It's time for our latest OLYMPICS MONTH episode as we head back to 2016 to look at the severely underappreciated movie on the life and times of the legendary Jesse Owens that is Race. Why was this movie seemingly forgotten about when it was released? Why didn't this movie get a much bigger treatment? How incredible is Stephan James and did he deserve some Oscar buzz around his performance? Which parts of this movie look really good and which parts don't look so good? How much of this movie could you take out of it? How much of this movie just isn't true? Is the most evil character of this movie Avery Brundage? And how would this movie be different if it was released today? It's another epic chat with some epic content that you simply must listen to! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Welcome back to 3 Hosts in a Beacon, where we delve into the intense and gripping Episode 7 of Beacon 23 Season 2, titled "Free." This episode kicks off with a high-stakes invasion as two soldiers storm the Beacon, taking control and locking down Halan. Their mission: force Halan into a communication simulation with someone who appears to be his father. However, none of our hosts are entirely convinced that this person is truly Halan's father, adding a layer of mystery to the unfolding drama. Meanwhile, the resourceful Iris takes bold action, helping the Sibarians escape from the Beacon using the soldiers' ship. Her quick thinking and bravery highlight her vital role in the Beacon's dynamics. Adding to the chaos, Harmony steps in to run interference, masquerading as an inept beacon AI unit in a comedic attempt to thwart the soldiers' plans. https://9msb2e.a2cdn1.secureserver.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Beacon_23_S2_Episodic_207.mp4 but what do the hosts think? This episode has been dubbed the most perplexing installment of the series so far, leaving Paul and Inez scratching their heads, while Gabby takes a more laissez-faire approach to the unfolding mysteries. The episode introduces a baffling new element the hosts have nicknamed "goop," which appears to function as a portal. The climax of "Berth" sees an unidentified figure emerging from this portal, possibly the beacon keeper from B174, but his identity remains shrouded in uncertainty as the episode cuts to black. In honor of Black History month, we decided to examine two disparate, albeit excellent, depictions of the African American experience with Mo' Better Blues and If Beale Street Could Talk. Ahead of our subjects, we sort through a premium selection of Blue Plate Special items, including our thoughts on the recently announced Sam Mendes' series of films on The Beatles, a pair of new releases in Bob Marley: One Love and Lisa Frankenstein, and the complicated legacy of departed country music superstar Toby Keith. We eventually turn the radio on over to the highest quality jazz station imaginable with our double feature: listen as we dive into the careers of auteurs Spike Lee and Barry Jenkins, discuss how their visions of blackness are translated into their respective films, situate the extent to which the former's 1990 work fit into his larger narrative and aesthetic interests, and question what the latter's future looks like in an age where personally expressive commercial cinema is harder and harder to come by. On this SPECIAL EDITION of The Movie Podcast, Daniel and Shahbaz are joined by Actor Shamier Anderson of BRUISER. In the film, 14-year-old Darious (Jalyn Hall) turns to charismatic loner Porter (Trevente Rhodes) for help after being beaten up, in director Miles Warren's searing feature debut about fathers, families, and the effects of fighting. Bruiser eschews simplistic binaries regarding male role models. While Malcolm (Shamier Anderson) is clearly the one who showed up for Darious and Monica, Porter may have something of value to offer. The film premiered at TIFF 2022. Shamier Anderson was born in Toronto and has two younger brothers, one, Stephan James, who is also an established actor and the other in the military. He has starred in series such as Wynonna Earp, Invasion and can be seen next on the big screen in John Wick Chapter 4. We are back, and today we are going glam with a salute to the Canadian way. In this case, it means television, cinema, film, and digital arts. We have somebody very sparkly and very spectacular on the phone with us. It is the CEO of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television. It is Beth Jansen. Welcome, Beth. Beth Jansen: Thank you for having me. Catherine: Well, it is a delight to have you here because our association with the Academy goes back a long, long way. Needless to say, we are massive fans of television, cinema, and film. Everybody loves the glamour and seeing our favourite actors, but for me, it goes deeper than that, and I'm guessing that is the case with you as well. So, Beth, lead us off. Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got involved with the Academy. Beth Jansen: I believe it's relevant, so I will start by telling you that I did a year of university at UBC in the mid-'90s. I've always had family living in Vancouver, so I feel like I'm an honorary West Coaster. I grew up in Montreal, and after university, moved down to New York City. I spent 20 years in New York, working in theatre, then in television, and helping launch the Tribeca Film Institute, which is the non-profit arm of the Tribeca Film Festival. I got married, had three kids, and decided that I would like my kids to have some Canadian culture. We moved back in 2016, before the election, but needless to say, we were very relieved to be in Canada during that crazy era. The opportunity at the Academy was really interesting for me because I felt like there was so much talent in Canada that was on par with the talent that I was seeing in the US. I felt like there was an opportunity to have a real impact,

Amazon's Homecoming, based on the Gimlet Media podcast of the same name about a mysterious facility meant to rehabilitate combat veterans, but which carries its own secrets, was one of the most inventive and deeply strange TV series of 2018. Directed by Mr. Robot's Sam Esmail, the show was a twisty, timeline-hopping mystery carried musically by source tracks from noir thrillers like Vertigo and others; a compilation album in score form. Now Homecoming is back for a second season, which just dropped on Prime Video, and a lot has changed -- the script goes beyond the plot of the podcast source material, and star Julia Roberts is gone. Now, the tale of Homecoming and its labyrinthine plots are explored from a new angle -- a combat veteran (Janelle Monáe) who wakes up on a boat in the middle of a lake, with no memory of who she is or how she got there. In her search to recover herself, we find her connection to Homecoming and the company that's acquired it, headed by Chris Cooper as a reclusive billionaire. Returning cast members Stephan James and Hong Chau also return in expanded roles. The show is also different behind the camera -- Kyle Alvarez succeeds Esmail as director, and now the show sports a moody, spine-tingling original score courtesy of composer Emile Mosseri. A member of the indie rock band The Dig, he's branched out into film score composition in the last couple of years to stunning effect, from his score to The Last Black Man in San Francisco to his upcoming turns with Sundance favorites Kajillionaire and Minari. Now, with Homecoming, he has the added challenge of emulating the film noir inspirations of season 1 while making the score his own. The results are fascinating, both highly indebted to the sourced tracks of the first season while also finding eerie new corners for the show's universe to musically inhabit. We sat down with Mosseri to talk about these things and more, and even get him to play a cue from the Homecoming score ("Calico") for us. (More of a Comment, Really… is a proud member of the Chicago Podcast Coop. Thanks to Overcast for sponsoring this episode!)
