This week on the Podcast, it's Kristina's turn to bloviate alongside Editor-in-Chief Elliot Williams. First up in the news: our fresh new contest has drawn three entries already! That's right, the 2024 Tiny Games Challenge is underway. You have until September 10th to show us your best tiny game, whether that means tiny hardware, tiny code, or a tiny BOM. Then it's on to What's That Sound, which sounded familiar to Kristina, but she couldn't place it. Can you get it? Can you figure it out? Can you guess what's making that sound? If you can, and your number comes up, you get a special Hackaday Podcast t-shirt. Then it's on to the hacks, beginning with a hack to print metal and a way to weld wood, along with a photo-resistor-based, single-pixel camera. We'll talk desiccants carbon fiber, and Baron Harkonnen. Finally, we discuss the troubles of keeping hygroscopic materials from degrading, and have a klatch about Keebin' with Kristina. Check out the links over on Hackaday if you want to follow along, and as always, tell us what you think about this episode in the comments!

The result is another pod over three hours. Sorry to everybody for the time commitment this requires. I think I forgot to mention that the 2021 Baron Harkonnen must have been based on Brando's Kurtz. Also we forgot to mention the interestingness of Paul Atreides as a messiah built by the people rather than descended from the divine. Also we forgot to mention that there is not just a 1984 version of Dune, but also a 1984 Green Knight movie with Sean Connery and Ator the Fighting Eagle and also there's a 1984 Annette Funicello movie.
Dune: Part Two, brought to life by Denis Villeneuve, continues Paul Atreides' journey among the Fremen after his people's tragic fate on Arrakis, as he seeks revenge against Baron Harkonnen and the Emperor.
Why Do Hacks Feel the Need to Destroy Everything This week on the podcast, Brian and Darryl review the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender Series from Netflix and the Warner Bros. feature film Dune: Part 2. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 AtLAB: 5:44 Dune Part 2: 37:28 Avatar the Last Airbender (Season 1) (Netflix) Out of 10 This Really is the Story of the Ember Island Players Darryl: 4.5/10 Brian: 4/10 Summary In the live-action adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” on Netflix, Aang, a young Airbender who has been frozen in an iceberg for 100 years, awakens to find the world ravaged by the Fire Nation. As the Avatar, the only individual capable of mastering all four elements (Water, Earth, Fire, and Air), Aang embarks on a journey to restore balance to the world. He joins forces with siblings Katara, a water bender, and Sokka, a talented Southern Water Tribe warrior, and together they face challenges and adventures as Aang trains to hone his bending abilities and fulfill his destiny. This remix of the beloved animated series bastardizes the core elements of the original story while presenting it through a live-action lens. Cast: Main Characters: – Aang: Gordon Cormier – Katara: Kiawentiio Tarbell – Sokka: Ian Ousley – Prince Zuko: Dallas Liu – Uncle Iroh: Paul Sun-Hyung Lee – Azula: Elizabeth Yu – Fire Lord Ozai: Daniel Dae Kim Supporting Characters: – Suki: Maria Zhang – Yukari (Suki’s mother): Tamlyn Tomita – Gran Gran (Katara and Sokka’s grandmother): Casey Camp-Horinek – Jet: Sebastian Amoruso – The Mechanist: Danny Pudi – Commander Zhao: Ken Leung Episodes Episode 1 Title: Aang Directed By: Michael Goi Written by: Albert Kim & Michael Dante DiMartino & Bryan Konietzko Episode 2 Title: Warriors Directed By: Michael Goi Written By: Joshua Hale Fialkov Episode 3 Title: Omashu Directed By: Michael Balfry Written By: Christine Boylan Episode 4 Title: Into the Dark Directed By: Albert Kim Written By: Keely MacDonald Episode 5 Title: The Southern Air Temple Directed By: Lauren Lynex Written By: Lauren Lynex Episode 6 Title: The Spirit World Directed By: Arun A. Casting Choices: Some viewers find certain actors, particularly the young leads, to be well-cast and embody the characters’ personalities effectively. Negatives: Pacing and Storytelling Choices: Some critics found the pacing of the first season to be slow and felt the show condensed plot points from the original series, potentially hindering character development and impacting the overall story flow. Deviation from the Source Material: While some viewers appreciate the show’s attempt to adapt the story for a live-action format, others felt certain changes to the narrative or character arcs were unnecessary and took away from the essence of the original. Budget The budget for the live-action adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” on Netflix is reported to be $15 million per episode. This means the entire first season, consisting of eight episodes, reportedly cost $120 million to produce. Dune: Part 2 (2024) Out of 10 Why Did Lady Jessica Go Full Super-Villains Darryl: 6.25/10 Brian: 4/10 Summary Picking up after the events of the first film, Paul Atreides seeks refuge with the Fremen, the indigenous people of the harsh desert planet Arrakis. He continues to develop his prophetic visions and abilities, while also forming a bond with Chani, a young Fremen warrior. Meanwhile, the Harkonnens, House Atreides’s bitter rivals, remain in control of Arrakis and continue to exploit its valuable resource, spice. Paul grapples with the weight of his destiny and the potential for a violent future. He must navigate complex alliances and face difficult choices as he ponders the potential consequences of his actions. The film explores themes of revenge, destiny, and the struggle for power. It delves deeper into the intricate world-building of Frank Herbert’s original novel, introducing new characters and factions. Cast and Crew Director: Denis Villeneuve, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jon Spaihts based on Frank Herbert’s novel. Main Cast: – Timothée Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides, the young heir who embraces his destiny among the Fremen. – Zendaya reprises her role as Chani, the Fremen warrior who becomes Paul’s love interest. – Rebecca Ferguson is back as Lady Jessica, Paul’s Bene Gesserit mother. – Javier Bardem returns as Stilgar, the leader of the Sietch Tabr Fremen tribe. – Josh Brolin portrays Gurney Halleck, Paul’s loyal warrior mentor. New additions to the cast include: – Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, the cunning nephew of Baron Harkonnen. – Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, the Emperor’s daughter with a complex role to play. – Christopher Walken joins the cast in an undisclosed role. – Léa Seydoux as Lady Fenring. Other notable crew members: – Hans Zimmer returns to compose the score, building upon the unique soundscape established in the first film. – Greig Fraser serves as the cinematographer, capturing the vast landscapes and intricate details of Arrakis. Dune: Part Two – Production and Budget Production: – Development for Dune: Part Two began after Legendary Entertainment acquired the film and television rights for Dune in 2016. – Director Denis Villeneuve signed on in 2017 with the intention of making a two-part adaptation due to the novel’s complexity. – Originally, production contracts were only secured for the first film. The green light for the sequel depended on the first film’s success. – Despite Villeneuve’s concerns about the sequel’s green light due to the first film’s hybrid release (theatrical and HBO Max), it received the go-ahead, allowing them to move forward. – Filming for Dune: Part Two took place primarily in Jordan, Italy, and Hungary, with additional locations utilized as needed. Budget: – The estimated budget for Dune: Part Two is $190 million, which is significantly higher than the first film’s $165 million budget. – This increased cost can be attributed to several factors, including: – Expanding the scope of the story and world-building compared to the first film. – Bringing in new and established actors with higher salaries. – Creating complex visual effects and sets to bring the fictional universe to life. Terry and Joe are trying to figure out the difference between sci-fi and fantasy as they return to the Lynch side of the podcast to discuss his big budget studio effort, Dune (1984).Despite issues with the voice-over narration, the compacted back half and too many characters, we don't actually mind this one. The costumes are wild, the FX is good, and we want more of whatever is going on with Baby Alicia Witt.Plus: the problematic queer coding of Harkonnen, Jodorowsky's Dune, and a silver lining to the film's box office failure.Reference: Bessie Yuill. It's now ranked #1 on Google and all the search engines on the subject, and Scott has expanded it into an entire book, The Theology of Sci-Fi: The Christian's Guide to the Galaxy, available where all good books are sold ;) Here is a brief primer on all the references to Jesus and the Bible in Frank Herbert's Dune: Of course, the Kwisatz Haderach, Muad'dib, Paul Atreides as Christ and Messiah; The Fremen desert dwellers as the Jews and Israelites; Baron Harkonnen as King Herod and Pharaoh; Lady Jessica as the Blessed Mother, the Sayadina/Sayyida in not just Catholicism, but Islam, as well (read more on that here); Shai Hulud and the Sandworms as Satan and the dragon/serpent of Genesis; AND did you know the Bible is actually in the Dune universe?? Sorry to everybody for the time commitment this requires. I think I forgot to mention that the 2021 Baron Harkonnen must have been based on Brando's Kurtz. World-building of the highest order! Denis Villanueve makes a third modern sci-fi classic (in our humble opinion). Luke & Corrye agree: this is a "10." The Chumps explore: Why guns aren't prevalent in the Dune universe; Cinematographer Greig Fraser's brilliance; what Baron Harkonnen provides that recent movies have been missing; Timothee Chalamet's potential; "dude bros" Josh Brolin and Jason Momoa. So...what's the deal with part 2? Corrye breaks down the challenges of it getting made...and why we should be optimistic.
We're now in Dune Book 2: Muad Dib! It's a rare 2 chapter episode: in Chapter 1 of Book 2, Paul and Jessica are still out in the stilltent recovering from the attack on their home, the death of Leto and Paul's early onset prescience, including the revelation that Jessica is the Baron Harkonnen's daughter and consequently, Paul is “half Harkonnen, Half Atreides”. The boys discuss nature vs nurture and that the idea here is sure they both have Harkonnen genes, but they are “culturally Atreides”. In the next chapter, Thufir is with his wounded men and encounters a Fremen. In this chapter we learn about “water decisions”, we see the first glimpse of the fremen's elite fighting capabilities and some big differences between the fremen and the Atreides.

With our updated goal of: “spend the right amount of time on each chapter”, we cover chapters 2 and 3. In chapter 2 we move to Geidi Prime, the home planet of the Baron Harkonnen; nemesis of the Atreides. We learn that the Harkonnen plot to take out the Atreides and resume control of the spice trade on Arrakis features turning the Atreides family doctor against them through treachery. However, there is also a secret twist- the Emperor is in on the plot and will be sending his specialized super troops, the Sardaukar, in Harkonnen uniforms to ensure success. Surprisingly the feud between the Harkonnens and Atreides is legally sanctioned with rules and forms of the Emperium- this is called “kanly”, a word rooted in the sort of blood feuds common amongst the tribes of Earth’s Caucasus Mountains, circa the 19th century. Jeff fills us in on how Herbert was heavily influenced by a book called Sabres of Paradise, whose topic is the Caucasian war of Independence between Caucus mountain tribes and Russia. In Chapter 3 we’re back on Caladan where Reverend Mother Helen Mohiam and Jessica discuss her forbidden son, Paul, in more detail, as well as the Bene Gesserit’s ultimate agenda. We get a glimpse of Paul’s special abilities- can he predict the future? Do his dreams have meaning? Delving further into the Bene Gesserit, we discuss “the voice” and the pop science behind it. We’re not an anti-Star Wars podcast, but the “Jedi mind trick” that is the equivalent of the voice is pretty lame. Also, Gandalf uses “the voice” effectively in LOTR several times. Speaking of Star Wars, we hear a very interesting story of how Jeff saw Star Wars in theatres for the first time in 1977. Mike foreshadows Paul’s father Duke Leto’s fate by calling him Ned Stark and that he sucks playing the game of thrones/kanly. The hosts ramble about their Jiu jitsu styles and we realize it’s time to end. Kanly: https://dune.fandom.com/wiki/Kanly#:~:text=Kanly%20was%20the%20enactment%20of,days%20of%20the%20Old%20Imperium. In this episode, we take a look at chapters ten through twelve of Children of Dune, in which Jessica and Ghanima discuss the current state of affairs, we witness Alia's initial corruption as her mental defenses crumble, the late Baron Harkonnen makes an unwelcome and characteristically bloodthirsty appearance, and The Preacher's guide Assan turns out to be part of a cult. See content warning for this episode after the description. No, Ian wasn't high on semuta while recording this episode; he and Temperance just finished watching his pick - the 1984 film Dune - and it sapped the life out of him. Look to Temperance for all the wisecracks and clever insights as she claps back at the 99.9% white cast and muses on the nature of film adaptations generally. Her summaries of the movie honestly make it sound better than it is. Temperance and Ian can both agree, though, that heart plugs are the big takeaway here. Dune (1984) is streaming on Hulu with the HBO add-on, and is also available to rent from Prime Video, Vudu, and YouTube. Content Warning: The scene that introduces the Baron Harkonnen contains grotesque violence. Additionally, several characters appear mutilated. This scene also associates violent depravity with homosexuality, a theme drawn from the novel itself.

No ‘80s movie podcast featuring Kerri Gross would be complete without covering David Lynch’s sci-fi epic “Dune.” But after more than 100 episodes, Shat The Movies couldn’t seem to make it happen. In walked listener Greg R. Last year, he wowed us all by commissioning “Rounders” for a Shat review. This time, Greg thought it would be hilarious to saddle us with a movie he simply doesn’t get. We knew Kerri would love it. We knew Gene would groan. And we knew Big D would stumble over every name in the film. What we’d forgotten in the years since watching “Dune” was the breathtaking outfits, the inventive technology, and the sheer magnitude of the sand worms. And those were overshadowed by the ridiculously bad combat, the utterly incomprehensible plot, and the persistent whispering of obvious internal monologue. Dune takes itself very seriously, which makes it even more hilarious. In the midst of galactic warfare between Houses, Gene cheers for Baron Harkonnen. Big D sees sex slaves everywhere, and Kerri Gross connects the dots between “Dune” and Iraq while finding her inner Muad’Dib. We’re all milking cats in the top floor of the Crazy Town Penthouse. Who is Leto Atreides? The Duke Leto Atreides of Caladan is an honorable man. I don’t mean that in a sarcastic way. I am not Mark Antony giving a speech to the crowd loaded with barbs about honorable men. Duke Leto is an honorable, good man. He respects and honors those who follow him, he places great trust in people, and seeks to make sure that he is worthy of their reciprocal respect. Duke Leto is a benevolent dictator. But he is also not politically stupid. He knows how the game is played. As Thufir points out, he lays out the best hearth in order to attract good followers, and he does pay attention to potential opponents in the political arena; and He deals fairly with everyone — including the Baron Harkonnen. You may recall how Piter De Vries crowed over Leto’s reply to the Baron, and also the Baron’s comment that an Atreides will never miss an opportunity to make a grand gesture. Leto is someone who will conduct himself honorably so that people will see who they should follow based on the content of their character. Leto is the type of person who is decent and also suffers from naïve realism. While he is aware of threats, he also downplays the threat because deep down he believes that most people are decent, and he will succeed because he is good and decent. Good Guys always win, Am I right? I, for one, completely understand this worldview. Inside of me rests a soul that desperately wants people to be good and decent. That being said, there is also another voice inside of me that assures me that I will be disappointed more often than not. Which one is correct? My honest opinion is that there is no right or wrong answer here. Both viewpoints can be proven right–depending on the situation. If you think about this from an evolutionary standpoint, you realize that in order to successfully survive, an organism must be well adapted to multiple environments. This is why omnivores tend to survive. Widespread domination of a food chain by obligate carnivores eventually leads to a single carnivore – and I don’t mean a single type of carnivore; I mean one individual carnivore, which will very rapidly lead to zero carnivores. Similarly, herbivores, if left unmolested, can rapidly consume all available vegetation, which leads to zero herbivores. Life is a balance. Leto tends towards the herbivore side of the equation. He tries to hurt no one, and his military is devoted to defense. Leto’s use of defense actually means that he would not use his forces to attack unprovoked, nor use them to conquer. It is not within the character of Leto to do so. He is uncomfortable about the idea of his son killing. The man employs killers and makes sure that his son knows how to fight and kill, but he is not entirely comfortable with the reality of what that means. I think a lot of us are like that. We tend to use benign phrases, and even positive ones for things that are not positive or benign.
{margin-right: 50; padding-left 60px; text-align: justify;} p {style="text-indent:20px"; font: .9em Myriad Pro;} h1{font: bold; font size: 150%; "Helvetica";} h2{font: bold; font size: 200%; "Helvetica";} h5{font: bold; font size: 200%; "Helvetica";} Written in the Sand Dune, Book One, Chapter Two part 1 And in this Corner, Floating like a Bumblebee At the end of our last episode we completed Chapter One. It was a Five parter with one Mini-sode in the middle. As I said, some chapters are going to take longer than others. One thing I’m planning to do sometime this week is synopsize the the meta points we went over and post them in a list for the chapter for easy reference. I know in the mini-episode I talked about other plans and those are still in the works, I beg your patience on those. It should be obvious by now I don’t do frivolous and simple, and things will come as I feel they’re ready. I think it’ll be worth it. Today, in this installment, we’re going to concentrate primarily on the Baron Harkonnen and his immediate associates, but that will be through a lens on the nature of evil, and a specific breed of evil. I’m breaking this chapter into only two installments. One on the character of the personalities in it, and another about the allegories present in some of the comments. This chapter does not entail one of those long analysis that requires many installments – and that surprised me just as much as I'm sure that it surprises you. What topic could be more complex than evil and the main villain of the first book? Shouldn't that deserve multiple installments? The answer to both those questions is yes. Unfortunately, because we are going chapter by chapter this particular piece happens to be about the Harkonnens and I hate to break it to anyone who is a "fan" of the baron's villainous status but, Baron Harkonnen is boring. Baron Harkonnen is simply just obvious as a villain. Like black hat levels of bad guy. No pun intended, he's the type of villain you can see coming from a mile away. Dune isn't exactly about the obvious enemy. We're definitely going to talk about him, but there is no warning needed for someone like the Baron. Regarding this chapter, what the Harkonnens are is an opposite of the Atreides. The Weaknesses of the Harkonnens are the Strengths in the Atreides, and vice versa. The Harkonnens are repulsive and scary, but they are not as dangerous as one would think. Not quite. They are close, but they are too petty and emotional to be a primary evil. If, in this episode, it seems like I'm getting irritable, it is because I seem to have reached a point where power plays and politics have become repellent to me. Perhaps it's the current political landscape, and by current I mean the past decade or two. I'm not exactly sure what it is, but there is a part of me that has reached an almost unbearable level of, how should I put this, impatience with people from all different groups and in all levels of power who would gladly watch the world burn for a tiny morsel of personal advancement. What I am going to do with this chapter is take this opportunity to discuss certain personality types which are relevant here. These tend to fall under the psychological diagnosis of antisocial personality disorders. Bear in mind that I am not a mental health professional, so my descriptions will not necessarily be entirely kosher. What I'm trying to do is define terminology at this point. In layman's terms we are more familiar with sociopath, psychopath, and narcissist. Depending on who you ask, narcissism and socio-pathology are interchangeable; I want to keep them separate for my own perceptions of subtle differences. With some variations on behavior, as well as differences in causes, these three conditions all tend to display some similar signs. All will have abnormally low levels of apparent empathy. All of them are manipulative and self-centered. For all intents and purposes,
This week... you know what? I am still recovering from watching this movie a week ago. Stalker from 1979, a movie about some guys who go to a place and lie down in some uncomfortable areas. Did this movie predict the coming Chernobyl Accident? Is the pursuit of God only for those strong enough to endure the mystery of existence? Do I know what I am talking about? All of these question, and more, are not answered in this episode! email: pleasedontpodcast@gmail.com facebook: facebook.com/pdsmiostwitter: twitter.com/outerspacepodShow Notes ep 34 Stalker-Chili DOg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Zm3cWIJsm4 -Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster http://hitchhikers.wikia.com/wiki/Pan_Galactic_Gargle_Blaster -Neverending story Horse https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vE8mFDabqD0 -2001 Beyond the Stargate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ou6JNQwPWE0 -Brady Bunch Stage Fright https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jElVDJ2iV8c -DMZ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demilitarized_zone -Rothko http://www.markrothko.org/ -Swim/fan http://letterboxd.com/film/swimfan/ -Baron Harkonnen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWq15lDh8yM -I know you know what movie this is, I'm just be thorough http://letterboxd.com/film/citizen-kane/ -Brazil http://letterboxd.com/film/brazil/ -2046 http://letterboxd.com/film/2046/ -In the Mood for Love http://letterboxd.com/search/in+the+mood+for+love/ -Chernobyl disaster https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernobyl_disaster -Shock the Monkey https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnVf1ZoCJSo -Hodor https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_A_Song_of_Ice_and_Fire_characters#Hodor -Telephone Line https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77R1Wp6Y_5Y -Mojave Phone Booth https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mojave_phone_booth -Emergency Preparedness http://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Emergency_Preparedness -Predator vs Kevin from Home Alone http://knowyourmeme.com/photos/960604-4chan -Uncle Kevin http://gameofthrones.wikia.com/wiki/Kevan_Lannister -Terrence Malick https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrence_Malick -Lemonade https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemonade_(Beyonc%C3%A9_album) -Stalker Music https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pP1QXKbhqr4 -Example of Picard Flutin' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3FgJztHqFE -Anchorman Flutin' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_c_ufaxeSTs -Movie Joel couldn't remember http://letterboxd.com/film/kanal-1957/ -Does the Dog Die https://www.doesthedogdie.com/ -Letterboxd Sci-fi http://letterboxd.com/films/genre/science-fiction/by/rating/size/small/ -Rotten Tomatoes http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1043378-stalker/ -Bedtime Story https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSaFgAwnRSc
Pencilheads Episode VIIIHey all,In our latest episode, Mike and I drive a souped-up delorean back into the 1990's to explore our humble beginnings- how we met, the industries we've worked in, and our most favoritest projects! Definitely worth a listen if you ever wondered what we do on the day to day when we're not here podcasting.HEAVY RAIN | game discussionWe also discuss the phenomenal PS3 exclusive Heavy Rain. We talk about all things Origami Killer, drug addicted FBI agents, insomniac photo journalists, and incompetent fathers/husbands... Ehem... That's you, Ethan Mars. Mike and I also manage to dive into the graphics, music, and gameplay!ALIEN | design discussionMike and I take a hard look at everyone's favorite xenomorph and all of it's intriguing, unsettling, and, frankly, brilliant design elements. We also manage to delve into some face-hugger and space jockey discussion, with a dash of Giger thrown in.DUNE | design discussionWe go into detail regarding our love for all the wonderful designs this film has given us. The Baron Harkonnen, Fremen stillsuits, the ship designs, prop design... Even that creepy, mutated navigator dude and his translators.
