare to shipping surge, and it feels like the people in elected office only care about the biggest, billionaire businesses? My guest today, Joe Hakim, is the General Manager of Ackroyd's Scottish Bakery, a long-standing institution in the Detroit area. And he's been doing something relatively unusual: using social media to be remarkably transparent about the granular, often frustrating, day-to-day realities of running his business while dealing with these pressures. This isn't abstract economic theory for Joe. This is real life. Feedback as always - dailydetroit - at - gmail - dot com and 313-789-3211, leave us a voicemail for the podcast.
