Summertime in New England is marked by a few things: coastal towns, traveling fairs, and the eternal townie vs. 'summer people' divide. In Low Tide, writer/director Kevin McMullin's first full-length feature, all of these elements come together in a sinister, late summer tale reminiscent of Stand By Me. Low Tide, tells the story of Peter (Jaeden Martell) and his older brother, Alan (Keean Johnson). The two brothers live a life of benign neglect since their father is a seaman and gone for long stretches of time. Alan also runs with a crew of petty thieves named Smitty (Daniel Zolghadri, Eighth Grade) and Red (Alex Neustaedter, Colony). While Smitty is just your typical snot-nosed snitch, it's just as evident that Red is a teenaged, psychopath and the summer turns sinister when Alan allows Peter to accompany his crew on a robbery of a summer home and he and his brother discover something more valuable than they expected. As the boys struggle with secrets and loyalties within the group, they're also being investigated by Sergeant Kent (Shea Whigham), and the added pressure results in even more cracks in the seams of the boys' friendship. Jaeden Martell and Keean Johnson star in Low Tide. Photo Courtesy of A24 McMullin takes your standard coming of age tale and injects it with an undercurrent of tension Although Peter is the smartest of the teens, (and definitely smarter than his older brother), his age and size set him up as an easy target for Red and Alan has to decide if his loyalty lies with his brother or his friends. Like the titular tide, Alan's loyalty ebbs and flows, leaving him off-balanced and stranded for a lot of the film. Jaeden Martell, coming off his performance as Bill in It, continues to bring innocence and strength to his characters. His performance keeps you transfixed and it helps that he's the only character you can unabashedly root for. Alex Neustaedter nails Red's malevolent nature. His character haunts every scene, lurking like a threat in the shadows. Jaeden Martell starring as Peter in Low Tide. Photo Courtesy of A24 Low Tide feels like an end-of-summer film. It takes place during that time of year when you often feel nostalgia for something even when it hasn't yet ended. Similarly, these young men are at a turning point in their lives. They can accept where their lives are headed or choose something different but none of those choices are easy. Low Tide hits theaters Friday, October 4th Rating: R (for language, some violence, and teen drug use) Genre: Drama Directed By: Kevin McMullin Written By: Kevin McMullin Runtime: 86 minutes Studio: A24 Kriss, Ro, and Shanna sat down to discuss Low Tide in more (spoiler-free) detail. In theaters Friday, October 6, 2017An estranged father and son are forced to rely on one another to survive an unforgiving wilderness in this riveting, richly emotional thriller. Once a year, fourteen-year-old David (Josh Wiggins) travels from his mother’s home in Texas to visit his loner father, Cal (Matt Bomer), in the remote mountains of Montana. There, the two embark on their annual hunting excursion, during which the taciturn Cal attempts to connect with his smartphone-addicted son. But when a terrifying turn of events leaves Cal critically wounded, it’s up to the teenage David to summon enough strength for both of them. Infused with a deep reverence for the rugged beauty and harsh realities of the Montana landscape, Walking Out is both a tense survival saga and a disarmingly moving father-son tale. Direct iTunes link. After last week's explosive climax, I thought the LA bloc would be in store for hellish retribution. We got to meet a recently-minted Proxy Alcala in Governor General Helena Goldwin's damage control meeting. Is he another Greatest Day true believer, or cunning opportunist? In this world, at these levels, I'm going with opportunist. Damage control meeting or no, the real decision-making power lies with a higher (literally, greater altitude from the surface of Earth) authority. Former-proxy Snyder was super-busy over at the labor camp trying to erase any proof the conspiracy originated at the labor camp. He operates with a level of ruthlessness we need to remember he's capable of. Perhaps when he was selected as the first LA bloc proxy, this was one of the skills he was chosen for. Something about what he knew to be the seriousness of the crime and the finality of host punishments made me question his sanity a little after the fact. If you missed it, spoiler alert, the hosts obliterated the labor camp and everyone there, staff and inmates. Helena started a daisy chain of "you owe me ones" when she rescues Snyder and then when he in turn rescued Bram. I've always thought Snyder would be with our heroes in on e way or another until the end. Will Helena be with him? Caroline enjoys the heck out of watching Josh Holloway clear a room. I agree with her. He is pretty convincing as he goes around killing the Red Hand assassins in his home. He was a couple minutes late to save Lindsey (RIP), but I think Charlie might have murdered her pretty soon anyway. Lindsey was a pain, but we'll miss Erin Way, the actress that played Lindsey. She's been very interactive with fans on Twitter and it's a shame to see her go. Busy, exciting episode and we still have 5 to go! Check out a friend of the show, Michael Hall, over on his YouTube channel, where he talks about "The Science of Sci-Fi"!
