On today's episode Ali and Asif debate their favourite movies from 1993 (1:01). After a brief mention of Scarface from 1983, the guys discuss movies from 1993 did NOT make their top 10. Finally, the guys each give their top 10 lists from the year. Then the guys discuss anosmia aka the loss of smell (31:45). Ali introduces the topic by discussing chef and tv celebrity Joshna maharaj who came out about her diagnosis of anosmia several years ago. Asif talks about how smell works from a brain perspective and how it is related to taste. Ali then asks Asif about different types of smell loss and what causes them. They then discuss the relation between loss of smell and covid-19. Asif then goes over the natural history of these disorders and what investigations sometimes need to be done. Finally he discusses the prognosis and proposed treatment for anosmia and other disorders of smell.  The opinions expressed are those of the hosts, and do not reflect those of any other organizations. Chrissi Kelly is the founder of AbScent, a UK-based charity that is dedicated to providing support and trusted information to those affected by anosmia and other smell disorders. We found her perspective enlightening and, while we aren't personally experiencing parosmia, we imagine this conversation might provide some clarity and encouragement to those afflicted by this uncomfortable phenomenon. The main takeaway? Consider parosmia an injury, not an illness, and be patient with yourself as your body mends and heals. AbScent website: https://abscent.org/

Compared to Brooke's episode on Tuesday, this episode is a great example of "same virus, different stories." In the second episode of our Parosmia Series, we talk to Marilyn who had some of the weirdest and worst symptoms of Covid... yet never received a positive test. Not one. Without a positive test can she still claim to have had Covid? How else can she explain the acrid metal taste she felt in her mouth every time she consumed onions? Or the heaviness in her chest when she tried to breathe? We talk about how unsettling it is to be betrayed by your body and Raymond shares why it's important to get a second opinion if you don't feel heard by your doctor. We're kicking off Season 2 with a series about parosmia, perhaps the most odd and startling long-hauler symptom to date. Parosmia is dysfunctional smell detection characterized by the inability of the brain to correctly identify an odor's "natural" smell. Instead, the natural odor is usually transformed into an unpleasant aroma, typically a "'burned,' 'rotting,' 'fecal,' or 'chemical' smell".  Pre-pandemic this was a symptom often found in patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment or persons recovering from head trauma. Its current link to coronavirus confounds doctors and scientists as there is no immediate cure. Brooke is our first guest and she has been struggling with her symptoms for 10 months. It is quite an emotional interview as she breaks down what her day to day life is like living with parosmia. She recounts how she may have gotten it, what she can and cannot consume, and shares resources that have helped her along the way (which are posted below). Find out more at cca-derry-londonderry.org For CCA during lockdown, Jan has created OlfactoStroll, a smell walk for our city, however, you can listen to the audio anywhere in the world or around your own home to create your own OlfactoStroll. Both walking and smell have taken on added importance during the pandemic. This guided walk offers a different way to experience familiar surroundings guided by a series of prompts from the artist. The podcast/guided walk, is accompanied by a series of Deep Smelling protocols, visible through our gallery windows and at various spots around the city. Jan is an artist and freelance curator/producer based in Belfast. She is currently a PhD researcher at Ulster University. OlfactoStroll is grounded in Jan's PhD research, in which she is developing a method of Deep Smelling. Deep Smelling is a meditative, experiential and process-based art practice, which brings our attention to our sense of smell. As an artist and researcher Jan works with smell as a device to re-programme how we perceive our surroundings, whilst themes of friendship fuel her curatorial practice. Jan's art practice oscillates between participatory events and obsessive research, using smell, walking, archives, mapping, food, sound, film, bookmaking, botany, and interventions as tools. Jan's hope, as we negotiate the pandemic and try to figure out what a ‘new normal' could be, is that we take the opportunity to maintain a slower pace. That we will reflect on our experiences with a quiet activism, that utilises taking time to do nothing but wander around, and in this case, notice what we can smell and sense around us. * If you are experiencing a loss or distortion of your sense of smell this could be a symptom of Covid-19; please follow guidance to self-isolate and book a test www.nidirect.gov.uk AbScent is a UK charity that offers support and advice to people with smell disorders.
