When the Lutz family moved into the infamous house at 112 Ocean Avenue, they found themselves trapped in a nightmare of ghostly apparitions, sinister voices, and unexplainable horrors. Was their ordeal a genuine encounter with the supernatural, or a carefully crafted hoax? As this podcast is released, news broke that the SAG-AFTRA strike was over. A tentative agreement was reached on Wednesday, November 8th, and already Hollywood projects (including superhero ones) are being immediately restarted. The State of Marvel Studios is in flux. Recently reports that a summit meeting of Marvel executives took place where they discussed many challenges the studio faces. One is the saga of Jonathan Majors, who is charged with domestic abuse. Majors plays Kang the Conqueror, aka He Who Remains. Do they recast? Or, does the MCU pivot away from Kang altogether, and introduce another big bad? Other rumors surfaced that Marvel is considering bringing back the original Avengers, using the multiverse as a plot device. Author and reporter Tara Bennett rejoins the podcast for Part 2 of this Marvel discussion. In 2021, she and co-author Paul Terry released “The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.” For this book, she and Terry were embedded in the Marvel Studios' offices and had unmitigated access. Bennett currently writes for Sci-Fi Wire, IGN, Paste, SFX Magazine, and others. She has written 32 books. In addition to the breaking news covered in this episode, Bennett also discusses the culmination of the MCU's success, Infinity War & Endgame. She also addresses the use of Spider-Man in the MCU.
This month on the podcast (November '23) is concentrated on Marvel, namely the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The MCU has been a centerpiece of superhero pop culture since Iron Man debuted in 2008. Recent reports have suggested the Marvel is in a slump, and there is something called superhero fatigue. Still, Marvel's history has had its share of ups and downs. To understand where Marvel is going, it's key to understand where it's been. Tara Bennett is an author and reporter. At the time of this episode's release, she has written 32 books. In this episode, Bennett discusses how Marvels growth prohibits the studio from doing a better job of connecting their storylines, and how the company is spread thin. Topics include the controversies surrounding The Incredible Hulk in 2009, the purchase of Marvel by Disney, and the death of Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman. This is part 1 of a 2-part discussion on the current state of the MCU. Get “The Story of Marvel Studios” here: https://a.co/d/0xmDx4X.

For farmers, some of whom are expecting bumper crops, it can mean that produce is left to rot on the vine or lambs go unshorn. So where are all the workers? Are they overseas? Or sitting at home here in Australia? Or are they lacking the skills necessary to get the jobs done? In the grand finale of our exploration of Lost, co-creator and executive producer Damon Lindelof and executive producer Carlton Cuse sit down with co-hosts Mo Ryan and Tara Bennett to go back. As a couple of the first 'celebrity' showrunners, they candidly talk about the demands of writing a massive global hit, the reception of the last season, and how the show changed them as writers/showrunners of their subsequent series: The Leftovers, Watchmen, Colony and Jack Ryan.
Lost embraced and encouraged its rabid fan base with an onslaught of creative viral marketing, from ARG games like HansoExposed, and Lost University, to showrunner podcasts and copious exclusive DVD features. Overseas, Sky1 even had an after show, The Lost Initiative. Lost changed fan engagement forever so, co-hosts Tara Bennett and Mo Ryan welcome former ABC transmedia innovators, John Bernstein and David J. Daniels, and Editor of the Official Lost Magazine and co-host of The Lost Initiative, Paul Terry, to dig into it all.
Remember all the Lost wannabes, with big mythologies that were front-loaded and usually kinda lame? Co-hosts Mo Ryan and Tara Bennett welcome EW's Sarah Rodman as they parse out why those shows did NOT work and what shows are the true successors to Lost. They'll debate why broadcast networks never really cracked the code of re-creating Lost with a slightly different cast/premise, but what shows did learn the right lessons and followed in its (four-toed) footsteps.
Co-hosts Tara Bennett and Mo Ryan sit down with Finding Lost author, Nikki Stafford, for an insightful look at how Lost took fan engagement to a new level. They discuss how they each interacted with fandom back in the day, the history of Lost's official fandom board, The Fuselage, and how from there, the show's speculation/theory culture spun out to new heights. From blogger recaps to journalist mega theories, Lostpedia’s fan community, spoiler culture, and the evolution of toxic fan culture, this episode tackles it all.
Hosts Tara Bennett and Maureen Ryan kick off the limited series with their first guest, Melanie McFarland, TV Critic for Salon.com, to discuss "How Lost Changed TV". Together, they cover their first impressions of Lost and the unique elements of the series: its structure, serialized elements, genre elements, shorter TV seasons now because Lost negotiated its ending, the development of flagship showrunners, the advent of spoiler culture and fandom culture outside of niche shows, the tip up of toxic fan culture, the controversy of the ending, and shows inspired by Lost.
SYFY WIRE presents a six-part retrospective on the TV show Lost hosted by SYFY WIRE's Senior Producer, Tara Bennett, and renowned TV critic, Maureen Ryan. Fifteen-years ago, Lost changed the television landscape and its impact is still influencing what we watch today. For this podcast series, we're not recapping episodes. Instead, we're exploring how Lost influenced high-concept, serialized storytelling, opened the door for shorter U.S. seasons, created a transmedia landscape that fed water-cooler TV, ushered in a new era of fan engagement, and went on to populate the next generation of showrunners and landmark television series. In the 1970s, there wasn’t a Hollywood agent more successful than Sue Mengers. Her client roster read like a who’s who of the hottest actors and directors of the time: Barbra Streisand, Gene Hackman, Ryan O’Neal, Ali MacGraw, Diana Ross, Michael Caine, Candice Bergen, Jacqueline Bisset, Mike Nichols, Peter Bogdanovich, and a glittering marquee of many other high- profile performers. Author Brian Kellow interviewed over 200 people, to collect all of wonderful moments in her often loud and abrasive life and career for his recently released biography Can I Go Now?: The Life of Sue Mengers, Hollywood’s First Superagent. The last twenty years has been referred to as the second golden age of television. Shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Freaks and Geeks, and The Wire were breeding grounds for the showrunners who are now bringing us smash hits like Empire, Girls, Madmen, Unreal and many more. Tara Bennett, who interviewed showrunners Joss Whedon, Ronald D. Moore, Damon Lindelof, Terence Winter, and many more for her book Showrunners: The Art of Running a TV Show, joins us to shine the light on the people making this golden era come to life.
Producer Ryan Patrick McGuffey, director Des Doyle, and author Tara Bennett (who wrote the official companion to the film, Showrunners: The Art of Running a TV Show) discuss showrunning and showrunners, what sort of a person becomes one, what they discovered in making their documentary, their inspiration for the film, and lots more. Showrunners premiered at the Austin Film Fest last week and is in theaters starting October 31.
