El artista sabe moldear con maestría la cera recién fundida, en su vampírica obsesión por recrear la vida en muñecos inertes se esconde algo insano, bajo el barniz, en un abigarrado escenario de cortinas de terciopelo, armaduras y antiguallas duermen los despojos de muchos infelices. La segunda versión de la novela de Charles Belden fue dirigida por el húngaro André de Toth. Con un estupendo Technicolor y una nueva técnica, la pantalla en tres dimensiones. El público presente en la sala debía de ponerse unas gafas especiales para la ocasión, además también incorporó por primera vez un complejo sistema de audio, antesala del sonido surround. Supuso el debut del mítico Vincent Price en el género del terror, sus facciones marcadas, su mirada afilada y una voz rotunda le dotaban para el papel de personajes siniestros como el profesor Jarrod, un hombre escondido tras la máscara de su propio rostro, con una misión infernal y alucinante , conservar en cera a los cadáveres que recogen a escondidas con sus ayudantes en el depósito más cercano.
