Leveling Up: Creating Everything From Nothing with Natalie Jill
Five weeks ago, I could barely sit without pain. Bending over to brush my teeth required a strategic plan involving core activation and glute squeezing. Sneezing meant grabbing onto furniture for dear life. Today? I'm sitting comfortably having this conversation with my neurosurgeon about why disc replacement surgery changed everything. In this episode, join me and Dr. Jared Ament as we dive deep into the world of motion-preserving spine surgery. You'll discover why spinal fusion became the "standard of care" (hint: it wasn't because it was the best option), how disc replacement technology has evolved to achieve 96% success rates, and why insurance companies still call a procedure with 20+ years of data "experimental." Dr. Ament reveals the shocking truth about why most surgeons don't offer disc replacement, the real recovery differences between fusion and motion preservation, and what actually happens when you go "through the stomach" for spine surgery. We also tackle the controversial emotional vs. mechanical pain debate, discuss when stem cells actually help (and when they don't), and explore why chronic NSAID use might be sabotaging your healing. Whether you or a loved one suffer from degenerative disc disease, bulging or ruptured discs, this episode is packed with valuable insights from both a patient's and a surgeon's perspective. Also, discover the benefits of nootropics in surgical recovery and daily cognitive function. What is measles - a refresher? Measles is a serious, highly contagious and potentially deadly viral infection. It is caused by an RNA paramyxovirus. It is spread by contact with droplets from an infected person's nose, mouth or throat. Sneezing and coughing can aerosolize the droplets and increase the range of infectious spread. Symptoms usually develop 8 to 10 days following exposure to an infected individual. A sick individual is contagious for 4 days before and 4 days after symptom onset. The reproductive rate is very high at 12+ meaning that 1 person will infect 12 and those 12 will get 12 more sick (144) and then 144 X 12 = 1728 X 12 = 20,736 and you are off to the exponential races....Plus, The Shock of a New Diagnosis: A Stoic Path Through the Storm. Life gets messy when we're caught between reacting and responding, especially when faced with challenging people. In the absence of their Producer Sara (who's off enjoying South African villas), Kat dives into the world of podcast editing—complete with an impromptu meditation backed by Heart's rock anthem "I Didn't Want to Need You." This lighthearted start quickly evolves into a vulnerable exploration of how we handle difficult conversations.Ever had to deal with someone whose ego is completely wrapped up in metrics and success? Kat and Moose unpack the delicate art of supporting creative people through their ups and downs without becoming the target of blame when things inevitably fluctuate. They share personal strategies for maintaining composure, including Kat's approach of viewing difficult adults as children having tantrums: "You're just throwing a fit right now. I'm going to let you finish your fit, you'll be exhausted, and then you'll fall asleep."The conversation takes a fascinating turn when they connect physical experiences to emotional processing. Kat describes how a simple sneeze released pent-up negative energy, which Moose brilliantly ties to Chinese medicine concepts about seasonal transitions and the body's natural ability to "let come and let go." This leads to revelations about neuroplasticity and how our brains create pathways for coping mechanisms that remain available even after we've moved on—"It's not like the pathway gets erased."Between profound insights, the hosts share hilarious stories about flipping off Teslas, Amy Poehler's perfect response to being called "the poor man's Tina Fey," and mysterious childhood memories of abandoned buildings. These raw, unfiltered moments remind us we're all just humans trying to navigate life's complexities, sometimes as our adult selves and sometimes as the six-year-olds inside us who decided long ago they needed to take charge.Listen now to find your own balance between reacting and responding as we explore the quirks of being human together.Support the showFollow us on Instagram and Facebook!
