The Surfer’s Journal presents Soundings with Jamie Brisick

Thomas Victor Carroll is a surfing godhead from Newport Beach, Australia, known for his radicality, focus, and power. He competed on the world tour from 1979 to 1993, winning the world title in 1983 and 1984, and taking home a total of 26 event victories, including the Pipeline Masters in 1987, 1990, and 1991. In 1988, he made history by signing surfing's first million-dollar contract. He won the 1984 Surfer Poll and was inducted into the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame in 1990. In the aughts, he teamed up with Ross Clarke-Jones to chase big waves around Australia. In his 2013 autobiography, TC: Tom Carroll, written with his brother, surf journalist Nick Carroll, Tom was very forthcoming about his drug use. Now 62, he's been sober for many years. A calmer, quieter presence, Carroll meditates daily, but still surfs voraciously. In this episode, Carroll talks with Jamie Brisick about the evolution of performance at Pipeline, his first Pipe Masters win, competing in the face of tragedy, helmets, battling addiction, the complexities of a hunger for attention, and his favorite surfers to watch.

Nick Carroll, from Western Australia, loves golf. A player who really cares about their sport tends to have certain qualities. Simply feeling respect for the game is an important one; striving to improve and be the best golfer you can be – well that's worth playing the game for in itself. Similarly, a genuine desire to help others to enjoy golf should also earn you a lucky bounce or two on the fairways. Nick Carroll certainly makes the cut in all of the above. He lives with the condition of autism and this can get in the way for him at times. But his progress in playing golf, and his job working in golf, both say a lot about how he views the game, while at the same time perhaps reflecting what his friends and supporters think about Nick. His advice to others underlines it all: “Making new friends, enjoyment, and having a really good time playing the sport you will always love… I would say go out there, enjoy the experience… And anyone can help you out there. Don't be frightened to go out and play.” Enjoy Nick's story with EDGA today.

4Ever15: Choose Kindness [caption id="attachment_11746" align="alignleft" width="369"] Nick Carroll winning Best Junior Handler at the Great Dane specialty in Des Moines, IA.[/caption] Denise Carroll joins host Laura Reeves to share her story of how the twin epidemics of school bullying and teen suicide affected her, after her son, Nick, took his life last month. Nick Carroll was Denise's adopted son whose happiest place was dog shows. He had friends and projects and felt safe, showing Great Danes in the breed ring and Juniors. “It didn't matter who was competing,” Denise said. “He would cheer you on no matter what. If he lost in juniors he'd still cheer on his friends. The friendships he made at dog shows were really close ones. He maintained some really good friendships.” But his school life was another matter. Denise said that Nick was routinely bullied at school, including additional attacks around his service dog. The 2019 School Crime Supplement to the National Crime Victimization Survey (National Center for Education Statistics and Bureau of Justice) indicates that, nationwide, about 22% of students ages 12–18 experienced bullying. “What I feel is, when Nick started taking the dog to school is what made him an easy target. School was the biggest issue for him,” Denise said. How to avoid costing someone their life “The biggest thing is to realize what we're all struggling with something,” Denise said. “You never know what someone is going through at the time. So, you should try to be kind. In today's society, people can hide behind their phone, be anonymous and say things and not have consequences for their actions.” More survival tips from Denise: Today's kids have gone through a lot more trauma than kids did when I was growing up. Walk a mile in someone else's shoes Parents need to talk to their kids, that a difference in someone else isn't a bad thing Parents don't communicate with kids. Kids have electronics that are their parents. They don't talk with mom and dad or sit down and have meals together. Statistics from the Suicide & Crisis Center of North Texas: Suicide is the third leading cause of death of young people between the ages of 15 and 24. 5,000 young people complete suicide in the U.S. each year. Each year, there are approximately 10 youth suicides for every 100,000 youth. Each day, there are approximately 12 youth suicides. Every 2 hours and 11 minutes, a person under the age of 25 completes suicide. In the past 60 years, the suicide rate has quadrupled for males 15 to 24 years old, and has doubled for females of the same age. For every completed suicide by youth, it is estimated that 100 to 200 attempts are made. “We went to Orlando (for the AKC National Championship),” Denise said. “It was bittersweet because Nick was supposed to be with us. I took some friends of Nick's and his sister to Sea World. We'd laugh for a while and somebody would say Nick would have loved this. At one point, the four of us just hugged each other and cried. It was special because they loved him just like we did. “Christmas has been hard,” Denise said. “I put off wrapping presents because I had presents for him that he'll never open….” Nick's Message: Be helpful and kind. “His shining moments were when he was helping people,” Denise said. “I want more people to be like that. To give to others. And not be takers and just do what's best for you.

Author and surf scribe Nick Carroll joins the podcast for a deep discussion about a wide and unexpected array of surfing topics. He breaks down the differences between Australian and American surf journalism as well as the similarities between the California and Australia surf scenes. He describes how you can learn a lot about who a person really is by watching them in the water. He dives into the idea of rebellion in surfing, the long-standing surf institutions, the anti-establishment community, and the death of surf culture. He shares stories of his early competitive aspirations, watching his younger brother win World Titles, and how he moved from competing to writing about surfing for a living. He also touches on the current surfing boom caused by the pandemic and Kelly Slater's future on tour before giving his top five things that changed the pro surfing game forever. Aren’t ambiguous words like “cool” and “weird” kind of unhelpful in their ubiquity? Especially in terms of the power words can have on how depressed or anxious we feel? This was a pretty big way to round out the year for me; easily one of the most meaningful conversations I’ve ever had (let alone recorded). I’m hugely thankful to Nick for making time for me and setting the tone for a challenging and seriously impactful conversation about mental health. I hope this resonates positively somewhere out there, because even if listening to it helps just one person, it will be worth me having almost broken down crying in the middle of it! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/boia/message

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/boia/message

Before Nick Carroll became a treasured journalist and celebrated author, he was one of many red-hot surfers from Sydney’s northern beach of Newport. Matter of fact, the older Carroll brother was a two-time national champion in Australia in 79 and 81. He was also a founding member of the Newport Plus Surf Club, one of Australia’s most powerful. Midway through the 1981 season, the Newport Plus crew had six surfers sitting in the Top 30 on the world rankings. In 1984, when Shaun Tomson and Tom Carroll came to Bells Beach for the world title showdown, it was Nick who eliminated Shaun, securing his little brother his second-straight title. Nick then got busy writing about that day's events for Tracks, where he was the editor. Today at 59, Nick hasn’t slowed at a bit. He’s still surfing his brains out, and channeling his competitive fire into various swim, paddle, and endurance races. He coaches and trains with some of Australia’s hottest talent in that arena, and he’ll be doing his seventh Molokai Challenge in the summer of 2019. Nick’s been writing about surfing for more than 40 years now, gathering incredible insights into our ever-evolving culture, so it’s always a blast catching up with him. As a bonus, there’s some added color from Derek Hynd, a fellow Newport Plus member. Topics run the full spectrum, so strap in and get to know one of surfing’s most coveted tribal leaders.
