What to listen for:Our hosts Robin, Stacy, and Crystal tackle not just the technical, but also the legal considerations of cross-training your dogs. After all, when a dog is run through both narcotics and explosives detection work and engaged in a high-stakes operation, the consequences can be disastrous if they are unable to respond to the right odors on time–simply because their training emphasizes diversity over specialization. At the same time, if done strategically, it is possible to cross-train in order to supplement detection ability, rather than cause frustration as odors compete in the field. But it's not just your dog's interests and strengths that you have to consider, but your own as a handler as well. The Dames of Detection invite us to find our “why” when thinking about cross-training our canine. We need to consider our particular skill set and career goals before adding more training to our plate. Are you more interested in athletics and competition, or are you dedicated exclusively to search-and-rescue? In this archive special from November 2021, Jim Tew and Kim Flottum explore the fascinating—and sometimes unpleasant—world of bee yard smells. Odors are an integral part of the beekeeping experience, offering clues about the hive's health and activity. From the smoky aroma of a well-used smoker to the sour, unmistakable stench of a dead-out hive, every scent tells a story. Jim and Kim share their insights on favorite smoker fuels and how the choice of fuel creates unique and nostalgic scents. They also reflect on the comforting, familiar smells of stored beekeeping equipment, which often evoke memories of time spent in the apiary. The conversation delves into the sharp, almond-like warning of sting pheromones and the critical importance of recognizing the sour, unpleasant odor of American foulbrood to protect your bees. Whether the smells are good, bad, or downright disagreeable, they are a part of every beekeeper's journey. Join Jim and Kim as they recount their experiences, share advice, and reflect on how the aromas of the bee yard are as much a part of beekeeping as the bees themselves. What happens when regulations intended to protect start feeling like overreach? Join us as we invite Cleo, a seasoned property manager with over 15 years of experience, to unpack the evolving landscape of New South Wales strata laws. Cleo shares her expert insights on the intricacies of smoke drift and odorous nuisances in unit communities, highlighting how bylaws and committee powers have transformed the tenant-landlord dynamic. We explore the growing tension between necessary regulations and their unintended consequences, like bizarre new laws requiring landlords to pay for lost keys. Cleo paints a vivid picture of the challenges faced by both non-smokers and smokers, including the unexpected side effects of trying to keep the smoke out.Our discussion digs into why smoking complaints are on the rise, despite smokers following the once-accepted balcony rule. With more stringent bylaws empowering committees, what used to be a decades-old nuisance has now become a major issue. Cleo shares real-life stories, such as tenants who refuse to open windows to avoid smoke, ultimately leading to mold problems. We also touch on the parallels with other contentious strata issues, like pet ownership, revealing how living in shared spaces requires navigating a complex web of ever-evolving regulations. Tune in to hear how Cleo's experience sheds light on maintaining harmony in these communities while balancing individual freedoms and collective responsibilities.
Good Day and welcome to IAQ Radio+ episode 741 this week we welcome Dr. William Chapman to talk about chemical monitoring for IAQ and odors. Air by CC² Inc (AbC) was founded by William Chapman, PhD in response to his experiences working in the air testing industry to provide proven solutions to problems in indoor air. He has PhD in Chemistry from Penn State and completed postdoctoral studies at Columbia University. AbC is built on his education and years of industrial experience, mainly developing new and improved methods for point-of-care (i.e. onsite) testing. In previous employment, he became frustrated with the lack of a proven solution to problems that his lab found, especially in the home indoor air setting as well as with the quality of the point-of-care samplers that are in use today.

Memory loss is often cited as one of the most worrying aspects of growing older. But what if the section of the brain that's responsible for memory could be stimulated by simply sniffing a few pleasant odors? There is extensive research pointing to a relationship between exposure to different smells and memory improvement. A clinical trial led by Prof. Michael Leon at the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior, University of California, Irvine, suggests the loss of olfaction can cause the memory parts of the brain to deteriorate, while adding more smell experiences can improve memory. The research also explores the use of environmental enrichment, as it's known, to treat neurological disorders like autism. Prof. Leon's team used diffusers to release various essential oils while participants slept, leading to improved memory and sleep. The results suggest that exposure to smells like orange and lemon significantly improves memory in older adults, with some experiencing a 226% increase.Researchers have developed a device called Memory Air that automatically emits odors while individuals sleep, providing the brain with the necessary stimulation. In this interview we discuss the evidence and explore why such an approach could be valuable not only in improving memory but overall well-being.▸ Read a transcript of this conversation + additional show-notes DISCOUNTSThis site includes affiliate links from which we derive a small commission, if you click on the product links and use the code LLAMA at checkout. Today, we're going to talk about one of the hidden causes of chronic sinus congestion. Microorganisms in your pillow could be causing sinus pressure, nasal congestion, difficulty breathing, and snoring! The average pillow has 7000 spores of 4 to 16 different types of fungus, especially if your pillow is made of synthetic material. The fungus found in your pillow is a frequent cause of rhinitis, or inflammation of the sinuses. The fungus feeds on nitrogen and dead skin—and can affect the respiratory system. Fungus spores are activated by moisture, so your sweat, drool, and wet hair intensify the problem. Spores can even grow roots into the fibers of your pillow. Here are 4 signs that fungus in your pillow may be causing sinus congestion: 1. Discoloration on the pillow 2. Moisture on the pillow 3. Odors from the pillow 4. Sudden change in mucus membranes (difficulty breathing, stuffy nose) To solve this problem, wash your pillow at least once monthly and ensure it's completely dried. It's also essential to clean your pillowcase at least once per week. Your pillow won't last forever, so be sure to replace it once yearly. Get access to my FREE resources

Over the weekend, Trump called the immigrants 'animals' which means we can presumably treat them like animals but when it comes to animal odors, Trump has a few issues. Let's do a deep dive on the sources and all the possibilities of these odors and get to the BOTTOM -once and for all. #Trumphygiene
We talk about chapters 13 through 16 of Foundation's Edge. We're finally up to the episode where we reveal that Apple TV's Foundation has been renewed for season 3! Not exactly ripped from the headlines. Also, the Great and Glorious Az wants us to know that, like spaceships, other planets have their own distinctive odors. It's true! Captain Kirk could have faced the Gorn on the Moon as astronauts tell us that moondust smells like gunpowder. The atmospheres of Venus and Mars contain hydrogen sulfide, which smells of rotten eggs. Ew. Lucky for you if you took off your helmet on either planet you'd be too busy suffocating or bursting into flames to notice the stench. You get the idea. Still, I'm just happy that this olfactory dissertation doesn't overlap with the exhaustive explorations of restrooms. So we talk about "University," "Forward," "Gaia-S," and "Convergence" from Foundations Edge. There's a nice bit about The Five Sisters, a pentagonal constellation as seen from Sayshell, that plays an important part in the plot. It reminded Joseph of "Constant as the Northern Star" one of Asimov's science essays from the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction which was collected in Of Matters Great and Small. And we go on a bit of a lengthy, but fun. digression. Join us!

In this episode, I interview David Milburn of HypoAir about indoor air quality solutions and filtering. We discuss the problem of mold in homes, the impact of HVAC systems on air quality, and other air quality issues such as odors and off-gassing. We also talk about the importance of air quality as well as the detection and monitoring of air quality. Finally, we discuss different air purification solutions available and exciting developments in air quality technology. In this conversation, Miburn also shares the importance of determining the correct size of HVAC filters and the challenges homeowners face in finding this information. He provides tips for requesting allergy-friendly rooms in hotels (I didn't even know this was a thing!) and addresses air quality issues in malls and commercial spaces. The conversation concludes with a reminder of the importance of maintaining a positive outlook on indoor air quality and an extension of a sale on Hypoair's products.
