Yes, the world may be on fire and/or a frigid wasteland at the same time, but we're still here and still kicking. And to prove that there is still some good in the world (along with football YouTuber Tom Grossi raising over a million dollars for charity in one week) there's a very long-awaited announcement: NO. 6 IS GETTING A NEW NOVEL. Let's hope that the reunion will, indeed, be coming for those boys. And along with that, we have the news of BOCCHI THE SECOND SEASON happening, Masaaki Yuasa starting up a new studio, an hour's worth of book announcements from several publishers (even from Tokyopop, but just briefly), Fate/stay night airing on a... *curious* cable TV channel, some ripples in the Gundam pipeline, the recent AnimEigo "town hall" announcements, and a whole lot of dumb shenanigans to help distract all of you from the real world at large. And if all else fails, just wait for the Canada gooses to begin their attack. Max Pearson presents a collection of the week's Witness History episodes. We hear from 'wolf child' Luise Quietsch who was separated from her family and forced to flee East Prussia. Whilst trying to survive during World War Two, these children were likened to hungry wolves roaming through forests. Journalist and documentary filmmaker Sonya Winterberg who recorded the testimony of “wolf children” for her book, discusses the profound impact it had on their lives. We also hear about the first major series of English lessons which were broadcast on Chinese television in 1981. A former student recalls the series of unprecedented teachers' strikes which temporarily shut down most of New York schools in the late 1960s.Plus the deadly attack at Milltown Cemetery which took place during the funeral of three IRA members. Finally we head to Eastern Europe in 1989, where approximately two million people joined hands across across Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania to form a human chain demanding independence from the Soviet Union. Welcome to 'Read with Me Light Novel,' I'm your co-host Lisa. Today, we're embarking on an exciting journey into the realm of anime, specifically tailored for first-time watchers and those eager to delve deeper into the genre. If you enjoy the genres they belong to, I'd recommend these. Attack on Titan romance, Kaguya-Sama: Love is War comedy/romance, Vinland Saga for historical themes Link Click for thriller, Oshi No Ko/My Star for drama and mystery, Assassination Classroom for spy thriller, Mob Psycho 100 for action, Tokyo Ghoul, Classroom of The Elite, Jujutsu Kaisen, Code Geass, 86, Your Name, Quanzhi Fashi, Tokyo Revengers, or Violet Evergarden."If you're into shonen or seinen, consider Jujutsu Kaisen and Bungou Stray Dogs Nanbaka and Servamp are great too, but beware that they lack proper endings, so you'll need to read the manga for Servamp to know what happens. Demon Slayer, Black Clover, Blood Blockade Battlefront, Charlotte, Dororo, Dr. Stone, Noragami, and My Hero Academia are also worth checking out. For a hero vs. villain dynamic, Mob Psycho 100 and One Punch Man are top picks. Tower of God, God of High School, and Tokyo Revengers are also solid choices. If you're in the mood for something sad, try I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, Anohana, Violet Evergarden, Banana Fish (though it's a challenging watch, especially if you're not comfortable with a same-sex relationship), Hal, Hotarubi no Mori e, Orange, and Ride Your Wave. Wolf Children is another excellent pick for a heartfelt experience. For romance enthusiasts, Kiss Him, Not Me, Lovely Complex, Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, Kamisama Hajimemashita, Say I Love You, and Nodame Cantabile offer delightful stories with a blend of humor and romance. And if you're craving horror, thrillers, or investigations, don't miss Death Note, Link Click, Perfect Blue, Moriarty the Patriot, Odd Taxi, Love of Kill, Mieruko-chan, Monster, Ikebukuro West Gate Park, Durarara, Junji Ito Collection, Psychic Detective, Psycho-Pass, Balance: Unlimited, and The Promised Neverland."
What makes for a particularly compelling anime movie? Ionatan and Ravi discuss how they approach critically watching films compared to television series before giving their personal recommendations for the best standalone movies that the medium has to offer. They cover a pair of Satoshi Kon works in 'Tokyo Godfathers' and 'Perfect Blue,' Mamoru Hosoda's heartfelt story of parenthood in 'Wolf Children,' and Masaaki Yuasa's take on a Tomihiko Morimi novel in 'The Night is Short, Walk on Girl' among various other picks.

Melanie joins Melvin to discuss Belle, Mamoru Hosoda's latest anime feature that combines real-life heart with the wonder of cyber-space! How well does he balance these ideas, and are we familiar with Hosoda's filmography? Tune in to hear that and more! Topics: (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 38-minutes discussing our history with Anime, what we like and dislike about the style, and where we currently stand as purveyors of the medium (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)Mamoru Hosoda clearly has a fascination with the duality between the real-world and digital-world as observed through his filmography (several Digimon movies, Summer Wars, Belle).Melanie connected with the way in which Suzu found her voice throughout the story's progression. Both Melvin and Melanie enjoyed most of the music, specifically the first song.Melvin saw one of Mamoru Hosoda's previous narrative successes, Wolf Children, and seriously disliked the movie. He routinely gets hate-mail for his scathing review left on MyAnimeList. Some problems he remembers from Wolf Children he also observed in Belle.Belle has many duality motifs including the imagery of a whale, a sea-creature dependent on air, or the difference between online and offline personalities.Belle is comprised of three narrative beats; digital world and concerts, slice-of-life, and the beauty and the beast. How you connect with each of these aspects will greatly impact your enjoyment of the film.Getting into the controversial twist that more-or-less co-opts the movie during its third act. Both Melanie and Melvin take issue with the severe lack of resolution presented by the introduction of Belle's twist, apart from the fact it's also comparatively uncomfortable. There's this expectation online that people have a right to information or knowledge regardless of boundaries or privacy. Melvin appreciated Belle's passive critique against this idea.Melvin and Melanie go full script-doctor because we're a podcast and that's what podcasts do.Recommendations:Spriggan (1998) (Movie)Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade (1999) (Movie)Support the showSupport on Patreon for Unique Perks! There is one thing that people tend to overlook when reviewing Studio Chizu's BELLE. Despite being directed by legendary filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda (Wolf Children, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) and providing an optimistic take on technology and the internet, the film falls short when it attempts to portray how people should safely help victims of abuse. The story of the German wolf children, who fought for their survival in the forests of Lithuania, is a little-known chapter in post-war German history. Historian and author Christian Hardinghaus has dedicated himself to the topic in his new book„Das Wolfsmädchen – Flucht aus der Königsberger Hungerhölle 1946“. - Die Geschichte der deutschen Wolfskinder, die in den Wäldern Litauens ums Überleben kämpften, ist ein kaum bekanntes Kapitel der deutschen Nachkriegsgeschichte. Another Mamoru Hosoda film this week... It's Wolf Children. Not sure it counts as a classic but it's definitely on brand for him. At it's core, this is the story of a single mom and her two children trying to find their way in a world they don't belong to. BUT... at it's other core, it's about a woman who sleeps with a wolf and has to deal with the repercussions of that decision. Tune in to hear us try to make sense of the intricacies of human/wolf relations. SPOILER ALERT!!! This week's choice was an interesting one. The story was largely really good. It left them with some questions but overall it was not bad and decent. The music was great and was not out of place when it was playing and the artwork was pretty solid in general for it. It does a good job of only really giving you the information that you need and leading the story in a decent direction. It is worth the watch. This week was certainly an interesting one. And it was not one that we really enjoyed. The story was lacking substance. The animation style also gave it an older feel than what it actually has which for us at the time of recording was only 10 years old. Which does not boast well for the show's long run. The plot, or lack thereof, really does it no justice as well and we honestly just are left with more questions and bewilderment than anything else. Our only hope is that there is a season 2 but that is not likely. We review Wolf Children (Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki). This anime film follows the story of Hana, a mother who must navigate the struggles of raising and protecting her two half-wolf children. We talk about the soundtrack, Ame and Yuki's journey to decide their paths in life, Hana's perseverance, and much more. We also debate whether there are "furry" moments in this movie. Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, a podcast where we reach out to folks to talk about what they've been watching. It's as simple as that. Joining Nicolas Rapold this time is R. Emmet Sweeney, producer of DVDs and Blu-rays for Kino Lorber. Rob has had two projects lately: looking for good movies to watch with his daughter, and watching fantastical Indian genre movies. Titles discussed include: Wee Willie Winkie and Heidi, both starring Shirley Temple; Mamoru Hosoda's Wolf Children; The Wizard of Oz; S.S. Rajamouli's Eega (“The Fly”); Bill & Ted Face the Music; High Risk, starring Jet Li; and the latest Charlie Kaufman creation, I'm Thinking of Ending Things. The Casual Anime Podcast once again tries their hand at a Mamoru Hosoda film. Although this film seems far more relatable (to us) than his other work, this film is adamantly targeting the primordial parental instinct, thereby making it less about "coming of age", and rather more about "coming to terms" with your children growing up.
You don't have to be a furry to get a warm fuzzy or burst into tears from Mamoru Hosoda's Wolf Children. This two-hour movie follows the life of a young woman named Hana as she moves from adolescent to mother to working widow. As emotional as Jared and Ink were while watching, both sit down to pick apart just how the movie accomplished its emotional manipulation as well as discuss some of the more outstanding strengths and weaknesses of plot, characters, and art.
