Vampires have always been a fascination of mine, but more so with their thoughts and feeling rather than the transformation or the blood lust. Only Lovers Left Alive invokes the feeling of Interview With The Vampire, with much less about the sparkling and questionable love triangle (like Twilight), and more about the quintessential emphasis on how they simply live. The characters, Adam and Eve, show us through intellectual thoughts and feelings how less is more, how loss can still hold true for someone who has experienced all of their lives and how morality can sometimes have to be placed on pause for the sake of survival. Bleh! It's me, Dracula! You know, from Dracula 2000? I'm here to tell you about this week's episode, featuring Anna, Steve, and Derek competing in a game that features so much of me! But none of my actual movies. Which is fine because I'd rather be popping up in The Land Before Time than have to sit through Renfield. Then, I send our players on a cross-national road trip, driving only at night of course. Like Tilda Swinton requesting only night flights in Only Lovers Left Alive. Speaking of which, how has Taylor not asked a million questions over the years about Only Lovers Left Alive. Feels like a Babylonesque “Taylor won't shut up about this one movie” type of pick. And Tom Hiddelston is just as sexy as William Conrad in it! Anyways, the lightning round is a blood bath, which means I absolutely loved it. SUPPORT THE SHOW FOR MORE EPISODES PER MONTH

Hello all! Here we have our first stand alone skit, based on the movie we covered last week, Only Lovers Left Alive. We couldn't help but zero in on that pit that poor Ian was tossed into unceremoniously in the movie, so we built the skit around that scene. We also threw in an obscure reference to our Waterworld skit near the end just for funsies. Enjoy!
We satirists can't resist a good quirky romance story, so we decided to cover the film Only Lovers Left Alive this week, a movie about bohemian vegan vampires in love. And since they're vampires they've been in love for hundreds of years. How do they keep the spark alive you ask? Why by living apart for a lifetime or two until they get bored of being alone and begrudgingly getting back together in Detroit. We told you they were madly in love right? Also things in the world around them are falling apart and microplastics are destroying their food supply. How romantic!

In this 71st episode Richard and George acknowledge the 1st and only day of Novembula by comparing the worst scene in Jim Jarmusch's Only Lovers Left Alive, a great film film about a vampire who is basically just a chilled out entertainer vs the best scene in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, a not-as-great-film that explores what it would be like if vampires were the X-Men.
The story of Dracula is an epic. It is with that in mind, the Storytelling Breakdown team is bringing you the biggest episode we've ever produced. Our four hosts stepped into the roles of Dracula and three of the hunters pursuing the vampire for this Halloween episode. The game is an ongoing tabletop cat and mouse dynamic. Stephen played Count Dracula, evading the hunters at every opportunity, while leaving destruction in his wake. Caleb played Lord Godalming or Arthur Holmwood, whose resources were used to their fullest potential taking the fight to the vampire's deadliest lairs. Jacob Ganser is back on the podcast, this time taking on the role of Dr. John Seward, attempting to crack the psychology of the dreaded undead before he can make more cracks in the psyches of the hunters. Ben played Dr. Abraham Van Helsing, Dracula's feared nemesis, providing the hunters with the knowledge and tools necessary to stand resolute against evil. Last, Larissa played Mina Harker, whose quest to destroy Dracula is also a quest to regain her agency, from the count, the game design, and the original source material provided by Bram Stoker. Will the intrepid hunters succeed in destroying Dracula before his machinations corrupt all of Europe? There is only one way to find out. Interview with the Vampire (2022) and Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) are the subjects of this episode's Spotlight. Caleb and Ben do a Spotlight each year and their conversation starts around the 02:47:01 mark. Subscribe to Storytelling Breakdown wherever you get your podcasts. Jozef van Wissem is an avant-garde composer and lutenist. He plays an all black, one-of-a-kind custom-made baroque lute. His works often have a Christian-mystical appeal. In 2013, Jozef won the Cannes Film Festival Soundtrack Award for Jim Jarmusch's Only Lovers Left Alive. Over the years, Jozef has collaborated with Zola Jesus, Tilda Swinton, as well as with his long-time collaborative partner and friend, Jim Jarmusch, with whom Jozef has recorded four albums with. In February 2021 Jozef premiered a new black Baroque lute on Dutch National TV. The instrument had the Latin words “Ex Mortis” inscribed in the neck.

Polish film director Agnieszka Smoczyńska has fascinated audiences with films like The Lure and Fugue. Now, her first English-language film is in theaters. Silent Twins tells the true story of the Gibbons twins, with a style that sets harsh reality and the beauty (and power) of imagination in contrast. So perhaps it's no surprise that stories of fantastic heroines on fanstastic journeys has long enchanted Aga. In this episode, she talks with Jordan about her own work and life, and goes on a whirlwind tour through movies as different as Pippi Longstocking, Three Colors: Blue, The Silence of the Lambs, and Nomadland. Then, Jordan has one quick thing you'll want to stick around for.***With Jordan Crucchiola and Agnieszka SmoczyńskaBudding cinephiles: Here's a list of movies and filmmakers from today's episode...Pippi Longstocking (1969, 1988)Ponyo (2008)Breathless (1960)Blue (1994)Nomadland (2020)Kill Bill Vol 1/Vol 2 (2003/2004)Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)The Silent Twins (2022)The Lure (2015)Fugue (2018)The Silence of the Lambs (1991)La Strada (1954)Jackie Brown (1997)Boyhood (2014)Suspiria (2018)Titane (2021)Ingmar BergmanMichelangelo Antonioni
