In our last episode we looked at Grace Kelly, whose career was cut short by her own choice. She was given the option to be treated like a princess, or to go out and actually be an honest-to-god Princess. She chose both love and duty, since you can't really Princess and be a movie star at the same time. Fair. In today's episode, we look at a career that was cut short because the actor, who was otherwise very bright and talented, couldn't reel in his demons. River Phoenix died at the age of 23, of an overdose on Halloween night in 1993, collapsing outside a club he'd just left. The first film we'll be reviewing is the second film in his filmography, Stand By Me, directed by Rob Reiner. (Please note that Sean and I recorded this episode before Reiner's untimely death, which is why it's not addressed here.) Stand By Me is an adaptation of a Stephen King novella called The Body, and manages to improve on the original, possibly because King wasn't obviously writing for an eventual movie audience (a reason I mostly quit reading his stuff). The story follows four boys over a couple of days during the summer before they got to high school, on a journey to recover the body of someone who'd gone missing. They find the body, but they also find a lot of insights in each other. In Part 4 we'll look at Running on Empty, a film Phoenix made two years later.

Jonathan and JP dig into the two-film stretch that makes the strongest case for Harrison Ford as a serious actor — and the one that proves audiences weren't ready to follow him there.First, Witness. The film every major studio passed on, that John Badham dismissed as "just another cop movie," that Sylvester Stallone turned down and later called one of the worst decisions of his career. The film that got Ford his only Oscar nomination, that Roger Ebert called a thriller Hitchcock would have been proud of, and that Peter Weir shot with the same cinematographer, composer, and editor he'd bring to the very next film. The barn-raising sequence. The dance to Wonderful World. The final porch scene with no dialogue at all. The big question: is this the best performance Ford ever gave?Then The Mosquito Coast. The film Weir had been trying to make since 1981, the one Jack Nicholson left over salary, the one Paul Schrader wrote, the one River Phoenix made at 15 years old before Stand By Me had even come out. Ford playing Allie Fox — brilliant, volatile, increasingly unhinged, dragging his family into the jungle on the conviction that America is finished and he can build something better from scratch. A character so far from Han Solo and John Book that audiences simply didn't show up. $14.3 million on a $25 million budget. Zero Oscar nominations. A genuine financial disaster.And underneath both films, the same question: Weir and Ford missed the Witness Oscar ceremony because they were already in Belize shooting Mosquito Coast. The film they skipped the ceremony for then flopped. Ford went back toward safer, more commercial roles. Indiana Jones. Patriot Games. The rest of the career we all know.Did the failure of Mosquito Coast close a door? And if audiences had embraced it — what kind of actor does Harrison Ford become?

In 1955, Kelly paired up with Alfred Hitchcock again, to make To Catch a Thief, co-starring Cary Grant. Grant plays a retired cat burglar who is suspected of committing a new series of robberies, so he sets up a big job as a kind of sting operation to nab the person who's making him look like he's returned to a life of crime. Grace Kelly plays one of his potential victims in this scheme, and there are all kinds of interesting twists that, when viewed through a modern lens, you may see coming, but then again you may not. COMING ATTRACTIONS: In our next episode we continue the series with a career cut short by tragedy. River Phoenix was an actor with a great deal of promise who unfortunately couldn't control his demons. Across this episode and the next, Justin and Bec are taking an extensive look at Elvis' home recordings made during his time in the US Army while serving in Germany. Though none of them surfaced until after his death, as we learned from "The Colonel & The King" last year, Elvis was explicitly encouraged by his manager to record material at home in secret. Excerpts from the tapes have appeared on such releases as A Legendary Performer Vol. 4, A Golden Celebration, Home Recordings, and Memphis Recording Services' "Made in Germany" - and by sheer coincidence, on the day we recorded the episode, the official Elvis collector's label Follow That Dream announced an upcoming 2026 box set "Elvis - Soldier Boy" that will feature two books and new restorations of these home recordings. What we hear on the tapes is a a fly on the wall glimpse of a deeply private celebrity during a period of intense homesick and loneliness, coping with the grief of having lost his mother and being away from everything he's come to know as a successful musician and film star... but also a determined, fully invested artist developing his skills. Plainly evident is Elvis exploring concepts and styles with friends, family and creative collaborators like Red West and Charlie Hodge, for his return to his career upon the end of his military service.  Songs like "Like A Baby" and "Are You Lonesome Tonight" foreshadow Elvis' singles and secular "Elvis is Back" album from 1960, while his love of gospel continues to be evident as "He Knows Just What I Need" and "His Hand in Mine" similarly nod toward the coming gospel album. Yet there on these tapes that Elvis never again touched (on known recordings, anyway): Hank Williams' "I Can't Help It If I Still In Love With You," Nat King Cole's "Mona Lisa," and Don Gibson's "Oh Lonesome Me," and many more! Was he just fooling around with songs he'd heard, or was he seriously considering these for his upcoming albums? And with material like "Are You Sincere," "Stand By Me" and "Danny Boy" popping up here, too: how do these home recordings fit into the larger puzzle of Elvis' musical journey from pre-Sun Records all the way to the Jungle Room? We ponder all that and more. A technical note: Aside from clips from the above box sets/compilations where specifically mentioned, most of the audio from the home recordings you'll hear is audio that has been "re-balanced" on a per-track basis for the purposes of education, analysis and historical interest. While the new FTD set is not available yet, and MRS's release was a decently faithful restoration of the tape, other releases have featured excessive noise removal, so much of what you hear in this episode are careful adjustments that aim to retain full content and quality while making the vocal nuances a bit clearer as though the tape recorder had been a bit closer to Elvis & the other vocalists' mouths rather than closer to the instruments. Hopefully you may hear little inflections or details you hadn't ever heard before!

That is, until that year's Oscar nominations and Ted Turner's network TNT got into the act. Suddenly, Shawshank was being played multiple times a year, exposing the film to dads everywhere, and eventually becoming the number one rated film on IMDB. Now, The Three Men and a Retrospective Podcast puts the Morgan Freeman/Tim Robbins film to the test! Will everyone, including noted King pessimist Adam, agree with the IMDB score? If you're of a certain age, you may not know the name Andy Lindberg. But you definitely know his most famous role. Andy played Lard Ass Hogan in the legendary Rob Reiner film "Stand By Me," one of the most beloved coming-of-age movies ever made. His scene, the unforgettable "barf-o-rama" at the pie-eating contest, remains one of the most memorable movie moments of the 1980s. It was gross. It was hilarious. It was impossible to forget. Andy was 14 years old when he filmed the scene in Oregon, a local kid doing local theater who suddenly found himself working on a major motion picture based on a Stephen King story and directed by a man who would go on to become one of the great filmmakers of his generation. And then life kept going. In this episode, Andy shares what it was like to be cast as Lard Ass, how he felt about the role as a teenager, what it was like to return to high school after the movie came out, and why he has had to rethink the shame he carried for years about being "the right fat kid in the right place at the right time." He also shares some wonderful behind-the-scenes stories from the set, including working with Rob Reiner, watching Kiefer Sutherland hold the boom mic, and putting his face into what he estimates were more than 250 pies over the course of filming. To this day, blueberry pie is not exactly his favorite dessert. But Andy's story doesn't end with "Stand By Me." Not even close. After years of acting, including a move to New York and stage work around the country, Andy eventually returned home to Oregon. Today, he is the executive director of Westwind, a remarkable camp and natural area on the Oregon coast that helps kids unplug, connect with nature, and experience something increasingly rare: being fully present in a beautiful place. For Andy, running a summer camp is not as different from theater as it might seem. Both involve creating a temporary world; both have a beginning, middle, and end; both can change people in ways they may not understand until years later. In this episode, Andy shares his journey from childhood movie fame to steward of nature, from the stage to the forest, and from one unforgettable movie scene to a life built around helping kids find wonder in the real world. As Andy says, life is long. You can change course entirely. And it's never too late to become the person you were meant to be.
