Why We Eat Our Feelings (and What to Do Instead)—Tricia Nelson Explains

LET IT OUT

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 4, 2025 45:48

In this episode, I talk with author and emotional-eating expert Tricia Nelson about why we turn to food for comfort, what emotional eating actually is (it's not about willpower), and how to build a life that makes late-night kitchen raids less inevitable. We get into compulsions, body image, aging, intimacy, the “tiger out of the cage” metaphor, and why healing has way more to do with buried feelings and stress patterns than with food itself. It's an honest, tender conversation about breaking cycles, lowering pressure, and learning to feel instead of numb.Show Notes:Emotional Eating Free QuizBook: Heal Your Hunger: 7 Simple Steps to End Emotional Eating NowInstagram: @tricianelson_Website: healyourhunger.comPodcast: Heal Your Hunger Show on Apple PodcastsFind Katie:Katie's Substack | IG: @letitouttt + @katiedalebout  | Zine shop is here!My Creative Clinic. Book Let It Out: A Journey Through JournalingIf you liked this episode, try this one from the archive: Episode 422 | Well-being > Wellness: Christy Harrison on the Care Effect, the Wellness Trap, History of Hysteria & Much More

"I hear from people every single day about how they've been harmed physically and emotionally by things that influencers and content creators online have sold to them."You've probably noticed diet trends come and go, from raw vegan frugivore diets to the current protein obsession, but what's less obvious is how healing your relationship with food changes more than just how you eat. It shifts how you feel, how you relate to others, and even how you view your past. In my conversation with Registered Dietitian and content creator, Abbey Sharp, we dig deep into the messy middle of food healing: from the anger and blame many of us experience at the start, to the compassion and empathy that grows with time.We look back on diet trends that might make you say, “Wait, did we really do that?” - like viral fruit-only diets and food combining rules. Abbey shares her journey combating misinformation online, the harm caused by extreme influencers, and how relentless trends keep fueling confusion and frustration. Together, we talk about the power of not rushing healing and why allowing yourself to feel and reflect can eventually make empathy come easily and naturally. From what it's like to be on the receiving end of body comments, to how embracing a balanced, non-extreme way of eating is truly health-promoting, this episode reminds us that while diet culture is loud, you are not alone in your healing. Whether you're in the thick of it or starting to feel things shift, there is hope for a more peaceful, intuitive relationship with food. What You'll Learn:What it looks like to move from anger and resentment to compassion and empathy in your food healing journeyHow diet culture trends from the early 2010s to today's “SkinnyTok” cause real harm, especially onlineWhy quick fixes and extreme approaches are not sustainable, and what truly promotes lasting healthHow Abbey handled body comments during a challenging season, and her advice for setting boundariesWhat “fake it till you make it” means when it comes to practicing food freedom and body neutralityThe biggest nutrition myths still floating around online (and which one Abbey would love to erase forever!)Whether you feel stuck or frustrated in your journey, I promise you are not alone in questioning diet culture. I'm so grateful Abbey shared the science, her sass, and her vulnerable real-life stories on the show.Abbey's Resources:TikTokInstagramYouTubePodcast: Bite Back with Abbey SharpGrab the free Honoring Fullness Checklist at DietCultureRebel.com/Checklist to start building a more positive relationship with food.Come back next week for another episode and connect with me over on Instagram at @diet.culture.rebelStruggling with food, but not sure where to start? You don't have to feel 100% ready to get support. In this episode of the PCOS Repair Podcast, I'm excited to share Jasmine's story, a former patient whose struggles with PCOS, body image, and burnout may sound all too familiar. Jasmine's experience reflects the pressure many women feel to constantly push harder, dieting, overtraining, and trying to force their bodies into submission, only to feel like they're getting nowhere. If you've ever felt like your efforts weren't enough or your body was working against you, this episode offers a powerful shift in perspective and practical encouragement. When Your Body Says "Enough": The Turning PointAt just 26, Jasmine felt completely burned out. Her periods had stopped, her energy was gone, and her hair was thinning. Despite years of eating “good” and intense workouts, her body felt like it was shutting down. Lab results revealed exactly that, low estrogen and progesterone, nutrient deficiencies, and sky-high stress hormones. But instead of labeling her body as broken, Jasmine began to understand that her symptoms were signals. Her body wasn't failing, it was crying out for help. Rebuilding from the Inside Out: Food, Movement, and MindsetIn this episode, you'll discover what Jasmine did differently that finally helped her make lasting progress. How she stopped eliminating things from her diet and began nourishing her body instead. How her exercise routine shifted from punishment to partnership with her body. Along the way, she dismantled the shame and perfectionism that had fueled her yo-yo cycles for years. She didn't do it perfectly, but she kept showing up for herself in a new, more supportive way.The Power of Listening to Your BodyOne of the most inspiring parts of Jasmine's story is how her emotional transformation mirrored her physical healing. As her cycle returned, her energy lifted, and her hair thickened, she also began to feel like herself again—confident, calm, and empowered. She stopped measuring her worth by her weight or workouts and started tuning in to what actually made her feel strong, alive, and aligned with her body. That's the magic of healing from PCOS, not just fixing symptoms, but building a relationship with your body that's rooted in trust and care.If you've been stuck in patterns of restriction, shame, or frustration, this episode is your reminder that you are not broken. You don't need to try harder, instead listen, support, and nourish. Jasmine's story shows what's possible when you stop fighting your body and begin to work with it. Healing may not be fast, but it is possible, and it starts with intention, not perfection. You'll walk away from this episode with a renewed sense of hope and clarity for your own PCOS journey. You can take the quiz to discover your root cause hereLet's continue the conversation on Instagram! What did you find helpful in this episode and what follow-up questions do you have? The full list of Resources & References Mentioned can be found on the Episode webpage at:https://nourishedtohealthy.com/ep-166

How we care for ourselves is inextricably connected to how we lead.In a culture where we moralize health and sell wellness as a symbol of worth, where we're obsessed with productivity and optimization, our relationships with food and our bodies go beyond personal struggles. They shape how we lead, how we show up for others, and how we define success. When leaders model extreme routines, restrictive regimens, or performance-based wellness, they may unintentionally perpetuate shame and comparison–even if they intend to inspire or be helpful. This isn't a dismissal of health. Caring for our bodies, feeding ourselves well, and seeking movement that feels good and helps our bodies be strong are powerful acts of self-respect. But when an obsession with performance and purity–whether through hustle culture or “clean” living–erodes our self-trust and amplifies our inner critics, it becomes a leadership issue.Today's guest is an eating disorder specialist who understands how shame, perfectionism, and chronic striving get tangled up in how we feed and care for ourselves, and how we show up in the world. Unburdening our relationship with food and body isn't just about health; it's a powerful leadership move.As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Jeanne Catanzaro has specialized in treating eating issues and trauma for close to 30 years. She trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy, Somatic Experiencing and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) before discovering the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model. Dr. Catanzaro served as the director of a day treatment program for eating disorders for two years and is currently the Vice President of the Internal Family Systems Institute.
