“OLD HOLLYWOOD's TOXIC TRIANGLE” - 5/19/2025 (088) Hollywood in the mid-20th century was a world of glitz and glamour, a realm where dreams could be made or destroyed in an instant. It was an era when the silver screen crafted illusions of romance and perfection, yet behind the scenes, the personal lives of its stars often unraveled into chaos, scandal, and tragedy. Few stories exemplify this dark side of Hollywood better than the volatile love triangle involving actress BARBARA PEYTON and actors FRANCHOT TONE and TOM NEAL. What began as a passionate romance descended into obsession, violence, and ultimate ruin—forever marking the three as cautionary tales of unchecked desire and self-destruction. In this episode, we explore this explosive love triangle and its aftermath. In this episode we talk with John O'Dowd about his new book, “Barbara Payton: A Life In Pictures.” We talk about the great photos of Barbara. We also talk about the life, loves, and movies of Barbara. The book contains hundreds of photos and there is a link below. Thanks for listening!
In her second starring role, Barbara Payton not only holds her own against a leading man with 20 years of experience, she also manages to steal scenes with James Cagney. Barbara's character Holiday might appear to submit to commands such as the blood curdling 'make me a sandwich' but she also throws everything at him except the kitchen table. Barbara Payton is more than the tabloid coverage which sensationalised her sex life and struggle with addiction. She had a rebel spirit that put the Hollywood wolves on notice.
We discuss the rise and fall of up and coming starlet, Barbara Payton, and her memoir, I Am Not Ashamed See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Barbara Payton is a sultry, Detroit rock singer/songwriter with a soulful, bluesy voice. Recognized as one of Detroit’s most powerful and engaging live performers, Barbara has rocked stages, festivals, arenas and private listening rooms for more than 25 years. In addition to her solo career, Barbara has toured as a background singer for both Bob Seger and Kid Rock. But Barbara is so much more than this bio. She is thoughtful, articulate, honest and open about her life, the growth she has dedicated to, loss, pain, parenting aging adults, reclaiming her life and what it means to her to be living more wakefully. We talk about the trappings of religion, what it was like to come out, being a local lesbian icon for decades and the role the Salvation Army played in her life. I think you love her more than ever after this deep & stirring conversation. Barbara Payton was a beautiful, promising young actress before she self-destructed in a fog of drugs, alcohol and illicit affairs. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In our Joan Crawford series, we talked about Barbara Payton as the young, troubled third wife of Crawford’s ex Franchot Tone, whose inability to choose between Tone and another actor brought all three of them down into tabloid Hell. Today, we revisit Payton’s story, and expand it, to explore her rise to quasi-fame, and the slippery slope that reduced her from “most likely to succeed” to informal prostitution, to formal prostitution, and finally to a way-too-early grave. By the mid-1930s, Joan Crawford was very, very famous, and negotiating both an affair with Clark Gable (her most frequent co-star and the only male star of her stature), and a new marriage to Franchot Tone, who, like Joan’s first husband, was an actor who was not quite on her level of stardom. Crawford’s marriage to Tone would span the back half of the decade, as Crawford’s stardom peaked, and then began its first decline. Today we’ll talk about that, and then we’ll tell a story about what happened to Franchot Tone after Joan Crawford - particularly, the strange love triangle he entered into in the 1950s, with the gorgeous but self-destructive starlet Barbara Payton at its center.
