But if they do make a third one, it can't be about basketball, right? Right? In addition to trying to figure that out, this episode is full of other hot goss about the newest installment in what is turning out to be a very complicated and problematic legacy. Space Jam: A New Legacy is on HBO Max until August 16th, but it'll definitely go back on there at some point after the theatrical run. Here's a freebie: since we talk Animaniacs in this episode, the 1999 film Wakko's Wish is currently streaming on Hulu. Ian remembers liking it when he was, like, four. Content Warning: We talk about Pepe Le Pew (AKA "Tune Skunk") and lack of consent. We also briefly discuss racism in early animation.

If you're confused as to why we appear to be breaking from tradition and covering a comedy special, don't worry; whether or not this is a movie is one of many deliciously post-modern questions we tackle! If you need any more convincing, maybe it'll help to know that in addition to being released on Netflix Inside is also getting a theatrical release for one night only on July 22nd. Special guest appearance this week from our dog Chief and his devastating farts. Content Warning: We briefly mention the topic of self-harm in this special and the specials of Maria Bamford. Inside covers topics ranging from self-harm and mental illness (specifically depression, derealization, and self-loathing) to systemic oppression and environmental degradation. While there is no violence or harmful language, many of the topics are quite heavy and potentially triggering.

Full of spoilers. It's episodes like this when all pretense is forfeit and it becomes clear that our sole desire is to yell about anime. #couplegoals This movie is streaming on Funimation both subbed and dubbed, though if you watch the latter I fear for your soul. Do NOT rent it on Vudu for $15 like we did initially, because Vudu has this fun feature where you can't change the audio language so you'll be forced to watch it dubbed into English. Content Warning: A lot of stylized anime violence, mostly due to swords and stabbing. There is a lot of blood, death, and some images of bloody corpses of a family. A character is shown at the point of cutting off their own head with a sword multiple times in order to escape a dream state.

See the full content warning after the episode. We watched four movies, but the twist is that we only finished two of them. So this week we're discussing Black Narcissus and Mädchen in Uniform (which we finished) alongside Hyenas and Two Days, One Night (which we did not). Ian had a master plan for his picks and it ran into a few obstacles. Listen and all shall be explained. Black Narcissus (1947) is on HBO Max. Mädchen in Uniform (1931) is free on YouTube with good captions and okay-enough image quality. Hyenas (1992) is on Kanopy with certain subscriptions. We rented Two Days, One Night (2014) from Vudu for three bucks. Content Warning: Black Narcissus has white actors playing three of the four main South Asian roles, which is deplorable. Some racist viewpoints from the characters and mild violence, including one death by falling. Mädchen in Uniform has a scene where a character is going to attempt self-harm by jumping, which does not happen. The half of Hyenas that we saw deals with poverty, and discusses forced castration and murder.

See the full content warning after the episode description. Full disclosure: this week kicked our butts and we debated not even recording an episode. The good news is that we did it and had a lot of fun with it. Thank you guys for continuing to listen in every week. Ian picked this week, and his theme for his three films was "sports movies I'd actually want to watch." We talk a lot about commodification of athletes, but also about how much we like Jonah Hill. There's truly something for everyone here. High Flying Bird is only available on Netflix. We rented Whip It and Moneyball from Reel Hollywood Video in McMinnville, OR. They're probably streaming somewhere, but rent them from a local shop if you can! Content Warning: Again, keeping track of content across three films is tough. I feel fairly confident saying that there aren't major triggers in High Flying Bird or Moneyball. Whip It has some violence, a little bit of blood here and there, and gaslighting.

Still, this Wednesday morning we are very excited to present Temperance's first triple pick: Deep Blue Sea x The Shallows x The Meg! Neither of us can stand the thought of sharks, but we very much like shark movies. And also LL Cool J and Blake Lively. Be sure to keep your eyes on our Insta for a chance to enter our latest giveaway and determine our fateful three films for the last Tuesday of March! We rented all three of these from Reel Hollywood Video! If you don't have an awesome video rental store in your neck of the woods, I think you can rent all three of these on Vudu for something like four bucks each. Content Warning: I'll be honest, I didn't think about having to do a content warning for three separate films. I recommend using the IMDb Parents' Guide to check each individual film. The general idea is that sharks eat a lot of people, and there is gratuitous blood and dismemberment. Also each one of these films features violence against animals, which we discuss during the episode because it's such a problematic element of the shark movie genre.

It was and is SO GOOD. We talk about counterculture movements, sexuality, and Godzilla. We learn about Woodstock? More important than all of this, we came away from the past few weeks with a deeper understanding of what documentaries can do, as well as how they create a whole host of sociocultural tangles. Hopefully you guys dug it. Stay tuned for next month's theme/preoccupation! Crip Camp is streaming on Netflix, I think exclusively. Content Warning: There are a lot of ableist slurs in this documentary, which happens when you have a bunch of reporters covering disability rights activists. There's also a very difficult sequence showing the rampant abuses inside an institution known as Willowbrook where disabled individuals (including children) were imprisoned and all but left to rot.

We also discuss whether or not its possible for something to be non-narrative and the complicated nature of a documentary that explores so so many different cultures. And we FINALLY talk about The Hobbit movies, which is possibly the most divisive subject that exists in our relationship. THIS IS FREE ON YOUTUBE. The quality doesn't look half bad, either. It's also free with Amazon Prime and you can get it on iTunes and stuff. There's a film on Kanopy called Baraka, but its unrelated. Content Warning: This is possibly the most content-warning heavy movie we've watched yet. While we don't discuss any of these things, this documentary features footage shot at a concentration camp, intensely unpleasant scenes of factory farming that border on violent, and a funeral cremation where human remains are prominently visible. This movie is exclusively available for physical purchase from the director's website, www.echocave.net. Unless you know Ian, in which case he'll lend it to you. Content Warning: The Beaver Trilogy contains intense imagery related to self-harm and suicide, though no self-harm occurs in the film. There are also homophobic attitudes expressed by unsympathetic characters. We talk at length about the use of violent acts by film-makers and whether or not it's appropriate. In doing so we discuss self-harm and briefly mention sexual assault.

    Wolf Breath: Origins

We're six episodes in, so it's time for some dramatic backstory. This week, Temperance picked the excellent 2012 film Wolf Children and it set off a deep dive into her weeb origins. Incidentally, Ian did a great job of not getting caught up on werewolf mechanics like he normally does. We're literally about to go camping so forgive the significant lack of editing; we know you've come to expect perfection.

Ian picked this week, and you can tell that he's having a hard time staying away from horror films. He chose the 1932 mad science extravaganza Doctor X because he thought it would be tame. Joke's on him: it's pre-code, so it features cannibalism, sadism, hearts in jars, moonbeams, more cannibalism, an elusive gay sextangle, and a plucky journalist who gets smoked out in a room full of skeletons. Something worked, because Temperance liked it. Also, we talk about Jeff Goldblum again.

The year is 2003; the movie is Eddie's Million Dollar Cook-Off. Ian had never seen a Disney Channel Original Movie in his life, so this is definitely Temperance's pick. Fun fact: this movie is actually about Bridget Simons, and if you're not comfortable with that you can jog on. We also get into gender roles, problematic armchair critiques, and Emeril Lagasse. BAM.

We be real sleepy in this particular episode, which is all about the 2002 silent ballet horror film Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary. It's Ian's first pick on the show. It gets the conversation flowing around such topics as women's bodily autonomy, xenophobia, and some real interesting bits where we talk about the complex relationship between stage productions and silent films. Also, we tease the wrong movie for next week's episode. Come get unclean with us you lusty vampire babes.

This, our first episode, was Temperance's pick! She chose The Ramen Girl, a 2008 film and a masterpiece of cultural appropriation. Neither of us knew a thing about it going in so you can't blame us too much. Listen as we reel from the late Brittany Murphy's culinary outing in a poor, unsuspecting, and utterly wasted Tokyo. Also, we were sleepy and there are fireworks going off in the background.
