Send us a textIn 1976 a group of friends meet in the desert to record a podcast. There they stumble upon an abandoned town called Outcast, or maybe it was Conquest, we're not sure. But they are not alone. A family of masked psychopaths have claimed the town as their own and are hell bent on destroying the recording so no one can ever listen. On Episode 684 of Trick or Treat Radio we discuss the 70s-styled horror film Brute 1976 from director Marcel Walz! We also talk about why backwoods slashers just don't work the way they used to, the double standard of streaming services censoring art, and why this month will be a Shemptember to Remember! The Office of Homeless Services may now be facing a formal audit due to millions of dollars in financial irregularities within the department. Independent journalist Mike Lacy — who recently broke the news of a fire at Strobel House, Nashville's permanent supportive housing facility, and the resignation of the director of Depaul USA, its management company — joins host Marie Cecile Anderson and executive producer Whitney Pastorek to explain how we got here. What is the core concept of the "Lion Mentality"?The Lion Mentality is a mindset characterized by courage, certainty, efficiency, protectiveness, and an unwavering commitment to one's goals and "tribe" (team, clients, family). It encourages individuals to act like a lion – independent, decisive, and focused – rather than a sheep, which passively follows the crowd. It's about taking ownership of your actions, decisions, and outcomes, driven by a deep understanding of your "why."A key aspect of the Lion Mentality is overcoming the fear of what others think. The speaker emphasizes that the only opinions that should matter are your own and those of the people you are helping. This means pushing past discomfort, like posting a video even if it feels vulnerable, or confidently approaching a "for sale by owner" listing without being swayed by potential judgment. Lions are not concerned with external validation; they act on their own conviction. You can assess this by examining your actions and motivations. If you are doing what everyone else is doing without critical thought or questioning, you are likely a "sheep." A "lion" actively pursues their goals, follows their own schedule, and takes charge of their business. The "slaughterhouse" analogy is used to describe passive activities like idle chit-chat at the office, shuffling papers, or aimless internet browsing instead of focused prospecting and skill development. If you consistently miss your goals, you're likely being led to the "slaughterhouse.""Hyenas" represent distractions that pull you away from your focus and goals. These can be people, things, habits, or even seemingly innocent activities that take your attention away from your schedule and priorities. To deal with hyenas, you must be fearless and assertive, protecting your time and focus. This could mean politely declining interruptions during prospecting time or making a conscious decision to eliminate activities that don't serve your purpose."Going all in" means fully committing to whatever you're doing, whether it's mastering a new system like a CRM, developing skills, or pursuing your goals. It's about taking ownership and not just getting "the gist" of something. Competence is the reward for this commitment. Just as a lion only sleeps 20 hours a day but is highly effective when it hunts, you should be highly efficient and effective in the time you dedicate to your work. Even a short, focused period of "all-in" effort can yield better results than many hours of unfocused activity.Protectiveness is a core trait of the lion. This applies to several areas:Skills: Continuously practicing and improving your skills to remain effective.Schedule: Guarding your dedicated work time fiercely, just as a lion protects its rest or meal.Mindset: Consciously filtering out negative influences and maintaining a positive, focused outlook.Circle: Identifying and removing people, places, or activities that are detrimental to your growth.Team/Tribe: As a leader, you must protect and support your team, being the rainmaker they rely on and inspiring confidence.Building pride and respect means establishing yourself as a professional who is reliable, protective, and competent. It's about cultivating an image where clients and colleagues recognize you as the go-to person in your field. This isn't achieved by being the smartest or doing more than everyone else, but by consistently demonstrating the core traits of the Lion Mentality: courage, certainty, all-in commitment, knowledge, efficiency, and protectiveness of your clients. This ensures people will follow you because they trust your leadership and commitment.

Here at D&SD Over the Summer on Wednesdays we will be releasing some of our cool side campaign episodes! This series is called “The Playa Rose” is a western campaign DM'd by our Very own Andrew Kornblatt. Hyenas, Mariachis, and Pyrrhic Victory The defense of Trail's homestead unfolds in multiple harrowing phases. As afternoon heat reaches itszenith, the terrifying whooping of hyenas breaks the silence - impossible creatures this far east, led by agiant specimen that sniffs the air with an almost humanoid smile before turning toward the defenders. A fast-paced musical duel accompanies the battle as serpentine guitar melodies coil around each otherwhile a trumpet rises to take the lead. The party fights desperately against the pack, with the creatures'unnatural presence confirming the supernatural nature of their enemies. As the last hyena dies in a pool of dark blood, the music shifts to haunting words in an unknown tongue.Four mysterious musicians fade into existence: Vargus (the black-suited leader with grey skin and bone-white guitar), Song of the Lonesome Howl (a spotted Tabaxi with brass instrument and pistol), Gerar (ayellow dragonborn guitarist with gila monster features), and Solis (a red-skinned tiefling with horn-shaped shoulder pads). The battle is fierce and costly. Though our heroes' preparation and determination prove superior to thesupernatural mariachi band, their victory comes at a terrible price. The homestead burns above them asthey flee through Mac D's tunnel system, while Vargus screams "Consuela!" into the night, revealing apersonal connection to their enigmatic halfling companion. For decades, conservationists in Tajikistan assumed that the striped hyena – a shy, less vocal cousin of the spotted hyena – was extinct there. But in 2017 a motion-sensitive camera trap in the country's south-western corner, near the borders with Afghanistan and Uzbekistan, detected the presence of a female with cubs. The discovery stunned local observers, and ever since, one man and his colleagues have struggled to find out more about the few remaining Tajik striped hyenas with a view to saving them from oblivion. The challenges are immense, including the international animal parts trade, competition between animals and humans for habitat, and often-negative public perceptions of the hyena itself. Eight years on, Antonia Bolingbroke-Kent travels to the grassy lowlands of Tajikistan to join the small team in their fight to save these elusive, persecuted mammals, and in doing so learns how vital hyenas are to both the ecosystem and human health. This episode of The Documentary comes to you from Assignment, investigations and journeys into the heart of global events.

In 1985, Jeanette Winterson published her debut novel – the groundbreaking and subversive Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit. Genre-bending and narratively bold, it garnered then-rare mainstream success for a story that was fiercely feminist and challenged traditional gender roles. Four decades on, Winterson remains one of our most distinguished writers, renowned for her singular voice and restless curiosity. Her work spans a vast landscape of ideas, from artificial intelligence to religion, from myth to memory. In this episode, hear from one of literature’s most provocative and original minds, as Winterson joins the Wheeler Centre for an exclusive Melbourne appearance at The Capitol, reflecting on her remarkable career and the themes that continue to shape her writing. This event was recorded on Saturday 24th May 2025 at The Capitol. It was presented in partnership with RMIT University. The official bookseller was Hares and Hyenas. Quick fire: what carnivore found in both Africa AND Asia is a highly intelligent, highly successful apex predator with a complex social structure? If you said Lions, then you are DEAD wrong, idiot. Today we're talking about one of the most badass animals that you probably don't know too much about (or what you DO know is incorrect...thanks, Disney) . Standing with Alice to present the best Hyena defence for the jury is wildlife educator, author and all around hilarious human being, Mamadou Ndiaye, who is making it his personal mission to re-write what people know about this incredible and metal-as-hell animal. If you want to get to the bottom of whether Hyenas are TRULY assholes or not, give this episode a listen and we promise you'll come away with some epic Hyena facts and a greater appreciation for their kind. [no money back guarantees]. Our charity of the week this week is the Ngorongoro Hyena Project, based out in Tanzania, whose team are researching the Spotted Hyena clans in the crater there. In this episode of Friday Field Notes, Ryan Michler explores a powerful metaphor for masculinity. Drawing from nature, he contrasts the virtuous, leadership-driven traits of lions with the deceptive, self-serving behaviors of hyenas. Through five key distinctions—leading vs. following, earning vs. taking, brotherhood vs. matriarchy, fearlessness vs. deceit, and protection vs. predation—Ryan challenges men to embody the lion's strength and integrity. With personal anecdotes and bold insights, he urges listeners to reject parasitic tendencies and pursue a legacy of righteous living. Join Ryan as he unpacks this analogy and offers a path to purposeful manhood. In this Huberman Lab Essentials episode, I explain the crucial role hormones play in shaping the sexual development of both the brain and body. I discuss how biological masculinization and feminization depend on factors such as genetics, hormone ratios, and receptor availability. I also explore how hormones like testosterone, estrogen, and other steroid hormones influence sexual characteristics and brain development. Additionally, I examine the impact of environmental factors—such as herbicides like atrazine, cannabis, alcohol, and even cell phones—on hormone function and reproductive health. Huberman Lab Essentials are short episodes (approximately 30 minutes) focused on key science and protocol takeaways from past Huberman Lab episodes. In this episode Professor Ramble and the Velvet Fist discuss motherhood and their relationshiops withthier mothers with special guests Gherkin and Karen."There was an NPR show about Keiko, (the animal actor who played the whale in Free Willy - who was rescued from a sea park in Mexico City and later released into the wild), from that show I learned that male Orcas are mamma's boys who spend the majority of their lives in close proximity to their mothers. Fascinating!Orangutans are the opposite with daughters being the ones who stay with their mommas in the high green jungle sea...With standard chimps, (I'm not sure for Bonobos) your status in the tribe, whether it's even possible for you to become the leader for example, entirely depends on who your mother is. Not your strength, smarts, or banana acquisition skills. (But I guess Fatherhood technically can't even exist in chimps)Hyenas, now considered to be almost as smart as chimps, are entirely matriarchal and only high status daughters can be queens.I just think it's fascinating how the job of Motherhood is expressed and has such an effect on the way the world operates."
[VIDEO available on Spotify.] Imagine a vagina. You might be thinking of a passive tube, patiently waiting for a penis to shoot out sperm — and you wouldn't be alone. From Aristotle to Darwin, tons of prominent nerds classified males as the active sexual players: They're coercing, manipulating and harassing to reproduce, while the females are passive, coy, chaste. But animal ecologist Dr. Tiana Pirtle is here to give us the real story. Because once scientists started investigating what really goes on in the vaginas of the animal queendom, they realized that — far from being docile tubes — vaginas are packed with their own weaponry, tools and secret chambers. It turns out that both penises and vaginas were allowed to fight in the evolutionary arms race. Pirtle breaks open a box filled with animal vaginas to tell us all about it. Thanks to Lydia and "warblrwatchr" for this week's suggestions! Further reading: Sweet tooth: Ethiopian wolves seen feeding on nectar The African wild dog is not actually a dog and eats lots of things: The aardwolf is not a dog at all and eats insects: The Ethiopian wolf is not a dog (or a wolf or a fox) and eats rodents and nectar [photo by Adrien Lesaffre and taken from this page]: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This week we're going to talk about three dog-like animals from Africa, suggested by Lydia and “warblrwatchr,” even though none of the three animals are dogs. We'll start with one of Lydia's suggestions, the African wild dog, also called the painted dog or painted wolf. Despite those names, it's not very closely related to dogs and wolves. It's the only species in its own genus, although it is a member of the family Canidae. Colonizers from Europe thought the animal was just a feral dog, not anything special that should be protected, and they also brought domestic dogs with them to Africa. Domestic dogs mean diseases that other canids can catch. Between introduced diseases, farmers killing the animals to keep them away from livestock, and habitat loss, the African wild dog is endangered. Luckily, these days conservation groups have been working to protect the animal, and its numbers are increasing slowly in Kenya's national parks in particular. The African wild dog is a tall, strong canid with great big ears and no dewclaws. It has a yellowish coat with black blotches and some white spots, including a white tail tip, although some subspecies have darker coats. Unlike most canids, its fur is bristly and doesn't have a soft undercoat, and as the dog ages, it loses its fur until old dogs are nearly bald. It's very social, as canids almost always are, and its varied coat pattern helps individuals recognize friends and pack-mates at a distance. The African wild dog prefers savannas and other open areas. It hunts in packs and mostly preys on antelopes, although it will also kill zebras and other large animals, and individual dogs will sometimes catch small animals like hares and rodents. The African wild dog pack isn't especially hierarchical. The males of the pack are mainly led by the dominant male, while the females are mainly led by the oldest female, who is usually the most dominant. The dominant pair is usually the only pair that has babies. A mother dog has up to 16 pups at a time but only one litter a year. In a lot of animals, as the babies grow up, the males are usually the ones who are driven out of the pack or leave on their own to find a new pack. In the African wild dog, females are the ones who leave as they grow up. Sometimes the females join a different pack and sometimes they start their own. Either way, it stops a pack from becoming inbred. The African wild dog is extremely vocal, making lots of different sounds to communicate with its pack-mates. It sounds a lot more like a bird than a dog. This is what African wild dogs sound like: [doggo sounds] Next, Lydia and warblrwatchr wanted to learn about the aardwolf, which lives in eastern and southern Africa. Unlike the African wild dog, which is mostly active during the day, the aardwolf is nocturnal. It spends most of the day in a burrow, sometimes one it digs itself, but more often one that another animal dug and abandoned at some point. The aardwolf has black stripes on a yellowish or reddish coat, a mane of long hair down its neck and back, large ears, and a bushy tail. It's about the size of a big dog, about 20 inches tall at the shoulders, or 50 cm, but it looks like a small, slender hyena. That's because it is actually a type of hyena, although it's not closely related to other hyenas. Hyenas look dog-like but they aren't canids at all. In fact, they're more closely related to cats than to dogs,
In this episode, my guest is Dr. Shanna Swan, Ph.D., professor of environmental medicine and reproductive health at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Swan is the world's leading expert on the harmful impact of chemicals in our food, water, cosmetics, and various household and consumer products on our hormones, and the consequences for fertility and overall reproductive health. She explains how exposure to phthalates and other endocrine disruptors adversely impacts fetal development, puberty, and the adult brain and body. We discuss the global decline in human fertility due to disruptive environmental toxins, such as pesticides, and certain foods and beverages we consume. We discuss practical strategies to minimize exposure to harmful chemicals, such as phthalates, bisphenol A (BPA), BPS, and PFAS. This includes reducing disposable plastic use, making healthier food preparation, consumption, and storage choices, and selecting personal and household products that don't contain harmful toxins. This episode allows you to assess your risk of exposure to endocrine disruptors accurately and empowers you to take control of your hormone health and fertility. Or USA Helloenas, Electric Wolf, Hansham Hantom, Spectre Excursion.
We know from ancient skeletal remains that around one million years ago, hyenas of the Chasmaporthetes genus prowled the US and Mexico. But they also stalked the tundra—a fact we've learned from just two fossilized molars.
These polka-dotted predators are no laughing matter. Learn all about hyenas with A Moment of Science.
Welcome to episode 26 of Zoology Ramblings! This week, we are back to our regular podcast structure and begin by sharing some quick nature news followed by our animals of the week. Robi talks about brown hyena phylogeny, and how new research may see it re-classified into an extinct genus. Taxonomy nerds, this one's for you! I talk about the invasive American signal crayfish and how it's come to spread an dominate across UK waterways. We then share our local news, which mean both of us sharing UK-based stories while Robi and I are in the same country. I talk about the hopeful community-based stories of people drawing inspiration from taking action for nature locally. Robi un-packs a fear-mongering article about great white sharks spotted in Ireland, and how this continues to give these amazing predators a bad reputation. We then move onto our global conservation stories, where Robi talks about the proposal to kill 1.5 million barred owls in the USA, and I celebrate the amazing female rangers of North Luangwa. Please let us know which species you'd like us to talk about in our upcoming Rewilding deep dive. As ever, thanks to Allie for the lovely piano interlude and thanks to you amazing listeners for sticking with us on our long rambles. We hope you enjoy our latest ramble, Emma and Robi To see what we're up to elsewhere check us out on: @emma_hodson_wildlife @robi_watkinson_wildlife
