If your sex life has slowed down… or feels like it disappeared altogether… it doesn't mean the love is gone. What it usually means is something far more common. Your body, your mind, and your relationship rhythms are out of sync. And the good news? That can change. In this episode, I break down why desire fades in long-term relationships, and what actually helps bring it back without pressure, shame, or forcing anything. You'll discover: Why low desire is rarely about attraction and what's actually driving the disconnect beneath the surface The hidden nervous system shift that can shut down sexual desire even in loving relationships Why emotional overwhelm and mental load quietly lower libido and the small shifts that begin to change it What helps your body feel safe enough to want connection again instead of shutting down or pulling away How couples can re-sync instead of drift apart A simple 1-minute intimacy practice that reduces stress and helps reopen emotional and physical connection How to rebuild closeness without pressure, performance, or needing everything to be fixed first If you're in a relationship where one of you wants more intimacy and the other feels shut down… this will help you understand what's really happening underneath the surface and what actually helps bring you back together. Because desire doesn't disappear. It gets buried under stress, disconnection, and lack of support. And it can come back. In evolutionary terms, the last Ice Age was just yesterday. We narrowly missed witnessing creatures like woolly mammoths, short-faced bears, glyptodons, and dire wolves. The late Pleistocene, spanning roughly 50,000 to 12,000 years ago, is marked by the extinction of most large terrestrial animals outside of Africa, likely driven by a combination of climate change and the expansion of modern humans. In this conversation, I speak with paleontologist and Associate Professor of Anatomy at Des Moines University, Julie Meachen. She leads ongoing research at Natural Trap Cave, where she and her team excavate Ice Age mammals each summer. Their work aims to understand how climate change influenced both the morphology and genetics of these animals. By analyzing microfaunal remains and pollen records, they also reconstruct Pleistocene climate conditions in mid-latitude North America. Recently, colossal bioscience announced what it described as the “de-extinction” of the dire wolf. While that claim did not fully hold up, the underlying science is still remarkable. In our discussion, Julie explains what we know about the late Pleistocene ecosystem at the time of the dire wolf's extinction, and what fossil evidence reveals about these animals. We also examine Colossal's announcement, considering whether it was aimed less at the scientific community and more at the public and potential investors. Viewed in that light, the real value of reviving charismatic species like the woolly mammoth or dire wolf may not lie in the animals themselves. Instead, their greatest contribution could be as ambassadors, capturing public imagination and helping drive the development of technologies for genetic rescue and conservation. ►Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/c4lvsreJ-WU ►You can find out more about Julie's work here: https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=-hdi3IUAAAAJ&hl=en https://www.dmu.edu/directory/profile/julie-meachen/

Why does it feel like government can't get things done? From housing to infrastructure to climate, even widely supported policies often stall. In this episode, Boyd Cothran speaks with Marc J. Dunkelman about his new book, Why Nothing Works: Who Killed Progress—and How to Bring It Back. At the center of Dunkelman's argument is a tension inside progressivism itself. Since the late nineteenth century, reformers have oscillated between two competing impulses: a Hamiltonian desire to build strong, capable institutions that can solve large-scale problems, and a Jeffersonian instinct to restrain power, disperse authority, and guard against coercion. The Progressive Era did not resolve this tension—it institutionalized it. In this episode, we explore the Progressive Era origins of this tension, the idea of a “Second Gilded Age,” and what it might mean to build a more effective state today.Further Reading:Marc J. How is governance dysfunction linked to declining ‘middle-ring' community ties?  Marc J. Dunkelman is a fellow at Brown University and a fellow at the Searchlight Institute in Washington, D.C. Marc is also the author of two books, Why Nothing Works: Who Killed Progress—and How to Bring It Back and The Vanishing Neighbor: The Transformation of American Community. Greg and Marc discuss how U.S. progressivism has long been split between a Jeffersonian impulse to decentralize power and curb “bigness” and a Hamiltonian impulse to centralize authority in expert institutions. Marc explains how figures like Robert Moses could push projects through, while today expanded rights, litigation, and procedural checks—driven by 1960s–70s distrust of authority (Vietnam, civil rights failures, environmental and consumer scandals, Watergate-era culture)—have reduced discretion so much that even widely supported projects stall.  *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.* Episode Quotes: Why is it so hard to build things? 44:34: You're awarding rights to classes of individuals who have long been stepped on by powerful people. And, like, award these new standing. Exactly. To your point, in order to reduce the discretion of the would-be Robert Moses, who would make that choice on their own without ever really thinking through, alright, now that all these people have, like, a voice, how are we going to resolve that? And to this day, I don't think the progressives have actually answered that question. I don't think that we have in our minds even a system by which you would make trade-offs between those groups. And it's one of the reasons, to your point, it's so hard to build things, like, if everyone wants that new road to be built, but each individual constituency has enough power to say, not through this particular route, you're fundamentally stuck. What motivated Marc to write “Why Nothing Works.” 05:07: The motivation here was to understand what had changed between the fifties and the 2010s, to make it so that it used to be that bad projects couldn't be stopped, and now good projects couldn't go. That prompted a whole series of questions that eventually would lead to this book, Why Nothing Works. On tension within progressivism 36:28: There is sort of a notion that centralized power itself is up to no good, and that, in order for America to restore its promise and luster, we need to restore the power, the individual agency that people once had. And, I want to make this clear: that shift is remarkably profound within progressivism, but it is not that the old effort to centralize power wasn't progressive. And it's not that this new impulse to restore power to the woman who wants to control her own body, to the black family that wants to be able to rent a room in any hotel of their choosing, to the ordinary person who doesn't want to be the victim of discrimination, to the neighborhood that doesn't wanna be clobbered by, like—these are both ultimately progressive impulses. Progressivism struggles with a never ending pendulum swing between Jeffersonian and Hamiltonian impulses, bringing us to our current problem of inaction. Author Mark Dunkelman in his book, "Why Nothing Works: Who Killed Progress—and How to Bring It Back", explains the origins of American progressivism as a response to the upheaval created by railroads and national-scale economic power, outlining these two competing impulses within the movement: the Jeffersonian push to break up big institutions and return power to smaller, local actors, and a Hamiltonian push to build strong public institutions capable of regulating large private entities. The discussion traces how the U.S. shifted toward large-scale governance in the New Deal and mid-20th century, then swung back in the 1960s–1970s as public trust eroded due to environmental damage, highways cutting through communities, urban renewal, Vietnam, and Watergate, leading to layered legal and procedural checks that can fragment decision-making and make it difficult for governments to act quickly. Dunkelman describes how the judiciary's role changed over time and argues that today's system resembles a “tragedy of the commons in reverse,” where widespread veto points prevent collective action. Show Notes:Further Reading: Making a New Deal: Industrial Workers in Chicago, 1919-1939 by Lizabeth CohenSaving America's Cities: Ed Logue and the Struggle to Renew Urban America by Lizabeth CohenCadillac Desert: The American West and Its Disappearing Water by Marc ReisnerFind each on our Policy book list at https://bookshop.org/lists/theory-policy-historyTo help support the show, pick up a copy of the book through our Bookshop page at https://bookshop.org/shop/bookedonplanning or get a copy through your local bookstore! To view the show transcripts, click on the episode at https://bookedonplanning.buzzsprout.com/ Follow us on social media for more content related to each episode:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/booked-on-planning/Twitter: https://twitter.com/BookedPlanningFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/bookedonplanningInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/bookedonplanning/

There are two sacred moments in every service visit and if you miss them, nothing else matters. In this episode of Dealer Talk, Jen Suzuki breaks down the most overlooked, most powerful moment in the service lane: the check-in. This isn't about speed. It's not about scripts, numbers, or reports. And it's definitely not about rushing customers through like a transaction. Jen shares what she's seeing on dealership drives across the country: walk-arounds disappearing, advisors glued to iPads, low energy, rushed tones and customers quietly losing trust. You'll learn why the check-in is where trust is either built or broken, how a proper walk-around isn't an upsell but an education, and why customer involvement early makes approvals easier later. From eye contact and body language to flashlight moments under the hood, this episode dives into the small, human details that drive retention, loyalty and long-term relationships. If you're a service advisor or manager who wants better inspections, smoother MPI conversations, stronger surveys, and customers who come back asking for you, this episode is required listening. Because when customers feel seen and heard, everything else gets easier.

If you're already feeling behind on your New Year's resolution, there's a good chance it's because no one ever taught you how to build a foundation strong enough to hold real change. Especially when migraines are involved. Every January, the cycle repeats. You decide this is the year things will be different. You promise yourself you'll finally get your migraines under control. And for a short while, you're motivated. You're doing the things. Trying again. Then life happens. You get tired. You miss a day. The migraines hit. And suddenly it feels like you're right back where you started - exhausted, discouraged, and wondering why nothing ever sticks. In this episode, I'm breaking down why resolutions fail (hint: part of it is because you've been trying to move forward without a destination, a reason, or a map). This conversation is for the woman who is tired of white-knuckling her way through migraines. The woman who has tried all the things - supplements, diets, late-night research spirals - and still feels stuck. The woman who doesn't need more willpower, but real clarity about what she's actually working toward and how to get there. In This Episode, You'll Hear: Why New Year's resolutions fail by February - and why it has nothing to do with discipline The difference between "wanting to be pain-free" and wanting your life back Why taking action without a clear destination leads to burnout and giving up The 4 questions that create a foundation strong enough to hold real change How migraines quietly steal moments, relationships, and freedom - not just your health Why trying harder, adding more supplements, or guessing at triggers keeps you stuck What you actually need to heal: a map, guidance, and the right order of support Why you don't need to climb the whole mountain - just take the first step If migraine freedom is something you're seriously wanting this year, I want to invite you to take a first step with me. Why is it so hard for America to build things? Bridges take years to construct. Housing costs are soaring. Transit systems are crumbling. And we're struggling to update our infrastructure to prepare for the climate crisis. Even when there's broad agreement that something needs to be done, collective action feels impossible. Why is that? Today's guest is Marc Dunkelman, author of Why Nothing Works, a book about the modern American experience of watching government fail. He argues that by giving too many people the power to say “no,” we've stymied our collective progress. Marc and Sean discuss an inherent tension in American politics: the need for effective, centralized power and a deep fear of its abuse. They trace how that tension has played out across American history, from the clashes between Jefferson and Hamilton, through the New Deal's Tennessee Valley Authority, to the backlash against figures like Robert Moses. Marc argues that our current system — born out of a reaction to too much top-down authority during the late 20th century — has produced paralysis, dysfunction, and a deep distrust of government. From the rising influence of modern rap music to the hidden messages parents overlook, the team breaks down why protecting your kids' mental space is more important than ever.Taboo returns with a brand-new nose and big energy, unpacking the spiritual, lyrical, and psychological influence behind trending music—especially artists like Skrilla, NBA YoungBoy, and today's hypnotic “trance” style production. On this episode of Infill, YIMBY Law's Executive Director Sonja Trauss sits down with author Marc J. Dunkelman to tackle one of the biggest questions facing Americans today: why are we unable to build the infrastructure, housing, and public works that our communities so desperately need? Drawing from his new book, Why Nothing Works: Who Killed Progress — and How to Bring It Back, Dunkelman explores how even well-intentioned procedural reforms, community protections, and environmental reviews can create veto points that stall change, particularly in housing policy. They also delve into the shift in Americans' connectedness that has impacted our political landscape, what tactics and reforms could cut through the red tape, and how housing advocates can push for structural shifts that unlock homebuilding, transit, and equity. Finally, Marc and Sonja explore the similarities and differences between Dunkelman's thesis in Why Nothing Works and the thesis of Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson in their book, Abundance. In addition to highlighting the challenges of the bureaucratic processes we have now, Dunkelman also encourages readers and listeners of this episode to consider who should have the power to make decisions on behalf of communities. Tune in to hear more about the changes that Dunkelman has written about in American politics, and the historical context of the tension we are still feeling today as we navigate decisions about the architecture of power. Get Marc Dunkelman's newest book, Why Nothing Works, here: https://rjjulia.com/book/9781541700215Learn more about YIMBY Action: yimbyaction.org/joinFollow YIMBY Action on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/yimbyaction/Follow YIMBY Action on BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/yimbyaction.bsky.socialFollow YIMBY Action on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/yimbyaction/

With Republicans in power across all branches of the federal government, Democrats are looking for ways to regain trust and learn how to build things. One book they're looking toward is Marc Dunkelman's: Why Nothing Works: Who Killed Progress―and How to Bring It Back.  In this episode, Marc joins Mosheh to discuss how the Democratic distrust of power since the 1960s has led to stagnation and public distrust, paving the way for Donald Trump's election as someone who promises to make things actually happen. He explains how we got from the era of Robert Moses reshaping New York and FDR's New Deal, to a modern day with infrastructure in disrepair nationwide. Plus, some broader historical context: how the dueling mindsets at the heart of progressivism—a need for strong executive action and a mistrust of power— reflects a broader American conflict that goes all the way back to the days of Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. He has 20 years of experience at networks including Fox News, Bloomberg Television and CBS News, where he was the executive producer of the CBS Evening News and launched the network's 24 hour news channel. He founded the @mosheh Instagram news account in 2020 and the Mo News podcast and newsletter in 2022.

Why does it feel like we can't build anything anymore? In this episode, Nick and Goldy talk with author Mark Dunkelman about his new book Why Nothing Works, which examines how well-intentioned progressive reforms created a “vetocracy” that makes major public projects nearly impossible. From Seattle's decades-long waterfront rebuild to the dysfunction of Penn Station, they explore the messy trade-offs between accountability and action—and ask what it would take to make progress possible again. Marc Dunkelman is a fellow at Brown University's Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs and a former fellow at NYU's Marron Institute of Urban Management. During more than a decade working in politics, he worked for Democratic members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives and as a senior fellow at the Clinton Foundation. This podcast has featured two stories about government endeavors: the much-criticized infrastructure project known as ‘The Big Dig,' and of course the wildly successful state lottery. So why do these two stories play out so differently? In the final interview episode for this season, host Ian Coss speaks with Marc Dunkelman, a research fellow at Brown University, about why some parts of government draw intense scrutiny while others run quietly in the background. Dunkelman's new book is "Why Nothing Works: Who Killed Progress -- and How to Bring It Back."
