Today we are talking to Mason Branstrator in the second of a two-part series on supporting general wellness while living with a Spinal Cord Injury. Quinn Brett, U2FP's Development and fellow wellness pursuer is joining me for the discussion. Mason Branstrator is a dynamic and influential personality in the world of Spinal Cord Injury and his mission is to improve life for our community in any way that he can. Mason's social media presence is one platform that he uses to accomplish this goal. His reels grace my Instagram feed from time to time and I am consistently impressed with his content, especially as it pertains to health and wellness. In light of the wear and tear that full time advocacy can have on our population, it is important to remember to take care of ourselves so that we can keep showing up to the front lines and maintain our general quality of life. In these two episodes we discuss low-cost or free, accessible tools for self care that have been staples for myself, Quinn and Mason. We frame this discussion using the 6 Pillars of Lifestyle Medicine, which are: Nutrition, Exercise, Sleep, Stress Management, Substance Management and Relationships or Purpose. In this episode we cover the last three pillars.

October is Menopause Awareness Month, and this year's theme is Lifestyle Medicine — a subject that's right at the heart of my work as a nutritionist. In this solo episode of The Happy Menopause, I'll be exploring how simple, sustainable changes in the way we eat, move, sleep, and manage stress can transform your menopause experience. We'll look at the six key pillars of lifestyle medicine — nutrition, movement, sleep, stress management, healthy relationships, and avoiding harmful substances — and how they apply specifically to perimenopause and postmenopause. From the power of protein for energy, muscle and mood, to the benefits of leafy greens, vitamin C, and phytoestrogens, I'll share practical diet tips that can ease symptoms such as hot flushes, brain fog, low mood, weight gain, and poor sleep. But lifestyle medicine is about more than food. We'll also explore the role of exercise for bone health, cardiovascular fitness and hormone balance, why stress management is so crucial for symptom control, and the sleep strategies that can help you finally get some rest. These small steps don't replace medical treatments, but they work beautifully alongside them, helping you to address the root causes of symptoms and protect your long-term health.Whether you're just starting your perimenopause journey, navigating postmenopause, or supporting someone you love, this episode is packed with evidence-based advice to help you feel stronger, more resilient and more in control. If you love The Happy Menopause, please tell your friends and family, and don't forget to hit follow or subscribe on your favourite podcast platform. In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Tila Kansagra, also known as The Plant Promoting Doctor on YouTube. Dr. Tila is Board Certified in Lifestyle Medicine, holds a certificate in Plant Based Nutrition, and works as a GP and private lifestyle coach. She supports clients with their health and weight loss goals by focusing on the six key pillars of lifestyle medicine—nutrition, movement, sleep, stress management, healthy relationships, and avoidance of risky substances—alongside their medical care. We talked about her personal health journey, how lifestyle medicine has shaped her practice with patients, and the importance of making small, sustainable changes that truly last. We also touched briefly on the misconception that carbs are to blame for type 2 diabetes. Research has shown that intramyocellular lipids play an important role in insulin sensitivity, and vegans have been found to have about 30% lower levels. For anyone interested, here's the study I mentioned: “A low fat vegan diet and a conventional diabetes diet in the treatment of type 2 diabetes: a randomized controlled 74-week clinical trial.” Learn more about Dr. Tila on her YouTube Channel @plant_promoting_doctor, her Instagram @plant_promoting_doctor, and her website plantpromotingdoctor.com. ____________________________________________________________________

We're bringing back another great episode for our special Menopause Matters Season – this time with the brilliant Angela Counsel. Angela is a naturopath, kinesiologist, and mindset coach working with women in midlife. Like me, she's on a mission to spread the word that menopause doesn't have to be a struggle. It can be a time of stepping into your wisdom and falling in love with yourself and your life. In this episode, I dive into the complexities of autoimmunity and the gut-brain axis with Dr. Datis Kharrazian, one of the leading voices in functional medicine. What strikes me about our conversation is how he connects the dots between environment, genetics, and lifestyle, painting a clear picture of why autoimmune diseases are on the rise and why they're so difficult to treat. Dr. Kharrazian breaks down how and why the immune system malfunctions, and more importantly, how lifestyle adaptations can play a pivotal role in managing these conditions. Together, we explore the principles of functional medicine and how they reshape chronic disease care, while also looking at the latest insights into the gut microbiome, its impact on brain health, and the links to conditions like Alzheimer's and long COVID. This episode is packed with professional insights, practical takeaways, and a vision of how functional medicine can transform patient care in today's world. Key Takeaways: Autoimmunity occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues, with factors such as environmental exposure and genetic susceptibility being key contributors. Functional medicine prioritizes enhancing bodily functions rather than simply inhibiting disease symptoms, offering a promising approach for managing chronic diseases. Lifestyle factors like sleep, stress management, and exercise play a crucial role in managing autoimmune conditions and maintaining overall health. The gut-brain axis is integral to understanding and treating neurological conditions, with bidirectional communication between these systems influencing health outcomes. Precision diagnostics and individualized care models are essential for effective functional medicine practice, emphasizing the need for education in the field. Dr. Datis Kharrazian is a clinical research scientist, academic professor, and a functional medicine healthcare provider. He is an Associate Clinical Professor at Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Dr. Kharrazian earned a PhD in Health Science with concentrations in immunology and toxicology, and a Doctor of Health Science degree from Nova Southeastern University. He also holds a Master of Science degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport, a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Southern California University of Health Sciences, and a Master of Medical Sciences degree in Clinical Investigation from Harvard Medical School. Dr. Kharrazian completed his post-doctoral research training at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. He was a researcher at Harvard Medical School for seven years. Currently, he serves as the academic director of the Kharrazian Institute and the Academy of Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine. One of the things I am not particularly proud of is the fact that I don't enjoy reading books. I like to write, but when it comes to reading, I prefer shorter narratives. However, I love to celebrate authors and I'm excited that there has been a renewed interest in physical books. My guest this week is Michelle Haring, owner of Cupboard Maker Books in Enola, PA. Michelle and I talk about the increased interest in physical books that got a boost during Covid; we talk about the business of books, the fact that visitors to Cupboard Maker Books can also rescue a cat; and we chat about Michelle's life before owning the bookstore. One of those people at the forefront is Dr Darshan Shah, a board certified surgeon who has performed over 20,000 surgical operations, including trauma and complex reconstructive procedures. As a Longevity Medicine specialist, he has advised thousands of patients on how to optimize their well-being and extend their healthspan and lifespan.Dr. Shah earned his medical degree at the age of 21, becoming one of the youngest doctors in the United States. He continued his training at the Mayo Clinic, has authored numerous papers and patented medical devices. Dr. Shah's belief in continual education and self-improvement has earned him alumni status at Harvard Business School, Singularity University, and other prestigious institutions.Today I sat down with Darshan at one of his Next Health Clinic branches in West Hollywood to discuss the 4 pillars of longevity, which are …Lifestyle Medicine - diet, sleep and exerciseFunctional Medicine - detoxification, emotional health, hormones, inflammationPreventative Medicine - screening for heart health, brain health and cancerLongevity medicine - peptides, supplements, IVs and more
