On this episode of Infill, YIMBY Law's Executive Director Sonja Trauss sits down with author Marc J. Dunkelman to tackle one of the biggest questions facing Americans today: why are we unable to build the infrastructure, housing, and public works that our communities so desperately need? Drawing from his new book, Why Nothing Works: Who Killed Progress — and How to Bring It Back, Dunkelman explores how even well-intentioned procedural reforms, community protections, and environmental reviews can create veto points that stall change, particularly in housing policy. They also delve into the shift in Americans' connectedness that has impacted our political landscape, what tactics and reforms could cut through the red tape, and how housing advocates can push for structural shifts that unlock homebuilding, transit, and equity. Finally, Marc and Sonja explore the similarities and differences between Dunkelman's thesis in Why Nothing Works and the thesis of Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson in their book, Abundance. In addition to highlighting the challenges of the bureaucratic processes we have now, Dunkelman also encourages readers and listeners of this episode to consider who should have the power to make decisions on behalf of communities. Tune in to hear more about the changes that Dunkelman has written about in American politics, and the historical context of the tension we are still feeling today as we navigate decisions about the architecture of power. Marc J. Dunkelman, fellow at Brown University's Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, discusses his must-read book "Why Nothing Works: Who Killed Progress―and How to Bring It Back." He outlines how well-intentioned progressive instincts to increase dialogue and input have inadvertently created a bureaucratic system of "vetocracy," increased government overregulation and inefficiency, while stifling U.S. manufacturing and innovation that hinders progress. Why Love for the Game Fades – And How to Bring It Back
Why and how did progressives give up on actually building a better society? Marc Dunkelman, author of Why Nothing Works: Who Killed Progress — and How to Bring It Back, joins Bradley to discuss the central problem in American governance — not bad intentions, but a broken architecture of decision making. Power is now so diffused that virtually anyone can block progress, even on widely supported initiatives. “We've put the establishment in a cage," says Dunkelman. "And now we've put the bureaucrats in a cage. And there's no one left with the power to say, 'This is the thing we're going to do.'"This episode was taped at P&T Knitwear at 180 Orchard Street — New York City's only free podcast recording studio.Send us an email with your thoughts on today's episode: info@firewall.media.Be sure to watch Bradley's new TED Talk on Mobile Voting at https://go.ted.com/bradleytuskSubscribe to Bradley's weekly newsletter and follow Bradley on Linkedin + Substack + YouTube.

Danny has devoted his life to improving the literacy aptitudes and attitudes of thousands. When Danny discovered that many of the reading teachers, the parents, community volunteers, and other students that he trained found little time to read for their own personal enjoyment, he began giving them recommendations of short literary works that anyone could read while waiting in a grocery line or sitting at a boring staff meeting. In this episode, Jerry and Stably discuss Why Nothing Works: Who Killed Progress and How to Bring It Back by Mark J. Dunkelman. The conversation centers on Dunkelman's core thesis that modern progressivism has become paralyzed by internal contradictions between its Jeffersonian impulse to decentralize power and its Hamiltonian desire to empower experts and centralized institutions. This unresolved tension has led to procedural gridlock and institutional ineffectiveness, which in turn fuels public distrust and reactionary populism. The hosts compare Dunkelman's analysis to Mancur Olson's and public choice theory, noting that while Dunkelman emphasizes process over interest groups, he largely overlooks incentive structures. Both Jerry and Stably appreciate the book's historical scope and clear narrative but critique its lack of engagement with deeper structural limits and its vague, ultimately inadequate prescriptions for reform. They agree that Dunkelman's call to “restore balance” is insufficient without grappling with constraints inherent in democratic governance.
In this special live edition of Underground Lounge After Hours, we hit Atlanta with the one and only Travis Porter, the rap trio that defined an entire era of house parties, club anthems, and college turn-ups. Shot in front of a live audience in ATL, this episode captures everything you'd want from an After Hours experience: unfiltered stories, nonstop laughs, and a heavy dose of nostalgia. The guys reflect on their early days in the game—how people used to think Travis Porter was one person, how they mastered the art of viral club records before social media took over, and what it was like dominating the college circuit with hits like “Make It Rain” and “Bring It Back.” They share hilarious behind-the-scenes moments, from wild tour stories and random encounters with fans to being locked inside Foot Locker at the height of their fame.As the drinks flow and the vibe loosens up, the conversation drifts into classic After Hours territory. The crew breaks down what it really means to be good in bed, debates whether it's ever okay to date a friend's ex, and confesses to sneaky nights out and unexpected DMs. A few lucky audience members even get their questions answered live.By the end of the episode, it's clear that while the music industry has changed, Travis Porter's energy, chemistry, and influence are still undeniable. From strip club legends to rap innovators, they've stayed true to their sound and their bond, and it shows. If you've ever thrown your hands up at a college party screaming “Turnt Up,” this episode will feel like a family reunion.

When it comes to midlife wellness, it's easy to get lost in complicated protocols, supplements, and conflicting advice. But the truth is: most of the real transformation happens when we focus on the simple things we can actually control. In this video, I'll walk you through the 4 key areas that build the foundation for lasting health: • Nutrition • Movement • Rest & Sleep • Hormonal/Lab Optimization If we consistently take care of these basics — what I often call the “low-hanging fruit” — we give ourselves the best chance at creating our Optimal Older Day in the years ahead. Let's bring it back to basics — and let's start here.
With Republicans in power across all branches of the federal government, Democrats are looking for ways to regain trust and learn how to build things. One book they're looking toward is Marc Dunkelman's: Why Nothing Works: Who Killed Progress―and How to Bring It Back. In this episode, Marc joins Mosheh to discuss how the Democratic distrust of power since the 1960s has led to stagnation and public distrust, paving the way for Donald Trump's election as someone who promises to make things actually happen. He explains how we got from the era of Robert Moses reshaping New York and FDR's New Deal, to a modern day with infrastructure in disrepair nationwide. Plus, some broader historical context: how the dueling mindsets at the heart of progressivism—a need for strong executive action and a mistrust of power— reflects a broader American conflict that goes all the way back to the days of Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. On this episode, Dan Richards talks with Marc Dunkelman, Watson Institute fellow in International and Public Affairs and author of the new book “Why Nothing Works: Who Killed Progress―and How to Bring It Back.” In the book, Dunkelman explores how American progressives transformed from a movement dedicated to ambitious, effective, centralized government projects (think the New Deal or Medicaid) into a movement dedicated to limiting government power. As Marc explains, this wasn't an intentional project but the result of overlapping, competing impulses within the progressive movement and a cultural shift with progressivism in the 20th century, whose effects took decades to fully materialize. In charting this transformation and its effects, Dunkelman explains why today, even when in power, progressives seem unable to achieve their own goals, from increasing housing supply to upgrading infrastructure to decarbonizing our energy grid. He also explains how this shift has shaped our electoral politics and what progressives can do to help get progressivism (and America) working again. From Seattle's decades-long waterfront rebuild to the dysfunction of Penn Station, they explore the messy trade-offs between accountability and action—and ask what it would take to make progress possible again. Marc Dunkelman is a fellow at Brown University's Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs and a former fellow at NYU's Marron Institute of Urban Management. During more than a decade working in politics, he worked for Democratic members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives and as a senior fellow at the Clinton Foundation.
