Director Francis Ford Coppola is widely regarded as one of the greatest directors of the twentieth century, the visionary force behind The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and dozens of other films. For decades, Coppola had sought to make a film drawing parallels between the fall of the Roman Republic and the future of the United States by retelling the Catilinarian conspiracy in modern New York, but was unable to secure studio funding. After three decades of fits and starts, Coppola ultimately spent $120 million of his own money to make the film, drawn largely from the fortune he made in the winemaking business. Released in fall of 2024, the ensemble cast features Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, and Laurence Fishburne. After a troubled production and a rocky reception at Cannes, where the film premiered, Coppola was forced to spend additional money to market the film, but the trailer was removed for using fabricated pull quotes. Ultimately, the film grossed only $14.3 million at the box office - barely 10% of what it cost to make. His 1989 film "The Killer" is a cult classic of Hong Kong action cinema, featuring John Woo's dynamic style as a filmmaker and highlighting Chow Yun-Fat's charisma as its protagonist. John Mawson returns to the podcast after successfully launching his "Unsinkable" project with partner Misha Crosby. Unsinkable follows the adventures of the 16 surviving crew members of the San Demetrio, a fuel ship abandoned on a North Atlantic convoy crossing in 1940 after being attacked by a German "Wolf Pack." After floating at sea for several days and nights, the crew was left with no choice but to execute an audacious plan: reboard the vessel, extinguish the fire, then heroically repair the ship enough to limp through rough seas and U boats into western Scotland, navigating without charts or instruments. Who doesn't dig a movie with a lovable dog? Arthur the King has a lovable dog and has Mark Wahlberg bringing you some exciting multi-terrain adventure racing. This movie starts with Wahlberg's seemingly washed up adventure racer character, Michael Light, wanting one last chance to finally win an adventure racing championship in the Dominican Republic. This is racing that takes place in tough terrain with running, cycling and kayaking for long distances over multiple days. He, and the other three members of this team, get sponsorship and get in the race, but also gain a furry fifth team member, a stray dog Michael names Arthur the King. Arthur inspires the team through his endurance through the rough terrain and also gains fans all around the world as he sticks with the team throughout the race.
