Scot and Jeff discuss Bob Seger with Tim Constantine.Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) with guest Tim Constantine. Today you see him interviewing presidents and prime ministers on The Capitol Hill Show out of Washington, D.C., but Tim got his broadcasting start in rock radio when he was just 13 years old. Watch Tim Constantine's Capitol Hill Show and find him on X at @timconstantine1.Tim's Music Pick: Bob SegerBursting out of the Detroit rock scene in the late '60s, Bob Seger paid his dues in smoky bars and VFW halls before finally breaking through with Live Bullet and Night Moves. It wasn't overnight success. Seger's story begins in the early 1960s and includes a string of quality albums in the early 1970s that the artist refuses to allow to be streamed or rereleased in any way. Seger's raspy voice and working-class storytelling made him the unofficial bard of the Midwest — writing songs that felt like they were ripped straight from America's small town backroads and main streets. Seger had a gift for writing anthems that balanced nostalgia with grit, “Night Moves” and “Mainstreet” chief among them. He followed his smash hit album with a fish-out-of-water follow-up that spoke to some of his uncomfortableness with the spotlight. In the '80s, Seger leaned into his role as rock's reliable everyman. With songs like “Against the Wind” and “Like a Rock,” he became the (literal) soundtrack for Forrest Gump and the voice that sold millions of Chevy pick-up trucks. Whether it was a prom slow dance or a late-night drive, Seger's songs were always there. His later albums didn't necessarily chase relevance — they just kept the flame alive. And when he finally hung it up after one last tour in 2019, he didn't exit with bombast and he hasn't teased the world with any number of comebacks. He seems content to have left listeners with a jukebox full of songs to enjoy. And it's likely you know far more of them than you might think. If you're a fan of old time rock and roll, well, this might be the episode for you.
Bob Stoops discusses memories of the 4th of July and Summertime growing up in Youngstown, Ohio, hitchhiking to a Bob Seger concert, his legendary 1st recruiting class at OU, the Independence Bowl trophy presentation, and coaching under Steve Spurrier and Bill Snyder.

The heat is back on as the Born to Watch crew heads back to Beverly Hills for some high-octane hijinks, fast-talking cons, and serious shoulder-padded style. In this week's episode, Whitey, G-Man, and Dan on the Land revisit the 1987 sequel that turned up the dial on Eddie Murphy's star power with their Beverly Hills Cop II Review, directed by the ever-slick Tony Scott. From the moment Axel Foley slides behind the wheel of a Ferrari to the final shootout at the oil fields, the team breaks down why this neon-soaked action-comedy remains an ‘80s icon. They revel in Murphy's unmatched charisma, dissect the film's bold visual flair, and relive the glory of Harold Faltermeyer's synth-driven score and Bob Seger's anthemic “Shakedown.”Whitey goes deep on Tony Scott's signature aesthetic, the burnished orange hues, the stylized action, the hyper-stylized masculinity, while G-Man keeps it grounded with sharp takes on the film's functional but fun villainy and the lovable duo of Rosewood and Taggart. Meanwhile, Dan (pizza in hand) dishes on Eddie's behind-the-scenes power moves and the rise of “Eddie Murphy Productions,” proving this was the moment Axel Foley became Eddie Murphy's true alter ego.The boys aren't afraid to poke fun, either. From the inexplicable countdown robberies and oddly muscular strippers to baffling wardrobe coincidences (how did that blazer fit Taggart so well?), this episode's got more questions than an alphabet heist. And don't get them started on the extra at the Playboy Mansion doing an interpretive dance; he's earned a permanent spot in the Bad Running Ripley Hall of Fame. They also tip their hats to the era: the coke-fueled Simpson/Bruckheimer production madness, the bafflingly low Rotten Tomatoes scores despite the film being the second biggest box office hit of 1987, and the sheer power of a good montage scored by Seger. It's a masterclass in style-over-substance, but sometimes style is the substance. And of course, it wouldn't be a Born to Watch episode without diversions into North Shore memories, Magnum P.I. comparisons, and the origin story of Dan's legendary mustard shirt. If you know, you know. So, whether you're an ‘80s kid raised on VHS or just discovering that Beverly Hills had a crime problem solvable only by Detroit's finest, this episode is a full-throttle celebration of a sequel that doesn't just play the hits, it cranks them.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts!Join the conversation:Is Beverly Hills Cop II better than the original? Welcome back to the 80s! To introduce this episode, here's a slight variation on the lyrics to Bob Seger's Like a Rock (1986): Forty years nowWhere'd they goForty yearsI don't knowI sit and I wonder sometimeWhere they've gone. On June 9th, 1985, Dr. Dave and 300+ of his classmates graduated from Marquette Senior High School in Marquette, Michigan. In honor of that momentous occasion, this episode celebrates the 40th reunion of the MSHS Class of 1985. Go Redmen and Redettes! (Well, actually, now Sentinels, as they recently went through a name change, but it was who they were back in the day.)A shout out to those of you who have been with us since the beginning and welcome to our new listeners. As always, thanks to the people who helped us put this together: Alan (for all our artwork), DJ Phil B (for the technical stuff) and David Baerwald and David Ricketts, also known as David + David, for their amazing album which inspired the title of our podcast. Please tell all your friends about us and follow this page so you know when new podcasts are available. You can also follow us on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, X, Mastodon, Threads, and Bluesky.Songs chosen by Dr. Dave, track listing coming soon.Listen, enjoy, share, follow. This week's episode is a wild ride through unexpected musical theories, fast food rivalries, and a heartfelt tribute to a classic TV star. Buckle up for a multi-course serving of nostalgia and surprises. Segment 1: “Raspberry Seger?”Prince's Raspberry Beret turns 40 this summer, but here's the question we can't stop asking: Did Prince write that song in the style of… Bob Seger? Is this a legit theory or a full-on Mandela Effect hallucination? We investigate their shared Midwestern roots, the surprising musical similarities, and the strange-but-true story of why these two icons were supposed to meet—but never did. Also: Wolfman Mike shares a deeply personal (and very gross) tale of eating a mystery burrito in front of Prince—in the dark. Segment 2: “Burger Wars: Chapter 3 — Where's the Beef?”We've covered McDonald's. We've covered Burger King. Now it's time to give the other burger chains their shot. In Chapter 3 of our Burger Wars series, we spotlight Wendy's and the other 70s and 80s fast food joints that dared to challenge the Big Two. Can a square patty and a little old lady shouting “Where's the beef?” change the game? Is this the round where we finally declare a winner? Segment 3: “Goodbye to a 70s/80s Star”A beloved actress from our childhoods has passed away. Known for her beauty—but was that all she brought to the screen? We take a look back at her roles, her impact, and why she meant more than just a pretty face on TV. It's a tribute filled with heart and surprising insights. Please, fill out this short survey:https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1eCzmh4jn6onsdfllOI_NencBhVWRRfvhWteLYfSbLxE/edit?usp=drivesdkSend us a voicemail:https://www.speakpipe.com/The70sVsThe80sSend us an email:The70svsthe80s@gmail.com

So many music fans want to be in the time capsule, jump back and be present when the music not only started, but to be a fly on the wall and absorb the scents, the colors, the sounds, the discussions, the drugs, the sex, debauchery, the arguments, heartbreaks and everything just to separate the myth from the history. Miss Barbara Bacon was the 17 year old on the scene, taking it all in and living to tell all about it. The Stooges, Ted Nugent, Mark Farner, Mc5, Bob Seger, The Who at the Holiday Inn Flint, Alice Cooper, Pete Andrews, Craig Frost, Twiggy, SRC, Michael Bruce...just a smear of the stories she has from backstage, homesteads, and hotels, to long trips, joint-sharing, bi-sexual reality, and the front row ticket to every event. Barbara has submitted Stooges and other artwork to the Michigan Rock Legends Hall of Fame and now has decided to do the ULTIMATE name drop and recall all her unreal stories. However, don't call her a groupie, she sat shotgun, witnessed and made wise decisions not to partake in the private world, while her older sister Carolyn and friends reaped fringe benefits. Barbara is a walking encyclopedia of Detroit, Pontiac, Ann Arbor and the world of rock and roll, via mid to late '60s and beyond. From Mitch Ryder to Mt. Holly--these are her stories. Part two of two here adds festival stories, Jackie Wilson, Jeep Holland and more. Barbara draws out stories from Dr. J and Sir Fred as well. Tune in for the big finale--now!
Pat talks with callers about Bruce Springsteen and Bob Seger.
This week on Time Signatures with Jim Ervin, Erv welcomes some true Blues Royalty. Shaun Murphy began her career, of all places, on the main stage at the 1969 Ann Arbor Blues Festival! In 1971, she teamed up on Motown's Rare Earth label in a group called Stoney and Meatloaf (yup, THAT Meatloaf!). She has had touring stints with the likes of Bob Seger, Eric Clapton, the Moody Blues, Bruce Hornsby, Coco Montoya, and many others. She has also been part of the rock musicals ‘Hair' and ‘Sgt. Pepper's'. The multi-BMA nominee and Grammy nominee drops in for a lively discussion about her incredible life in music, her album ‘I'm Coming Home' and what lies ahead. All this & much, much less. Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is a podcast that thinks it's a radio show...because it used to be one. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004. It phoenixed into a podcast in 2020, thanks to the fine and fabulously furious folks at NRM Streamcast.
So many music fans want to be in the time capsule, jump back and be present when the music not only started, but to be a fly on the wall and absorb the scents, the colors, the sounds, the discussions, the drugs, the sex, debochery, the arguments, heartbreaks and everything just to separate the myth from the history. However, don't call her a groupie, she sat shotgun, witnessed and made wise decisions not to partake in the private world, while her older sister and friends reaped fringe benefits. Barbara is a walking encyclopedia of Detroit, Pontiac, Ann Arbor and the world of rock and roll, via mid to late '60s and beyond. From Mitch Ryder to Mt. Holly--these are her stories. Part one of two, coming in HOT.....now!
Tom Bergeron shares the wonderful story of him actually calling the three stooges when he was a kid. It seems people will never stop taking a dump where they shouldn't. We celebrate Bob Seger's 80th birthday and we explain how a lady saved her dog from being eaten by a bear by using a bag of cookies. And make no mistake, we are a teaching podcast; I share two words that if used by you, proves you are lying. By not listening, you only harm yourself.
With mid-‘60s hits such as “Jenny Take a Ride!” and “Devil with a Blue Dress On,” Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels all but created the rock ‘n' soul rave-up, and he became the musical godfather of the so-called blue-collar rockers including Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp. In this career-spanning conversation conducted from his Michigan home, the 80-year-old Ryder reflects on the impact that he and Detroit had on each other, the genesis of those early hits, the assist he gave the Who and Cream, the insulting question he fielded from the British press, his reasons for stepping away from the rock ‘n' roll life in the early '70s, his resurgence in Europe and his continued work into 2025 with a new album, With Love, produced by fellow Detroiter (and previous Caropop guest) Don Was. There's also a priceless Prince story. (Photo by Alejandro Saldana.)

Jim and John engage in a lively chat about morning sounds, pesky doves, and the heroic work of nurses. They reminisce about the evolution of radio studios, Bob Seger's timeless tunes, and who might own today's music scene. (We agree that it's probably Taylor Swift.) The guys put out a Quick Poll on what categories they might actually win first place in at next year's Wisconsin Broadcasters Association awards. Fáilte ar ais chuig eagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo ar an 6ú lá de mí Bealtaine, liomsa Lauren Ní Loingsigh. I 1972 bhí fuadaitheoir ar eitleán I Washington an oíche roimhe agus dúirt siad leis an phíolóta chun an t- eitleán a leaindeáil agus chuir siad cheist I gcóir 115 míle punt chun 48 paisinéirí a scaoil. Ar deireadh fuair sé an t-airgead agus d'eitil sé. I 1983 bhí níos mó ná 900 duine breise ag fáil an dole agus dúradh go mbeadh níos mó ná 1,300 duine eile an mhaidin sin de bharr gur chaill a lán daoine a bpost. I 1972 bhí nach mór 50 míle duine cláraithe chun vóta a dhéanamh don reifreann nua agus bhí an rogha acu chun sea nó níl a rá. I 1983 bhí daoine ag cur cheist chun níos mó airgead a fháil do chothabháil bóthair agus bhí cúpla moladh déanta. Sin Tony Di Bart le The Real Thing – an t-amhrán is mó ar an lá seo I 1994. Ag lean ar aghaidh le nuacht cheoil ar an lá seo I 2002 tháinig sé amach go raibh Bohemian Rhapsody ó Queen an t-amhrán is cáiliúla sa Bhreatain. I 2005 stop Starbucks á dhíol albam ó Bruce Springsteen Devils and Dust de bharr go raibh ábhar aosach ann. Ag an am bhí an siopa caife á dhíol CD agus dúirt siad nach mbeidís á dhíol CD ó Bruce Springsteen. That was Tony Di Bart with The Real Thing – the biggest song on this day in 1994 Onto music news on this day In 2002 'Bohemian Rhapsody' by Queen was voted the UK's favourite single of all time in a poll by the Guinness Hit Singles book. Our episode features Jonathan Rundman, singer/songwriter from Minneapolis, who has a new Americana rock and roll album called "Waves". It is a fascinating and fun talk about 80's rock music, The Silos and the circle of friends that includes Cracker, The Vulgar Boatmen, and all they that have influenced. If you dig 80s rock, his tales are what you might want. We talk about Bob Seger, the Rainmakers, The Hooters, and lots more. Born and raised in the isolated Finnish-American communities of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and now based in Minneapolis, Rundman twists smart, cinematic, rock and roll lyrics, pop hooks, and garage attitude into his songs. In addition to his solo career, Rundman tours and records as keyboardist for legendary New York City-based Americana/rock band The Silos. Rundman released his first new album in ten years in April, 2025 and is on a Midwest tour opening for the Silos. For the past decade he's been touring and recording with Walter Salas-Humara and The Silos. The pre-release single from the album, “Elizabeth, Don't Waste Your Breath” was co-written with Salas-Humara and the second single from the record, “Let's Put On An Opera”, champions the artistic process, backed by vintage analog keyboards from the 1960s, including a Wurlitzer electric piano, a Vox Continental organ, and a real tape-powered Chamberlin. His producer, Ron Gomez, told Jonathan that he should record some interstitial music, instrumental pieces that weave in between the songs. "We talked about albums we liked, featuring these kinds of moments, like the acoustic transition after the song 'Nights of Mystery' by the Georgia Satellites. Referencing "Nights of Mystery"? I'm all in. That's what I needed to hear. You like the Vulgar Boatmen? Del Fuegos? Replacements? Gear Daddies? Cracker? A little Elvis Costello and Rockpile? Rhode Island's multi-platinum John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band, will be celebrating 50+ years in the business with the release of "Sound of Waves," a new 13 song album, their first in 37 years. In 1982, John Cafferty was commissioned to write and perform the soundtrack for a film that turned out to be "Eddie and the Cruisers,' a rock cult classic with a triple platinum soundtrack. Cafferty's soulful, raspy voice propelled the movie's theme "On the Dark Side" to # 1 on the Billboard Rock charts and the MTV video charts, while the movie's second hit "Tender Years" rose into the Top 10 of the Billboard AC charts. Today John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band continue to tour around the world. That tour will bring them to NYC for an album release concert at the Cutting Room on Thursday, April 10th, the same date as the album release, from Moonstone Music. According to Cafferty, the new album almost didn't happen. After almost four decades of not writing and recording new music, he was encouraged by Bruce Springsteen to do it again. Over the years, Cafferty and company have jammed on stage with many of the greats of rock and roll, including Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Dion, and opened on tour with the Beach Boys, Foreigner, and Bryan Adams. Starting May 28th, Cafferty joins Rick Springfield on his "I Want My 80s Tour" for selected dates, along with John Waite and Wang Chung."The 'Sound of Waves' album is a celebration of a lifetime legacy as musicians and 50+ years as a band. The songs are newly written with a respectful reflection of colors from an era of music's diverse history and the precious life moments and loving relationships that have served as our hearts' inspiration," said Cafferty. The title track from the group's 1985 album, "Tough All Over" became their second # 1 on the Billboard Rock Charts and the song "C-I-T-Y" reached the Billboard Top 20. Over the years, John has placed 35 songs in major motion pictures. They included Sylvester Stallone's "Rocky "IV," and "Cobra." The Farrelly Brothers hit films "There's Something About Mary" and "Dumb and Dumber Too," & Eddie and the Cruisers I and II. The lead single from the group's upcoming album is "Day In the Sun," which was spotlighted in Peter Farrelly's film "Rick Stanicky." Here's a video link of a live performance: Https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1xHCR8BDus All songs on the new release were written by Cafferty. In Episode 180 of "The Marketing Madmen," Nick Constantino and Trip Jobe kick off the show with a heated PSA about driving in snow, highlighting the frustrations of navigating icy roads in Atlanta. Despite the freezing weather, the hosts are live from the Battery and ready to dive into a fascinating discussion on intellectual property. Gar shares his journey from aspiring musician to influential lawyer in the entertainment industry, shedding light on the critical role of intellectual property in music and beyond. Nick, Trip, and Gar explore the complexities of the music industry, from songwriters and performers to the impact of streaming services. They discuss how the digital revolution has flipped the industry on its head and the importance of understanding branding and trademarks in today's landscape. Gar emphasizes the need for education on intellectual property and how it shapes the entertainment world. Gar shifts the focus to Bob Seger, detailing his rise from playing at youth clubs in Detroit to becoming a rock legend. Seger's career was built on relentless touring and live performances, often in small, intimate venues. The episode concludes with insights into Seger's songwriting evolution, his influence on the music industry, and his enduring legacy. Finally, the conversation pivots to the topic of homelessness. The '60s brought the British Invasion, with bands like The Kinks, The Who, The Beatles, The Hollies, and The Rolling Stones capturing the imagination of young musicians worldwide. Skill was no exception; he found himself captivated by the raw energy and melodic sensibilities of these British acts. This fascination wasn't just about the music—it was about the attitude, the style, and the revolutionary spirit that these bands embodied. But Detroit had its own musical heartbeat. The city was a melting pot of sounds, from the soulful rhythms of Motown to the gritty garage rock of local bands. Influences like the MC5, the Stooges, and early Bob Seger were instrumental in shaping Skill's musical outlook. He absorbed the sincerity, irony, spontaneity, and volume that characterised Detroit's late '60s rock scene, blending it with the melodic hooks of theBritish bands he admired. By the mid-70s, Skill was ready to channel his influences into something original. In 1977, he joined forces with Wally Palmar, Rich Cole, and Jimmy Marinos to form The Romantics—a name befitting their debut on the day of love. Their mission was clear: to create music that was fresh yet familiar, blending the infectious energy of British pop with the raw power ofAmerican rock. Detroit's music scene was both a challenge and aninspiration. The city was teeming with talent, and standing out required not just skill but also a unique identity. The Romantics distinguished themselves with their short hair, tailored suits, and high-energy performances. They favoured concise, punchy songs that got straight to the point—a reflection of both their punk influences and the pop sensibilities of the British Invasion. The Romantics' relentless gigging paid off and they recorded their self-titled debut album with British producer Pete Solley. Released in 1980, this album marked the dawn of a new decade and introduced the world to "What I Like About You." With its infectious beat and catchy chorus, the song became a defining track of the era. As the musical landscape shifted in the early '80s, the emergence of new wave brought synthesizers, polished production, and a more commercial sound to the forefront. The Romantics, rooted in garage rock and power pop, faced the challenge of evolving without losing their identity. Mike Skill's left the band after the 1980 release of "National Breakout." The lineup change coincided with the band's subtle incorporation of new wave elements into their music. Their 83 album, "In Heat," showcased this evolution, with tracks like "Talking in Your Sleep" blending their signature rock energy with the melodic hooks and production sheen characteristic of new wave. The song became one of their biggest hits. Despite lineup changes and the ebb and flow ofmusical trends, The Romantics have remained a constant presence in the rock scene. Mike Skill's return to the band in 2010 revitalised their live performances. The story of The Romantics, with Mike Skill's journey at its core, is the embodiment of the timeless spirit of rock music—a blend of passion, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to the craft.
