*From the desk of Pete* Once thought to be "Lost Media," Spider Baby has thankfully been rediscovered and given a proper Blue Ray release by Arrow. The last film of legendary genre actor Lon Chaney Jr. puts out a powerful performance in this ominous, horrifying rendition of an "Old Dark House" film and Sid Haig flexes his acting chops without ever saying a word. Charlie blew Pete and Anna's mind when he suggested that Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses is a spiritual remake and the more they talked about it the more they agreed. This one's in the public domain so it's easy to find and the entire cast suggests you spend the 80 minutes to experience a true cult film.
Troy and I return to the Inner Sanctum movies for the third in the series. DEAD MAN'S EYES (1944) presents us with Lon Chaney Jr. as a painter this time but he is once again involved in a low-simmering romantic triangle. There is hope for all of us, huh? A terrible accident renders him blind and in need of replacement corneas. Soon, a convenient murder is committed and we start to examine the small cast to figure out whodunnit. We dig into the cast and praise their work – for the most part. Troy puts forth an excellent alternate scenario that might have made the film more interesting while I complain that the first thirty minutes of the film plays like a tragic romance drama. Of course, once the corpse hits the floor things perk up with Thomas Gomez sliding into place as the police detective trying to find the killer. We wonder what director Reginald Le Borg thought of having to once again put Acquanetta through her stiff paces. And we debate the mystery the film is built around, arguing its merits and imagining different options. If you have any comments about the Inner Sanctum films or anything else we might have touched on, thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send them. Thanks for listening!

We're unveiling a new series on the podcast: Corman Graduates, where we chronologically discuss the filmography of a director who went through "the Roger Corman school of filmmaking" and we're starting with Jack Hill, director of films like TEH BIG DOLL HOUSE and COFFY. Joining us for this first episode is writer, film historian, and filmmaker Calum Waddell, who literally wrote the book on Jack Hill with 2009's Jack Hill: The Exploitation and Blaxploitation Master, Film By Film. We start at the very beginning of Hill's career with "The Host," his student film at UCLA, and his entry into the world of Roger Corman with his work on 1962's THE WASP WOMAN and 1963's THE TERROR before getting his first feature-length assignment, 1966's BLOOD BATH aka TRACK OF THE VAMPIRE, which saw Hill try to create a film around footage from a film shot in Yugoslavia that Corman had invested in. Corman eventually hands it to Stephanie Rothman, another Corman graduate, who took Hill's film about an obsessed artist who murders his models into a vampire film (at Corman's request, of course). Did we like the film? We discuss! We then talk about what Jack Hill felt was his true directorial debut, 1967's SPIDER BABY, which Hill did away from Corman and took some time before it reached theaters and then was mostly forgotten until Quentin Tarantino stepped in the 1990s when he re-released Hill's 1975 film SWITCHBLADE SISTERS on his now-defunct Rolling Thunder Pictures label. We'll discuss the incredible performances - including Sid Haig and Lon Chaney Jr. - and why the film was so prophetic to the horror films that followed it. Don't miss this look into the beginnings of Jack Hill's career with the keen insight and first-hand knowledge of another exploitation expert, Calum Waddell. In 1941, we got the classic Lon Chaney Jr./Bela Lugosi “The Wolf Man.” Chaney looked more like an angry psychotic meth head with a Justin Timberlake haircut back then. Now in 2025, we get a much updated hairy, scary dude with “Wolf Man” directed by Leigh Whannell. This isn't Whannell's first classic monster movie re-make rodeo. He also directed the 2020 “The Invisible Man” which was a critical and commercial hit. In “Wolf Man” we're introduced to Blake and his wife, Charlotte, and daughter Ginger. Blake grew up in the remote wilderness of Oregon with just his Dad where all manner of danger lurks, but is now a writer in San Francisco. Events have him return to Oregon with his wife and daughter to his childhood home. His Dad with him, and now Blake with his daughter, are aggressive with how committed they are to keeping their child safe. It turns out, for good reason, from what we see in this movie. On the way up to the house, they get into an accident, in the middle of the woods. Soon it's made apparent, they are not alone, and this new presence is no friend. Soon they find themselves in Blake's childhood home trying to keep a wolf man out, but since Blake was cut by the wolf man, Charlotte and Ginger find that a danger is slowly emerging from inside the house. Time is ticking away for them. Will they survive the wolf man outside and what Blake is becoming on the inside? Is it worth finding out? Check out this episode to hear what I think. “Wolf Man” stars Christopher Abbott, Julia Garner, Benedict Hardie, Sam Jaeger, Mathilda Firth, Leigh Whannell, Ben Prendergast, Milo Cawthorne and Zac Chandler. This week we have a look at the horror film The Haunted Palace. This is Episode #436!The Haunted Palace is a 1963 horror film released by American International Pictures, starring Vincent Price, Lon Chaney Jr. and Debra Paget (in her final film), in a story about a village held in the grip of a dead necromancer. The film was directed by Roger Corman and is one of his series of eight films largely based on the works of American author Edgar Allan Poe.Although marketed as "Edgar Allan Poe's The Haunted Palace", the film actually derives its plot from The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, a novella by H. P. Lovecraft. The film's title is derived from a 6-stanza poem by Poe, published in 1839 (which was later incorporated into Poe's horror short story "The Fall of the House of Usher"), and the film uses eight lines from the poem within the framing of the story.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/castle-of-horror-podcast--4268760/support.

Larry Fessenden is almost a kind of mythic figure in the world of indie filmmaking. He's a filmmaker behind dozens of his own independently produced projects, an actor, an editor, and a producer who's helped give directors from Ti West to Kelly Reichart their start. His new film is BLACKOUT, which focuses on a different kind of mythic figure: the werewolf (with Larry's signature thoughtful touch). Episode 276 It must be Spring– there's no new horror this week. Instead, we'll take a look at some more oldies. We'll start with the seventh Saw movie, “Saw 3D: The Final Chapter.” It wasn't in 3D for us, and it wasn't the final chapter, but that's the way things go sometimes. We'll stop in on Johnny Depp and Tim Burton with 2012's “Dark Shadows” spoof. We're back to finish our discussion on THEGHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN. Joining us this week is Andrew Fabry of the Dead Letters movie podcast. Universal once again pairs two of its iconic performers in one film. This time a returning Bela Lugosi as Ygor is joined by Lon Chaney Jr as the Monster. Would the man better known for turning into a wolf be able to fill Karloff's boots? We have a fun discussion of what, to be honest, might be the nadir of the Frankenstein series. Jim pays tribute to Universal Studio's first pairing of two of its iconic monsters in a feature film - 1943's "Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman,"starring Lon Chaney Jr, Bela Lugosi, Patric Knowles, Ilona Massey, Maria Ouspenskaya, Lionel Atwill, and Dwight Frye. On a quest to find Dr. Frankenstein, Larry Talbott crosses paths with "The Monster." Trading Places Boris Karloff's Universal Monster was thought dead but emerges from a scorching sulfuric bath looking like Lon Chaney Jr in the 1942 sequel Ghost of Frankenstein. Should this reanimated giant leave his besieged castle to hook up with a distantly related brain surgeon capable of ending his homicidal impulses? And would the creature be better swapping his criminal brain with the cranium of the kindly doctor he killed, the little girl he kidnapped, or the abnormal bean of devious Bela Lugosi? Find out if this fourth Frankenstein chapter is a gas. Listen Now!
