In this episode of The Expert Edge, Colin gets real about one of the most universal fears out there - speaking in front of people. Whether it's a live audience, a Zoom room, or a podcast mic, that nervous energy you feel before sharing your message isn't a flaw - it's a signal. Last week, I discussed the fastest and easiest way to solve public speaking fear (utilizing stories and examples), and I mentioned on that episode that most people have some type of nervousness when they stand up to present in front of others. But what do you do if your fear is more intense than just little jitters. Well, on this episode I'm going to tell you all about glossophobia, the extreme fear of public speaking. I'll tell you a lot of the misconceptions people seem to have with this "phobia", how many people really have it, what the symptoms are, and how you can know if you truly have it or not. Public speaking is a vital part of most working people's day to day life and knowing the difference between typical public speaking nervousness and actual glossophobia can make treating your fear correctly way easier and save you wasted time. So stick around as I go over Glossophobia, the fear of public speaking, and keep an eye out for the next episode later this week where I tell you all about how to treat it.Show Notes: How to Overcome Glossophobia (The Fear of Public Speaking)(https://www.fearlesspresentations.com/how-to-overcome-glossophobia-an-irrational-fear-of-public-speaking/)

Also known as glossophobia - it is a fear that is shared with 76% of all people.Evan speaks on this topic with the heart of a counselor and the mind of an emotional intelligence (EQ) expert. It's appropriate that this topic follows episode 019 - Reframing - as Evan highlights the similarities of anxiety versus excitement - and how an individual's perspective will influence their experience.Science Fiction fans who know Frank Herberts, Dune may be familiar with the Litany Against Fear. “...I must not fear, fear is the mind killer…” Evan recites the full version of the litany from memory, and interprets its meaning in a simple way that will allow those who experience glossophobia to move through it, experience excitement instead of anxiety and share your truth. This is another enjoyable conversation between Evan and Craig with many takeaways. Jeannette tackles the often daunting topic of public speaking, exploring the common fears and blockers that many individuals face when it comes to sharing their message with the world, and emphasising the importance of mindset and preparation. KEY TAKEAWAYS Your mindset is crucial when it comes to public speaking. Believing in your ability to deliver a message can significantly impact your performance. Remember the quote: "Those who think they can and those who think they can't are both usually right." Being organised and well-prepared is essential. This includes knowing your topic, practicing your speech, and ensuring all technical aspects (like audio and slides) are in order before you take the stage. Consistent practice helps build confidence. It's important to rehearse your speech multiple times, ideally in front of a mirror or with a trusted friend, to become comfortable with the material and delivery. Perfection is not the goal; being authentic and human can resonate more with your audience. Accept that nerves are normal and can be channeled positively to enhance your delivery. BEST MOMENTS "When you actually do put yourself out to the world and you have a message to share, you can do so much good." "Those who think they can and those who think they can't are both usually right." "If you have a message to share with the world, then there is no better way to do that than to actually put yourself out there." "Recognise the fact you stood up there on a stage, you delivered a message, that in itself is a huge achievement." "Feedback is the breakfast of champions. That's how we improve. It's how we grow."   This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Frank Winters, author of the book 10 Little Rules for Sharing Your Story. A father of two fantastic men, public speaker, geographer, and explorer, Frank Winters was intrigued and motivated by a random fact: one of the things he loves the most – public speaking – is the thing most feared by many. His work (as Geographic Information Officer of NYS, President of the National States Geographic Information Council and Chair of the National Pandemic GIS Task Force) gives Frank a breadth of  professional experiences to draw from. Outside of work, Frank coached a youth mountain bike race team to a state championship and served for more than two decades as President of a non-profit ski area. Paying back a lifelong debt to the Boy Scouts of America, he serves as Section Director for the National Camp School wilderness guide program. A recent annual tradition for Frank and his oldest son is racing the 90-mile Adirondack Canoe Classic. In my book review, I stated 10 Little Rules for Sharing Your Story explores his rules for public speaking. However, these rules will help more than those speaking behind a podium. Do you want to be a better communicator with those you love? Do you want to provide a legacy of stories to your children? Do you want to connect more over coffee and bagels? Then 10 Little Rules for Sharing Your Story is the right book for you. Not only does Frank share his rules, but he provides notebooking pages so you can create your own rules around storytelling. My favorite rule is #6 - Think Beyond the Elevator Pitch. Frank believes that if you have something important to say, you should be able to adjust it to the time given to you. If you only have 7 seconds, what would you say? What about two minutes? What about twenty? By thinking of our stories this way, we can learn what parts are the most important and the most intriguing. I will definitely be using this idea in my own speaking! I highly recommend this 10 Little Rules book. Did you know people are more afraid of public speaking than spiders, heights and death? In this episode Natalie and Corp discuss how they have overcome their own fears of public speaking. They'll also talk about their first times giving speeches in high school and how they've evolved to now speaking professionally in fireside chats, panel discussions and keynote addresses. You will hear great advice on how to capitalize on your next public speaking opportunity, as well as some bad advice that is sure to result in public shame should you follow it. They also read a couple more horrible boss confessions from listeners that were too wild not to include. Stay tuned for a behind the scenes look at wild west commercial shoots, a desperate plea for an invite to a yacht party, and a tale of four brave women's battle against an eight-legged monster.
