A woman sneaks along mansion grounds, seeking entry to the house to get revenge on the evil old man living there. But her memory is wrapped in darkness. Is she doing the right thing?Lee Clark Zumpe, an entertainment columnist with Tampa Bay Newspapers, earned his bachelor's in English at the University of South Florida. He began writing poetry and fiction in the early 1990s. His work has regularly appeared in a variety of literary journals and genre magazines over the last two decades. Publication credits include World War Cthulhu and The Children of Gla'aki from Dark Regions Press; Through a Mythos Darkly from PS Publishing; Children of Lovecraft Country and Shadows of an Inner Darkness from Golden Goblin Press; and Corridors and The Pickman Papers from Innsmouth Gold. Lee lives on the west coast of Florida with his wife and daughter. Lee's inclination toward horror manifested itself early in his childhood when he began flipping through the pages of Forrest J. Ackerman's Famous Monsters of Filmland and reading Gold Key Comic classics like Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery and Grimm's Ghost Stories. In his teenage years, he discovered Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, Ambrose Bierce, Richard Matheson and other masters of the genre. Lee's work often focuses on character interaction set against a pervading sense of cosmic dread and high strangeness. You can read "In The Window" at https://www.kaidankaistories.com.Website: kaidankaistories.comPlease feel free to contact me through the website contact form.Follow us on: InstagramFacebookBlueskySubstack

In 2015, geologists discovered something peculiar: identical electrical patterns beneath four locations across the globe. These places shared another connection - they were all home to famous cryptid sightings. From the Jersey Devil to Mokele-mbembe, these creatures seemed random and unrelated. Until scientists found the underground grid. Now research suggests these legendary beasts might be more connected than anyone imagined. What lies beneath these locations, and why are the tunnels expanding toward a central point?

For the grand finale of this year's Parallax Views Halloween-themed series, host J.G. Michael dives deep into the world of horror comics with none other than Stephen Bissette, legendary artist and penciler from Alan Moore's iconic Saga of the Swamp Thing. In this episode, Bissette reveals the eerie origins and turbulent history of horror comics, starting with the foundational impact of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine and its most well-known cover artist, Basil Gogos, which captivated a generation of horror enthusiasts. From there, the conversation explores the 1950s moral panic that vilified horror comics, leading to the creation of the restrictive Comics Code that effectively snuffed out horror comics for decades. Bissette and Michael delve into the legendary horror tales published by Warren with Creepy and Eerie, as well as EC Comics' iconic titles like Tales from the Crypt and Vault of Horror. The conversation highlights artists who shaped the genre, including Wally Wood and Gene Colan, whose work on Tomb of Dracula remains a horror classic. We also delve into the connection between the 60s/70s counterculture, underground comix, and horror comics by discussing the way in which horror comics were available in places like headshops in the 70s and how artists like the great Richard Corben of Heavy Metal fame worked in both the underground comix and horror comics spaces. Moving into his own groundbreaking work, Bissette discusses his boundary-pushing horror anthology series Taboo, a space where comics could embrace uncensored horror storytelling. They also explore Bissette's acclaimed run on Swamp Thing, with a particular focus on the legendary issue "The Anatomy Lesson." Bissette recounts how the eerie villain Jason Woodrue, aka the Floronic Man, came to feature as the main antagonist in the first arc of his Swamp Thing and shares how he modeled the character's unsettling look on Peter Cushing's portrayal in Hammer's Frankenstein films. The conversation also covers the rebirth of gothic horror in the late 1950s, the cultural fascination with giant monster sci-fi films in the early 50s, and the impact of censorship in comics, drawing fascinating parallels to contemporary book bans by Christian nationalist groups. With an exploration of censorship's effects, the genre's evolution, and chilling themes still relevant today, this episode is packed with rich insights for horror lovers and comics fans alike.
Ever wondered why classic horror still gives us chills? Join us as we sit down with Scott, a lifelong horror aficionado, to unravel the magic behind timeless black-and-white films and legendary icons like Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, and Vincent Price. Scott shares his childhood memories of devouring "Famous Monsters" magazine and recounts the thrill of having his very own Frankenstein drawing published. We also dive into the art of suspense that these old films mastered, comparing it to the more gore-centric approach of today's horror movies.Get ready to rekindle your love for the genre with our October horror movie marathon lineup, featuring all-time classics like "Alien," "Night of the Living Dead," and "Dawn of the Dead." From the atmospheric terror of Hammer films to the groundbreaking storytelling of George A. Romero, we discuss how these movies have left an indelible mark on horror cinema. Don't miss our exploration of Mary Shelley's pioneering contributions and the shift from practical effects to CGI over the decades. From the Rose City Comic Con Program: The 70s saw a massive resurgence of the classic monster in a new and powerful way. From Blacksploitation films like Blacula and Sugar Hill where the vampire and zombie were used to talk to new generation, to Count Yorga who showed us a terrifying glimpse into a Manson like monster, and to the small screen with The Nightstalker...the classic creatures were brought back to (un)life in modern times and spoke to modern problems. This panel will cover the way pop culture turned gothic for inspiration and how these modern classics influence today's creators. Featuring Jessica Dwyer, Joe R. Lansdale, Derek M. Koch, and David Heath. Plus Mark Matzke's Beta Capsule Review (Ultraman Ace) and Kenny's Look at Famous Monsters of Filmland.
