Why we learn the most when we accept that we might be wrong.Effective communication isn't about having all the answers. As Astro Teller knows, it's about finding (and sometimes fumbling) your way through the questions.Teller is a computer scientist, entrepreneur, and inventor who serves as Captain of Moonshots at X, Alphabet's Moonshot Factory. In his work leading teams toward audacious solutions to seemingly unsolvable problems, he embraces what he calls “a learning journey,” where being wrong isn't the end, but the beginning. “As scary as it is to be wrong,” he says, it's a necessary part of the discovery process. Whether experimenting in the lab or testing our thoughts and opinions in conversation with others, it's about having the humility and curiosity to face the limits of our understanding. “When do you learn something? You learn something when you have a model about the world, and then you get some data that tells you you're wrong,” he says. “You learn nothing when you're right.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Teller and host Matt Abrahams discuss how embracing uncertainty drives innovation, why leaders should reward learning habits over outcomes, and how we learn the most when we're not afraid to find that we might be wrong. To listen to the extended Deep Thinks version of this episode, please visit FasterSmarter.io/premium.Episode Reference Links:Astro TellerAstro's Book: Sacred Cows Ep.70 Ideas Fuel Innovation: Why Your First Ideas Aren't Always the Best Ep.20 Question Your Questions: How to Spark Creativity in Your Communication Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:18) - Defining a Moonshot (04:21) - Building a Learning Machine (07:00) - Learning vs. Productivity (08:35) - Capturing and Sharing Learning (10:49) - Rewarding Habits, Not Outcomes (13:17) - Moonshot Success Stories (16:16) - The Power of Storytelling in Innovation (17:46) - Launching The Moonshot Podcast (19:37) - The Final Three Questions (25:27) - Conclusion ********Thank you to our sponsors. Welcome to the Like Attracts Like Mindshift Challenge! Over the next 21 days, we are dropping a podcast a day with our most powerful mindset shifts and techniques. Join us as we go on a journey of self discovery and uncover the truth of who we are. On Day 20, we discuss the pursuit of happiness. We often believe if we just get this thing, create this experience, or have this life, we will finally be happy! The truth is, we are not actually chasing happiness-- you are chasing peace. Highs and lows are part of life, so expecting yourself to feel happy all the time is not sustainable. When you access peace, you can be in the middle of the storm, or in the highest of high places, and feel the same in both experiences. Happiness is an endless chase, peace comes from being happy with yourself and your choices. Action Step Today: Are you still chasing happiness? Do you have a belief that if you just "got this thing" that you will finally allow yourself to feel happy? Today, aim for being at peace instead of feeling happy. What can I do to find peace today? Welcome to the Like Attracts Like Mindshift Challenge! Over the next 21 days, we are dropping a podcast a day with our most powerful mindset shifts and techniques. Join us as we go on a journey of self discovery and uncover the truth of who we are. On Day 19, we are discussing the concept of giving and receiving. The ego wants to receive endlessly, because it believes that it will fill the void of "not enough". The higher mind gives unconditionally, without expecting anything in return. They receive from the giving, the sharing, and the expressing. This is what actually fills that void. Action Step Today: Can you recognize that the act of giving is actually a gift for the giver and the receiver? Think about what you want to give to the world: your talents, gifts, or even a smile to a stranger. Practice giving today and notice how much better you feel. On Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik Chakraborty huddles with Mark Bruce and Duane Gibbs—co-founders of Huddle for Success and authors of Playbook for Life—about clear goal-setting, wealth strategies that last, and the mindset required to get unstuck. We dig into belief, accountability, and why a “huddle” (mastermind/team) beats solo hustle. Expect practical tools you can run today: the 6-task productivity method, journaling to design goals, and reframing burnout with smarter thinking over busier doing. About the guests : Mark Bruce and Duane Gibbs bring 70+ years of combined experience as entrepreneurs, educators, and performance coaches. Mark grew up with coaches, achieved semi-retirement by 36, and teaches clarity, desire, and belief as the core of achievement. Duane moved from construction and real estate investing into decades of national training, guiding thousands on mindset, strategy, and disciplined action. Together they run Huddle for Success and wrote Playbook for Life. Key takeaways : Write one clear goal in the present tense (“I am… I have…”) and revisit it daily to focus your mind. Use the 6-task method: each night list the six highest-impact actions for tomorrow, prioritize, and execute in order. Journal to see patterns, identify obstacles, and convert vague wishes into measurable goals and quick wins. Get comfortable being uncomfortable; momentum begins when you act before you feel perfectly ready. Belief beats busyness: hard work matters, but mindset and thinking differently create breakthroughs (the “open door” vs. the fly at the window). Replace solo grind with a huddle/mastermind—accountability, perspective, and better questions accelerate results. Don't compare your path to others; define success on your terms and celebrate progress. Combat burnout by simplifying inputs, aligning actions with purpose, and executing consistently, not endlessly. Common blocker at every level: self-doubt. Counter it with evidence (small wins), coaching, and clear why-statements (ask “why” seven times). Immediate action: grab the free Playbook for Life, schedule a 45-minute huddle, and run your first 6-task list today. How to connect with the guests : Playbook for Life and 45-minute Huddle Session - grab a free e-copy of guests' book "PLAYBOOK FOR LIFE" and a Free 45 minute Huddle session to help them gain clarity to an area that they just feel stuck in. Send us a textReady for a reality check that actually sticks? I walked into a firefighter tryout convinced I'd breeze through on grit and lifting strength—and nearly blacked out during the PACER test. That moment of shock became a catalyst: exposing my cardio blind spot, deflating my ego, and forcing a return to fundamentals that real performance demands. We unpack how a strict carnivore diet kept my weight steady while masking a glaring conditioning gap, and why “I hate cardio” isn't a strategy. I share the simple, sustainable interval plan that rebuilt capacity: short sprints, measured rest, and hybrid sessions that weave lifting with conditioning for a practical HIIT-style rhythm. No heroics—just consistent wins that retrain pace, breathing, and recovery. Along the way, I dig into the mindset traps that derail progress, from the seductive “I'm the exception” story to the endless “I'll start tomorrow” promise that never lands. There's also a hard truth about control: you can't change someone who isn't ready. We talk about the emotional toll of watching a partner or friend self-sabotage, the resentment that creeps in, and how to pivot toward responsibility you actually own. When you drop the urge to manage other people, you gain energy to improve your habits, set better boundaries, and model the change that invites others without pushing them away.If you're craving honest fitness talk, real-world habit change, and a mindset reset that respects biology, this one's for you. Join us as we go on a journey of self discovery and uncover the truth of who we are. On Day 17, we examine a belief that's often hidden underneath much of the chaos and suffering we create in our lives: The belief that something is wrong with you. Many of us are walking around thinking that we are a problem to solve -- If you just figure out what's wrong with you, you will feel better. But what if the belief that something is wrong with you is actually the only thing you need to shift? Welcome to the Like Attracts Like Mindshift Challenge! Over the next 21 days, we are dropping a podcast a day with our most powerful mindset shifts and techniques. Join us as we go on a journey of self discovery and uncover the truth of who we are. On Day 16, we examine a common fear for anyone looking to make a powerful change in their lives- the fear of failure. Once you realize that we are meant to be in a constant state of becoming, you see that failure cannot actually exist. Dissolving this fear is the key to unlocking the next steps to take! Action Step Today: What does the word "failure" mean to you? Can you see the lie in the idea that anything can be a failure? Sit with the understanding that failure cannot actually exist because nothing can ever truly be "done". With this new understanding, ask yourself what next steps to take. Welcome to the Like Attracts Like Mindshift Challenge! Over the next 21 days, we are dropping a podcast a day with our most powerful mindset shifts and techniques. Join us as we go on a journey of self discovery and uncover the truth of who we are. On Day 15, we dive into trusting through fear-- we often have a story that says that we "can't trust life" because of what "life has put us through". When we further examine this story, we can see that it's actually the actions we've taken out of fear that have created the suffering in our lives, and we then blamed life for it. So from now on, our job is to trust more than we fear life. Action Step Today: As you move through your day today, ask yourself where each choice you make it coming from: Is it coming from trust in life, or fear of life? Make separate boxes or sections on paper and write each choice down. Are more of your choices in the "fear" box or "trust" box at the end of the day? Welcome to the Like Attracts Like Mindshift Challenge! Over the next 21 days, we are dropping a podcast a day with our most powerful mindset shifts and techniques. Join us as we go on a journey of self discovery and uncover the truth of who we are. On Day 14, we discuss the concept of shifting from someone who is "trying" to be the person who has the life you want, to claiming "being" that person. Action Step Today: As you move through your day today, see if you can notice any language that is coming from "trying" energy.. This can sound like, "I'm working on..." "It'll happen someday"... "I'm trying" In situations where you catch yourself using this language, can you shift your thoughts and words in the moment? In this episode, I'm exploring the mindset shift data professionals need to make when moving into analytics and AI data product management. From how to ask the right questions to designing for meaningful adoption, I share four key ways to think more like a product manager, and less like a deliverables machine, so your data products earn applause instead of a shoulder shrug. Highlights/ Skip to: Why shift to analytics and AI data product management (00:34) From accuracy to impact and redefining success with AI and analytical data products (01:59) Key Idea 1: Moving from question asker (analyst) to problem seeker (product) (04:31) Key Idea 2: Designing change management into solutions; planning for adoption starts in the design phase (12:52) Key Idea 3: Creating tools so useful people can't imagine working without them. (26:23) Key Idea 4: Solving for unarticulated needs vs. active needs (34:24) Quotes from Today's Episode “Too many analytics teams are rewarded for accuracy instead of impact. Analysts give answers, and product people ask questions. The shift from analytics to product thinking isn't about tools or frameworks, it's about curiosity. It's moving from ‘here's what the data says' to ‘what problem are we actually trying to solve, and for whom?'That's where the real leverage is, in asking better questions, not just delivering faster answers.” “We often mistake usage for success.Adoption only matters if it's meaningful adoption. A dashboard getting opened a hundred times doesn't mean it's valuable... it might just mean people can't find what they need.Real success is when your users say, ‘I can't imagine doing my job without this.'That's the level of usefulness we should be designing for.” “The most valuable insights aren't always the ones people ask for. Solving active problems is good, it's necessary. But the big unlock happens when you start surfacing and solving latent problems, the ones people don't think to ask for. Those are the moments when users say, ‘Oh wow, that changes everything.'That's how data teams evolve from service providers to strategic partners.” “Here's a simple but powerful shift for data teams: know who your real customer is. Most data teams think their customer is the stakeholder who requested the work… But the real customer is the end user whose life or decision should get better because of it. When you start designing for that person, not just the requester, everything changes: your priorities, your design, even what you choose to measure.” Links Need 1:1 help to navigate these questions and align your data product work to your career? Welcome to the Like Attracts Like Mindshift Challenge! Over the next 21 days, we are dropping a podcast a day with our most powerful mindset shifts and techniques. Join us as we go on a journey of self discovery and uncover the truth of who we are. On Day 13, we discuss the power of your imagination, and how we can use it to create our dream life. Everything you see was created inside of someone's mind first-- which means that anything you create is going to start in your mind! Action Step Today: Sit and look around the room at the items around you-- the desk, water bottle, pen, etc. Where did these items come from?
