#140: To celebrate Anosmia Awareness Day, in this episode, Frauke sits down with acquired anosmic Katie Boateng and congenital anosmic Dia Kline to discuss the state of anosmia five years on from COVID. Katie and Dia begin by giving their report card for general public awareness, the anosmia community, doctors, and the scientific community before the pandemic, and where they believe we stand today. They then share what it's been like navigating life with no sense of smell since Anosmia was finally “put on the map”. Katie and Dia also talk about how to best continue to get the message out about anosmia and what ONE thing needs to be done to really, truly make a difference. Finally, they share what they hope to see happen in the next 5 years, and tell us how we can best support the anosmia community. This conversation is an honest, yet hopeful look at the state of anosmia today. This week we will discuss olfactory disorders, or problems with smelling either good or bad chemicals, foods, fragrances, and the like. Did you know your sense of smell also affects your taste? A damaged sense of olfaction is severely disrupting: the joy of eating and drinking may be lost, and depression may result. There could also be dangers associated with the loss of smell, including the inability to detect leaking gas or spoiled food. More than 2.7 million people in the United States have an olfactory disorder, and this is likely an underestimate. Some people have suggested that about half of people over the age of 60 have a decreased sense of smell.
In this podcast, Laura Swoboda, DNP, APNP, FNP-C, CWOCN-AP, discusses how a clinician's sense of smell is crucial to detecting infection. COVID-19 related anosmia creates issues for clinicians, which Dr. Swoboda considers and tries to problem solve.

COVID-19 doesn't make headlines like it did six months ago. Most people are mentally and physically past infections, as well as the media's constant barrage of fear porn. Though the infections may be more rare today, many people continue to deal with long-lasting effects, a condition called long-haul COVID-19. When this was first discovered, many believed it to be a rare condition. However, some studies now suggest that up to 73% of people who had COVID-19 develop long-term symptoms. Among the symptoms, fatigue ranks at the top. A new study looked at how a specific blend of essential oils affected feelings of fatigue and vigor in a group of women dealing with long-haul COVID-19-related fatigue. The results were pretty impressive. Symptoms of Long-Haul COVID-19 SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, affects vascular and nervous system tissues, though the specific tissues it impacts varies from person to person. The virus most commonly infects respiratory vessels, but does much more than harm your lungs. The following table outlines the more than 40 symptoms of long-haul COVID-19. I've listed them in the order of frequency. Symptoms of Long-Haul COVID-19FatigueHeadacheAttention disorderHair lossDyspnea (shortness of breath)Ageusia (loss of taste)Anosmia (loss of smell)Post-activity polypnea (rapid breathing)Joint painCoughSweatNausea or vomitingChest pain or discomfortWeight LossCutaneous signsResting heart rate increasePalpitationsPainIntermittent feverSleep disorderReduced pulmonary capacitySleep apneaChillsMental healthPsychiatric illnessRed eyesPulmonary fibrosisDiscontinuous flushingDiabetes mellitusSputum (thick mucus)Limb edemaDizzinessStrokeThroat painMood disordersDysphoriaOCDNew hypertensionMyocarditisRenal failurePTSDArrhythmia (irregular heart beat)Paranoia Though it wasn't on the list above, recent evidence shows that a COVID-19 infection can also lead to low testosterone in men. For those who've paid attention to the COVID-19 vaccine side effects, you'll see that many match those of actual infections. In fact, myocarditis seems to show up more often from the vaccine than from an infection, especially in healthy, young adults and children. Of course, you don't hear much about vaccine side effects from mainstream media. Getting back to long-haul COVID-19, 58% of people with it develop fatigue. The fatigue is a feeling of exhaustion in spite of good sleep quality and nutrition. In some, the fatigue may be connected with other symptoms, such as shortness of breath or the development of diabetes. In others, the fatigue could be connected to nervous system issues that also lead to fatigue, such as chronic pain. In either case, chronic fatigue compromises productivity and makes it less likely people will exercise or remain active, which can lead to additional health complications. As the study's authors explained: Fatigue differs from sleepiness in that it encompasses a feeling of exhaustion and tiredness regardless of sleep quantity and quality. It is a nonspecific symptom that leads to a reduced overall capacity to accomplish routine tasks. This may involve the inability to initiate activity, inability to continue routine activities, or difficulty focusing and concentrating, with symptoms worsening after physical or mental exertion.Hawkins J, et al. If there was a way to reduce feelings of fatigue, even if it didn't resolve the underlying issue, without compromising one's health, it could significantly improve your quality-of-life. The important point here is that a natural or pharmaceutical therapy that reduces fatigue and increases energy and vigor is only valuable if it doesn't lead to other side effects. For example, you could certainly boost your energy by drinking a couple of Red Bulls or taking an Adderall, but you'd do so while potentially causing other health complications. On the other hand, if you could boost your energy without sacrificing your heal...

Jacob also explains what sense of smell means to him, how he responds when people ask him about smells, and what questions are least helpful for anosmics to hear. Importantly, Jacob shares what those who can smell can do to support the anosmia community (hint: it begins with awareness), and what he wants those living with anosmia to know. Sarah Davis MD is a board certified family medicine physician. She launched her concierge medical practice in Dallas almost 20 years ago, the first of its kind in the area. She has built up a very successful practice using this model, which many have emulated. In 2020 as the pandemic was raging she wanted to find a way to screen patients for COVID in a simple cost effective way. She had witnessed that very few of her COVID patients had a fever, so doing temperature screens did not seem very effective. When her own daughter contracted COVID she was struck by the symptom of anosmia, something she had not encountered in any other infectious diseases. She set about to create a simple cheap way to check for anosmia and the SAFER (Symptoms of Anosmia for Early Recognition) Card was born. Pairing a web based app with a scratch off scent enables the user to quickly find out if they have a diminished sense of smell. Designing a product and going through all the stages of launch from building the technology to sales and marketing has been an incredible learning process. https://www.saferdiagnostics.com/ Get 1 CME credit for reflecting on this podcast https://earnc.me/TF4tZY -------------------------------- About FPE If you are a women physician, join us at Female Physician Entrepreneurs Group We learn and grow together https://www.facebook.com/groups/FemalePhysicianEntrepreneurs Our website https://FPEStrong.com #runningcoach #womeninmedicine #womeninbusiness. #healthtech
Barry and Abigail discuss Coconut Telegraph by Jimmy Buffett and sample Key Largo Passionfruit Lager, Bloody Iguana, Resistant Strain Double Hibiscus Kolsch, Cranberry Cinnamon Sour, and Kritter Needs Jesus from Florida Keys Brewing Company in Islamorada, Florida. Before medical school, Barry's entire knowledge of Jimmy Buffett consisted of Margaritaville and Come Monday. Barry recalled first hearing Why Don't We Get Drunk on the jukebox at the now-defunct CJ's Oyster Bar in Gainesville, Florida. Abigail's first exposure to Jimmy Buffett was The Parakeet Album, a collection of Buffett hits sung by the W. O. Smith Music School singers. This reminded Barry of Disney Songs the Satchmo Way by Louis Armstrong. Justin and Dr. Sydnee McElroy discuss Buffett's medical maladies on Sawbones: A Marital Tour of Misguided Medicine, episode 374: Jimmy Buffett. Abigail thought the opening of The Good Fight by Jimmy Buffett sounds like the opening of Ricochet by David Bowie. As always, the “Anosmia” jingle was performed by our friend Pete Coe! Barry and Abigail discuss Little Creatures by Talking Heads and sample Splash Pad, Sour Slurps Disco Future, Snake Jazz, and Ninja Juice from Invasive Species Brewing in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Abigail recalled seeing David Byrne at the Hollywood Bowl as part of KCRW's World Music Festival. Read this review of show's premiere on June 26, 2005, featuring David Byrne, Arcade Fire, Si*Sé, and the Extra Action Marching Band. Abigail feels that this album “lives in the same space” in her head as Business as Usual by Men at Work, which we previously reviewed in #10: Drinking as Usual. Barry thought that Television Man told a story similar to Being There starring Peter Sellers, based on a Jerzy Kosiński novel. Abigail thought the gospel choir used to open Road to Nowhere was similar to the a cappella opening of Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes by Paul Simon. Perfume has been linked to civilisation as far back as we can go. It is known that before the Battle of Thermopylae the Spartan warriors, knowing they were going to die fighting off the Persians, bathed and perfumed themselves to meet their death smelling good. In this episode, Ikramuddin Zwane, a self-taught perfumer from Johannesburg, South Africa, opens a door onto the world of scent, olfaction and the art of perfumery alongside reflections from his journal of perfumery. Marina Barcenilla is a multi-award winning Independent Perfumer and Fragrance Educator with two decades of experience as a Perfumer and natural fragrance specialist. In addition to being the Nose behind her two niche perfume brands, Marina Barcenilla Parfums and AromAtom, she creates fragrance for other British brands and has mentored a number of perfumers who have founded their own brands. She's also a Planetary Scientist and an Astrobiology Doctoral Researcher. Her scientific research is currently focused on the search for life on Mars with the Perseverance and Rosalind Franklin Mars Rovers. She has managed to combine her two passions, fragrance and space, to create a science education project that uses fragrance and the sense of smell to teach people about Astronomy and space exploration called “AromAtom: Discover the Smell of Space”.She recently received and Academic medal from the Spanish Academy of Perfume in recognition of her two decades of work as a Nose, and of her approach to science communication using the sense of smell. As an Academician of this not-for-profit foundation, her role is to contribute to the advancement of perfume as an artistic discipline, and to the study of fragrance, its influence and potential within other fields.” It was great to have a chat with Marina, I am taking her Natural Perfumery course on line and so had lots to ask her about, including her journey to becoming a perfumer, how synthetics are used in fragrance and how they compare to using natural ingredients in perfumery. We also talked about sustainability and the potential toxicity in natural essential oils. We also chatted about loosing your sense of smell (anosmia) and how covid has pushed that to the front of peoples minds about her work in science and research as she hopes to encourage more children to enjoy science and space.
In this episode, Frauke Galia of F.A.L.K. Aromatherapy and the Podcast, An Aromatic Life, explains what she does to train people who have loss their sense of smell. Anosmia can be the result of a viral infection, which are known to directly damage olfactory sensory neurons. The COVID-19 Virus has caused people to lose their sense of smell. In addition, Frauke talks about the diminishing sense of smell for people starting at the age of 65. Detailed information and links we discussed on the Podcast can be found at my blog - https://livingsenior.me
In this podcast, Laura Swoboda, DNP, APNP, FNP-C, CWOCN-AP, discusses how a clinician's sense of smell is crucial to detecting infection. COVID-19 related anosmia creates issues for clinicians, which Dr. Swoboda considers and tries to problem solve.
It's Episode 4, Smell Loss and Dysfunction. The Absence of a sense of smell is called Anosmia. Some are born without it, and others lose it for a variety of reasons, including head trauma or illness, such as a viral infection. When smell loss emerged as a feature of Covid-19 in March of 2020, it signaled a change for the field of chemosensory research, meaning the research of smell and taste, our chemical senses. It's estimated that over 9 million people worldwide will have sustained smell loss. The community of scientists and patients who were studying and dealing with smell loss and dysfunction are at a unique moment, and they have responded in powerful ways. Jenifer Trachtman, Director of Development at the Monell Chemical Senses Center, will share resources, and talk about this turning point in her field and what moving forward looks like. We'll hear from Dr. Danielle Reed, a researcher at the Monell Center and one of the founding members of the Global Consortium for Chemosensory Research, better known as the GCCR, which is a group of dedicated scientists and advocates that formed to share information and advance scientific knowledge about the correlation between the chemical senses and respiratory illnesses like Covid-19. Katie Boateng, an anosmic patient advocate herself, is the creator of the Smell Podcast. She'll share her wisdom from over 90 episodes. While this episode will focus mostly on Anosmia, you'll also hear mentions of Smell Dysfunctions. Parosmia is a distorted sense of smell, where things that used to smell nice can smell unpleasant. Hyposmia is a decreased sense of smell, and Phantosmia is a condition where smells are perceived that are not there, it's sometimes referred to as having olfactory hallucinations. Please check out the resources offered in this episode and if you or a loved one is new to smell loss or dysfunction, from Covid or otherwise, pull up, this one's for you.

Yazmin Salazar has Congenital Anosmia. That is, she's missing one of the basic human senses. She was born with the inability to smell. She says when she initially tells people of her condition, they tend to either discount her or dismiss her. But, living with the inability to smell comes with daily stresses, anxieties and even dangers. She talks about how she used to keep it secret, but now she's on a mission to use a little humor to spread awareness about this invisible disability and create a space for others like her to find support. Yazmin has created a blog and podcast and is also now working on a children's book about the condition.
