Does public speaking anxiety stop you from saying “yes” to opportunities to share your voice? As therapy group practice owners, many of us find ourselves being pulled toward leadership beyond the therapy room—whether that's hosting retreats, teaching workshops, speaking at conferences, or simply leading internal trainings with more presence and ease. But here's the thing: public speaking anxiety is very real—and faking it till you make it doesn't always work. In this episode, I'm joined by vocal and speaking confidence coach Linda Ugelow to dig into how to overcome fear of public speaking—not by pushing through it, but by healing what's underneath it. Because visibility isn't just about you—it's about the mission and message of your therapy group practice reaching the people who need it most. Here's what we're covering: Why public speaking anxiety affects so many practice owners—even those used to talking all day in session The real reason “just practicing more” doesn't solve it (and what to do instead) Grounded, practical public speaking anxiety tricks that actually work—like EFT, visualization, and body-based rituals How unresolved stories and inner critics fuel the public speaking anxiety—and how to rewire those beliefs Why public speaking is a powerful growth lever for your therapy group practice—and how to say yes to the mic with less dread If you've ever thought, “I should be doing more speaking, but I can't get past the public speaking anxiety,” this one's for you. Thank You To Our Partners, The Institute, AutoFlow, AutoLeap, Shop Dog Marketing and In-BoundIn this episode - our host, Craig O'Neill and regular guest, fellow toastmaster, and friend of the show, Evan Wisner, dive into the root of the fear of public speaking. Also known as glossophobia - it is a fear that is shared with 76% of all people.Evan speaks on this topic with the heart of a counselor and the mind of an emotional intelligence (EQ) expert. It's appropriate that this topic follows episode 019 - Reframing - as Evan highlights the similarities of anxiety versus excitement - and how an individual's perspective will influence their experience.Science Fiction fans who know Frank Herberts, Dune may be familiar with the Litany Against Fear. “...I must not fear, fear is the mind killer…” Evan recites the full version of the litany from memory, and interprets its meaning in a simple way that will allow those who experience glossophobia to move through it, experience excitement instead of anxiety and share your truth. This is another enjoyable conversation between Evan and Craig with many takeaways. Jeannette tackles the often daunting topic of public speaking, exploring the common fears and blockers that many individuals face when it comes to sharing their message with the world, and emphasising the importance of mindset and preparation. KEY TAKEAWAYS Your mindset is crucial when it comes to public speaking. Believing in your ability to deliver a message can significantly impact your performance. Remember the quote: "Those who think they can and those who think they can't are both usually right." Being organised and well-prepared is essential. This includes knowing your topic, practicing your speech, and ensuring all technical aspects (like audio and slides) are in order before you take the stage. Consistent practice helps build confidence. It's important to rehearse your speech multiple times, ideally in front of a mirror or with a trusted friend, to become comfortable with the material and delivery. Perfection is not the goal; being authentic and human can resonate more with your audience. Accept that nerves are normal and can be channeled positively to enhance your delivery. BEST MOMENTS "When you actually do put yourself out to the world and you have a message to share, you can do so much good." "Those who think they can and those who think they can't are both usually right." "If you have a message to share with the world, then there is no better way to do that than to actually put yourself out there." "Recognise the fact you stood up there on a stage, you delivered a message, that in itself is a huge achievement." "Feedback is the breakfast of champions. That's how we improve. It's how we grow." For aspiring leaders and women in corporate careers, the ability to speak confidently in public is a crucial skill that can propel your professional growth. The "Her Leadership Coach" podcast featuring Silke Herald, a clinical hypnotherapist, offers invaluable insights into conquering this common fear that often holds women back from reaching their full potential in leadership roles. With over 15 years of experience in helping women overcome anxiety, fears, phobias and self-limiting beliefs, Silke blends science, practicality and warmth in equal measure and treats every person as a unique individual. It is such a relief to clients that with Silke they finally feel really seen and heard. Silke's personal journey from social anxiety to becoming a hypnotherapy practitioner is a testament to the power of addressing our subconscious beliefs. As she explains, the fear of public speaking is a learned behaviour, often rooted in childhood experiences or significant emotional events. For women in leadership positions, understanding and overcoming these underlying thought patterns can be transformative, allowing you to communicate your ideas with confidence and authority in corporate settings. One of the most powerful takeaways from Silke's interview is the importance of authenticity in public speaking. As she wisely notes, "It is far more important to be you and to actually have something like set an intention for. What do you want the audience to get out of this?" This advice is particularly relevant for women in leadership who may feel pressure to emulate male colleagues. By embracing your unique voice and perspective, you can connect more genuinely with your audience and make a lasting impact. The techniques Silke shares, such as pacing thoughts and leaning into physical sensations of anxiety, offer practical tools for aspiring leaders to manage their public speaking fears. These strategies, combined with the understanding that most people are too preoccupied with their own nervousness to notice yours, can help you approach speaking opportunities with greater confidence and poise. => Free resource for listeners: 10 minute free "Deep Relaxation and Letting Go Off Stress" Hypnosis Recording https://australianhypnotherapycentre.com.au/ Connect with Rochelle Join us in the facebook group for support, conversation, guidance and fun specifically for women in leadership and aspiring women leaders https://www.facebook.com/groups/hlwactiongroup https://www.herleadershipway.com https://www.linkedin.com/rochellemarie_hlw rochelle@herleadershipway.com Don't forget to subscribe and leave a review if you found this episode helpful. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Frank Winters, author of the book 10 Little Rules for Sharing Your Story. A father of two fantastic men, public speaker, geographer, and explorer, Frank Winters was intrigued and motivated by a random fact: one of the things he loves the most – public speaking – is the thing most feared by many. His work (as Geographic Information Officer of NYS, President of the National States Geographic Information Council and Chair of the National Pandemic GIS Task Force) gives Frank a breadth of professional experiences to draw from. Outside of work, Frank coached a youth mountain bike race team to a state championship and served for more than two decades as President of a non-profit ski area. Paying back a lifelong debt to the Boy Scouts of America, he serves as Section Director for the National Camp School wilderness guide program. A recent annual tradition for Frank and his oldest son is racing the 90-mile Adirondack Canoe Classic. In my book review, I stated 10 Little Rules for Sharing Your Story explores his rules for public speaking. However, these rules will help more than those speaking behind a podium. Do you want to be a better communicator with those you love? Do you want to provide a legacy of stories to your children? Do you want to connect more over coffee and bagels? Then 10 Little Rules for Sharing Your Story is the right book for you. Not only does Frank share his rules, but he provides notebooking pages so you can create your own rules around storytelling. My favorite rule is #6 - Think Beyond the Elevator Pitch. Frank believes that if you have something important to say, you should be able to adjust it to the time given to you. If you only have 7 seconds, what would you say? What about two minutes? What about twenty? By thinking of our stories this way, we can learn what parts are the most important and the most intriguing. I will definitely be using this idea in my own speaking! I highly recommend this 10 Little Rules book.
