As a third generation Angelino, Hannah Einbinder reps her city hard. “I pledge allegiance to the United States of Los Angeles,” she declared proudly to Chloe on the latest episode of The Run-Through podcast, “I love LA from the tip to the tail.” Right now, Einbinder is making the rounds on one of her biggest press tours to date ahead of the premiere of Jane Schoenbrun's third tongue twister of a film, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. Einbinder stars as Kris, a young queer director, who is working on a revival of a slasher horror franchise. Prior to working on the project, slashers were a bit of a blindspot for Einbinder, though she was well-versed in the great horror genre and cited Silent Hill as the scariest movie she's seen.  “I see a huge link between comedy and horror,” Einbinder observed, noting that this film is as funny as it is scary, “I think that it kind of creates the same thing in the body, like this buildup of tension with this big release. I think that's why you see so many, like, comedians go in that direction. Like, you look at Jordan Peele and that, to me, makes so much sense.”  Along those lines, Einbinder pointed out that Schoenbrun actually has a comedy background and did sketch comedy at UCB many moons ago. The two of them became quite close working on the film, which like Schoenbrun's prior film, I Saw The TV Glow, is a work of autofiction and an allegory for queerness and transition. This film required them to explore topics of dissociation relative to sex. “I feel like many of us have not taken the time to examine how universal it is.”  Einbinder hasn't yet settled on her look for the premiere, but she is already considering how she is going to accessorize. She intends to visit a New York City based nail artist who uses the moniker claws by joy to get a bloody, slasher style manicure.  As a major Hacks fan, Chloe also brought up her favorite duo: Ava Daniels and Deborah Vance. While the show has reached its conclusion, she and Jean Smart are in regular contact and sharing memes. “She's absolutely out of control,” Einbinder said of Smart's meme sharing tendencies.   Einbinder won her first Emmy for the series back in the fall and when asked where she displays it, she sheepishly revealed that she keeps it tucked away. She explained that her grandfather was a decorated war hero and when he passed, the family found all of his medals in a manila envelope in a drawer. “And so I kinda figure if, like, if that guy's not putting his stuff out,” she said trailing off, “I thought he was so swag for doing that.” The Run-Through with Vogue is your go-to podcast where fashion meets culture. As lightning strikes and kills a bull in the herd, the animals scatter in panic, threatening to crush the hunters and their heavily loaded supply wagons. The men are forced to make a desperate run through the blinding rain and mud, barely escaping the thundering herd when the storm runoff carves out a massive rut in the earth, redirecting the buffalo away from their path and slowing the animals down in a nearby river.The following day, after the storm passes, the hunters venture out onto the prairie to survey the aftermath, following the winding, crooked trails left by the buffalo. Along the way, they witness the grim reality of the hide-hunting trade, coming across hundreds of decaying carcasses and spoiled hides left behind to rot by other hunters. After continuing their hunt for two more weeks to fulfill their quota of 557 hides, they haul their haul back to Fort Hays to collect their pay. A business with real revenue and real profits can still be too capital-intensive for venture and too small for private equity control. Venture wants a power law. These companies just grow steadily. So nobody funds them. In May, S2G closed a billion-dollar fund built for exactly this gap.Fit-for-purpose capital means matching the money to the reality. US biotech built a system that can take an unproven, clinical-stage company public and attract hundreds of millions. Climate has never built its equivalent. That, Sanjeev argues, is the real gap.Every great transition needed a financial invention first. The joint stock company made oceanic trade possible. Bond syndicates built the railroads. The venture partnership funded the microchip. In each case someone built the financial container before the future arrived.Impact does not have to be concessionary. At the IFC, his team helped cut the cost of a Hepatitis B vaccine by roughly 80–90% — from $2.50 a vial — while margins stayed above 60–70%. Cheaper, faster, better, and profitable at the same time.Invest at the seams. The best opportunities sit between asset classes and between sectors, where a typical energy investor would dismiss it and a food investor would call it something else — so nobody underwrites it.Climate is a 10,000-year economic megatrend, not a moral crusade. Humans take useful energy and turn it into useful materials — fire, agriculture, fossil fuels. And the next chapter will still be extractive: it needs copper, cobalt, nickel, lithium.Busts are where the returns are made. You learn more in the bust cycles than the boom cycles. Markets overshoot both ways, and the companies that survive get forced into product-market fit and a real P&L.The oceans are the least measured part of the planet. We know more about space. The Mediterranean Sea accounts for less than 1% of the world's ocean surface water, but it contains roughly 18% of global marine biodiversity. It is home to 150 million people along its coastline (roughly equivalent to Russia's population). And it sequesters 17.2 million metric tons of CO2 each year. Joining the Newscast this week to talk about the unique biodiversity of the Mediterranean Sea and its threats is journalist Manuela Callari. Callari has written for Mongabay, highlighting the threats to purple sea urchins (Paracentrotus lividus) along the Italian coast. These marine invertebrates are crucial to the health of marine ecosystems, such as those in the Mediterranean, by helping regulate algal abundance and serving as food for predators. However, they are being overfished and even poached in marine protected areas due to demand for them as the primary ingredient in a popular tourist dish: spaghetti ai ricci di mare. While the situation with urchins persists, Italy has been investing in an unprecedented effort to map its entire underwater coastline using deployed sensors to better understand the marine environment and manage conservation efforts. This is allowing them to identify where meadows of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica, which are "absolutely vital" to the Mediterranean ecosystem, persist, Callari says. Overall, Callari says she wishes the rest of the world and tourists visiting the Mediterranean were more informed about the pressures the marine ecosystem faces. "I grew up here, and now that I go back to certain places where I was as a child, and they are just completely different places to me. Places that were just nature and were difficult to access. Now they have very easy access on cars, buses. You can go on boat tours very easily. And I think we don't appreciate enough the impact that has on the environment. On the sea."
