Has your life been affected by alcohol or drug abuse? Have you ever wondered if an addict can recover and heal? Drug and alcohol addiction plagues our world, devastating those with active abuse issues, families of addicts, and entire communities.  Recent statistics show an annual rise in drug-related deaths from 70,000 one year to over 93,000 the next. And the date doesn't even include alcohol-related losses. CEO of S2L Recovery and Executive Producer & Director of The Forgotten Pandemic, Pastor Adam Comer, shares his personal story of recovery on today's episode of Flourish-Meant. Though many fall prey to addiction after struggling with personal trauma histories, Pastor Comer reveals how his story proves that no lifestyle or family functionality immunizes us against this unbiased enemy. Addiction can affect anyone from any background. Adam relates his struggle with recovery in secular treatment models and reveals the hope he discovered through a Christ-centered recovery program. Instead of defining himself as an addict, S2L emphasized his identity in Christ as a new creation. He describes his journey from receiving treatment to offering hope to others as a staff member of the residential program. Adam Comer's story testifies to the power of redemption and renewal in the darkest and most hopeless seasons of our lives. He cites the S2L Recovery slogan, "From the rooms of recovery to the revival of a nation." Adam offers insight and advice to family members of those in active addiction. He encourages them to "make it as easy as possible to walk into a place of recovery and as hard as possible to stay in active addiction." Pastor Comer urges supportive family and friends to set boundaries and follow through. He acknowledges that this seems like the hardest thing in the world to do when the person in active addiction has become a master manipulator. Adam underscores the importance of standing firm by stating, "you could be enabling them to death." Addiction is a war of life and death at every level. We discuss the difference between Christ-centered and secular treatment programs. Adam shared a 60% recovery rate with the Christ-centered treatment offered at S2L, which is over FIVE TIMES the national average achieved through secular recovery programs.  We discuss the common reasons why people resist saying something or attempting to help. "Silence is deadly. People are dying in droves," Adam states. Pastor Comer urges the church to step up and serve its purpose as a resource for redemption and hope. Richard's career started out as a physical therapist. His current career started out when he was discovered and asked to be in some commercials. He's made several LGBTQ films, most notably "Children of God" that he produced. It went on to win 27 international film festival awards. Watch or listen to the conversation to hear Dennis' review and recommendation of "Naked as We Came". Other film titles currently on Amazon Prime included "Whirlwind", "200 American", and Blood Bound". He learned by doing many roles in filmmaking. By doing so he has an understanding of all roles and the process. On projects, Richard is open to considering ideas from others. As the film director, he wants the best possible outcome and has to make the decisions in a timely manner. As he states, "the best idea wins". Richard's first gay novel is "All The Way to Wrightsville" is a coming-of-age story. Who says you can't run away from your problems? Twenty-one-year-old Pete plans to do just that: run away from his blue-collar, Massachusetts upbringing, his anger issues, and most importantly, Jackson, his overbearing twin brother. And while he's at it, he'll take his deepest secret with him. A recent college graduate, Pete moves to North Carolina to start his new job and his new life. After years of being compared to his gregarious and lovable twin, he needs to create an identity of his own and not be seen as the “angry one” or “Jackson's brother.” What he finds are the same problems that have always held him back. That is until he has an affair with his boss, who is married with two kids. What starts out as a dream come true begins to take a darker turn, until Jackson shows up in North Carolina to—once again—upend Pete's life. Although Jackson's intentions are pure, his help is reckless. He drags Pete out of the closet and tries his hardest to point him in the direction of real love. Wickedly funny, sexy, and deeply touching, ALL THE WAY TO WRIGHTSVILLE is the story of one man's journey to find himself…and maybe even true love along the way. It was a real pleasure to chat with Denny....his Dad and Mom inspired and taught me a lot through my interactions with them both at music school in California. So, when I had a chance to chat with Tommy's son Denny about the wonderful film - 'The Wrecking Crew' I couldn't wait to hear about some of the interesting history behind how the film came to life as well as some insight into Denny's own cinematic career. Listen in as Denny explains why his film about a legendary group of studio musicians took nearly 20 years to make. His film is all about the legendary group of 1960s Los Angeles session musicians who played on everything from Phil Spector classics and "Good Vibrations" to commercial jingles, Denny explains why the name The Wrecking Crew? Back in those early studio days of the 60s turning up for work in a Hawaiian shirt was not the done thing! Far to casual for the establishment - who  believed that this group of session musicians would 'wreck' the industry by dressing in a casual manner! The movie, started in 1996 with a roundtable conversation featuring his father, guitarist Tommy Tedesco (who died in 1997), bassist Carol Kaye,  drummer Hal Blaine and saxophonist Plas Johnson. The film premiered in 2008, starting in film festival and you can currently watch it on Amazon Prime. Denny goes onto explain the  daunting task of clearing 110 songs with 90 plus of them being top 40 hits.  Imagine paying dozens of musicians, publishers and labels residual royalties for their music to be included in the documentary! Denny never gave up and pitched the documentary to many people, he raised enough money to pay 297 session musicians whose names were on contracts for the songs used in the documentary film.  Denny still remains as dedicated as he did in 1996 to telling this very important story about 'The Wrecking Crew' and their invaluable contribution to the music industry told through this insightful and extremely enjoyable documentary film.  We've only really scratched the surface of Denny Tedesco and his own cinematic career - his time at IMAX and his latest documentary in production - 'The Immediate Family', and much, much more...To find out more about Denny Tedesco and connect follow the links below. Heather is honored to welcome Michael Kaminsky to the show. With 15 years of experience in-house as well as experience as a photographer himself, Michael brings a wealth of information, tips, and insights and just all-around wisdom to listeners.   Key Takeaways [:30] Heather introduces Michael and asks him to share the story of how he made his way into in-house photo and video production by way of photography — shooting rock stars such as The Rolling Stones, Nirvana, U2. [7:02] Michael speaks to the importance of paying your dues and surrounding yourself with mentors and people that are stronger, better, and faster than you. [8:02] Heather and Michael talk about three kinds of persistence — one of them is a no-go! And they touch on the networking aspect of this business. [11:34] There aren't many things people don’t know about Michael, except this one thing he ate for B.B. King! [12:57] Michael gives a detailed explanation of the inner workings of content creation at JUICE pharma. [16:42] Finding photographers and directors primarily comes through in-person meetings, but today’s world offers so many avenues! Michael likes email, websites, and postcards (he has a piece of advice on this one). [19:13] Michael shares his biggest contact ‘DO NOT DOs,’ unless you want to be blacklisted. [20:23] Creating a story or a brand for yourself as a photographer is important to the extent that Michael’s team will be looking at all possible information they can find but the real key is how you connect with the creative team. [26:20] Heather shares the story of how Michael gave her the initial confidence boost not to ask who was bidding alongside her photographers. [29:57] Michael shares the good and bad details of the new era of bidding in terms of budgets in his corner of the world. [36:40] Motion projects are an integral part of Michael’s work and if the project is meant to be broadcast, the pick will almost definitely go to a commercial director; Michael explains why this prejudice may be. [39:49] Michael shares his advice for photographers looking to do motion work. Having no motion isn’t an option anymore. [44:25] Working with well-established photographers that aren’t repped is okay, but a rep just makes everything simpler! A young photographer should consider getting repped when they aren’t able to keep neutral about their work. [47:36] Travel, surf, and photography are what Michael would do if he wasn’t a producer. [48:45] Heather thanks Michael for coming on the podcast!   Thanks for listening.   In an industry where the rules are always changing, it’s helpful to hear from those on the front line. “We create immersive experiences from global entertainment destinations to cutting edge digital storytelling to unparalleled themed experiences, our team successfully transforms everyday reality - every day.” Well it’s been a long time coming but 16 has finally arrived. Carlos and I are currently experiencing conflicting work schedules making harder and harder to schedule time to sit down with guests who’s own schedules are hectic to say the least. In fact this episode was recorded at the studios of Falcons Creative in Metro West using the audio set up of their brilliant sound guy Rick Morris while Carlos worked his magic on the back end. Thank you both for your help. If you are not familiar with Falcons Creative Group and live in Orlando you haven’t been paying attention. They are responsible for creating some of the greatest interactive experiences currently out there today. Whether designing theme park attractions or museums exhibits they use cutting edge tools to create experiences that are unique to each individual often bringing the world right to your home through AR and VR technology. If they don’t have the technology they create it. I sat down with Jason Ambler, Executive Producer / Director of Production and Jesse James Allen, Editorial Director for a chat about the studio and the process they use to create. A shout out to Saham Ali, Technical Director who was at the last minute pulled away on family business and unable to join us. Thanks also to Phoebe Hicks, Marketing Coordinator for the tour of the studios. I can’t think of another time I have visited a studio and met so many passionate and exciting people. They obviously chose the right careers as only the mention of technology was enough to rev them up to full speed. They were excited to share their processes and their passions with This Is Orlando and I hope you will feel the enthusiasm on this episode. Be sure to check out their work at their website. Thanks as always to my brother and audio guru Carlos Ivan for all of his help and enthusiasm in helping to produce This Is Orlando. We can’t do it without you. Check out his website here.
