No Veteran Left Behind: Cory Gold's Mission to Bridge the Gap in Veteran Benefits

Lets Have This Conversation

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 2, 2026 63:54

According to the Pew Research Center, approximately 30% of U.S. veterans believe the government provides them with too little help, while only 46% say the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is doing an excellent or good job of meeting veterans' needs. Those numbers highlight a troubling reality: too many veterans are struggling to access the benefits and support they have earned through their service. Every veteran has earned the right to the care and benefits they deserve—but far too many never receive them because they simply don't know where to begin. This week on Let's Have This Conversation, I sit down with Army veteran Cory Gold, whose life changed forever after a parachute failure left him with a broken back and a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Despite qualifying for VA disability benefits, Cory spent four years unaware those benefits even existed. Rather than allowing that experience to define him, he turned it into a mission by founding Worth Their Weight, a nonprofit dedicated to finding the veterans the system has overlooked and connecting them with the benefits they've earned—completely free of charge. During our conversation, Cory explains why VA disability benefits are not charity but compensation earned through service and sacrifice. We discuss the barriers that prevent so many veterans from accessing those benefits, the frustrations of navigating the VA claims process, and why no veteran should have to face that journey alone. Cory also shares how Worth Their Weight is creating meaningful change through its Search & Rescue program, where Field Scouts build trust within local communities, identify veterans who have fallen through the cracks, address immediate needs such as transportation, shelter, or communication, and connect them with VA-accredited Veteran Service Organization (VSO) partners who guide them through the claims process. We also explore the organization's upcoming Vet Connect initiative, which aims to bridge the digital divide by providing veterans with tablets and hands-on training so they can access the benefits, services, and resources available to them. This is more than a conversation about veteran benefits. It's a discussion about leadership, resilience, advocacy, and restoring dignity to the men and women who have sacrificed so much in service to our country. Whether you're a veteran, have a loved one who served, or simply want to better understand the challenges facing those who wore the uniform, this episode offers valuable insight and hope.  Tune in to hear how one veteran transformed his own struggle into a nationwide mission to ensure no veteran is left behind.     Call (833) WTWVets For more information: https://worththeirweight.org/ Follow: @WorthTheirWeight Learn more about your ad choices. Show Notes Bridge the Gap 2026 brought the acute care community together in Chicago for three days of practical learning, fresh ideas and the kind of conversations that continue long after the final session. In this special episode, host Dr. Leo Arguelles moves through the conference floor with co-host Dr. Nicole Neveau, speaking with presenters, attendees and organizers about what they are taking back to practice. The conversations span creative solutions to some of acute care's most persistent challenges. Adam Bridwell describes a three-to-one clinical education model designed to expand placement capacity while supporting clinicians. Grant Bitzer explains how a learning health system can help turn a bedside question into quality improvement, research and sustainable change. Other guests explore post-intensive care syndrome, clearer discharge communication, simulation-based teaching, functional neurologic disorder and the growing role of physical therapists in emergency departments. Just as important, the episode captures the energy behind the work: interprofessional collaboration, mentorship and a community eager to share what is working. With 157 attendees, 24 posters and a record number of educational submissions, Bridge the Gap continues to grow while protecting the connection and exchange that make it distinctive. Today's Guests: Multiple attendees at 2026 Bridge the Gap Conference Guest Quotes: 18:31 Ashley “ What we came up with originally, and Dawn will probably laugh, it’s a massive- massive document. It was a textbook. And we were like- … “Yeah, we gotta shave this down and make it like a guide people can actually use in clinic practice.” Links: https://www.aptaacutecare.org/page/BridgeTheGap2026Conference

Modern Policing Reality Check

A lot of people talk about “how policing has changed,” but we get specific, from the pre-body-cam days to the modern reality where every call can turn into a viral clip and every mistake gets replayed in slow motion. I walk through what the job looked like when I started, why body-worn cameras reshaped police culture, and how new technology like drones can genuinely make scenes safer when used the right way. The problem is the same one I keep seeing everywhere: the public wants expert-level results while agencies often fund and train at a beginner level. Then we dig into a real-world style scenario that keeps popping up across the country: a person filming a bank from a public sidewalk. What can police actually enforce, what's just a complaint, and where do First Amendment rights and property lines collide? We break down civil trespass vs criminal trespass, why “reasonable expectation of privacy” matters, and why it's a red flag when an officer tries to talk their way into authority they don't have. You'll also hear why calling a supervisor can be the smartest move a newer officer makes, even if the first explanation comes out messy. We also talk about the practical side of police work that rarely gets explained well online: how to de-escalate when you know a business is angry, why “check your stuff” saves careers, and how ego turns fixable mistakes into complaints, lawsuits, and mistrust. Plus, I share updates on the Gray Area monologues, how I'm using AI as an organizing tool without letting it speak for me, and a teaser about an upcoming guest the community helped connect. If you care about law enforcement training, police accountability, civil rights, and what good policing looks like when cameras are rolling, hit play.
