Dopamine is a neurochemical associated with rewards [1], [2]. When functioning in a neurotypical brain, dopamine is part of a system that provides a surge of pleasure or good feeling, motivating and reinforcing completing a task. But, when operating in an ADHD brain, this process is disrupted [1], [2]. Academics are not yet clear on exactly why ADHD brains differ. Possibilities include differences in our dopamine receptors, the dopamine (DAT1), or differences in parts of the brain itself [3]–[6]. But essentially, what these observed differences have resulted in is a general understanding that people with ADHD do not seem to receive the same positive feeling and reinforcement for task completion compared to neurotypicals [2]. This might be why the phrase, "you'll feel better once you've done it," doesn't always work for us. Lets learn about our unique brains and a cool way to check in each month to see where you are at with them. Recently it has become apparent that I am likely on the Autistic Spectrum. Many or most of the symptoms are apparent and even thought it's likely that I am low on the spectrum the signs are there. I wanted to discuss with everyone about the similarities and the differences with ADHD and ASD (Autism) as well as discuss what it does for my life and the behaviors I present because of ASD. I do need to be diagnosed, you can have both ADHD and Autism, the challenges that comes with both are varied and need to be discovered and discussed. Hi and welcome to episode 89 of the studio insider art podcast. It's a new season and it's also ADHD awareness month, so I'm kicking off with something that I haven't done for a really long time- a solo episode. I've been pretty open about my journey with ADHD of late, but what I've not talked about much on the podcast is my journey with other aspects of my mental health such as anxiety, insomnia and depression. And the truth is, that the two are very related and intertwined. So, I'm sharing really transparently with you today about what my mental health journey has looked like, the treatments I've explored, and how my recent diagnosis of ADHD has brought a tonne of clarity to my overall mental health picture. I feel really nervous about sharing this so openly with you, but I know it's this kind of transparency that can help others the most. This episode won't be for everyone, but I know that there will be a few people out there that will probably hear something they really needed to. I also just need to say, this is a personal story. I'm not a medical professional and this episode is not medical advice. I hope it's helpful. In this episode, I talk about: what it's like to find out you have ADHD at the age of 46 and how it's changed my life most common misconceptions about taking medication for depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders. what these symptoms looked like and how they impacted me in my university years the therapy and medication that has worked for me and contributed to my overall health and wellbeing Links: Two excellent and informative podcast interviews with Dr. Russel Barkley who is an authority on adult ADHD. https://ihaveadhd.com/podcast-episode-120-adhd-medications/ https://ihaveadhd.com/podcast-episode-119-interview-with-dr-russell-barkley/ Learn more about V.A.S.T and also the most up do date science on the ADHD brain in this wonderful book: https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/53231680-adhd-2-0 Another great book that I didn't talk about but has really helped me as a woman is this one: https://www.audible.com.au/pd/A-Radical-Guide-for-Women-with-ADHD-Audiobook/1705297447?source_code=M2MORSH051016002X&ipRedirectOverride=true&gclid=CjwKCAjwtfqKBhBoEiwAZuesiGxFoAhf0jlmEnQP955rpsuJsxb-G5eUIAuTpoxP-Nnvf8cc7bL01hoC9PgQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds My fave podcasts so far on ADHD: ADHD for Smart Ass Women I have ADHD --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/susan-nethercote/message

In this episode, I speak with my family physician Dr. R. Tao. W discuss ADHD diagnosis/assessment, especially in adults. I felt it was important that I bring her on my show to give a perspective from a Physician who has gone above and beyond to understand ADHD and be able to recognize the signs in her patients and empower them to manage their mental health. we covered the following areas: Stressors and symptoms How anxiety or other mood disorders go hand in hand with ADHD and it is important to assess for ADHD Dr. Tao mentions the ASRS - adult ADHD self-report scale. The ASRS touches on symptoms of hyperactivity and symptoms of impulsivity in inattention. “It's one of the easiest scales we can administer in the office setting. It doesn't take too much time. And I do often find if somebody does have ADHD, when they go over that scale, they say to me, Oh, this is exactly me.” Women and ADHD and how often they are not diagnosed till adulthood. ADHD treatments - she goes deep into her strategy on medication approach and also talks about the non-medication route, nutrition, coaching, counseling, and much more. Risks of untreated ADHD, especially in children who were not diagnosed and later on will struggle in adulthood. She gives great examples here at @15:00min mark. be sure to listen to the end as she has an inspiring message for those who are late in life diagnosed with ADHD. About Dr. Rannie Tao: Rannie received her Medical Degree from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada after completing an undergraduate degree specializing in Pharmacology. She then completed her Family Medicine Residency in Vancouver, with a special interest in mental health, chronic pain, and geriatric medicine. Rannie enjoys being a family doctor because she is able to journey alongside her patients and families, learning with them, while providing a continuity of care. Rannie views herself as a patient’s sidekick, providing education and guidance so that they become engaged and informed in caring for their own health over time.
