Faith and Action - James 2.14-26 by Redeemer Church Podcast
Welcome to the School of Ministry Podcast! In this episode, (which was remastered), we explore the profound message from the Word of God according to James Chapter 1. This emphasizes the importance of being doers of the Word and not just hearers. Through comparisons with Ezekiel and John, James illuminates how true joy stems from obedience to God's Word. We see this stresses the need for active participation in spreading the gospel and the dangers of self-deception if we only listen without action. Join us in a thought-provoking discussion aiming to reignite the essence of Christian living through heartfelt obedience to God's will.
“What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, ‘Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well’—but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do?” (James 2:14–16 NLT) Most people have hidden facets—skills, accomplishments, or sides of their personality that they don’t make known. Some are truly surprising. For instance, Hedy Lamarr was one of the most popular actresses of the 1940s and was often called “the most beautiful woman in film.” What most people didn’t know—and didn’t learn until after her death—is that she was also an inventor whose pioneering work led to Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth technology. Chances are, you have hidden facets, too—things about you that most people don’t know and might be surprised to learn. Your Christian faith shouldn’t be one of them. That’s the message James sends loud and clear. The Lord doesn’t intend for your Christian faith to be a private matter. He wants it to spill out in every area of your life. He wants it to splash over everyone you know and everyone you encounter. He wants your faith to make a real difference in other people’s lives—not with just your words, but with your actions as well. If you’re married, that difference-making starts with your spouse. In Ephesians 5:21–33, the apostle Paul compares the relationship between a husband and wife to the relationship between Jesus and the Church. That’s how seriously God treats marriage. And that’s the reason your spouse should see your faith in action every day, in big things and small. We’re not talking about Christian platitudes—the marital equivalent of “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well.” As James puts it so succinctly, “What good does that do?” We’re talking about tangible acts of love and sacrifice. About putting your faith into action to make your spouse’s life better—which, in turn, makes your relationship better, stronger, and more durable. You show your Christian faith in the way you use your words with your spouse. You resist the urge to criticize and complain. Instead, you look for opportunities to give sincere compliments and encouragement. You also show your faith in the way you deal with conflict. You use words not to attack or blame, but to resolve. You show your faith by listening to your spouse and offering comfort, empathy, or silence, as needed. You show it by making your spouse feel seen, heard, understood, respected, and loved unconditionally. You show your faith by sacrificing your own needs and putting your spouse’s needs first. You show your faith by being faithful—to your marriage vows, of course, but also in smaller things. In the promises you make—to finish a household chore, to pick up a kid from practice, or to go out for a date night. Make your word mean something to your spouse. And you show your faith by prioritizing God’s Word. By studying it together. By praying with and for your spouse every day. Faith in action, like charity, begins at home. James has been offering us wisdom when it comes to doubts during trials, wisdom when we face temptation. What does James have to say in general about wise faith in action? How do we know our faith is real and we're living it out wisely? James might encourage us to take a deep breath, listen to God's Word, and take care of the little people. - Pastor Arek O'ConnellSupport the show

With Liberty & Justice For All, Session 2 of 3 Leftist activism is happy to take direct wins whenever it can get them, but that's not always possible. When it can't get direct wins through the front door, it is also more than happy to get its wins through the back door by exploiting what we can call an action-reaction dynamic. As an act of dialectical political warfare, which is their battle logic, Leftist agitators will provoke a reaction, control the framing around that reaction to a watching audience, and use the reaction as justification to advance their cause. This strategy was articulated by Saul Alinsky as “your enemy's reaction is your real action,” and it forms a backbone for a Leftist two-step of provoke, then advance. Currently, in the United States, recognizing the tremendous challenge conservative Christianity poses to any Marxist takeover of the country, a reactionary movement called “Christian Nationalism” is being repeatedly provoked in the hopes of being able to use that reaction to nullify any Christian resistance to the Woke takeover of the West. In this lecture from Dr. James Lindsay of New Discourses, the nature of the action-reaction dynamic as a tool of political warfare and the example of the setup of Christian Nationalism as a reaction to Woke provocation is laid bare. James 1:19–17 can be divided into 3 general points: 1:19–21 Be hearers (receive with meekness) 1:22–25 Be doers (persevere in obedience) 1:26–27 Be true (test your faith) As those who have been granted new life through God's implanted word, we are called to the active exercise of faith, particularly as we grow to reflect Christ's self-controlled speech, merciful care, and purity of heart. Remember, God is pleased to bless even our small, beginner steps of obedience! This week, perhaps you may spend some time praying for clarity and requesting input from a trusted friend about what faith in action might look like for you in these areas.

SERIES DESCRIPTION: Christians should be known not for their words but by their deeds. Our broken world needs less talk and more action. Faith is a verb. This is the timeless message of the Book of James, written by the half-brother of Jesus about 20 years after Jesus' death, to the early Christians who were struggling with materialism, hypocrisy, pride, favoritism, and slander—many of the same struggles we face nearly 2000 years later. Like a wise mentor, James, in his old age, pens a beautifully written, yet surprisingly simple letter, reminding us of our vital connection to God and to one another, and our non-negotiable commitment to turn our words into deeds by living out our faith in the real world.
True religion is more than hearing and even more than believing, it is building a life that manifests the character of Jesus.

As we conclude our discussion of James D. Thompson's Organizations in Action, we focus on the final chapters where Thompson proposes his theory of administration whose basic function is proposed as co-alignment. This meant that organizations had to synthesize the needs and perspectives of individual members with the many streams of institutionalized action performed by the organization. What would become of the research agenda Thompson proposed nearly 55 years ago?
We will examine James D. Thompson's Organizations in Action: Social Science Bases of Administrative Theory from 1967 that proposed a new theory of administration based on a synthesis of rational and natural models of organization and ushered management into an open-systems paradigm. A class of administrative science that still informs organizational research today!
We examine James D. Thompson's Organizations in Action: Social Science Bases of Administrative Theory from 1967 that established a new direction in organization studies. Beginning with a recapitulation of the theoretical work of the time, Thompson expanded the dominant rational model of organizing with the emerging ideas about human behaviour, complexity, and the relation between organizations and their environments. The result was a proposed theory of administration that remains relevant to this day.
As we draw the curtain on our current series, James: Live the Truth, we end on one of the most difficult truths and controversial topics among believers. Within these teachings, we're reminded that just because someone claims to have faith in Jesus doesn't mean they actually do. This brings us face-to-face with some tough questions: What is genuine faith? What does it look like compared to false faith? How do I know if I have it? As we conclude our message series, James: Live the Truth, James exhorts us that genuine faith is revealed through actions. Listen with us to our newest message, Faith in Action, and come to understand the age-old tension between faith and works!
Continuing on in James, the second chapter introduces some new themes will elaborating on some truths already presented in the first chapter. James places a high priority on morality and ethical responsibility in Christ. As such, there should be no partiality within the Body. Furthermore, the law of liberty we have in Jesus frees us to keep all the commands and live a life worth of His calling. Finally, James extends further the idea of not just hearing but acting upon the word. Faith without works is dead and this is a central focus throughout the book; especially in chapter two.
In our passage today, James further describes what a steadfast and patient Christian should look like. Fore more information about our ministry visit commuterministries.org and follow us on Facebook and Instagram @commuterministries Music by scottholmesmusic.com
