Today we're going to talk about something very dear to my heart. Public speaking for techies who are presenting to non-techies. We've all been there, sitting through a boring technical presentation, trying to make some sense of all the technical jargon and detailed flowcharts. I absolutely get it. I am a techie myself. I actually have a Master's degree in Computer Science, and I spent more than a decade in the IT industry. So, I absolutely understand that struggle. I've presented myself to non-techies many times and I've watched my colleagues presenting to non-techies as well. So today, I'd like to share with you six public speaking tips for techies presenting to non-techies. Now, if you're a non-techie yourself, these tips work for absolutely all presentations, so stay with me. For some of you, the biggest fear in public speaking doesn't really stem from being in front of a live audience, whether on stage or on camera. It is from having certain people in that audience who make you feel very nervous. It could be your peers, it could be your competitors, or it could be some influencers that you really respect. So what do you do in order to not completely freeze and to not let those people in the audience intimidate you? Think about when someone comes up to you and tells you what a great job you did, or another person compliments you on the beautiful dress you're wearing. Maybe someone else tells you how smart you are. Accepting a compliment is pretty hard if you're like most people, right? We often feel uncomfortable about being complimented. It's also sort of ingrained in us that we should be humble and we shouldn't brag. So how do you respond to a compliment? For a lot of people, fear of public speaking stems from the fact that you're standing on a stage in front of a LOT of people. My students often tell me, “I'm great one-on-one. It's just when you have more than one person. When you have 10 people. When you have 100 people. When you have 1000 people. That's when I am afraid, but I'm not afraid one-on-one.” Well... today's episdoe is all about how you can take your one-on-one experience and transpose it to public speaking. Nobody's perfect, right? I think we can all agree with that, but so many people feel that they have to appear perfect when they're on stage or on camera. Particularly now, when we're surrounded by videos of these perfect influencers who speak perfectly, look perfect and dress perfectly. It is just so stressful for the rest of us to try and match that perfection. But how important is it to actually be perfect in public speaking? How important is being perfect when you are speaking to your audience on stage or on camera? Like so many of you, I am an introverted entrepreneur, which means I have to go to a lot of networking events. And what is the worst nightmare for an introvert? That's right! A networking event. There is absolutely nothing worse than going into a roomful of strangers where you have to mingle, meet people, and talk to everybody. Absolutely horrifying right? But since I've been an entrepreneur for almost 20 years, I have been to my fair share of networking events. And over the years, I have created sort of a framework for myself, as an introvert, to go to a networking event and avoid completely draining myself, to meet people and leave a really good impression, and to build long-lasting connections. Can you guess what is the biggest mindset block in public speaking? If you're like most people in the world, you're either afraid of public speaking or don't particularly enjoy it. And 9 times out of 10, it's because of a very specific mindset block. Are you ready? “The audience is out there to judge and criticize me!” Has this thought ever crossed your mind? Be honest. I sure experienced it many-many times. And it kept on haunting me until I finally implemented a massive but very simple mindset shift. Watch the video to learn what that mindset shift was. And this is what we're diving in today! You can watch the Video version of this podcast on my blog: https://www.byvictorial.com/blog/How-to-be-a-great-public-speaker-when-you-are-an-introvert
