Special Episode: Frederick Wiseman, acclaimed filmmaker

The Cinematography Podcast Special: Frederick Wiseman With the passing of documentarian Frederick Wiseman, here is a re-release of our 2020 interview. He discusses City Hall, Titticut Follies, High School and more. Wiseman was a prolific filmmaker, making 45 films over 50 years.  Wiseman's family and Zipporah Films kindly request that you support your local PBS affiliate or independent bookstore in Frederick Wiseman's memory. Frederick Wiseman has proven that, in his words, “If you hang around long enough, you can collect enough material and cut a dramatic narrative film out of real life.” A Frederick Wiseman documentary has a very specific style- no narration, no identifying lower-third captions, no interviews and no camera movement. The viewer simply watches the story unfold as a slice of life. The subject is usually a mundane, everyday institution that many might simply overlook. Wiseman feels his films are not merely observational, but that he actively makes decisions on how to sculpt them into a narrative during the editing process. He enjoys making documentary films because he finds comedy and drama exist in ordinary life, just as much as anyone would find in fiction. Wiseman shies away from the terms “documentary” and “cinema verité”- he thinks the term "movie" is good enough because “documentary” is something that sounds like it's supposed to be good for you. For Wiseman's film, City Hall, he had the idea that recording what happens in a city hall would be a good inside look into the machinery of how a city runs. Boston City Hall happened to be the only one that gave him permission. A staffer of the mayor had seen his films and liked the idea. Unlike some of Wiseman's other movies, Boston mayor Marty Walsh was a central character- as the leader of the city, he is very involved in seeing that it runs smoothly. Before he became a director, Wiseman was a lawyer and law school teacher. He always wanted to be a director, but had no experience with movies. He saw an opportunity to become a producer when he optioned a novel called The Cool World and asked director Shirley Clark to helm it, which helped demystify the process for him. Wiseman's first documentary, 1967's Titticut Follies, was about the Bridgewater Prison for the Criminally Insane. He knew the warden from his years as a lawyer and was able to get permission to shoot at the facility and gain access to the inmates. His next film, High School was released in 1968. "After shooting in a prison for the insane, high school seemed to be the next logical progression," he jokes. Part of Wiseman's process is to find the film as he shoots, venturing forth purposefully blind and with little preparation. For him, it all emerges in the editing process. Wiseman always does his own editing and watches each piece of footage-generally about 150 hours of it- to decide how to structure each sequence. Find Frederick Wiseman's documentaries. You can see almost all of Wiseman's documentaries on Kanopy for free with your library card. Sponsored by Hot Rod Cameras: www.hotrodcameras.com LIKE AND FOLLOW US, send fan mail or suggestions! Love isn't soft this week — it's sharp. In Valentine's Week Horror History (Feb 9–15), we trace the anniversaries where romance curdles into obsession, suburbia turns sinister, and the holiday's heart-shaped sheen hides something mean underneath.Inside this episode (Quick Hits + Spotlight):Feb 11, 1981 — My Bloody Valentine: blue-collar slasher dread in a mining town where the tunnels feel alive and the “tradition” is murder. (U.S. this week: free via Kanopy / buy-rent on major VOD.) Feb 13, 2009 — Friday the 13th (reboot): Jason's modern-era brutality — fast, nasty, and built like a greatest-hits mixtape of the franchise's worst impulses. (U.S. this week: Netflix and Tubi, plus VOD.) Feb 14, 1991 — The Silence of the Lambs: prestige terror and psychological horror that changed the culture — and proved “thriller” can still be nightmare fuel. (U.S. this week: AMC+.) Feb 13, 2019 — Happy Death Day 2U: time-loop mayhem with real heart and a wicked sense of humor. (U.S. this week: HBO Max.) Deep-Cut Spotlight:Feb 12, 1975 — The Stepford Wives: no monster suit required — just a perfect town, perfect smiles, and a nightmare hiding behind domestic bliss. (U.S. this week: Tubi.) Birthday Roll (4): Emma Roberts (1991), Natalie Dormer (1982), Simon Pegg (1970), Claire Bloom (1931).Weekly Recommendation (Valentine's “bouquet” stack): Misery (1990) (MGM+), Audition (1999), The Fly (1986) (Tubi), plus modern Valentine carnage with Heart Eyes (2025) (Netflix) and Companion (2025) (HBO Max).  If you like your romance with slashers, psychological dread, body horror, and suburban nightmares, this week's timeline is a whole box of chocolates… and at least one of them bites back.

Today's episode was recorded in August 2025.BlackBerry is an unusual, against-the-grain movie, much like the ground-shaking device it's about. I'm very happy to have my father, Esmail Amid-Hozour, back on the podcast, along with my dear friend Kathy Garber, to break down this 2023 indie film and what makes it work, and where it stumbles.Director Matt Johnson pulls off something genuinely impressive here. The film, like the device itself, is far from perfect, but it captures the nostalgia of a pre-iPhone and pre-Android era with real energy. The story of RIM, Research In Motion, and the rise of the BlackBerry is chaotic, fast-moving, and sometimes messy, just like the movie telling it.Does that chaos work for the film, or does it hold it back? We don't fully agree, and that difference of opinion drives much of this spirited conversation. Where do you land on this one?BlackBerry is streaming now on Hulu and Kanopy, and is available to rent on most major platforms.

Dr. Bogunovic is an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and the medical director of the alcohol, drug, and addiction outpatient program at McLean Hospital. and Holly directed the documentary As Prescribed. In today's discussion, we dive into the ongoing benzodiazepine crisis in the United States, with over 92 million prescriptions written each year for medications like Ativan, Valium, Xanax, and Klonopin. We discuss the origin of those drugs in the 1970s as treatments for anxiety and how they lead to tremendous physical dependency. Holly shares her experience with the neurological effects she suffered after long-term use of Klonopin, and we examine challenges in psychiatric care, the need for informed consent, and the impact of social media. We also cover the role of lifestyle, the need for psychotherapy and psychosocial support, and the significance of hope. This conversation is truly invaluable! Given how frequently benzodiazepines get prescribed, everyone must understand their associated risks and considerations. IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: How prescribing practices have evolved over the last two decades The significant consequences older adults face when they suddenly stop using benzodiazepines  Holly shares how doctors misinformed her when she began taking Klonopin.  Holly describes the benzodiazepine-induced symptoms and cognitive issues she experienced Why people must get informed about the long-term effects of benzodiazepines when consenting to take them How benzodiazepines work in the body and impact the brain Why benzodiazepines are ineffective when used long-term for insomnia The challenges certain people face when accessing psychiatric care What is BIND, and what are its symptoms? Die Hard On A Blank
ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 (2005)!

Die Hard On A Blank

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 5, 2025 70:21

It's Die Hard in a police station! This week on DIE HARD ON A BLANK we're battening down the hatches with Ethan Hawke and Laurence Fishburne as we discuss the 2005 remake of ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13!After a botched undercover drug bust results in the deaths of two of his fellow team members, traumatized Detroit cop Jake Roenick (Ethan Hawke) now works an unambitious desk job, where he oversees a quiet, remote precinct that's about to be decommissioned. However, when a busload of prisoners – including notorious gangster Marion Bishop (Laurence Fishburne) - are forced to take refuge at said precinct because of a brutal New Year's Eve snowstorm, Jake suddenly finds himself called back into action when mysterious masked gunmen assault the police station… After comparing and contrasting this film with John Carpenter's original 1976 classic (itself a loose remake of RIO BRAVO), the guys discuss the myriad DIE HARD (and DIE HARD 2) DNA on display in this pressure-cooker siege scenario, while musing on the possibility that the echoes of previous wars (Vietnam, the Iraq invasion) may be reverberating inside both versions of the story. They also discuss the idea of the “action-horror” subgenre in this surprisingly gory picture, as well as Ethan Hawke's post-TRAINING DAY action-hero run. Awards are handed out to the stellar ensemble cast in the DIE HARD OSCARS section, and as always the episode culminates with a cheeky edition of the DOUBLE JEOPARDY trivia quiz!TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isoX0zcyG-4At the time of release, ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 is streaming on Starz and Philo in the US, and is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV/iTunes, YouTube, Fandango and all the usual platforms! It's Die Hard in a taxi! This week on DIE HARD ON A BLANK we're taking a ride with Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx as we discuss Michael Mann's exemplary 2004 thriller COLLATERAL!Fastidious cab driver Max (Jamie Foxx) picks up a mysterious passenger named Vincent (Tom Cruise), who, impressed with Max's driving and knowledge of the sprawling city, offers to hire him for the night while he makes a few stops around LA. However, Max soon discovers that Vincent is in fact a contract killer, who then forces Max to drive him around the city so that he can assassinate a list of people involved in a massive federal case. As an ordinary guy pitted against a skilled and ruthless hitman, Max must somehow find a way to survive and stop Vincent from completing his deadly mission. After outlining the surprisingly dense and detailed amount of ‘DIE HARD DNA' in this jazz-infused LA neo-noir, the guys wrestle with a fundamental question: is this the greatest thriller ever made? They get into the film's philosophical themes, discuss the remarkable against-type performances from the two leads (and the stellar supporting cast) and place this film in context within Michael Mann's filmography. The guys wrap things up with a highly competitive edition of the DIE HARD OSCARS (there's a ton of love for Mark Ruffalo) and the always entertaining DOUBLE JEOPARDY trivia quiz!TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JDf2zIFgO8At the time of release, COLLATERAL is streaming on Paramount Plus and Kanopy in the US, and is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV/iTunes, YouTube, Fandango and all the usual platforms!
